The thing about natural resources not being explained as a main reason for war in One Piece is definitely true. Because it wasn't explained but rather explicitly shown in Alabasta, where the conflict was born out of the lack of water or the battle for the single spec of earth in Skypia. And even Wano was a battle for resources from Kaido's perspective. So there definitely has been some buildup before.

Those resources weren't used as energy sources though. Alabasta needed water to not die of thirst, in Skypiea the earth was holy or part of their history/a promise. Kaido was producing weapons (or at least gathering the resources for weapons) in Wano to get money and expand his influence/control.
Resources have always been important but they were never used to "create energy" to do something else.

Knowing Oda's style, he is usually very straight forward and when he says things he means them in the most literal way. So i'm thinking maybe in the ancient kingdom there was a scientific way of creating devil fruits, and people literally wished for powers to be made for them. This will also explain why the other nations united against them, because they had a fearsome technology.

Also Vegapunk was surprised about the Gum-Gum-Fruit because it was not in the OLD encyclopedia (it's in the new one obviously as a cover up)... which suggests that new DFs cannot be "born" anymore. @@felixowen2693 The scanlation makes more sense imo.
      Viz interpretation:
There are multiple versions coming out, most likely because there are new infos on fruits. This would mean that new fruits are created or discovered. But it would make no sense for Vegapunk to frame it that way, because why would you not just say "in the books", why specifically talk about old ones? Because the natural conclusion if several versions came out, that the newest one is the most reliable. Also that would mean the newest encyclopedia also does not have infos about the Gum-Gum, which kinda contradicts chapter 1, where Shanks calls it that.
      Scanlation interpretation:
There are 2 encyclopedias. One old one (the original) which included the Nika fruit but no Gum-Gum... and a new one, to cover up the Nika fruit. There it would make sense to specifically say the old one has no mention of the Gum-Gum, because pretty sure people knew about the Gum-Gum because of the new encyclopedia. Shanks for example calls it that in chapter 1.
Would be nice from someone with Japanese knowledge to know which is the correct translation, but I would guess the scanlation one.

While I still think CP0 were portrayed as dummies in this chapter, they did say that orders told by Den Den Mushi would not work, which is why they had to attack Sentomaru and why they can't just have one of the 5 Elders order them via phone.
This means that Vegapunk would need to be present in front of CP0 (his personal sent killers) and order the seraphims around faster thank any 3 of then can kill him, which, considering Lucci somehow got past Luffy while he was distracted to hurt Sentomaru, is very improbable.

    • @nichescenes
      @nichescenes 7 месяцев назад

That still doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t Vega have some around him. And he will see them and order them from afar. Lucci is fast but he’s not faster than the speed of sound fast. Even then Lucci can assume he has the entire straw hat crew aka the same crew that packed him up and is now a yonko and has a fleet of 1000s. I think the explaination is simple. Lucci is just straight forward and was like ehh I’ll take em out and them getting in the way whatever. Like in real life going to take on the smartest man in the world on their own island. They needed to send an admiral. But this is world government. Same people who sent one admiral to pack up a yonko crew on their territory. Same people who let luffy go free with minor issue when they know he had the special fruit. Also they let shanks take the fruit and while shanks was on a rink dink island they didn’t buster call it and sink the island.

The point about the other CP agents attempting to come to Egghead is also interesting because it potentially ties back to Wano. If we remember one of Orochi's demands was he wanted Vegapunk and at the time we assumed the WG never brought him just because they didn't want to. With this new information it seems like maybe they were actually trying to nab & bring him at the time but he kept sinking all the ships they sent to pick him up. Cool stuff.

Loved the chapters and I love the "Mother nature" inclusion and also the idea it could be a reference to IMU (UMI is Sea in Japanese, Ummi can be Mother in Arabic). Imu hating Devil fruit users will make a lot of sense and explain a lot.
I believe the ship disappearing could be because of Lilith and her robot (The shark). When she met the Strawhat, she mentioned how she could not override the primal instinct of the shark, so it was eating and destroying ships. Interesting words when we think about what Vegapunk said about Zoan taking control of the user during an awakening.
I think Vegapunk speech about conflict and energy has not much to do with what we currently live in the One Piece world, but what happened in the past (Void century) and the history of humanity in general. As a scientist who is fascinated by the Void century, maybe he is seeing a bigger picture and questions like energy and resources seem to be key at that time.
Not going too much into details, but the Space Pirates (ties with Vegapunk) and Enel Cover story was about energy (Enel devil fruit reviving a city) and Resources (we learn people from the moon ran out of ressources ).
Also, Vegapunk is saying it to Luffy who is from Foosha Village (Windmill) which is an energy based Island, using Wind. Vegapunk's buddy, Luffy's father, the most wanted man in the story, seems to control wind. Coincidences? I will let you come to your own conclusion, like Rayleigh 😄

Though energy being the cause of wars is not often at the forefront of the story, if you choose to view "energy" as natural resources it can become more clear to see.
Drum Island - Wapol's plan to rise further into power was hoarding the country's most valueable resource to himself (the doctors). Though this isn't as strong depending on if you can reason that humans count as resources.
Alabasta - The main conflict began over a water shortage
Skypiea - Enel hoarded Vearth for himself, which is the most valueable resource in the Sky Islands because it is the only soil they have to grow anything. This is a large part in why the Shandians rally to fight him.
Whole Cake Island - Islands are ransacked with their entire militaries left in shambles for a literal grocery run. Additionally, the entire reason Big Mom holds territory outside of Totoland is because she wants islands dedicated to giving her sweets.
Wano - Kaido's planned war could only be fought using the natural resources of Wano
    etc.

Vega Punk's speech becomes very poetic and aggrandizing during the Devil Fruit lore dump. Also he's being a good deal more vague, as Japanese tends to be, than he is in English. The way I read it, nothing he said was intended to be taken literally. That said, one of Oda's most common tricks is to take something that is a gag, an exaggeration or really anything figurative and making it a fact of the world.

-Kaku recognised the hologram as a space monster. Confirming that people have some kind of knowledge of space. That and this whole talk of infinite power supplies (aka an electricity man) is making me wonder if the Eneru cover story is somehow going to become more relevant to the series soon. It is one of the more random cover stories after all.
-Dragon will probably be revealed to have the highest level of authority over the Seraphim during whatever war is to come with him.
-Since Sentomaru referred to Kizaru as ‘Uncle’ back in Sabaody we can assume they are related if not close to each other. So Kizaru probably won’t be too happy with Lucci when he arrives at Egghead. And since he wouldn’t have clearance to attack Luffy he may have to step in to stop Lucci. I wonder what his unrelated mission to Egghead is.
-I do wonder where Lucci’s character is going from here on.
He doesn’t seem to be as loyal to the government as he used to be.
He’s disobeyed the government by attacking Luffy and on the ship to Egghead he was beginning to ask questions about stuff he shouldn’t be. Sure he has a personal grudge against Luffy but this is also the guy who was so dedicated he spent 5 years undercover and mute as a shipwright for his mission.
-Interesting that Awakened Lucci also has that smoky aura around his body like Luffy does. Is that a Zoan thing since people like Doflamingo didn’t have it while using awakened abilities. Or is it a sign that you have fully mastered your Awakening or something.
-With Sentomaru, Kizaru and (presumably) Kuma all about to show up, all we need is Rayleigh to and we have all the people involved with the fighting during the Straw Hat separation together again.
Maybe Kuma will pull a reverse of that situation and make the people opposing Luffy disappear?
-Waiting for Seraphim Hancock to ally with Luffy since Vegapunk has stated it’s hard to overwrite personalities. And Hancock’s simping is probably such a strong part of her personality it even becomes part of her clone.

    Imu
    Umi= sea
I think alot of people have already pointed out this coincidence, but i can add a bit more to it.
Imu-sama was born from the sea's hatred towards devil fruits, she is essentially one with the sea. She cant "control" the sea but she has deep connection to it, they share the same emotions towards devil fruit users which is loathe. She hates people with D in their names because they are the Dreamers, their ancestors were the reason devil fruits became a reality. They are the enemy of god which is the sea, not the celestial dragons.

Whether devil fruits come into existence through metaphysical means or physical ones, I love Vegapunk's theory about it. So many theories online give very specific and detail explanations that make them sound more like science fiction, but that's not one piece, it has elements of it, but one piece is a romantic fantasy, and this ties so beautifully to the main themes of the series, dreams and wills, this basically makes DFs the dreams the people of the past had for humanity.
I'm also soooooo down for the sea to become a more relevant existence in the story, with more lore to it.
Finally I love how Oda has handled Vegapunk, before we met him he was a vague existence that we could expect to have the answers to everything, but Oda showed us he's a person like everybody else, with his own story and circumstances. From the reason why he joined the WG instead of the freedom fighters which make him more interesting and continues to make the political and moral side of one piece so interesting, cuz it's not just pure black and white, to the answers he's been able to give us, while not really telling us the full truth, cuz it wouldn't make sense for him to know all of that without reaching laugh tale, and that would also just devalue the moment where we learn the true history so much.
This arc continues to be so amazing!!! Also I get why you wanted Lucci to punch Luffy, but I just think Lucci shouldn't be able to do that up to that point, and more than him starting the fight, I think it was more of Lucci understanding it was imposible for Luffy to look the other way and not get involved, of course he was going to fight him.

You talking about the trope of a sentient sea made me think of the Battle of Edd War between the Roger Pirates and Golden Lion Shiki. Shiki’s fleet heavily outnumbered the Roger Pirates until out of nowhere Shiki and his fleet were basically swallowed up by the ocean from massive waves of a storm. I always wondered if Roger or one of his crew members had some crazy ability that caused this, but maybe it was some type of Mother Nature force in play? 🤔

You remember the scene back in Punk Hazard when the crew were running away from the slime salamander of Ceasar, then just randomly shown was the scene on the wagon were stacks of apples were there then one of the apples just changed its appearance and suddenly turned into a devil fruit? It was so random and out of place it did not even have any importance during that arc. BUT, given the explanation of Vegapunk, that's probably how DFs manifest. The desires of the people of the past are expressed as DF in the future. So it's not like a Genie that if you wish it, it will appear right in front of you. Instead, it will appear at a random place in a random time that you probably even won't know about. That's probably also why most of the time you don't know which kind of DF you've eaten unless you tried it because of the countless possibility of human desires. Or it could also just be that's how a DF reappear after it's previous owner died or something. THE POINT is, we're already introduced on how DFs just randomly pop-out or turned into from an already existing fruit. Praise Oda for his foreshadowing and consistency.

I like the idea that dreams manifest devil fruits, cause it explains the Paramecia class. Why would someone make the Jacket-Jacket fruit, that doesn't seem like a project someone would do on a whim. But because they could be manifested into being, cause someone wanted to be more than themselves. It also relates to the idea of Haki which is will, so if Devil Fruits are dreams and haki is will it would make Luffy's journey much more impact full. He dreams of being the freest man but does he have the will to see it through, same coin of why haki cancels out devil fruits. Its the will to destroy dreams, your will verses mine, whose is greater. I never liked the idea of devil fruits being Science experiments

The reason why Lucci immediately attacked Atlas with one of his stronger attacks was likely because he wanted to take her out before she could order S Bear. It is likely that he would keep doing that with any other Vegapunk that showed up. Vegapunk has to physically be there to order them and if so then Lucci can easily take them out. So in a way, S Bear could be there to draw them out. Then Lucci just has to order the Seraphim to stand down if any orders did get through.

These chapters are so intriguingly mysterious! Everything Vegapunk says is so open to interpretation at this point. But one thing that I really love is that the awakened Lucci now has the divine attributes (of the flames wrapping around him like the flowing band that Japanese gods are oftern portrayed with) that Luffy got for gear 4. Does this mean he too can become some sort of god? Do more fruits have this ability? Does ALL of them? Although I don't recall Katakuri having the divine flowing band of flames or other that Luffy and Lucci have, despite also being awakened. And I mean, Enel did put a ring of drums around him as if he were Raijin, but that wasn't precisely caused by his fruit, heh.
I talked a little about what I thought about the translation in a thread below, but I'll put it here too in case more people are interested:
In Japanese it litarally says "the rubber fruit, something like that" // "old/ancient devil fruit reference book(s?) in it it/(them?) is not recorded", so it's hard to tell if he's comparing it to one or more recent ones, or even if he's comparing it to any at all! Or if there are several old reference books, at that. Japanese generally doesn't use plural, or definite articles.
Also, he doesn't say that the Nika fruit was included in that reference book, but that "[(This) very likeness of a god] is only recorded in old/ancient manuscrips". He uses a different word for the writings in which it was recorded.
A lot of what is said in this chapter can be interpreted in several (correct) ways at this point, and it's just really hard to tell which the contextually correct version is before we get more information. I don't envy the official translators!
Personally, I think that Vegapunk means that devil fruits are the "possibilities resulting from someone's wish of human development" in a general way, rather than specifically. Or at least that Oda wants to leave it linguistically a bit uncertain in order to make future revelations! I think the second part of what he says can be translated (literally, that is, not a translation you'd want to put in a finished work) as "In the multidute of futures of humanity there are abilites".
To summarise, I think that he's saying that the dreams and wishes of various humans can result in a devil fruit in one of the possible futures in which humanity develops. And as of yet it's not clear what the process actually is.
(I do work as a translator, although thankfully not for One Piece).

  • @Phillylove100

11:23-11:30 So everyone seems to be disagreeing on the translation. I have heard multiple people saying that it says something along the lines of all devil fruits were dreamed up by someone from a different dimension. And now a big theory is that Oda did a self-insert into the story.

10:43 I wonder if Oda was trying to connect an idea from the real world (wars of resources) to One Piece (as he often does, like racism, discrimination, etc.) but due to not showing it in his story, it missed the mark a little?
20:27 Admittedly, if Vegapunk teleported to command the Seraphim, it would give CP0 an opportunity to kill him. My thought that they won’t truly be in control is that Atlas is said to still be alive on the battlefield, so later on, she may command the Seraphim to turn again. But I think this is something to make CP0 more of a threat and this arc to have more stakes. After all, I think most people were thinking Luffy would wipe the floor with Lucci. But if Lucci was awakened… and there’s 3-4 Seraphim against Luffy… and 2 Seraphim intimidated (but didn’t defeat) Blackbeard… it would be a somewhat valid match up for Luffy to fight more seriously (since he’s kind of been not taking it too seriously). Edit: Also, Kizaru too!

I think the reason CP0 brought S-Bear is because that was the pretext for their arrival to the island. They were still trying to act like the only reason they came to the island was to return S-Bear. Maybe if they knew that Vegapunk had already figured out their plan, they wouldn't have bothered bringing him. Also, they probably assume that they could easily overpower Vegapunk, so that his higher position on the Seraphim command hierarchy would be moot. And I guess they figured they could easily take out Sentomaru as well, which seems to be the case given what Lucci did to him.

I agree that, this 'we fight over energy sources' thing wasn't talked about nearly enough in the past to feel that important.
My point of view: People started wars for different reasons (or so they think) only Vegapunk saw those wars for what they really are : fights over energy sources. Even the participants might think, they fight over political or economic power but VP understands that, if provided with enough energy all these issues would disappear.

    @ order of command:
An awakened Lucci surely is able to clear this up, if it wouldn't be for Luffy being present. I feel like the order getting explained was more for us than anything. They were prepared, brought S-Bear with them, and with the limitation of orders not being able to get into a Seraphim via a Den-Den Mushi, Sentomaru and/or Satellites/Stella need to be present, literally in line of sight of CP0 to effectively order any Seraphim, which puts them into assassination range.
And while Stussy and Kaku might be able to hold off some number of Seraphims for x amount of time, Awakened Lucci slips past the defenses and kills / makes one of he higher-ups in order unable to speak.
Only Sentomaru seems to be able to fight with all we know right now, so killing any Vegapunk body on sight should be easy for a ruthless, speedy, awakened assassin.
Kaku makes this hierarchy reveal look like they're stupid indeed, but if Luffy wasn't there, be sure that CP0 would succeed easily.

A united theme for a lot of the major characters is that their motivated by and truly believe in them. Two things:
    1. Kuma was on Mariejois during the Reverie, Bonney saw him. It was during this event that the Revolutionary Army rescued him, and Reverie ran while the Strawhats were on Wano. So unless you're making the claim that the SH stayed on Wano for 2 months after Reverie was concluded (a hard sell for me) I'm pretty sure Kuma is more like 2 weeks free from captivity.
    2. Vegapunk has claimed that he's made his inventions while chasing the technological advancements of 800 years ago, and Vegapunk has successfully synthesized Devil Fruits. So I wonder if Devil Fruits weren't manmade by a certain lost Kingdom. Or weren't made in response to a certain lost Kingdom's Ancient Weapons. I definitely feel like they have to be connected to the Will of D, though. I've always thought that stood for "the Will of the Devil".

what do you think Luffy's Dream is?
    My criteria:
1 -It's very Luffy like (Nami said it's very like him)
2 -It needs to be weird and backward, illogical (Usopp and Sanji were questioning his reasoning)
    3 -Almost impossible to achieve
4 -Gol D. Roger could have the same dream
-Being King of the pirates does not guaranty it but makes it possible (Luffy claim that it would be possible if he would be a PK, Frankie says he needs to be PK to have a chance)
5 -It needs to be childish
    6 -Shocking and ridicules
7 -Needs to be somehow already alluded to
I think the perfect fit is "I want to eat for free wherever I go"
    1. it's very like Luffy (eating connected to freedom)
    2. The logic that if he is great, then everybody would want to buy him a meal
    3. kind of as much impossible as it gets, (maybe if you steal, but Luffy is a Pirate for a reason too)
    4. God D Roger was not trying to rule the world, he wanted to be GREAT to achieve his dream. "Eating for free" the same logic as Luffy
    5. It's very childish
    6. If some child said that, it would be funny. But if someone had it as a serious goal, it would be shocking
    7. In every arc, Luffy is feed by someone for free, and then he helps them. I think it's very strong foreshadowing

The part about devil fruits is extra cool because it means that devil fruits are literally inherited will. It lines up with the themes of the series as well as Gear 5 does.

You were spot on with the parallel, but gave the wrong example with Charlos. In Ennis Lobby they burned the world government flag and were told, “this symbolizes a declaration of war” and the Straw Hats not caring about the consequence.

Tbh I think the way Oda drew this "skirmish" is the absolute best way it could have been portrayed. Not because of thematical likenesses but for the same reason CP0 *shouldn't* have engaged to begin with; Luffy is a yonko. He just defeated "the strongest creature in the world", so it wouldn't make any sense whatsoever if there even was a miniscule challenge. Even if Lucci has become stronger the bar Luffy has set is so ridiculously high an actual hit would undermine all of his development as a fighter.
Also, I think it's been heavily hinted that the reason the government ships disappeared has been due to the cyborg sea kings as Lilith mentioned they have eaten ships in the past due to inability to remove all emotions from living specimen.

I would love for you to rereview the Reverie Arc, Levely Arc. There are a couple things you missed to talk about, and One thing in particular. There's a moment where we see the kings and queens at the meeting and Shirahoshi is about to be enslaved by our most hated celestial dragon, only to be saved by another celestial dragon... The same celestial dragon from Fishman Island that the queen saved all those years ago.. And, I think that its a bit surprising that you never talked about a moment like that when it meant the queens actions impacted such an evil person. I'd also love to hear you talk about the connection between this and Fishman Island, Thank you!

You brought up a good thing about luffy/Rogers dream being so important. Could there be a devil fruit which encompasses that dream?
I still think there might be a chance that devil fruits are inspired by the Nordic mythology of utgard loki who could make illusions by manifesting things such as concepts into beings in order to win a competition against thor. He made a wildfire as a person to win an eating competition (which’s sounds like ace and his logia). Made the personification of thought to win a race as thought was faster than action (which is like a paramecia) and made the world serpent as a kitty cat and challenged thor to lift it up (which reminds me of mythical zoans).
Earlier one shots of one piece state that devil fruits come from the ‘illusion tree’ so it make sense as being illusions. Vegapunk even says they devil fruits are kind of in another world to put reality.

I think the statement about the devil fruits supports a theory I've had for a while that they're basically the ultimate form of haki. We've already seen stuff like Sanji igniting himself or Zoro's demon form thing, and I'm pretty sure it's confirmed that those are related to conqueror's haki. The way I see it, they're using their willpower to create these effects and the stronger their will gets the more their powers will resemble fruit powers. And I think if someone manages to fully realize a power like that then when they die the power stays behind and condenses into a fruit, and it's connected to the whole inherited will theme since the fruits are basically made of someone else's residual willpower.
So basically I think it's less like saying "hey, I wish I had a power" and having a fruit suddenly appear, and more that your haki becomes so strong that you can use it to manifest a power which then remains behind as a fruit after your death.

While I get your point about the command structure, the impression I got was that the controller needed to be physically present to give orders and not have them overridden. And Lucci's actions seem to inform this. The instant he spots someone higher in the chain than them he instantly one-shots them. Atlas. Sentoumaru (which you did pronounce correctly!) Both of them he went hard and fast at the first opportunity.
Speaking of control, I wonder if Oda will use S-Snake to paralell Hancock in some way. Hancock obeyed Government orders out of a love for Luffy. I wonder if love likewise will be what allows S-Snake to instead *disobey* orders, whether a love of her father(s? mothers? parents?) Vegapunk or if she develops a precocious schoolgirl crush on Luffy.
Admittedly, this is mostly in service to my own desire to see Hancock and S-Snake interact. Whether they a) bond over Luffy, b) fight over Luffy, or c) Hancock declaring S-Snake her and Luffy's child when first seeing her white hair next to Gear 5th's.
I just want S-Snake to be free and have the childhood Hancock never did.

One of the things that interested me in these chapters was that vegapunk mentioned that his inventions could be spread around the world with an "eternal flame." In the OP world this would be possible if law used his power to grant eternal youth to a certain person with a fire devil fruit...!
