@@merphynapier42 That's a MASSIVE asset. EDIT: I ended up writing a massive rant, so I apologize in advance
People in the manga community are used to analyzing everything as manga, forgetting it's a story first and foremost. They grew up with Dragonball, that you are reading now, and a bunch of cookie-cutters that tried to copy it, so their lens got stunted, so to speak. The narrative in One Piece is way more akin to that of a novel, than to the medium and demographic it's in (shonen manga), imo, and most manga reviewers (not all of them, of course) have only ever read shonen manga, not even comics from other countries, and are extremely used to, and sometimes only capable of seeing, the one style of story-telling. And of course, there are a gazillion styles within manga itself, as in any other medium, but many tropes (narrative and stylistic) are very much cultural and/or based on the target audience, and Oda sure uses many manga stylistic tropes, but he also incorporates a bunch of resources from tons of different mediums, cultural backgrounds, and styles. Actually, coming to think of it, you pointed one out the first time you read Thriller Bark, the pacing of the narrative doesn't fit shonen manga, but it's closer to a Gothic spooky novel; that slow unnerving set-up to the big sonorous end. And I have an even better example, Fishman Island. Called bad and weak by many, because the fights were a cakewalk, and Hody is "a bad antagonist" because he was not a threat to the Strawhats, while missing the entirety of the actual conflict and absolutely everything that wasn't happening at surface level, because in the sort of fanmade "sub-genre" known as battle shonen (which One Piece doesn't belong to, the story is not about the fights, the fights are just a narrative tool, but many people cannot understand that) if the fight is not bombastic and showcases a power-up, the whole thing is bad (and that's the same reason that to this day there are people complaining about the fight between Luffy and Katakuri)

The themes/ideologies/character-traits of Garp and Koby are clearly laid out from the beginning and are executed later in the chapter. Both succeed in their missions (Koby = save others; Garp = save the future). Garp’s mission as the elder/mentor is a more wise/thematic take of Koby’s mission. All the parallels. Merphy, I believe that Garp capture is such a good set up for multiple stories beat now.
    1. It give Luffy legit reason to fight Blackbeard
    2. A rematch and a chance for Luffy to save another family who might die by the hand Black Beard. And this time the Strawhat is there and they are not going anywhere
    3. Sword might ignore the goverment and join force with the Strawhat. This will be a repeat of the Godvalley incident where marine and pirate collide
    4. A repeat of marine force abd this time Garp might accept Luffy for what he is. Potential more character development between Garp and Luffy
    5. Dragon might involve
    6. Garp is the best character to replace all these repeat better than Sabo, due to how emotionally involves we are to him

Really good video. To add something, I think that Helmeppo deserves a recognition.
That guy started as a runt almost as bad as Stelly or any noble in Goa, almost killed Zoro for a complete stupid reason and was extremely weak while crying "Daddyyyyyyyy". Now he is a Rokushiki user, he has an Usopp-like cowardice that doesn't stop him to do right by the mission and fulfill his role.
He stayed with Garp, Grus and Koby against all the pirates on Beehive, and then fought alone to stop all the people in the arm so Koby and Grus could complete their task.
I like to see how this runt has genuinely grow into a good and respectable marine, because it shows that Garp not only can make the good and willingly Koby into a better version of himself, but he was also able to help a runt with only specks of a good man behind to become what he is today.

I really love that when Koby's immediate reaction is to doubt the plan, Garp's reaction is to remind them that you have to be able to take decisive action. That one line says so much. You just know Garp has been thrust into uncertain situations countless times in his life. Especially in a world of devil fruits, and the unpredictability of the Grand Line in general, it is impossible to be prepared for every scenario that can come up. He really flexed his experience in that moment. His knowledge of the capabilities of men; to the extent that he believed in the strength of Koby, who didn't even know his own strength, his ability to remain calm in the face of impending doom. Just perfect.

Oda’s slowly turning Merphy into a weekly chapter reviewer. 😂
You can also say that Kuzan followed Garp’s teachings too.
Assuming he’s still a double agent of sorts he sacrificed the old man
to save himself (and so that he doesn’t blow his cover) and the ship of full of younger people.
Either way, it was nice of him to freeze Garp’s wound though.
Can’t wait for Blackbeard to go to Buggy to turn Garp’s bounty in only for Buggy to not have 3 billion beri’s to pay him. He just never expected someone to be able to turn in a bounty that high.
I expect Garp will die sometime, just not before Luffy/Dragon get to see him again.
There’s a theory that Blackbeard will use Pudding’s power to look at Garp’s memories of the God Valley incident. That’d be pretty cool.
After all this hype I’d almost forgotten about the Egghead Arc, the place where all our main characters are. 😂

If I'm remembering right when Luffy and co first fought Kuzan Chopper said that if Robin's heart froze she was done for, so they had to quickly warm her back up to keep her alive. While I agree there are probably more advantages to keeping Garp alive for the BB pirates maybe they had no choice since Garp broke out of Kuzan's ice before. A lot of people have theorized that they would try to get his bounty from the Cross Guild and we know they don't care if the bounties are dead or alive.

The more i re-read this chapter the less I see marineford. And the more I see the lord of the coast scene. It is about giving up something for the future. And making that bet. Shanks bet an arm on Luffy. Garp, bet his life on Koby. And while his own beliefs on saving old people may undervalue his sacrifice. Its measure will be set by Koby's actions. And while yes it was Marineford. It was so much more than that.

as great as egghead as been, admittedly a lot of the enjoyment so far has come from the pure insanity and hype of everything that's going on. the buildup to get to this moment, all the payoffs to old setups, and setups for future payoffs have been incredibly fun to read, but 1088 was genuinely just an incredible chapter, setting all context and hype aside. i honestly think it's the best written one piece chapter in a VERY long time. at the very least it's my favorite chapter since possibly whole cake island

FIRST RULE in FIRST AID - "Never pull something that stab you especially ice pick or knife to prevent further blood loss" as you can see on the last panel the icicle pierce right through Garp is to halt drop more of his blood and being it to be ice makes it to be frozen some of the blood flow or and veins to rupture any further.

This color spread is one of my favorites. And I love that you can tell that it’s not only the East Blue 5 but the East Blue 5 from Arlong Park. Maybe ever. This did not feel like a death for Garp. It felt like the setup for another Luffy rescue mission. But I'm going to predict this rescue will be successful because the rest of the Straw Hats will be there. And he won't be fighting against other Marines as we say in this chapter, they’re reticent to go against a Yonko.

Considering that Garp has probably been captured, I feel like Oda is going to have Garp's fate mirror Ace's. It's kinda the same situation right now, both have been captured by Blackbeard (or his crew) and the Marines are probably going to try to save Garp instead of bargaining with one of their arch enemies. I'm so excited for the next chapters.

Ok I think this is by far my favorite or one of my favorite chapters in a while. Holy cow… Koby doing Kuzans and Garps training without Garp even knowing was great! And finally Koby is getting closer to Luffys level with that punch! And is this where Garp dies? Like damn I was not expecting that! Also if he does die or get captured maybe that will bring in Dragon and Luffy working together to either get revenge if he dies or save him if he’s still alive? Idk you can never predict what Oda will do next but that’s my guess

I've always found debates about power scaling and conquerer's haki to be missing the point. It's not about power levels, it's about the characters and their emotions at stake. To me, Conquerer's Haki might as well just be a little gold star sticker that Oda sticks onto every character who he wants you the reader to pay a little extra attention to. It's fluff.

It's a shame to see that some other people are underrating this chapter because Garp's send-off wasn't as "cool" as Whitebeard's. A lot of people care more about how cool the fights are than how emotional the story is.

He knows that what he stand for is right (in it's own way) but also see how rotten it is from the inside. 🥲 Koby will fulfill Garp's will and change the marines for the better

If you like the team fight aspect of stuff like this and Thriller Bark, I would personally like to suggest Black Clover to you.
Teamwork is one of BC’s strong suits; it has a huge emphasis on characters combining their strengths and abilities to take down threats bigger than themselves and it lends itself extremely well to collaborative character development.
I personally think the series has a lot more to offer than people say if you give it the time of day and pay it more narrative attention than most people do (which I know won’t be an issue for you) so I would love to see you give it a fair chance someday!
