    I was in middle school when Saul died and we learned Robin's backstory during the Enies Lobby arc. I cried at that time, because I was dealing with some dark thoughts - this idea of keep going to find a will to live was so powerful to young me. That Uber famous panel is like a talisman to me. I'm now in a way better place , I found people like Saul in my life. I, a grown ass dude now, had tears in my eyes during the last chapters just like Robin.

    My interpretation as to why the WG didn't inform the soldiers why they were destroying Ohara is that they were trying to stop the spread of information, so they didn't want to spread that information themselves. If they said "Hey kill everyone who knows X, the soldiers would then know X (or at least know about X). Instead the WG just said they were all devils that needed to be destroyed and they assumed their knowledge would be destroyed along with them.

      @@shivanggarg2270 not really a plothole, it's something that is quite well known that a soldier's job isn't to question orders, but to execute them. Letting them know would 1) go against that, making them more curious as to why are those scholars so special and 2) actually give them further insight that they could pass on to the next generations. Also 3) give them a reason go to against the orders and put their opinions first
      Had they informed them, they would need to kill them, which is again something not that easy given that the operation seemed quite large and they even had an admiral involved, who they wouldn't really be able to kill, but his power was needed at the time to make sure that the job was done.

    About the "ignorant soldiers" part at 5:45. Ohara was destroyed because they "knew too much", which wouldn't be a just reason for that scale of retribution, at least in the eyes of those soldiers. They were probably told something along the line of "the library was actually being used for planning/commiting some criminal activities". Furthermore, revealing that there is a secret of such a great significance is what the WG would want to do the least. We can see the same thing happening in the current timeline as even the members of CP0 don't know WHY they are to assassinate Dr. Vegapunk, they only know WHAT they have to do.

    I had a while to think about Saul's resurrection, and the thing is - we never saw him die. Aokiji (well, back then he was just Kuzan) froze him solid, but we also saw people getting better after that - both Luffy and Robin got thawed out after their encounter with Aokiji on Long Ring Long Land, after all. And there was a LOT of fire around him, so it's not unreasonable to assume he survived, it's just that nobody dared to.

      I think the WG definitely did not tell everyone why, only the higher ups otherwise there would be more Sauls in Ohara... but I think part of the issue was Spandam's stupid dad was the one that lead the charge and he called a buster call on the place which encourages the mindless annihilation. They probably just assumed the people there weren't able to save anything as they weren't scholars. I also imagine the Nobels would think as long as Robin is caught, they have no problems, no one would be left to really take advantage of those books... Which... I guess to be fair also don't have ALL the information on the kingdom.

    Part of the reason I haven't ever really been bothered by the Fakeout deaths in One Piece is that I think one of the major themes of the story is that tragedy is for the past, Luffy brings hope and light and life wherever he goes and so in the end its going to be okay. This is, imo, reinforced over and over again and was most clear in Alabasta when Luffy told Vivi that it isn't a game, that people die, but then they didn't, Luffy saved the country, him and Vivi brought Alabasta back from the brink. Pell is the worst executed fakeout, but I still think it just reinforces that Luffy and the Strawhats are forces that create and restore.

    • @PedroBoteon
      @PedroBoteon 2 года назад +2

      But people *did* die in Alabasta, first that comes to mind was the royal guard-like group that tried to fight Crocodile after drinking something or another only for Croc to refuse to fight them. And many people certainly died in that melee that happened when the rebel and loyalist armies clashed.

    • @NKMitch42
      @NKMitch42 2 года назад

      Not nearly as many as should have, none of it is lingered on beyond its initial appearance and we see so many regular folks survive alot in Alabasta, I'm not convinced there was much death at all even among civilians in the grand scheme of the arc.

      Yeah, way to maake sure your story has 0 stakes. A story doesnt need death to happen, but repeatedly faking deaths makes your story have 0 stakes. No one's going to die, ever. Not a minor character for sure.

    Overall, this feels like pre-Timeskip One Piece and truly has started like an all-time arc. Egghead could go down top 5.

    3 things:
    1. We already knew why ohara was wiped out. Clover talked about the ancient kingdom to the gorosei via den den mushi before he got shot.
    2. The marines likely wouldnt know that all knowledge on ohara was blasphemous. Likely the few marines that found it couldnt be bothered to pull out thousands of waterlogged books to check if they have information that the world government would kill them for knowing.
    3. The giants in vegapunk's flashback are hajrudin from dresserosa and his crew! They were probably already pirating back then because of how slowly giants age. Love how much oda ties everything together

    I don't mind fakeout deaths necessarily, I feel like if you never see the character in the main story again it's acceptable. However major characters (Kinemon) yeah I can see the frustration. My only guess as to why it keeps happening is to have as many characters as possible available for the Final War (and MASSACRE a lot of them in the process). That said, Saul was incredible to see again

  • @anotherpawn

    Oda didn't want to spoil future plotpoints so Toki (who jumped forward in time) wasn't allowed to talk about her mission. I think it is because you're not used to reading weekly, and thus expected answers in the moment, but Oda tends to introduce a plotpoint and then let it stew for a few hundred chapters before coming back to it which is why they seem forgotten when you're going through a long arc (this can be seen with Ace in Thriller Bark, Dragon who just appeared in Louge Town and disappeared without a word until Enies Lobby). Knowing who Joyboy was and Toki's mission would probably spoil the One Piece which is why we weren't allowed to hear it in Wano.
    I honestly think that Wano and the Kozuki family (which is represented my the moon) were allied with the ancient kingdom which was led by Joyboy (the sun). This is why Momonosuke and Luffy can hear the voice of all things, they're the modern day sun and moon since they have inherited the ancient will of Joyboy and the Kozuki. This is why Momo and the Wano story is so important to the narrative, and why an ancient weapon is built into the nation. Here's some stuff that's important: Toki is from Wano (she has a Japanese last name so she's not a fishman), and Joyboy's promise to the Mermaid princess probably indicates that the Fishmen were a separate people from the Ancient Kingdom.
    I personally think that the AK either was run by Giants with the King (Joyboy) wearing the giant strawhat as his crown, or the Lunarians with Joyboy being a lunarian who ate the gomu gomu no mi and turned giant that way. I do think that the Fishmen, the Chandians, the Ancient Kingdom, the Giants, the Lunarians, and Wano were allies against the 20-nation alliance, and that's why they aren't a part of the WG, and why these nations tend to have old structures with poneglyphs and clues to ancient weapons.

    The world government is so focused on not telling anyone any information that it’s starting to become detrimental to their work. Even Rob Lucci proposing a question about the Lulucia incident is taboo.
    If CP0 can’t even know why they’re doing tasks like “killing Vegapunk” l, lowly Navy soldiers would have no business knowing why they’re doing what they’re doing. I think it makes sense that they didn’t do anything about the books., especially since it wasn’t what they were tasked with doing. This is the fault of the elders.

    I think the best part about Saul isn't just the narrative importance of Saul as to why he was kept alive, or the emotional high the reader experiences with Robin being happy Saul's alive, it's the implication that Aokiji didn't kill Saul which makes Aokiji much more interesting because with him sparing Saul we're more sure now than ever that Aokiji's good and I'm more certain that he only joined Blackbeard just to use the crew as a means for some important end rather than to help Blackbeard.

I don’t know if it will be that way, maybe there’s something out there to show that there was already inequality, but I just have this gut feeling.
