Undulating Trails & New Friends: Faskally Forest parkrun Adventure

  • Our annual Scottish adventure kicked off with a parkrun stop to break the journey. We left home on Friday afternoon and arrived at Faskally Forest in the wee hours of the morning. After a few hours of sleep in the car, it was time to tackle the Faskally Forest parkrun.
When we got to the woodland, we met another family who had also driven through the night, from even further away-Canterbury! They were here to celebrate Laurence's 250th parkrun on their way to a holiday on Skye. New friends made as we chatted about our parkrun tourism adventures, waiting for the later start of Scottish parkruns at 9:30 a.m.
Soon after, more friends arrived. AJ, who’s joined us at several parkrun locations in England, was with us again, this time closer to her home turf, though she still had a fair drive from Dundee. It was also fantastic to finally meet Connor, someone we’d heard a lot about from AJ but hadn’t met in person. He had convinced his parents to bring him from Dundee to join us for a parkrun. It was lovely to meet them all.
As we all tried to figure out how to get from our cars to the start, AJ took charge since she’d run this parkrun before. She took great delight in warning us that we were in for an “undulating” course.
She wasn’t kidding! After a quick briefing, it was 3, 2, 1, go-and straight up a hill. Iona insisted on ultra rules, so we started by walking. As the incline eased, we picked up the pace and enjoyed our run with soft pine needles underfoot and towering pines above us. Delicious smells of chocolate wafted over us as we ran. Not sure what was generating them, but the woodlands smelled divine. The hills, though, were less divine. Up and down we went, completing the three-lap course. Fortunately, the beauty of the woodlands, lakes, flora, and fauna distracted us from our burning legs. It truly was an “enchanted forest.”
Three laps complete, we headed back downhill to the finish, a speedy downhill sprint, making sure we didn’t trip over tree roots or rocks.
After Ewan and Ruth crossed the finish line, we strolled back through the woods to our cars and headed a short way up the road to the Red Deer Pub at Pitlochry Golf Course, the designated cafe for Faskally Forest parkrun. Wow, what a breakfast! The full golfer’s breakfast had everything-haggis, black pudding, and tattie scones-perfection! Iona and Ewan were also presented with a massive bag of sweets brought by AJ from another fan, to power future parkrun adventures.
We enjoyed plenty of parkfaff, chatting and making loom bands, but eventually, we tore ourselves away from friends old and new and headed further north for the last 150 miles of our journey to Gairloch for the rest of our Scottish adventure. What a fabulous start to our holiday!

    About Ian, Iona and Family
    ===============================
Each week on this channel Ian (Dad) and Iona share our little adventure experiences, often joined by Ewan (Iona’s older brother) and Ruth (Mum) too.
Our weekends often start with parkrun. Iona is on a non-repeat parkrun tourism streak having now visited over 100 different places since she started parkrunning. But we don’t just do parkun and dash home, we love exploring the area and often use bikes and trains for our travels to keep our carbon footprint low and because it adds to the adventure too. When school holidays arrive, longer adventures are possible with Ewan and Iona both being keen cycle tourists and mountain climbers!
So if you like heading outdoors and your idea of a perfect weekend includes parkrun, climbing a mountain or exploring new places on two wheels then we would love to have you join us on our adventures.
We’d love it if you subscribed so you can follow our journey and hopefully be inspired to get out the door and have your own little adventures. Do like and leave comments on our videos too on questions you might have or ideas for places to explore or adventures to go on.

It would be a tough course to really go for it on, fortunately I was running with Iona so can take it nice and steady and enjoy the scenery 😀

Great video 😁 I already had other plans arranged for the weekend, otherwise I would have gone along to Faskally as well. It's a great route but I think undulating is an understatement 😂
I'll hopefully come along the next time you get to a Scottish parkrun
(also, I hope the kids enjoy their sweets. There should be enough there to fuel plenty of parkruns!)

It’s the trail runners definition of undulating, ie our word we use to shield ourselves from the full horror of the hills 😀
Thanks so much for the sweets, definitely fuel a few runs 😂 well hopefully get another Scottish parkrun in soon it would be fab to meet up
