I listened to the dt770 at guitar center along with every single one of their headphones on display for close to 2 hours. I listened to them once and never went back to them. Way to thin and bright sounding for me. Theyd give me a headache in 5 minutes. I did like their comfort though.
Bless up sean been watching your videos for over 4yrs now and my mix has improved I watch this video a while back and now I need a new set og headset so im here again. One love bless.
Thank you for the nice summary of the reviews I've heard also from other users of the same headphones. If only there were something like DT 770 but open-back or at least semi-open. Closed-back always make my ears overheat and also give some claustrophobic sense - I always want to take them off often to hear if somebody is not trying to talk to me or call me on the phone :D
I would actually recommend the ATH-M40x headphones over the M50x. The M40x has a much flatter frequency response and is a bit less expensive. They are both still fantastic headphones though! However, the M50x seems to have too much bass to work as a good do it all set of headphones for producing and mixing.
Of all the ath headphones i tried out the m20x were by far my favorite. The M40x sounded pretty good except for the top end was too bright. For around 100 bucks my favorite were Yamaha MT5.
I've heard these three headphones, but I recommend the Sivga SV006 (or BossHifi B8) with Brainwavz pads (standard, oval, protein leather) installed. Without question, they are the best-sounding, lower-cost, closed-back headphone on the market. With Brainwavz pads installed, their sound-stage, imaging, and overall frequency response (slightly boost bass and treble) will astound for critical listening and mixing, alike.
the dt770 pro is what i'm aiming for. i also bring up a audio track in my editing program to be able to hear any unwanted noises in the track that i can go back to remove.
I have the DT770 (pretty good), DT880 (sounds very hifi-ish, not so good for mxing), HD800 (lean, thin sounding, but detailed), , Focal Spirit Pro (pretty flat with softer highs, but stereo image is not accurate and very very uncomfortable) and let me tell you the flattest, with best translation and good amount of detail is the DT250! Don't let the 'lower number'' fool you they are much better than the DT770! And I prefer them even over my HD800, very underrated...you should try them out sean!
The Yamaha HPH-MT8 headphones are $US 199, and are fantastic. Extremely flat, not hyped, great build quality, comfortable. They are closed, but still sound great, with a reasonable sound-stage. Designed by Yamaha specifically for mixing and tracking. I checked out a lot of different headphones and finally bought a pair - very glad I did. I used to use only open back headphones, because of the sound quality, but now need to use closed most of the time.
If I'm using headphones it's the HD 598. Only pair at this price range that I can wear ~8 hours a day without a headache and at this point I kinda know it's sound.

I don't have headphone amp. should I buy the amp? and which type of ohm headphone should I choose? Second question is ... Hey i just saw your video, awesome content and I decided to go for the DT 770 but I have some questions and I hope you can help me out. 1. Whats the difference between the 32, 80 and 250 Ohm? I don't understand how Ohm works but I've heard in other videos that I should get a preamp in order to listen through 80 and 250 Ohm. 2.I'll also buy a Focusrite Scarlet 6i6 and according to tech specs, the impedance of the headphone output is only 10 so what that means is that I won't be able to connect even the 32 ohm version to my interface? I'm really confused.

Hi Steve, I agree that open back will give you a more accurate reference, especially with low end and sound stage. I personally mix with closed back since I'm recording with them also and can't have the bleed happening.
ATH-M50 are very pleasant to listen to. Again, I do like to reference with them for a more "consumer" type headphones. In terms of mixing though, the 770's translate so much better in my experience!

I own the KRK 5's but my room is not treated at all and since I live on a boat, treatment is pretty much impossible. I also have a pair of the ATH m50x headphones which I enjoy producing with, however, I am considering getting a pair that would be used entirely for mixing/mastering purposes. So far I've looked into the Beyer DT 770 Pro, DT 990 Pro, AKG k702 and AKG k712. Out of these four pairs which do you think would suit my needs best? Cheers!
Is it unimportant if mixing headphones are open or closed back? I thought closed back headphones are more for vocal recording and open ones are primarily for mixing?
it's personal preference, both can work well for mixing although closed back are better for isolation. I'm just now checking out some open back headphones and will be sharing content to touch more on this subject...
Hi, I'm looking to buy Sennheiser headphones for sound editing, mainly because Sennheiser has been my favourite brand for years. I have never owned a pair specifically for sound editing though. I've done my research, and apparently the Sennheiser HD 280 pro is highly recommended and a standard for a lot of professionals. It is also around the price I'm looking for; around 150 euros. The thing is, I don't know how recent a lot of the websites are and if Sennheiser possibly has newer, improved models around the same price? I'm hoping you can give me a little more information about this. Thanks in advance.
I really like the Sennheiser HD 280 pro, I've been using them for many years now for cleaning up sounds and for getting my mid range and overall "headphone mixes" right... in tandem with my monitors. I actually like the HD 280 pro better than the HD 380 Pro - even though the HD 380 are much higher in price. When comparing them, I found the HD 280's had a tighter sound in the low end and overall sounded more detailed than the HD 380s.. to my ears.
EvilYakuza The HD280'S are tracking headphones, not made for mixing. Mixes will be over bassy. I have used them for many years. You can certainly use them for editing. Great isolation and they play very flat and loud with no breakup. But if you are looking for detail the KRK KNS 8400 is a better deal and you can mix with them. ($150 CAN DOL )
Hello Sean. I've noticed you have a pair of yamaha ns 10 back there. I always wondered how do they sound? Would you recommend them? And what amplifier are you using for them? Sorry for a lot of questions lol :D
Honestly they don't sound all that great! The NS10m are just a studio staple and I got used to mixing on them in a commercial mixing room a few years ago. They do a good job of presenting the mids and vocals in a way that translates well. Other than that, there are much better options out there if you haven't already become accustomed to them. I'm using a hafler transnova amplifier.
@@SeanDivine Hi Sean, would you mind expanding a bit on this? I own Yamaha H80M's in a room mostly covered in moving blankets. The monitoring doesn't translate well at all. What other monitors would you recommend for this situation?
Dammit! I wish I saw this sooner, I was torn between the 770's and Sennheiser HD 280's and I ended up picking up the 280' this past Saturday, now I'm starting to wonder if I made the best choice lol
Very nice video, detailed and on point. Would you recommend the DT 990 pro over the 770? I’m fairly newb to the headphone market but I’ve heard open back is better for mixing than closed back. I mainly work with extreme metal genres.
I haven't tried the 990 but in my experience, the 770 seem to translate better than the others here. Open back will give you better low end response and sound stage but you can compensate in a closed back once you get used to them
Great video thanks for the info I got 3? 1st is can you hear the effects of the ath m50x like the dt770pros like you were explaing? 2nd I make hip hop beatz so 808s and subs is a must which headphones would be better? and 3rd does the ohms make a difference I have a focusrite scarlett 2i2 I know it's not enough amp built in but what ohms would be best if I went with the dt770?
thanks for the input Ron! I haven't tried the HD650 but have heard great things about them, as well as the HD600. They are a bit pricey though for most. Are you using a dedicated headphone amp w/ with the 650?
Ashani Whitfield check out the phase scope plugin with metering set to rms. Otherwise there's not really a dedicated rms meter in pro tools to my knowledge
Musikality I have. Great tracking headphones. Up to 30 db of isolation. But not made for mixing. And I have done many mixes on them. Too bassy. And the midrange will be all off. The KRK KNS 8400 is better. ($150)
Sean Divine no problem. Yeah, the Sennheiser range seems to be very popular, especially the HD25s. Thanks for responding, much appreciated, I've been following you for a while now, your videos are great! Keep up the good work man!
Hey Michael. You should see the metronome icon in the upper right tool bar. Just deselect it. If you don't see it, right click and select customize control bar and make sure Click is checked.
just bought a pair of sony mdr 7506 but am now thinking i maybe should've gotten an open-backed pair, specifically the Beyerdynamic. is one better than the other for mixing? that's what i'll be using it for mostly
the beyerdynamic are more of a "complete" mixing headphone IMO (i.e. the DT770 or DT990)... not to say you can't mix with the 7506... they're great at picking out details in the top end but are a bit harsh and lacking in the lows
hi there, I'm searching for headsets for my son as a Christmas gift. he produces, sings, mixes etc. based k that what woild be your suggestions? He did tell me he prefers closed back. Anything under 300 would be considered 😊forgot to mention, I was reading on the audio technica 50x. Ty
Hi there care to advise? I bought the 250 ohms Beyerdynamic and unfortunately my Focusrite Saffire struggles to power them. And although they are audible I am not sure if they are meant to be used this way. What do you advise. Should I continue using them with the Focusrite, and is there any danger of damage (to the hardware or my ears) if do. Or should I just get a new pair. Or is headphone amp the way to go. Thanks!
it won't damage your interface, it's simply a matter of getting the highest quality sound and response from the phones... I would consider an interface upgrade that has a better headphone output (i.e. RME / SSL / UA)
Thanks for the reply. Don’t want to spend on a new interface just yet. Till then the Audio Technica you mentioned here would do? Or is there anything else in the budget space that you’d recommend that’s compatible with the lower output of the Scarlett.

Thanks for this video, it helped me to understand a few things about what headphones should I go for mixing!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!
no problem :)
@@SeanDivine Hi Sean, would you mind expanding a bit on this? I own Yamaha H80M's in a room mostly covered in moving blankets. The monitoring doesn't translate well at all. What other monitors would you recommend for this situation?
The Sony and AT headphones are for monitoring not mixing. For that, you'd want open back headphones
question for the dt 770...did you take the 250 ohms version
francis hunter mine are 80 ohm I believe
thanks for the response ... great channel..keep it up
@@francishunter5168 for mix and mastering -----> 250 ohm (more flat response)
Dammit! I wish I saw this sooner, I was torn between the 770's and Sennheiser HD 280's and I ended up picking up the 280' this past Saturday, now I'm starting to wonder if I made the best choice lol
@RAP INSTRUMENTALS ON MY PAGE how do you record with no headphones?
between KRK kns8400 & beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 ohm Studio Headphones??? thanks Sean!
yo sean in the DT 770 what ohms do u use 80 or 250???
N/N 250 for mixing
80 ohm = ipod/fun 250 ohm = soundcard/studio/mix
Do you have a recommendation for wireless headphones? I end up mixing for events with an ipad, and walking around the buildings we work in.
Hi Kelly, I don't have any experience with wireless headphones (yet). Will keep you posted if that changes!
Open back will give you better low end response and sound stage but you can compensate in a closed back once you get used to them
Do we need a headphone amp with Focusrite 2i2 with the 250 Ohms version of the DT 770 ?
I'm using the 80 ohm. Not to say it's necessary, ideally the 250 need more power to reach their potential.
@@SeanDivine you prefered ath m50x or DT 770?
What about Beyerdynamic Custom one pro?
Is listening to music in DT770s not-enjoyable??????? I do wanna mix but i dont wanna be in pain using them!
I think it's enjoyable... it's not overly hyped but also it's not completely flat either :)
@@SeanDivine Thank u for answering!
@@SeanDivine Do u know if i can use the 250 ohm version with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2?
I’m about to order the DT770’s for studio headphones. What OHMs should I get? There’s 16,32,80, and 250.
I use 80 :)
770. That is what i use.
What do you think about Avantone PRO MP1 MixPhones? Planning to get these, would be cool to hear your opinion on them.
hi German, don't have experience with these but have heard good things about Avantone!
is ath m40x good for mixing?
i tried them. They are very good, but not perfect .....
I have that same controller!! Impact LX 49+ !!!
🙌
Now what...there wasn't only 2 made was there?
Hi Sean. What version of DT 770 pro did you recommend for rode al-1 interface for mixing and mastering?
Sean what do you think about the Senh. HD 650 hphones for mixing?
i really like the 650s but my krk 8 are my favorite way. just wanted to comment. thanks
thanks for the input Ron! I haven't tried the HD650 but have heard great things about them, as well as the HD600. They are a bit pricey though for most. Are you using a dedicated headphone amp w/ with the 650?
Hi Sean, Thanks for your response, not really, I use a behringer 1 x 4 but it is far from special.
I just have a behringer 1 x 4 HP amp
could you do a video on RMS levels and the best plugin to use to buy or what comes with your saw, having problems on that topic, thanks
Ashani Whitfield which daw are you using?
Sean Divine pro tools 12
Ashani Whitfield check out the phase scope plugin with metering set to rms. Otherwise there's not really a dedicated rms meter in pro tools to my knowledge
This video has info on rms that may help you ruclips.net/video/XhcUk4t8AGo/видео.html
Sean Divine OK thanks, and remember that video about the budget studio
Thanks for this!
sure thing!
What about Senheiser HD 280 Pro? Have you used those before? Thanks.
Musikality I have. Great tracking headphones. Up to 30 db of isolation. But not made for mixing. And I have done many mixes on them. Too bassy. And the midrange will be all off. The KRK KNS 8400 is better. ($150)
For mixing better is 770 or 990 ? I dont talk about open/close i want make a good mixes.
I haven't tried the 990 but being that they're open back, you'll have better low end response / sound stage
Hi Sean. Great video. I wondered if you had an opinion or experience of Sennheiser headphones? Specifically the HD380s? Thank you.
I have not :/ might test them in the future and will keep you posted!
Sean Divine no problem. Yeah, the Sennheiser range seems to be very popular, especially the HD25s. Thanks for responding, much appreciated, I've been following you for a while now, your videos are great! Keep up the good work man!
I enjoyed watching this.
:)
AKG K553 pro is so perfect for the price and "mixing" sound quality.Check out a review on them. And the price has dropped to like $160
Hey sean, I bought your template and I was just wondering how to disable the click track in.logic pro x
Hey Michael. You should see the metronome icon in the upper right tool bar. Just deselect it. If you don't see it, right click and select customize control bar and make sure Click is checked.
real good video thank you man
Glad it helped
just bought a pair of sony mdr 7506 but am now thinking i maybe should've gotten an open-backed pair, specifically the Beyerdynamic. is one better than the other for mixing? that's what i'll be using it for mostly
the beyerdynamic are more of a "complete" mixing headphone IMO (i.e. the DT770 or DT990)... not to say you can't mix with the 7506... they're great at picking out details in the top end but are a bit harsh and lacking in the lows
The 770s come in 3 different ohms. How do you know which one you should choose?
I have the 80 ohm
@@SeanDivine Thank you very much and have a wonderful Christmas!
I have a AKG K-77, laugh on me but he is amazing! Flat, not bassy, and super cheap
hey, whatever works and translates best for you man :)
Great video by the way! I'm just giving a tip for your subscribers. I love your channel, I learned a lot here! Peace, bro!
appreciate the suggestion bro!
hi there, I'm searching for headsets for my son as a Christmas gift. he produces, sings, mixes etc. based k that what woild be your suggestions? He did tell me he prefers closed back. Anything under 300 would be considered 😊forgot to mention, I was reading on the audio technica 50x. Ty
Hi Annie, I would recommend the beyerdynamic dt770 or the audio technica m50x. I have links in the description :)
Sean Divine ty very much for replying and suggestions! I kinda of decided to go for the 770 pro 80 ohms 👍
Sean Divine I know the link is different but I saw them in gearnuts. I think that site is safe
@@SeanDivine Yeah. Thanks for the reply.
Thanks for the reply. Don’t want to spend on a new interface just yet. Till then the Audio Technica you mentioned here would do? Or is there anything else in the budget space that you’d recommend that’s compatible with the lower output of the Scarlett.
Dt770 (80ohm) or even the senn hd25 will work well
@@SeanDivine Got it thanks
Do I need a amp? Looking to upgrade to better headphones to use on my laptop while mixing
I'd recommend a good audio interface with solid headphone outs
Eternal rewind2 Exactly what Sean Divine says above.
With the dt770's would you get the 80ohm or the 250ohm?
80
at the dt 770 there is any diffrence about the ohm versions?
