- My favorite scene from this classic movie. I have always loved the music that started to play when Neal (Steve Martin) was on the train thinking about his family and Del (John Candy). He soon realizes that Del is homeless. R.I.P. John Candy.
Hits you like a ton of bricks when you realize Candy's character did all this just because he's lonely.
Yes. Watching this movie a second time, and as an adult, I see this in everything Candy's character does in the film. He is so good in this, and it is so sad.
😢😢😢
I don't care what anyone says. This is John Candy and Steve Martin's best performances out of their entire career.
This scene is amazing.
The part from Candy looks up when Martin comes in is so perfectly done. Candy acts like a kid, who's been caught doing something wrong that he was trying to hide. And the way Martin approaches him, like a parent who has caught that child, but isn't angry. Like he's trying to get to the bottom of it by not accepting anything but the truth, while being caring in how he does it.
(Notice how he's standing while Candy sits, with his hands clasped in front of him - like a child)
And the realization that hits Martin's face: not just confirming his suspicion about Marie, but how that explains so much of Del's character and behavior. You can see Martin re-evaluating everything about what has transpired over the last three days in the 15 seconds after Del tells him Marie has been dead for 8 years.
Just amazing. An all-time great scene
My favorite Holiday movie
..plane trains and automobiles back in theaters this sunday and monday ! for the 35th anniversary
@@jameswilliams-zr8co saw it for the first time all the way through. This scene hit me hard. In a good way.
It's their favorite movie of their own work.
The funniest and saddest film ever. Perfect writing
It does take you from shedding tear of laughter to tears of sadness. doesn't it?
Yes. It makes me laugh, but makes me so sad “I like me, my wife likes me”
Thank the genius of John Hughes.
John Candy was one of those actors with the amazing ability to have you laughing one moment and crying the next.
This scene always got to me. Then- almost 4 years ago, now- my own wife died, a few weeks after Christmas. When I hear people griping and whining about what a pain the holidays are, esp. because of family, etc. I want to punch them. Appreciate the loved ones in your life, people. Trust me, you would miss them like hell if they weren't there.
This made me cry reading it, my heart goes out to you and your late wife. I will be cherishing my family harder this holiday
@@ABandApart01 Thank you for your kind response. I am doing fairly well lately, and I am happy for you and your family. Stay safe and healthy and don't let the "Debbie Downers" of the world drag your spirits down.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this comment. God bless your sir.
I’m so sorry for ur loss man, my gf well soon to be fiancé I’m waiting till Covid is over to give her the ring is my whole life I have loved before but she was someone j loved back in hs in ‘06 and when people ask me if I love her I quote the movie j say “love is not a big enough word for how I feel about her.” Right now we’re struggling to find a place for her kids and I and she loses her mind feeling it won’t happen but I work hard saving make sure it did but even if we didn’t her love and her kids love is the only thing I really care to live for they make me better then I deserve to be
@@HorrorGod920 You know a love is real when it makes you want to be a better human being. Love and prayers to you, your fiance', and the kids.
Don't be sad that he's gone. Be happy he was here to entertain us for a little while. It's what John Candy would've wanted from us.
Damn dude, that made me cry. You're right, we all should. God Bless that wonderful man.
People wept John died here in Canada too young he was a huge part of my childhood in the 80s. My late dad was a huge fan I was just as bummed When Robin Williams died. Also this is John Hughes masterpiece his teen movies were good but this is beyond good,
John Hughes was the perfect director to do these movies.
Not to mention your pizza 😂🍕
@@craigusselman546 he was Huge alright
This was one of the most heartwarming and heartbreaking moments. Candys character was so cheerfully willing to help people, masking desperate loneliness.
Yes, that is sweet
Just like Robin Williams, in real life.
DELL GRIFFITH!!!
@@boudusaved4719RIP ROBIN WILLIAMS AND JOHN CANDY AND JOHN BELUSHI!!
I’m still a million dollars shy of being a millionaire
This scene kills me. There are so many minute things that John Candy did to convey the emotions.
The nervous twitching & placement of his hands 3:24 , you can hear how choked up he is when speaking to Neil. The puffiness around his eyes.
All these intricacies allude to him, probably being broken down before Neil showed up. He seems embarrassed & ashamed that he’s been caught in this state, so far removed from what we saw throughout most of the film.
Truly a masterclass in character.
God Bless DELL GRIFFITH And JOHN CANDY!
John Candy was a brilliant actor --- so many subtle emotional clues in his facial expressions
I wish that they would give John Candy an award posthumously. Them man was one of a kind.
👍🇦🇺
Agreed
Yep for sure, if we ever needed John, it’s right now. What a wonderful talented funny human being 😢
Cry my eyes out this scene. So touching.
Yes it is.
Me too
He's glad to be rid of him, but then realizes Del doesn't have anyone. Hits him in the heart. It should hit us all in the heart.
How Steve Martin, John Candy or John Hughes didn’t win an Oscar for this movie is beyond me.
Apparently in 1987 people who were members of the Academy thought it was more entertaining to watch paint dry in viewing the 12 hours (or what seemed like 12 hours) of The Last Emperor.
😴😴😴
This is Hughes best film by far
@@kerzytibok3211
For sure. And filmed in my own backyard here in western New York.

“You’re going the wrong way”!!, when the car catches on fire, and when they’re riding in the back of the dairy truck.
3:18… how Steve Martin confronts him… and how it crushes him to finally hear the truth. This scene is so powerful… RIP John Candy, he truly pulled off a powerful, wicked performance
So sad when Del says he doesn’t have a home and his wife died 8 years ago. Breaks your heart but at least he has a new best friend to celebrate thanksgiving with.
and with his family
This was such a twist the first time I saw this. To go from such a goofball comedy to this was just so unexpected and really hit you in the face. It's one of the reasons this movie is one of my all time favorites.
This one of those films that just doesn't get old , you'll laugh and cry . It's an absolute gem
The line from John Candy at the end is the haymaker here, but I also love Steve Martin's pointed "What are you DOING here?" If he had come in all puzzled and confused, Del might have tried to talk it away like everything was okay. "Oh, just resting my feet a little before heading home! But don't worry about me, I'm fine." That kind of thing.
But because Neal pushes and is so direct with the question, Del opens up at last and comes clean. Great complimentary acting.
This incredible underrated classic was released 35 years ago. Thank you Steve Martin. Thank you John Candy. Thank you John Hughes.
3 people making history
“At the very least the absolute minimum you’ve had a woman you love to grow old with” The look on JC’s face when he says that..
My wife and I have seen the film several times. The scenes with John Candy are heartbreaking.
The music on the train at the end with Steve Martin is awesome.
One correction: "You've GOT a woman you love to grow old with" in the present tense. That's why he makes the face that he does because he wants to tell Neal she's dead, but restrains himself.
Heart wrenching
i haven't been home in years ... breaks me down every time . RIP John Candy respect x
+Tir Chonaill Tiger I still miss him.
He was only 43 years old when he died, maybe I’ll see him in Heaven !
Let's hope!
I really miss John Candy. One of the saddest days of my life was March 4, 1994.
He was amazing and sweet to us on the movies. What a lost.
for me this film really captures what it feels like to be bereaved and loose your spouse, putting on a brave face when your heart is forever broken and others have no idea of your pain while enjoying their special holidays... the fact he talks about his wife in the present tense, the photo frame of his wife he carries with him and how he still talks to her when he is troubled...summed up exactly what I do and how I feel being widowed...this film makes me laugh and cry on so many levels .
This is what I love about the internet, it brings people together that are moved by beautiful things.
I always thought this scene and movie in general is symbolic of how men have trouble processing feelings and emotions. Especially with and to one another. So beautifully written and acted out. The ultimate buddy film and yes this scene truly sneaks up on you emotionally.
Most underrated movie that John Hughes ever made, no contest. Why absolutely no one makes movies like this anymore I will not ever understand. Makes me want to direct them myself.
This movie should have won an Oscar(s). It pulls out so many emotions, and IMO that is what makes for excellent entertainment. John Candy was incredibly talented. It's rare to find an actor that can be funny and serious equally well.
Agreed re. the Oscars. Apparently though, in 1987 members of the Academy were more entertained watching paint dry in viewing the 12 hours (or what seemed like 12 hours) of The Last Emperor. 😴 😴😴
Cant waiting to watch this movie for thanksgiving we watch it every year. Its a tradition. .like the Griswold christmas vacation movie also.
Paul Tech me too!
..2018 thanksgiving
My family has watched this movie every thanksgiving for a long time as well! Definitely tradition as much Christmas vacation!
How many years later and this still brings me to tears
Lovely acting by Steve Martin on the train by facial expression only. First relief to finally be alone, then happiness thinking of his family, then humour remembering the crazy events with Del, then uncertainty thinking back on some things Del said, finally resolve to go back and confirm his suspicions. Beautifully done.
"I don't have a home" gets me all the time 😢
One of my all time favourite films! Brilliant acting and a great script! Shame they don't make them like this anymore!
Laughed all the way through the film then cried at the end. Genius writing and acting
This was such a powerful and emotional scene. Superbly acted and directed. And perfectly accompanied by Dream Academy power to believe. If this doesn't bring a tear to your eye... maybe you should question if you are even human. A true gentleman that will always be missed.
Absolutely 🇦🇺
So many people can relate to this vibe... I've loved this movie since I was a kid, and the song goes perfect for this part
One of my favorite movies of all-time! Classic John Candy and Steve Martin. These two actors deserve Academy awards for this movie.
Definitely
Agreed re. the Academy Awards.
Evidently, though, in 1987, members of the Academy found it far more entertaining to watch paint dry in viewing the 9 hours (or what seemed like 9 hours) of The Last Emperor.
😴😴😴
This is like me... I've not seen my family for 20 years... I went through domestic violence and lost my mum when she was only 47 years old... I go about every day with a smile on my face because my mum was kind and she always hid her pain behind a smile so that people wouldn't have to feel her pain.
Guess what....It is Thanksgiving 2023 and we need this more than ever....
How much did these guys, in this scene, affect every family holiday get together in the past 30 years. Classic. Count your blessings people.
John Candy helped me through my miserable childhood. Thanks, you big huggy-baer
The best thanksgiving movie of all time not just for the laughs, but the punch in the gut it gives you emotionally. I tear up everytime I watch this scene.
John Hughes was the most important movie maker for my growing up in the 80s. Teen movies when I was a teen and treasures like this - now a holiday staple
It’s almost like John Candy was serious. :( I always felt so pained when I saw him sad. RIP big guy
As a teen myself, I love this song! For some reason, us teens are throwing everyone back to the 80s and 90s with music and old time board game stuff! Ha! Love this movie! Watch it very Thanksgiving! Never gets old.
you can meet people like this and share these experiences all the time if you allow it, life's full of adventures
candy was such a presence, wasn't he
This was an excellent film.
I'm a hard man. And i have remained like stone in the face of life's most withering storms. But this piece of play acting. Not actually even real. Leaves me like like an animal, a helpless child. Full of tears and prayers to a, I dont even know what.
The depth in this comment. The right music, the right vibration can penetrate one's stone. You, feel. That is a miracle.
I am an old man and i watched it 100 times but i get every times the tears in my eyes when i watch this
My favorite movie…. Two great actors a time that can never be repeated…..
One of the best scenes in a 80s film. Does so much with so little. This scene is what comedies today are missing. Candy, Martin And Hughes deserved Oscar nominations RIP Candy And Hughes.
this scene made me go out and buy the soundtrack !!
Terrific acting & script writing one of the best scenes in any movie EVER.
John Candy's early passing was a huge loss to this world. There is so much more he could have and would have done for sure.
I know it's the directing and the story that projects a certain persona onto this actor, but seriously, we've seen him in a number of roles. It's clear the inner true character shines right though!
Still makes me tear up when watching this film.. Nice, so many others on here feel it to
A very toutching scene love this movie Martin and Candy are wonderful I always get a tesr in the eye
john candy needed more awards than he got he was an XCELLENT actor we miss u john candy
I did watch this movie when I was a child a this is the most favorite part . This is American dream help to other persons.
This scene is literally, unforgettable.
I’ve seen many great films and comedies over the years but Planes, Trains, & Automobiles always stuck with me. It’s a beautifully simple story that captures the true essence of friendship and family. John Candy’s character is so incredibly endearing and well meaning that when he drops the news about his wife being dead my heart just sank. And Steve Martin’s character arc is amazing, it’s so easy to be bitter and uncaring of others when you don’t get what you want but friendship is something we must all hold into because that and family is gets us through tough times. Incredible film
One of the most heartwarming moments of any film
One of the most moving and unexpectedly poignant scenes in any movie - from comedy to tragedy in a couple of minutes, totally brilliant.
The show Mr Robot had an amazing homage to this film. In the episode 404 Not Found in the 4th season, Darlene picks up a guy she thinks is down on his luck, very much like Del and she opens up to him about her problems and this song plays. It's one of the best homages ever for fans of this film
The song made this scene memorable. Even as a child when this came out, I knew how important and good this scene was. I still believe this is one of the best ever made.
I watched many 80s classics when growing up in the 90s, yet this scene looks so gloomy and depressing not only for the heartbreaking ending and plot twist with Candy being homelesss and broken. The loniliness the score inside the train evokes, paired with the grayness and coldness of the train and Chicago winter, very atmospheric. I live in Europe, and have been to the US once, and I felt similar feeling inside the train crossing 59th Street bridge into Queensboro Plaza.
This last scene always brings tears to my eyes, no matter how many times I watch it.
Very touching... Neal is a good person.
This movie is masterpiece! And that era 80-s 90-s was the best movies era! Movie fan from Poland
We all miss him. Just look at his face when hi hugs Steve. He was funny, kind, and REAL
Homeless right now sitting in my car watching this … 3:23am
😢I pray that God will bless you and end your homelessness.
This changes the entire tone of the movie, for the better.
One of the greatest movies..... ever.
These scene kicks you in the stomach and pulls the rug from under you at the same time.
When movies would make you smile, laugh, and wake up a little of the soul in us.
Indeed.
Yes
Literally this
All I can say is thank you john candy and Steve Martin ❤❤❤❤❤ you will be in my heart forever
That’s such an honest moment where he sits there and reflects on his trip. The whole time he is hating it and not until he’s able to sit down and let the entire thing process, he can’t help
But to laugh and almost becomes nostalgic about it. Had the same thing happen with my last job. I spent the last few years “hating it “ and pursuing new jobs and now that I am out of it, I can’t help but to think back often and laugh at some of the ridiculous moments me and my co workers went through ( working retail through Covid ). And in the end, it wasn’t really that bad. I was just living life in the moment with 50 other people I won’t ever have the same experience with again.
Still makes me cry every time I see this scene One of the best performances by John Candy excuse me the late John Candy And Great performance by Steve Martin
One of the most heart breaking scenes in movie history and I’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of movies.
This really is a gut wrencher
It's extremely touching because everybody can relate with the scene, remembering good times with love ones and this music are so emotional.
I remember when I was down on my luck 38 years ago after I left the service, after Desert Storm. Almost homeless, Christmas Eve of 1994...with 2.50 in my pocket. Dollar twenty five for a roundtrip light rail fare to downtown Sacramento to attend midnight Christmas Eve Mass. Gave the remaining 1.25 to a homeless person...far more needier than I. Been blessed since and now retired.
Best way to end a great movie. Love it.
Yes agree. Genuine heart ❤️
First time watching, instantly cried.
plane trains and automobiles back in theaters this sunday and monday ! for the 35th anniversary
When he says I don't have a home it does the same to me.
I know it is coming. I prepare myself.
Nope, tears.
Must be 50 times now...
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
Besides hearing this bad news, I think it finally dawns on Neil Page that Del was the most benevolent character for attempting to get him home, despite not having his own anymore.
What a sensational track for a sensational moment.

Gone to soon thank you for your talent ❤❤❤
John Candy was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tears, everytime..... I so love this movie.
I love this movie and by far my favorite of all John Candy and Steve Martin movies. My best friend since High School was just like John Candy in many ways. Especially in this movie. He died this month last year at 70. Not a day goes by I don't think of him and wish he was here. This song always makes me think of this movie and the good and bad we had in life and how our friendship made it easier.
My eyes are leaking loved John and Steve was fantastic too.
This makes me miss John Candy all the movies he would have added so much too
The look of a man that could not stand the other, only to realize that the other man was trying to help him even though he had nothing to offer but Mear guidedance and friendship...
This part always makes my eyes waterv😢❤
Miss John Candy
Thank you, John Hughes for this film and all your other brilliant works that touched our deepest inner being.
