I do like the idea behind battery backups. However, in Texas, when we lose power, its for hours to days. Last winter was weird. We had power for 40 to 45 minutes and then lost power for around 30 minutes for over a week. After I figured out the on/off cycles, I decided to plug my tanks into a generator. On day two, the pull cord on the generator broke. I replaced the cord, but also bought another generator. I alternated generators for the remainder of the storm. Future project will be connecting specific circuits in the house to a plug that connects to one of our generators (certain lights and outlets, wifi, and fridge and freezer)
With one generator, I was able to run 6 pumps, 3 LEDs, 2 skimmers, 1 UV, 2 heaters, 3 wave makers, 2 apex contolers.

I definitely agree Best way to go is a generator. $150 more that they are selling the battery backup thing for you can buy a generator that powers “pretty much” your whole house

Before even the tank I got a generator. 2800 Watts, however I recommend an inverter generator that is a tri-fuel. Mine is a dual fuel but just as good. Gasoline needs to be maintained but propane can sit for 10 years with no maintenance. Add in two AVR1500 UPS and I’m good for 10 plus days.

Definitely a must for any reef tank, for the peace of mind it’s money well spent

My battery backup would only run my return for 4-5 hours best.
Now I just use a “D” battery run air stone for gas exchange and flow, last about 4 days before Battery change so I could go for quite some time if needed.

    I have a generator but a battery backup w
should be my next investment. What a piece of mind if your not home if you lose power, before I fire up the generator.

I’ve got a fluval evo 13.5 and the power here has gone out on numerous occasions from storms however rarely from snow storms as it doesn’t get to bad where i am in ohio. luckily my room is always warm but the only “problem” i’ve had with power outages is my anemone wandering my tank looking for a spot while also climbing on other corals and hurting them. a backup battery is definitely on my reef tank need list. great video, you never realize how important it is until something goes wrong

Nice thing to hove for a single pump. I could see having one or two if you are in a condo or apartment but I purchased a generator a few years ago and it runs a few of the most important things in my house.
Great video as always with the winter months ahead and power outages coming it would be a good investment!

I like the icecap because it's plug n play. you don't have to be there to switch to battery manually this thing switches automatically!
You can make your own for $10 on amazon + the price of any battery you like, but this is a no brainer :-)

Lol just put a larger breaker in.. they are cheap. Shot off breaker panel. Pop the old one out. Unscrew wires. Screw wires into new breaker. Pop new breaker back in. Turn breaker panel back on. Simple as pie.

I use Golabs portable power pack from amazon around $200 when on sale. Same Amp hours as the echotech but LiFeP04 batteries vs lead acid. Has 2 direct 12v connections, USB for small fans or lights. Inverter to connect low voltage equipment and direct connect for solar panel. It can run an mp10 on 12v for days.

I have 2 icecap back ups great investment! However they didn’t run my Jebao power heads so that sucked but got them on my gyres and I’ve had to use them several time now.

Battery back up should be way up there as necessary gear in my opinion. It’s just a given that power will et some point go out for whatever reason. Why take the chance. Great vid!

Wait, let’s talk about Krispy Kreme! How are you getting Krispy Kreme in Canada? Krispy Kreme is a American southern donut shop. Created in the deep South of Georgia (not the country, the state).

The only problem i have with battery backups are their shelf life.

Personally, these are a waste of money along with the Ecotech battery backups for Vortechs. If you can run the power heads great, but it does you no good when you do not have a heater for your water. The only thing the Icecap works for is the return pump, not everything. Generator is the way to go and for 250 US you can buy a 2000 watt generator that's very small and will run your entire system for weeks with fuel or propane. I have an APC 1500 watt battery backup that will run my entire setup for a couple of hours until I can get the generator going. Just some info, but those Icecap and Ecotech backups are a waste if time and money.
