I understand the desire to get rid of as much as possible or each a quota, but it’s also okay to keep stuff you like. If you regularly wear everything you own, I count that as good.
Hadar Pepperstone this is important 🙌🏻 I think people feel a-bit pressured to chuck things away and be all minimal , but if you really love, wear and have joy in everything you own- then why not keep it! Otherwise you might buy more to replace what you got rid of but you’ll never find what you already had before.. endless vicious circle of sadness and shopping. Just be mindful and everything in moderation :)
You could make the First Aid Kit shirt into art, if it doesn't fit you anymore. Like, just cut out the motive and put it in a frame. That's what I did with one of my my sentimental t-shirts, that didn't fit me anymore. Also, you could make a pillow out of it and practice your sewing a bit more 😂
I took photos of my sentimental band shirts and got rid of them. I don't miss them at all now but it makes me sad that they were probably burned and not re-used.
The idea of cutting or throwing away band shirts seems sacrilegious to me. If you are going to frame them why not fold the shirt instead? Also, i would suggest turning old band shirts into full back patches on a jacket eg. Denim jacket.
Personally, I like to do a little clearing out about once every 3 months so it doesn’t end up being a huge ordeal. I like to pick an area like my bookshelf or my closet and just pile everything on the bed and reorganize and toss as I go. It’s also a good opportunity to dust and redecorate.
I totally agree! It also really helps you work out what you actually want. I find if I do a big clear out, I actually don't get everything I should but when you go back in a month you can get rid of even more!
I do the same, but about every six months because I like to go through stuff when the seasons are changing, i.e. in the spring and in the autumn, since that's when it goes from being mostly plus degrees (Celsius) to being mostly minus degrees.
Honestly, the biggest and most helpful thing for me when I went through my clothes the last time (years ago, I need to do it again) was to *thank* the items I got rid of. It's a trick I picked up from the konmari book - it sounds absolutely mental, but I swear it works. If you're hung up on something that you've loved for a long time, but it's just not really doing it for you anymore, or you paid a lot of money for it at the start and you feel like it's a waste... Try thanking the item. "Thank you for serving me so well for so long." or "Thank you for bringing me joy when I bought you." or whatever! It honestly does work, and it cleared up so much of the guilty feelings I had about getting rid of some of the things.
Great video - I love how down to earth and real you are. I've actually been spending the day cleaning through things and I just sat down for a bit of a break because indeed - it is exhausting and sometimes overwhelming. I don't think I'm a total pack-rat but sentimentality has me holding on to far more than I should!! This just motivated me to get back to it!!
After a mega clear out due to move I have decided to take all me “memory lane” clothes and turn them into patch work quilt blanket kind of thing! Minimising space taken up with unnecessary clothes but cherishing the warm and fuzzies!
You could stretch the band tee under a frame and use it as wall art! That way you can see it more often and have it as a prized possession that doesn’t sit in your drawer unworn!
I stumbled on a newer video of yours, wound up way back here, and realized this is 5 yrs old lol but I love when the decluttering videos actually count the pieces. I think it really helps to see the progress and think about practicality.
So, you may have/ probably have already done this but I think you now need to split your clothes into summer and winter, and store the stuff you are not using in a storage container. I started doing that last year and it makes getting dressed and managing my wardrobe so much easier, for instance you can more easily see what you have for the season - you may find you have 30% summer clothes and 70% winter, and you need a few more tops or something, or you can more easily see that you are missing a piece, like you said with the black jeans.
i do this too, even with dresses that could be worn with tights in winter, or tops under jumpers, or jumpers i could use on summer evenings. sometimes the choice in the morning is overwhelming, and it also stops me going out to buy new things bc im bored when every six months or so i get new pieces ive usually forgot about back in my wardrobe
the main reason why I struggle with clearing out my wardrobe is that I either think "no, I love this piece of clothing so much and wear it all the time I can't possibly get rid of it" or "I've owned this for literally ages and only worn it a few times but I can't throw it away! I've spent so much money on it! I will definitely start wearing it soon!" D:
one of the biggest hurdles for me too is throwing out expensive stuff. See if you can give it to a friend or family member, or think of how much money a charity shop would be able to make for a cause you support from your expensive item. or, if you have space and minimalism isnt your thing, keeping it is fine. just because minimalism is on trend and worksfor others doesnt mean it works for everyone
Hey! I cleaned out my wardrobe several weeks ago and just like you, I did it before getting the chance to read The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying up. Cleaning up the closet has made me more willing to start cleaning the rest of my room too. Watching this video while doing laundry is making me feel the need to do a second round of wardrobe cleaning! 😁
I love videos like this! I usually clear out things at the beginning or end of every season (aka when I switch everything out). I evaluate based on whether I wore it or still like it. I've also heard of a strategy where in your closet, you turn all your hangars backwards and then when you wear something you turn the hangar around. At the end of the season or time you've given yourself, anything that's still backwards you know you didn't wear at all!
The advert I got was Daniel J Layton talking about consent and it was a brilliant ad! This is the sort of stuff that should be at the beginning of every video on every channel not just Hannah's! Awesome video too Hannah :)
I don't have a lot of wardrobe space so I have the current favorites in the wardrobe and the non seasonal and special things under the bed. This makes me go through everything twice a year from winter to summer and vice versa. Confronting myself that often with all of my clothes helps me get rid of stuff gradually. Sometimes it is just one item that gets sorted out, sometimes there is a lot (like when I realized that I hate Jeans and tight pants), but over time I really got together a collection of clothes that I actually want and enjoy.
Me too, like soooo much. But I have to go back to study, after this little pause of video watching. I don't want to study right now, I want to really clear out my wardrobe. I also want to buy some Hufflepuff clothes, or at least yellow clothes, because when I watched this I realized I don't have any yellow clothes, except for a light yellow dress, but that one is really light in colour, I want something in a more proper yellow.
You have inspired me! I am absolutely going to clear out my wardrobe on Friday, I have a stressful presentation at uni on Thursday so I can treat myself to a big old clear out after !!
I'm been putting off clearing my closet bc I know it's gonna be a lot to handle, but this gave me great inspiration to do it sooner than later. My plan is to devote an entire weekend to the process. I have a solid suspicion that I have more than 200 individual pieces of clothing (not including underwear/socks). So I'm definitely going to do the same thing as you with counting each item and noticing what colors/patterns I'm keeping. But even though it will be a lot of work, I'm so truly looking forward to the process and especially the result. A lot of these clothes are from high school, when I was 100 pounds lighter than I am now, or gifts I keep out of love for the person who gave them to me, or just don't fit. I am so excited to get rid of the literal baggage I've been carrying around for years and having a closet of only clothes that I love and feel confident in. I know this has been a long comment, but I am just very excited for spring cleaning and Marie Kondo-ing the crap out of my apartment.
i love clearing out my clothes so this was so therapeutic to watch! also, you could always turn that first aid kit shirt into a cushion cover or something, that's what i've done with some old logo tees/band shirts
I got rid of half my clothes in the past couple of weeks, I based it of what did I actually wear and like and will I wear it again, I feel so liberated now I have such a minimalist wardrobe! Also makes picking outfits way easier when you have less to chose from!
I loved this video and it was a great way to clear out, I thought! I have so, so many clothes, and I think if I just laid them out over break and said, I love this, it still brings me joy, and another pile of what doesn't ever, it'd be okay.
I read the life changing magic of tidying up earlier this year and I noticed right away when you were holding the items and thinking about if they brought you joy or not :) What I like to do is go through things by timeline, so if I haven't used something for 3 months and can't see myself using it in another 3 months than I donate it. I've also seen that some people put their items in a maybe pile and store it away for a month, and then once they come back to it they reflect on if they could remember each piece that was in there or wanted to pull something out during that time, using that to then indicate if it goes/stays.
This has inspired me to clear out my clothes, which I definitely need to do once I've finished uni! I keep putting it off because it feels like a big effort, but it's always so therapeutic! Loved this, Hannah! X
I actually almost never buy clothes, but like you I hoard the clothes I have. For years. I've been slowly working my way through different storage areas in my house doing a clear out. Haven't made it to the wardrobe yet but I think this just moved it up the priority list
Hannah, I'm the same about t shirts that have sentimental value! I keep them in a collection and hopefully one day I'll have enough to make a blanket out of them. Don't be afraid to keep concert or camp t shirts that have sentimental value!
Hey Hannah! A great way to organize is to make three piles instead of two: "definitely", "maybe", and "no". Do a first round and trust your instincts. It's okay if the "maybe" pile is the biggest. Once you're done with the first round, do a second one only with the "maybe" pile. And then again. And again. Until you're done! This helps me a lot since I'm a very indecisive person, and gives me more time to think about each item! Hope this helps you too! :)
Agh Hannah I’ve been meaning to do this myself for ages, the number of times I’ve tried to get ready with a bursting wardrobe and found nothing to wear 🙈 thanks for doing this, maybe this video will give me the push I need to finally do it! Although how you stayed focus for so long to finish I’d beyond me, I 100% would have got distracted many times along the way 😂
I always keep my clothes for the season it isn't currently inside my suitcases, that way I'm using up already available space and I know where everything is!
I love watching other people organize their wardrobe and it makes me feel inspired to do so as well but my wardrobe is probably the only thing in my life I currently have organisation in so I have no need to clean it out.
Oooh can we get a sorting through/ clearing out for the books and bits you mentioned? (Actually this videos are really nice and motivational to start getting rid of stuff, I just did it last week too!)
My strategy for getting rid of clothes and books has been to quickly go through them every few weeks and get rid of my least wanted items. It does mean more trips to the charity shop but it's much less intimidating than trying to get rid of everything at once.
I loooove clearing out my wardrobe and since I've been moving appartments every year for the past 4 years i've been going through all my clothes every time and getting rid of a lot
I recently just donated quite a bit of books and clothes. I think I am going to do a second run-through once I am back home after the semester is over. For cleaning out, I just look at how well it fits and how often I have worn it. There are other small things but those are the main ones.
I love clearing out my wardrobe. I tend to be super sentimental with things but clothes are usually easy for me to toss. I do however keep recent purchases and things I've had for years. I have a ton of tank tops that I never wear that I'll probably toss once I move or even before and other bits that just take up space.
I do the thing where I put clothes away after washing them in the front of my drawers and the inside-middle of my closet. That way things that I don't wear as much stay in the back/outer edges. Then every few months I can look at just the backs of drawers and the edges of my closet and decide with those things to keep or donate. Cause going through everything is definitely an undertaking.
Reading a life changing magic is really genuinely helpful because it gives you a bit of time to reflect on why you're doing it and think a bit more about the things that you keep in different ways so 100% recommend reading it (even if there's some stupid crap in it about what a woman should wear to sleep in)
my strategy: generally the same as what u did but anything I'm unsure of I put away somewhere and a month later if I haven't gone to get it or worn it then they go.
As for the strategies, I recommend going backpacking for half a year. Wearing the same 7 tops, 1 pair of jeans and 1 pair of leggings for half a year cuts all the emotional connections with your wardrobe and makes it easier to say goodbye :D (ehm went through the curating process two week ago) Also, LOVED this video. Nothing better than chucking unnecessary belongings.
I know exactly how you feel about the hospital pyjamas. I still have some that were brought purely for when I had a massive flare when I was 8( I am now 15) and I haven't worn them ever again. I am also booked in for a colonoscopy on May 22nd and am dreading it but videos like yours help me distract myself from it xx
Great timing, I've been doing my cleanouts over the last two days and now yours can inspire me to keep at it and finish the job! We did the yes, no, maybe piles today, and to be fair I still kept too much. I'm chronically ill so I spend 90% of my time in pjs but I still have quite a few clothes for some reason! Just realised, did your sponsors get access a full day before the rest of us? That seems like too long. Bad RUclips!
I thing i kept in mind when getting rid of things that come in pairs like pyjamas or top/skirt combos is that you can just keep the top or bottom piece. I kept 3 pj bottoms and no tops and one croptop but got rid of the matching skirt
catsandstrawberries Yeah, actually I I think she's entirely authentic about everything she says but she is just a little strange... I found her very sweet though and she's not wrong about the general approach! I'm making a huge effort to finish doing KonMari across my whole house before I get married this summer. :)
I'm the same! I don't buy many clothes, but I keep EVERYTHING because I'm a major hoarder. Also, when I try to clear out my wardrobe I tend to place things in my fabric-box instead. Because I know I can make it into something else. So although my wardrobe is emptier, my fabric-box just gets fuller, hehe. You did some amazing work clearing out so many things from your wardrobe. I really enjoyed this video. :)
What I do with old band merch shirts is I frame them with any moments of that band. I have a vamps shirt with my ticket wristband and confetti on and planing another couple for other bands. I I think you should do it for your first aid kit shirt, then you'll have some super cute wall art as well as good memories.
You can take your First Aid Kit merch shirt and frame it, that way you still have the nostalgia of your first concert and get a new use out of it as artwork. :) Also you can never own too many yellow/orange clothes. Definitely motivated to clean out the closet now, thank you! 🌻💛🧡
Just wanna share this. I fit my 2 pair of shorts again and I'm so happy! Not because I lost weight (actually don't know how it happened), but because they are such cool shorts. You advised to buy new clothes after gaining weight, but I genuinely couldn't find anything I would like. Also, I cropped my t-shirt and now I have a cropped top! I am so excited for summer! I don't know why I felt the need to share it with you. I have no friends, lol
this was fun. i clear out my closet every year when going back to uni. a lot of times when i'm deciding between 2 things i'll end up picking one haha. but once i have all my clothes in my memory it makes it easier bc i'm already scrutinizing whether i wear that piece of clothing, so if i don't i come back to it and give it away
i've finally made up my mind and i'll clear out my own closet/drawers to give away to the local orphanage! this video would make my mom happy hahaha, thanks for the boost hannah!
I found this video so helpful! I can't WAIT to do a big unhaul of my clothes this summer and I definitely going to revisit this video then for inspiration. If you can say goodbye, so can I!
I do it when I'm most motivated. So at the end/beginning of the year I clean stuff out, beginning of spring, and even though I'm no longer in school I still do it end of August or beginning of September. I find it easiest tackling one thing at a time. Like I went through the clothes in my closet first. Then I did my dresser one drawer at a time. It's hard though. I have a hard time getting rid of sweaters and I have a huge collection of scarves that I should make smaller but I can't bring myself to get rid of any of them.
Hannah! If you have t-shirts that mean a lot to you but you don't wear anymore, you should consider making or having made a t-shirt quilt! I have two I made, you just cut all the shirts into squares the same size, sew them together, and then sew them to a fleecy or soft material for the backside and ta-da you have a cozy blanket with all your favorite old shirts on it so you can look at them all the time!
Yes I agree totally. .... 👍☀☁
You could make the First Aid Kit shirt into art, if it doesn't fit you anymore. Like, just cut out the motive and put it in a frame. That's what I did with one of my my sentimental t-shirts, that didn't fit me anymore. Also, you could make a pillow out of it and practice your sewing a bit more 😂
Wow thank you for this briliant idea, I've got so many merch or concert t-shirts that don't really suit me but I still want to keep!!
If you have tons you could even make a patchwork blanket :)
This is what I was thinking of doing with my volunteering tops
I took photos of my sentimental band shirts and got rid of them. I don't miss them at all now but it makes me sad that they were probably burned and not re-used.
The idea of cutting or throwing away band shirts seems sacrilegious to me. If you are going to frame them why not fold the shirt instead? Also, i would suggest turning old band shirts into full back patches on a jacket eg. Denim jacket.
You’re so well disciplined! I always end doing my own catwalk for myself and trying things on as I go 😂
Imogen Weatherhead hi babe
Imogen Weatherhead I’m so confused how you’ve got that little symbol after your name that’s the exact same as what was embroidered on Hannah’s jacket😂
Jj the special symbol is for Sponsors. Check out Hannah’s previous video where she explains the RUclips pilot she’s taking part in
You never realise how much you have until you either A)have a clear out
Or
B) move house/apartment/Room
so freeking true!
I LOVE when people do these kinds of videos! It's such a good change from haul videos, which really encourage fast fashion and hoarding clothes imo :/
I'm definitely in need of a clear out and this has given me some great motivation
Although I've got the issue of 'work clothes' which means I've just got so many clothes
Personally, I like to do a little clearing out about once every 3 months so it doesn’t end up being a huge ordeal. I like to pick an area like my bookshelf or my closet and just pile everything on the bed and reorganize and toss as I go. It’s also a good opportunity to dust and redecorate.

TassifiedVlogs Totally agree! It's weird but it works. :)
I'll definitely be trying this, thanks!
This was oddly satisfying? I loved it. More like these please! ... I might have to go binge on a few decluttering videos....
I LOVE the term "fancy hoodie" haha

This make me want to organize my own closest so bad, but I have final exams 😐
Same :(
It's a brilliant way to procrastinate...😂
It is a quite productive way to procrastinate though as gemma chase pointed out
Pat Malia me too, my first exam is in 4 days and guess what I will be doing now instead of studying 😅
*hierunausprechlichennameneinfügen* omg 😂😂😂 well on the bright side, at least it's going to be done

Great video Hannah!
She’s doing much better than I would’ve done
This was very satisfying to watch so thank you for posting it! 😊
Recently did this when we listed our house on the market. Such a good feeling cleaning out!
So happy you made this video, have been loving your recent content SO MUCH.
The editing done in this video is magical ❤
Ugh, yes, these cleaning/organizing videos are so cathartic. Exactly what I needed to motivate myself to clean my own closet. :)
I organized my closet because of this and cut it in half! Thank you, lovely video
"this one doesn't bring me joy"... are you doing the kon mari method? :)
This is really motivating me to sort my wardrobe!
These videos are so satisfying

Although how you stayed focus for so long to finish I’d beyond me, I 100% would have got distracted many times along the way 😂
I'm going to do this over the summer before I move to uni!
I always keep my clothes for the season it isn't currently inside my suitcases, that way I'm using up already available space and I know where everything is!
you are ruthless!!
Haha! I have the orange zara top with the silky material. It is one of my very favourite items of clothing.
So very organised Hannah but then again what else would we expect from you :)
This has actually inspire me to clear out my own wardrobe! THANKS HANNAH!
Love a good wardrobe clear out.
I love clearing out my wardrobe. I tend to be super sentimental with things but clothes are usually easy for me to toss. I do however keep recent purchases and things I've had for years. I have a ton of tank tops that I never wear that I'll probably toss once I move or even before and other bits that just take up space.
I just watched you video, making me inspired to edit my wardrobe.
This makes me want to organize my life, I'll need to check out that book
I do the thing where I put clothes away after washing them in the front of my drawers and the inside-middle of my closet. That way things that I don't wear as much stay in the back/outer edges. Then every few months I can look at just the backs of drawers and the edges of my closet and decide with those things to keep or donate. Cause going through everything is definitely an undertaking.
Reading a life changing magic is really genuinely helpful because it gives you a bit of time to reflect on why you're doing it and think a bit more about the things that you keep in different ways so 100% recommend reading it (even if there's some stupid crap in it about what a woman should wear to sleep in)
I cleared out my wardrobe yesterday and it feels like my mind has been cleared too 🙌🏼
my strategy: generally the same as what u did but anything I'm unsure of I put away somewhere and a month later if I haven't gone to get it or worn it then they go.
I love First Aid Kit!!
Yeah you did so well!
Hannah you should be proud of your amazing and expansive collection of clothes. ❤️ 😊
These types of videos are so satisfying! I loved this Hannah! Please do similar vids in the future! xx
This is so satisfying!!
Aw first aid kit. My silver lining is my all time favourite song :)
I'm finding the life changing magic of tidying book really helpful!!
She bullshits a lot but there's also a lot of genuinely useful tips in there
catsandstrawberries Yeah, actually I I think she's entirely authentic about everything she says but she is just a little strange... I found her very sweet though and she's not wrong about the general approach! I'm making a huge effort to finish doing KonMari across my whole house before I get married this summer. :)
Loved this ❤ if you're doing anymore clear out on make up and shoes and things you should deffo film them 😊
OMG! I love First Aid Kit too, but I have never seen them, so jealous you have.
I liked this type of video because it felt like I was hanging out with a friend!
I spent all the video saying "no, don't throw it out!!!!" ...but it motivated me to get rid of stuff!
Loved this so much!
Love the editing!!
OMG I own the same ModCloth peacock dress-I actually wore it to prom!! Can’t give it away even though I can’t think of how else to wear it
omg that plack peacock dress was my prom dress!!
i've finally made up my mind and i'll clear out my own closet/drawers to give away to the local orphanage! this video would make my mom happy hahaha, thanks for the boost hannah!
