Portal: The prequel should be made, where you play as Doug Rattman
Except we already know Doug's story. He worked for Aperture, and was the only one to survive GLaDOS's neurotoxin when she was activated. He moved Chell to the top of the test subject list, and then just hid. That's the entirety of his story.
PokemonTom09 But what lead to that? We don't have all the answers yet
faissialoo
He just worked for Aperture Science. Knowing a person's motivations for becoming a scientist isn't exactly exciting.
You could play as an employee when cave Johnson was around.
Wayne Berg I suppose. Maybe like one of the people who was involved in the GLaDOS accident?
Actually, it's not artificial consciousness. It's brain mapping. Aperture didn't create GLaDOS, they uploaded Caroline. They had already created many forms of AI even with personalities and voices. GLaDOS isn't a core, she's a person without a human body.
No, Caroline is just a part of GLaDOS's AI. And there is a différence between making an AI and making an AI with à consciousness. The cores were basically byproducts of the research made to create GLaDOS since they were initially made to regulate her. Other robots like turrets aren't conscious.
I believe the coop robots are though, but they were made after GLaDOS.
At least this is my opinion.
@@eclipses6605 In my opinion, the turrets are alive in some way.
@@MrHatman26 they have been displaying a remarkable amount of sentience
4:45 In the event the weighted companion does speak to you, the enrichment center advises you to disregard its advice.
lol, true
The filming in this was really well done, I enjoyed it a lot. I only wish you could have made the companion cube look a little more realistic.
I like the companion cube as it is, as it gives it more of a phillosophical meaning, an also refers to the schizophrenia of Rattmann causing it to talk.
Quad0Gaming Fair enough
Weirdo bob Oh okay.
ratman is chells father
he adopted her from cave johnson and caroline johnson (Glados)
only 9 year differance
glitch in machine
hold your applause ladies and gentleman
mmmhhmm
Still a fave after all these years. Real work of love
the music is absolutely beautiful.
It's all by Johnny Ripper
I wonder what genre this music is? I know it's techno of some kind, but it seems to be more of a "reflective" type of techno. Definitely makes me feel emotions that other kinds of techno do not.
7:50 better hiding spots exist.
Ikr a thin pole
Did everyone miss the Schrodinger's Cat reference?
12:18 - "Both dead and alive until someone opens the box".
ohhhhhh
Seems like you missed it at 11:18
What a load of garbage.
Thx, Fact Core!
didn't miss it. it's all the plot from entire portal. so,its just... common
Found this again after hearing a tiktok that used the song in the beginning...
Man... even 8 years later, it's still such a beautiful video. The story of Rattman is so bitter sweet...
Why has valve not taken advantage of his story and given us a prequel/side story game or even made something like this into a full on movie?!
Portal the most complicated series of anything ever
Douglas Monsert honey have you even heard of Kingdom Hearts?
Treyarch's Call of Duty Zombies.
The BioShock and Dishonored series also have some pretty complex lore behind them. Portal is tied with them, though, in my opinion. ♥
Metal fucking Gear my dude.
Douglas Monsert not really
This answers a lot of the questions that have burned at me since I played portal 2, such as:
*Why did only Chell survive? Surely if she survived on her own, someone else did. (Answer: Rattman saved her)
*How and where and why did Rattman know to write those things on the walls? Surely another scientist would have known as well if they were still alive. (Answer: only Rattman survived)
*Where did Rattman go? {I had always assumed that he was still alive, that he was watching you, maybe when the panels on the wall moved, he was there, looking after you}
If you really think about it, the story of Rattman and all of Aperture science, goes deeper than you will ever know.
***** Yea that's what I meant lol. Just didn't know how to word it :)
This video is almost interely based on the Lab Rat comic, you should check it out. It gives a lot of backstory.
I have another question when chell defeated glados and was being dragged away by a party escort bot y couldn't he just snatch chell away and run away from the bot
this video is one of the only things that brings me out of a panic attack. it's a good tool to put things into perspective, and get my mind going on something other than my current existence. The music is so beautifully painful that it brings me to another place. like a dream. thank you to everyone who worked on this project. well done.
This is fantastic
if the creators of portal at valve have seen some of the videos they have inspired and the talented film makers that have created them i hope they feel proud of what they have done this is one of the best games created with a amazing plot and back story cant wait till conversion
This is legitimately one of the best fanmade... Well, fanmade things ever. It's clear that a lot of effort and time went into every aspect of the film, from the props to the overall theme of the piece. The editing was superb and the voice acting was spot-on and really displays how the Portal series is more than meets the eye.
Aww he's carrying around the cube he made himself!
:>
This is by far, the best Rattmann short-film out there.
I come back to watch this at least once a year for the nostalgia of it.
But every time I watch I get a feeling that feels exactly like trying to run in a dream, if that makes sense
Is it a wet dream?
Yooo I thought I was the only one who came back
It's like this fight-or-flight signal going off. That means the channel did a great job at portraying how high the stakes are, making the audience feel anxiety.
Here I am again. Having a giant anxiety attack and in big need of watching this video with my sound canceling headphones.
Every sound
Color
The music
His facial expression.
The lights
Everything here helps me direct my anxiety to the right place, and turn my brain onto something else.
At 6:27, it was a nice touch when they put the sounds from one of the Rattman dens (an easter egg in Portal 2) in there.
ik 10 years old comment, but I happen to revisit this video bc GLaDOS/portal 2 lives rent free in my mind and
I once made a video of that voice clip, where I but subtitles for as much of it as I could. If I could redo it now I would change some of it, but it got a ton of views. That particular clip used a part that I thought said something really fitting, so I wonder if anyone else heard what he said in that voice clip
Guess what rhymes with Black Mesa...

I dunno, but it's definitely not 3.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVEEE THIS IS SOOO WONDERFUL!!! PORTAL IS SO ALIVE! NOT DEAD ALIVE! AND Dougg......
I love how at the end when chell wakes up you can gear Wheatley ( I think that's how you spell it) in the background
That was pretty good, it really brought the comic to life, the only thing is that it was painfully obvious that the Companion Cube was made out of cardboard. And I don't care if it did kind of appear like that in the comic, you COULD have something that didn't look like a cardboard box, or at least covered it in a flat material that was flat so it looked at least somewhat metallic.
Weird. It's almost as if it was supposed to look handmade. Like, if Doug had made it from a box out of loneliness and painted it. He even strung a rope through it to carry on his back at one point. And we thought we could fool you all. If only it were an deliberate choice of artistic license as if to make somebody say 'It's painfully obvious that it was made out of cardboard.' Better luck next time, I suppose.
+Synthetic PictureHaus I love that! Thats exactly how I felt.
Alasdair Husk o.0
+Synthetic PictureHaus you're right, it's a handmade cube
+0MindSwept0 Maybe it wanted to recreate the frantic sketchy nature of the comic.
there should be a portal 3 where you play as doug rattman
yeah i know :(
Rattman was a scientist, not a test subject. Also, I highly doubt GlaDoS would ever do experiements with HUMANS ever again.
rat man is dead if they made a portal 3 they should have doned a half life 3 first or i would kill every one
Sorry but portal 3 will not happen, they are not making another portal.
A Trusted Friend In Science™ well there is gonna be another portal but under a different name. It will show what happened between the 2 parts of portal and supposedly it will be a F2P
WHY U NO SHOW THE FILE AT THE END with the Chell never gives up: do not test ?
well then they probably couldnt fit the weatly refrence in.
@@liquidred257 Wheatley voice ın top of the file on screen would just work too.
Fantastic performance, loved every part of this.
R.I.P. Doug Rattman
Get back to work, (this has been a prerecorded message) 2:49
And since I first watched this, the first quote has become my favorite quote of all time.
I love it! But I was hoping they'd pan over to Chell's files where it would have given "Doesn't give up. Ever." And a Binary Code of "The Cake is a Lie." It was amazing, tho. Loved every bit of it.
Pretty good movie
The only thing i can complain about it's that the file that shows Chell extreme stubbornness was not shown
I don’t know if any of the original team still monitors this channel, but I just wanted to let you know just in case, that this video was my childhood
PickChickMC i agree i believe it's her father also, mostly because it shows in portal 2 chell made one of the bring your daughter to work day projects, and it says she used her dad's contraption and the contraption and the aperture science logo meaning her dad had to be one of the employees
Exactly. Plenty of evidence, that would explain why he's so determined to save Chell only.
But i also believe that she was adopted by Ratman and her first parents were cave johnson and caroline think about it the turret song talks about chell being caroline's baby and before you say "Thats impossible chell would be dead" remember chell was in stasis "She will be dead and alive untill someone opens the box"
Both of those theories are really farfetched. Doug wasn't really intent on keeping Chell alive, in fact, at the end of the first Portal game, Doug almost abandoned Chell. He just decided to move her to the top of the list because her profile said she was extremely resilient, so Doug figured that Chell was the best chance at defeating GLaDOS.
As for the theory that she is Cave and Caroline's son: Cave died before Chell was born, or she was really young when Cave died. Cave died sometime in the 80's, and Chell was presumably less than 10 during the Aperture Science Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, which occurred sometime in the 90's. Which means when Chell was born, Cave was either already dead, or somewhere older than 60 and about to die.
oh MAN I was looking for this it's STILL SO GOOD
How do you people even do this?
What Dat Person Said
Effort and. Time
Portal is my favorite game of all time and this is really good! You guys did an amazing job
@Thomas Shaw Yeah it’s my cosplay of her :)
Fantastic movie making skills! Probably the best short film I've ever seen and what makes it better is that its based on one of my favorite topics! Good job Synthetic PictureHaus keep up the amazing work!
Not going to lie, this is an AMAZINGLY made short film. I love it! but... dat companion cube do bro xD don't they have like a life sized replica?
Simply amazing - fantastic work - captured the Portal universe superbly. Josh Work was totally convincing
This is truly spectacular. I just love everything about it. The only problem i had with it was a small one and that is I sort of feel that the companion cube can speak not because it's an AI. But more because Doug's schizophrenia makes him imagine that the cube can speak. Or Game Theory's theory that the cubes are actually stuffed with other test subjects.
***** I'm not a expert on it myself but I believe that it does make you a bit mad but also creates people that aren't actually there.
***** xD
+xX5h3D0wD3m0nXx Schizophrenia is a form of psychosis in which the brain has difficulty discerning reality from fiction. Symptoms include delirium, visual and auditory hallucinations, as well as hearing voices in your head. One might believe that they are something they're not, such as the reincarnation of a celebrity, or just see/hear things constantly. Symptoms vary from person to person, but yes, it can be credited with madness.
LunarLunacy thanks, that's a better explanation.
ethanhenare1 No problem!
I feel like I understand Doug Rattmann's character more now.
I always come back here every few months this video means alot to me ive been watching it for years
Woah, it's so cool to see the comic come to life. Great job :)
amazing! you guys are really good at this! like insanely good!
All the pictures in the comic is moving!
Still, after all this time, this is still the best portal short film out there. You stick so well to the script and it's just perfect!! I love this Doug too, though I got the impression he was older in the comic (when he had the beard anyway). Love it!
I personally think Rattman speaks way to calmly.
this was great except for the fact that the companion cube looks like a cardboard box a three year old scribbled on
Or a paranoid schizophrenic suffering long-term trauma.
Well he made the companion cube. After it got incinerated
(But hey, that's just a theory. a DRISCONATOR theory!)
Or it just might look like that to him because he's ineane
Drisconator T.V. is this a fellow game theorist I see?
This vidéo deserves to get millions of views !!!
"both dead and alive until someone opens the box," is referring to the companion cube but is also a direct quote from "Schrodinger's cat"
I liked this a lot. My biggest issue was the man who portrayed Doug Rattman, because he has this weird way of being both over the top and under the bottom in his acting. But overall a fantastic short.
7:52 is the best hiding place ever lol
I love how this was done! I love how pretty accurate it is to the comic. Anyone who hasn't read the comic, and is a portal fan, the comic is the story in between portal 1 and portal 2. I loooove the comic.
NOW WE NEED PORTAL 2 MOVIE!!!!!!!!!
I don't know why so many people are complaining about the cube. I think it's perfect. I think it means that.. He lost the original companion cube, and of course missed it. So he built a new one best he could. And not the whole short film should be perfect. There always has to be human error to make up a good film =)
Hmm..
It takes one Bullet to kill Doug Rattman
It takes a lot more bullets to kill Chell...
8:13 Lost Dharma sign/double easter egg its in HL2
Chris is in hd City 17 is in Europe so its impossible for the citadel to be in america.
xXtherealchaosXx just a fun Easter egg ^^
I love how high production this is, but Doug's companion cube is a cardboard box🤣
This was awesome and so well done.
please tell in the discription if it has flashing lights. I have epilepsy, and I couldve had a seizure
BUT I GOTTA SAY, THAT WAS AMAZING
Evan Homestuck DON'T SPAM
Liam Benjamin i wasnt fucking spaming i posted 2 fucking comments
I've seen a lot of videos with "flashing lights" and never seen any warning (not saying there shouldn't be, I've just never seen one).
***** Which is why there should be. I think so, at least. Video games have them. Some movies do too, I believe. I think RUclips should require to make people put in information like that, actually :) Though, I don't see as many flashing lights as Evan did. But I did see all fast cuts. That must be what he was talking about.
4:34 I never thought I'd see Shia Labeouf taking pills.
Anyone notice the Lost symbol on the door at 8:14?
I'm having a really big depressive episode right now, ...and this video is helping somehow. Like the feelings have somewhere to go.
*This is one of, if not the best short film I have ever seen. Amazing all around.*
7:50 "They'll never see me behind this thin post!"
Also, thought this was just okay. The comic version had much more depth to it as far as his schizophrenia and his relationship with the Companion Cube, specifically how his taking of the pills slowly fades the cube's "personality" until it becomes an inanimate object again. Also, the comic gave the impression that the cube was a female to Doug, in that it's colored completely pink (rather than just the hearts) and he tells it "I'll always need you". I could be misinterpreting that, but that's how it came off to me. The only difference with that is that if he's in love with the cube, it gives more depth behind his decision to take his pills, knowing he may never talk to his cube again. Then there's the actual cube itself in this video. Very poorly done, but oh well. This video is missing a few elements from the comic, but these were pretty minor things.
I agree. It didn't include everything I quite expected, and the depth in the comic wasn't portrayed as well as it was here. Oh well.
Its a short film for a reason. If they had more time on their hands to increase the lenght of the video to further the relationship, they would have included it
Jason Phillips Sorry, but I don't think it being a short film is an excuse. It was more in the directing than the length. This video included pretty much everything from the comic, just wasn't portrayed well enough in my opinion. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, I'm giving my constructive criticism as to how I feel it could have been better.
I'd like to sincerely apologize on behalf of the author by putting all this time, effort, and work on what likely is a fairly small budget to entertain their viewers.
An don't complain there's things missing from the comic. Have you ever seen a movie remake of a book? Key word: remake. It doesn't have to be an exact copy of the comic.
This is one of the best videos I've seen in a long time
film was great. acting was meh, but for a fan short film this was really good.
This is my favourite short film of all time, by far
Everything 9/10 but the companion cube -2/10
francis madden
The companion cube is designed to look horrible, it's Doug Rattman's cardboard recreation of the actual companion cube. He lost his real one so he made a fake one.
QsfProductions Games Machinimas And More!
... oh well in that case 10/10
THE COMPANION CUBE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A GIRL!!!!
I don't think it ever stated specifically whether it was or not but I pictured it as a girl too.
rattman constantly said she and her in the comics when he was talking about the cube
Really? Huh. Guess I haven't read it in a while. Well they messed up there then.
Sir Boom™ easily fixed, they can just redub :D its not like they have to sync up lip movement lol
ya XD
This has to be the best portal fan made video ever
This video alone earned him a subscriber
guys the cube really talks! not only in lab ratt comics but also in portal 1 and 2 listen carefully when companion cube throws in the grid
One word to describe this. Beautiful.
There should be a presequel of portal 2 called Portal Memories, where you play as Doug rattman in portal 1 and 2 and you're on an adventure to escape and you find out about Chell's family during the game.
I've definitely watched this before.. but I miss the series with portal.. I need to play it when I get home
The best Portal Movie I've seen on youtube yet...
if you've read the portal comic: lab rat, which was the inspiration of this clip, you can see how everything is there, every phrases, every emotions and every schizophrenia patterns ahahah, very well done, and the music is very fitting.
this will always be the best portal fan film
This short film is one of the best I've seen. I love how you kept with the original comic yet shortened it a little. Beautiful ,simply the best I've seen...
Next you guys should make a walk-thru scene of aperture science where the camera follows a couple of scientists talking about shower curtains while in the background there are astronauts, war-heroes and wealthy people all following blue and orange lines to their testing chambers, all sorts of inventions and equipment firing off in the background as they turn corners through the halls.
I was confused in alot of it, so I read the comic and I pretty much get it now. Great job on this. It's awesome.
It really is just so amazing. I find myself holding my breath the entire time I'm watching this. I do love the character of Doug Ratman, especially since he takes medication for a psychological disease and look what he's able to accomplish! I take medication too, though not for schizophrenia. But it kinda makes me feel like I could be a hero too. :)
When you run the transmission Doug had in SSTV it shows the aperture logo on the moon with the companion cube in view. So rattman is on the moon, like when cave Johnson kept saying that they were testing in space.
The acting in this is incredible!
Doug's actor did really well. All of them did really well. Great job, all of you!!! You're all amazing.
Can you imagine the exhaustion of a person who is constantly running around with a box on their back? Poor Doug.
its really cool that you guys take the time to make these Aperture Science videos.
its like, you guys make so good videos about it, why take the time to make your own? they are just so perfect in a lot of aspects.
Very well done. He actually looks like Rattman. Very nice!
Dude, this is completely amazing. The only thing I think you missed is to mention the Schrödinger´s experiment with the cat and the box, wich is important for the "dead and alive" statement. But I can´t ask for more, the video is freaking perfect.
After Cave Johnson said what he said, it said "This has been a pre-recorded message", meaning the person in charge whenever GLaDOS was being made was using pre-recorded messages of Cave Johnson whenever Johnson was in charge.
This would be awesome as a full tv series.
These guys should be in movies! They act really good!
this was really well made. he painted Chell pretty well too
*W H O A R E Y O U*
The weird thing about this is this is what goes through my mind every minute of every day
same here
XD
Calloffish15 no really though its kinda scary
lol
rattman is one of the saddest video game story/lore I have ever encountered. I cried a little when I read the lab rat comic.
Amazing! The acting was very realistic, you pulled out the story as if this seems like the origin of the comic! This video deserves way more views than it has. :D
I love this! It was so similar to the comic too which makes it even better!
wow that was really impressive. the voice acting was REALLY good
Absolutely amazing! You should be the director of a movie!
