In this video, I explain the process of how I extended the runtime of my current UPS. The concept was very simple with adding in a few components and programming the Apex unit. This DIY shows you how I was able to extend my runtime up to three hours with a simple relay and a command in Apex. I have a list of the parts that I used below so if you are interested, feel free to click on the link and purchase the item. It will really help this channel out.

Do you have info on how you connected the relay to the apex breakout box itself?
At 11 minutes into the video, I talk about how it's connected along with the programming that I use.
@@ModernReefer thank you. I must have missed the text. This is a wonderful solution and idea. Just bought the relay part.
Dude your Apex can do this with out you doing what you did. There is a power monitoring mode on the Apex if you turn that on and add a command that if power goes out only run outlet so and so.
Thanks for sharing. I did not know it exist but the method I have still allows the apex to be running. My main goal is to still be able to control the apex while the power is out since it's on battery backup. I had it setup this way so that I can still control my Apex when I'm out and about.
It's been a minute Paul. Why not just plug only the essentials to the UPS? The only thing I have on mine is my wave maker that's aimed at the top of the water. I just need oxygenation til I get home.
Yes that will work too and would be the easiest solution. For me, I wanted to be able to control my tank while the power is out and have apex notify me.
@@ModernReefer Gotcha. Wouldn't it still notify you if you plugged the UPS into Apex so when you lose power it's on but you still get notified? I'm just asking to see if it's something I'd need to implement.
@@StNovaSt If the Apex is plugged into the wall outlet while the UPS is plugged into the Apex outlet (Outlet > Apex > UPS) and if the power goes out, the Apex will also go out. The equipment plugged into the UPS will continue to run. In my case I have the UPS to the wall, apex to the UPS while all equipment is plugged into the Apex outlets (Outlet > UPS > Apex).
@@ModernReefer Oh ok. I thought the notification was cloud based with the Apex where once it lost power, a notification would be triggered. I get you now.
@@StNovaSt So I get a text when the power goes offline. The Apex has that ability as long as the apex is still online (running through the UPS) and the internet cable modem has a ups connected to it. So far it's been working okay the past few days but the ultimate test would be when there's a power outage.
Where is “here”?
Sorry. Cali.
@@ModernReefer me too
@@ModernReefer you ever had of anyone putting reef tank in garage ?
@@hkn2718 Yes. I know a lot of people running frag tanks and displays in their garage.
@@ModernReefer do they have any problems with heat, condensation, rusting? Thank you
