A 3 to 4 year old car battery is not old if it is properly maintained and not run flat or left to self discharge until below 10 or 11 volts. I just replaced a 9 year old battery in my Ford Crown Vic. What you call jump starting is putting the deal battery in series with a good battery and the charger. To be honest, I've never thought of doing that and never seen it done, but I will take your word for it. I have seen people put the two batteries in parallel, (positive to positive, negative to negative) with jumper cables for a short period of time to get enough charge into the dead battery so the charger will start charging it. Using an old fashioned "dumb" charger will also do the same thing.
This particular battery I called old because it wasn't maintained at all. It came out of a car that was sitting for over a year. When initially hooked up to charger it read "bad battery". I've run into this issue on numerous occasions because I buy abandon cars all the time and bring them back to life. When I had everything on the table in my garage the other day I figured I would share this little trick I've done so many times. Now I did forget to mention that this does not always work on every battery. Some come back to life and some are just completely dead and gone. It's worth a try though.
@@alhuegayle7550 The problem you have is that most new "smart" chargers will not start charging a battery that is below a certain voltage. The old fashioned chargers that lacked the electronics would happily push their rated current into a completely discharged battery. And, just like your experience, sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn't.
