The amount of people in this comment section who are not even thinking about the fact that this scene is taken out of context is absurd. This scene is a flashback, so it's important to consider that this isn't the present. It's years in the past when Hen first became a firefighter, things were worse back than, this is before "don't ask don't tell." She's not being emotional or having a breakdown, she demanding to be respected and treated as an equal in he place of work, which is the bare minimum. Racism is a very real issue, even today, especially against dark skin masculine people (men or women). If you're going to b*tch about the scene, at least watch the episode or find some context. Otherwise, you'll just sound like and idiot.
Definitely seems out of context, but before this flashback did they actually show how they were treating her differently/badly? Because let's say this is a throw in scene and all she said was 'things were bad so this is what i did' does sound very 'I'm the victim, feel bad for me!' if not given context to actually show what was happening. I've only seen this through clips so I'm asking if it did or didn't have better context in the episode on why SHE acted like that, what was done to HER and not just her lashing out as a 'I'm a collective victim just for being what i am even though no one's done anything to ME'
She's a rookie; she'll get that respect when she earns it. And what the hell do you mean "back then," she joined LAFD in 2010, not the fucking 70s. The year she joined was the same year don't ask don't tell was repealed.ffs
@yukiochan1 the whole episode was a flashback, so we get to see how she was treated. The captain called her a diversity hire in front of everyone as soon as walked in, he said that money spent on women in the fire academy was wasted money, that people would die because she wasn't strong enough to carry them, that she would hold the team back because she is woman... a lot of stuff like that. This episode is called Hen begins and I think a really good way to gauge how much the way she was being treated was misogyny is to compare it with Chimney begins and seeing how he was treated when he first started.
