- I have done a lot of videos showing different scenarios using Active Track with the Mavic Air 2. I use Active Track in a lot in my videos. I want to show you my results and what you can expect from the drone. I have used the drone in the park hiking, riding my mountain bike, swimming at the beach, and driving my car through parks and deserts. The MA2 has had several firmware updates since it was released, and I have shown those as well.
This video was probably the first one I should have done. It goes over each of the different tracking modes and the limitations of each. I have received a lot of questions about active track over the months. I appreciate all of the views, questions, and comments. Please feel free to ask any questions or concerns in the comment section below.

I’m a newbie droner. I just purchased a 3 or 4 year old Mavic air 2 from a friend. Came with 3 batteries, extra blades, bag, 64gb card for $275. I’m really starting to love playing with this thing but there is so much to learn.
Your vids have really helped and been very informative, thank you for the work you have put in. Thank you
Thanks for going over the different modes and tracking! Good to know how the sensors work in different modes. 👍🏻
Thanks for the video 👍👍
Hey Danny, I am a recent subscriber and I have to say that I absolutely love your channel. I am going to be getting my first drone (Air 2) in a month or so and your videos have been invaluable in my decision making. You have a very pleasant way about you. I really enjoy your style/delivery. I hope that you are able to gain more and more subscribers and continue to put out the great work. Thank you!!
I really appreciate that. I'm glad I was able to help. Thanks for the sub.
Glad we found your channel! Great help in helping us to learn the Mavic 2!
Keep up the great work! Outstanding job explaining the active track.
Excellent review of various tracking features. Thank you!
Another great tutorial, Thank you, Chris from Australia
Excellent video. Thanks for all the information. I can see your channel growing very quickly. You deserve the subs! Cheers from Downunder! 🙂
Thank you for this. This is a great help :)
Awesome video and thank you !!
The DJI Mavic Air 2 is sick. I need to get one of these.
excellent video
Great vids...thx for all of the info...
Love this explanation. Thank you!!!
Great explanation...Thanks!
thanks for ur vid. Great info. will watch your others
brilliant
Just got my air 2 yesterday! Things a dream compared to the wal mart toys I have tried to fly lol. Your videos have helped me. Thanks 🤙🏼
Thank you. You have helped me so I subscribed
thank you sir, informative video tutorial
I try to do the thing you did hope all sensors will work. Thank for sharing brother
Thank you for explaining the active tracking fly safe
Appreciate the content brother
Love the video, just got an Air 2 and I’m still learning about it (1.5 hrs flight time and my first drone ever).
This video gives me more confidence in the avoidance feature, I’ve left it on brake so far, thanks!!!
Thanks for the explanation about the Mavic Air 2. I was thinking what kind of drone I would like to buy. Now I know 😃👍🏼
Thanks new to channel and watched the ads to help you out. Great informative video can't wait to see the others..lol
great video, nice explanation, great to see you using graphics onscreen
Thank you for this man. . I was trying to figure out the orbit mode from active track trace from the mavic2pro and I thought they discontinued the feature, good to know that they put it under POI. very helpful brother . cheers!
Way to rep South Bend, IN!!
Good video, thank you. I just subscribed.
Awesome video and info! just got my air 2 a couple of days ago didn’t know it was capable of all these different ways to track. I know I’m a year late lol but thank you for the information.
It is a great drone. For only $800, it is very capable. Be sure to check out the whole playlist.
@@uosocal going through them right now 👍 , I got the fly more combo from adorama for 707 shipped in excellent condition with a 1 year warranty service from them not bad, I can tell previous owner smoked by the bag lol but it’s all good!
That's a great price. Have fun, and stay away from trees with no leaves.
Thanks for explaining, now I understand why it cannot keep up with me on my bike going downhill in active track mode ;)
It gets frustrating sometimes.
Great video, very clear information👍
Any chance you can do a video about looking at the flight data & learning from previous flights?
I thought the DJI assistant would do it but it doesn’t seem to do much & the other products all seem to want you to upload and or pay for something that should be built within the product.
Keep up the good work.
Good info. My drone crashed into the top of my house. I checked and avoidance was on and set to go around stuff. Luckily it just ruined the blades and scraped up the top of the battery. Partly my fault, I thought it was high enough, but still I think it should have avoided it.
That's strange. Maybe wind pushed it.
Greatings from Brazil. Thanks, Amazing Information! I m using an mavic air 2 to film with a mountain bike. Your channel is a very good reference to learn more about it! im note sure if you already did, but can you please tell more on how you use the controller when you ride? Its inside you bag?
I go over that in my most recent AT video. There's a couple of different options. Thanks
Nice one thanks, really good explanation of how the different tracking options work, big help. I will be using it to track my boat in Majorca next week, how do I stop the glare from the boat, its white so looks too bright on film?
Camera angle and white balance.
Love your videos . But my experience with Cine (tripod) mode is it reached up to 10 mph, although today it went up to 12mph. I really miss the old 2.5 mph top speed for tripod..
Thanks. Maybe the wind was pushing it.
Hello sir, this active track use, how does the obstacle avoidance dare when comes to power lines, will it be able to detect and go over or it won't even see it cos it's not a big enough obstacle to detect?
I don't think it will see power lines. I have luckily flown right through a couple of times. I didn't hear any detection beeps from the controller.
@@uosocal thanks for sharing that experience! Guess I'll just have to fly it higher and zoom in.
Thanks for the vid. explanation is huge. have you taken this in more congested area when riding your bike? Not sure if it can keep up in heavily wooded trails.
It won't keep up flying under many trees. It will follow pretty well at a walking pace, but not much quicker. Check out my MA2 video in the park.
Very good, very clear. My issue is the drone, either in trace or parallel, loses the target. Speed is about 10mph, shot in normal and there are no obstacles
It's hard to say what the problem could be without seeing the whole scenario and setup. Some days the drones just want to be difficult.
@@uosocal I have reached out to DJI and sent video of the situation. All firmware is up to date, was in parallel which flies faster and was going 8mph on a wide motorcycle in the AZ desert. I am debating selling this drone and getting the 2S if DJI can’t help. Thank you for responding btw. Your vids are very helpful, real and concise! Thanks!
Thanks for the video. So does the person that I want to react have to have the controller with them?? Is it tracking the controller or the object? Thx
So, for Mountain Bike the Best settings ser active track and SPORT mode? .
Nice video greetings from Chile!
It depends on the situation. I would only use sport mode if there is nothing for the drone to avoid. Normal Mode: obstacle avoidance sensors on. Sport Mode: obstacle avoidance sensors off.
It seems TRACE along with SPORT modes are good for following a boat where there are no obstacles
That would be my preferred shot combo. Just keep an eye out for birds.
Very informative thanks!
What do you use for editing?
Premiere Pro
Hi, that's great video on tracking.
i have tried by zooming in 1080p and 4 times zoom but it does not lock on to target.
it says target too far.
do u know at what height i can track the vehicle in zoom mode without crashing into building s.
thanks
Great tutorial as I'm about to get going on taking some footage of MTB... How do you autonomously have the drone ahead of you as ActiveTrack either trails the object or is parallel to it?
Thanks. The only DJI drone that will stay in front of you is the Mavic 3. The MA2 and Mini 3 Pro will only track from sides or back.
@@uosocal Thanks for the quick turnaround. This may come with a future firmware update but maybe this requires extra sensors. Of course I could always use the spotlight mode but that means I need to get a loooot better with flying 😎
Have you had other ideas on carrying the controller and phone on mountain bikes, road bikes, motorcycle? Trying to figure out the best options for that. I watched your other videos about it. good stuff
I’ve done a quick release mount for my dirt bike. You need to take hold of it in case something goes wrong.(see my other comments). Trouble is, having the controller and phone mounted the the bars, is it can flap about quite violently over rough ground
ruclips.net/video/fpHcu5jJoYE/видео.html
As you can see, the pace is a bit tame because you have to travel slow enough for the drone to keep up, as it’s in pedestrian mode. It only recognises the person on the bike and not the vehicle. So the only way to get a decent speed up is in sport, with no sensors
It's a great idea for road riding, but mtb trails are too rough.
I'll check it out. Thanks
Love your content, just got my first drone air 2 . I keep hearing that you have to have a license to fly the drone air 2 even as a hobby. Is this true?
As far as I know, you don't need a license. You will have to register your drone with the FAA. It's costs about $10
I bought a mavic Air 2 after watching your video, which you have done a great job with by the way :-) I got it to film myself riding horses and it has done okay in open areas without any trees or bushes, but it is crashing into them quite a bit. I am not using sport mode but this thing seems to be blind to obstacles unless it is flying straight towards them. I often am trying to film from the side and it doesn't have sensors on the sides. Any suggestions?
First, make sure everything is set to auto. Second, are you using Trace or Parallel?
@@uosocal I have everything set on auto and I use both trace and parallel. It does a good job avoiding obstacles when I let it follow directly behind me, but whenever I have it filming me from the side or in front of me it often runs into brush or trees. I'm wondering if there is a way to get it so that it is flying forward but the gimbal would be pointed off to the side to film me so the obstacle sensors could then avoid stuff? I don't know how to get it to do this.
As far as I know, it won't do that. Even my Mavic 3 has a hard time tracking from the front. DJI drones do their best work tracking from the rear. You could try using Spotlight, and have another person fly the drone.
Great Info , Thanks. I've a few questions. While using the Active track , suddenly there was an incoming call, i didn't pick up the call, and the drone totally lost control, and flew back Home, luckily my home point was within my house compound, the drone is safe. The questions--- how to avoid this from happening, if it do happen, how do I get back the control and prevent it from homing. Thank you!
I have received calls while in flight, and the drone was fine. Maybe put your phone into a "do not disturb" mode. I don't think Airplane mode would work.
@@uosocal Thanks
I’d like to know what happens if you are using active track, have no GPS ( in a cave or building for example ) and then the controller disconnects
It would probably just hover. I have flown it inside of a building, without GPS, but I never lost connection to the remote. Could be a dangerous test.
Can you change from normal to tripod mode or vice versa in the middle of filming? Thanks
Yes
I want it to follow me in my RZR in the dunes. I would need active track and sport mode to keep up. Problem is all the elevation changes in the dunes. I understand the sensors are off in sport mode but I wonder how it would do with elevation changes?
It will do well with the elevation changes. The problem will be how fast you go over a dune, and if the drone loses sight of you.
hi, i have a question. When you film yourself on your mountain bike via active track, what do you do with the remote control and the smartphone? Where did you get that?
I have the remote in my backpack. I have a couple of earlier videos where I go over that.
@@uosocal Thank you very much. Somehow I would be afraid that some function would accidentally be activated or see the drone being controlled.
I will watch that Videos!
Merry Christmas!
MTB tracking videos, parts 1 & 2, show a couple of ways I store it and ride.
If it's flying in sport mode (sensors off) following a boat for instance, where I don't worry about obstacles, can I change mid-flight to normal mode (sensors on) for the return flight home on land where there might be obstacles?
You can change mid flight. Your top speed will revert back to Normal Mode speeds.
@@uosocal What happens if you get a call or text on your phone while flying?
Hi , can you please talk about additing your videos 📹?
How i edit and what software i use?
@@uosocal all will be interesting.
What modes did you recomend for mtb.?
I usually stay in Normal mode and use active track trace. Spotlight works well for static shots.
No idea what I am doing wrong but my Air 2 will not follow or track my car.....the camera stays on me till I am out of sight but the drone will not move with me....I only tried this with the drone about 10 feet off the ground or less
When you draw the box around your car, is the car icon appearing at the bottom of the box?
Are you using “target scanning “ in settings?
The only thing I’d add to that is people need to be careful using active track around trees, this time of year. As with no leaves on fine branches, the sensors won’t be as effective. I’ll stay away from trees until they’re back in full leaf.
I’ve just done the update 12th Nov, and it still won’t recognise a motorcycle as a vehicle, quite frustrating 🙄
That is probably the only complaint I have about the drone. They need to do something about the person and vehicle icons.
@@uosocal tracking has improved to the point where it can track for so long that it wants to RTH at 60% battery which can be a pain and is why I’ve had to mount the controller to the bars. Imagine having to fumble around in your back pack looking for the controller to cancel RTH while it beggars off to your starting point at the wrong altitude 😳
I highlighted my dog one day, a terrier stand 12” at the shoulder, and it came up with a dog icon! Why the hell can’t it work on a bike?🤷🏻♂️
I hadn't seen the dog icon.
Looks like your Patreon account only allows monthly subscriptions... is there a way to send a one time payment? The info in this video invaluable. Thanks.
I will get back to you on that. Thanks
Np. I might try the monthly. Your vids deserve something!,,
Thank you. I really appreciate that.
Here goes for that 25% for the kid
I am having a hard time with tracking.
Any part in particular, or the whole thing?
@@uosocal Ithink I got it figured out now.Thank you.
No problem. Let me know if you have any other questions.
