    Done this one every day for a month now and had to miss the top 2 cycles of the arpeggios off at first. Can now manage all very cleanly, even those pesky 'E's. Cheers Jeff

    For a baritone, some transition happens around B3-C4 and also at E4. I can break at C4. But I can also sort of push and yell and make it to Eb4...Which one is considered the baritone "break"?

      not trained well enough, overtime when you can build your voice up to a4 properly, the breaks will smoothen out to a kind of feeling where more resonance happens in the head. Don't worry about your vocal breaks right now just worry about building your voice up.

    Hey Jeff, I'm a bit confused. I'm a baritone (I think) but at no point during these exercises did I have to flip to my falsetto to hit the high notes, they were all in the chest voice the same way you were singing them. I was under the impression that singing over the break means singing over the place where one has to flip from chest voice to falsetto. Which of your videos teaches that aforementioned technique?

      Interesting question. A lot of your question depends on context. I use the terms secondo passaggio (the break) to mean the transition between thyroarytenoid dominant singing and cricothyroid dominant singing (chest voice to head voice respectively). If your use of the word 'falsetto' is referring to 'head voice' and you consider them synonymous, then we will not agree on the registration event placements for the baritone fachs. This video crosses the secondo passaggio for baritone range vocalists. The secondo passaggio for baritone range vocalists, as identified by Richard Miller, rests between c4 (basso profundo) and e4 (lyric baritone). The falsetto registration event is a perfect fourth higher than each of those points respectively.

    Hey Jeff!! Noticed in some videos you also play guitar and sax. Wondered how much time a day you dedicate to those as well as piano and vox?

      I don't get to everything every day - try to at least play my major scales on piano every day and work on saxophone as much as I can manage. The saxophone is really a labor of love. My first instrument and to a certain degree, still a passion of mine. I mostly play weird stuff on it.

    Hi Jeff, all your secondo passaggio videos have helped me bring crichothyroid-dominant singing down to about F#3 and access more timbres in that range. 6 months in, however, I am still having difficulty transitioning to head voice closer to my natural "break" around D4. Will continuing working with the low transition where it is smooth eventually allow me to transition smoothly in the zona di passaggio? Thanks so much.

      Unless we're talking about a different f# I wouldn't suggest bringing your cricothyroid dominant singing down that low! That may be why the transition at d4 isn't smooth.

      Greetings from California! Hard to say what might be happening. Are you staying hydrated? My first inclination is that some small amount of mucus is collecting and irritating the vocal fold. If not that, it would take some exploration to figure out what's going on.

    Hi again Jeff, i am geting into some trouble with this exercise video and i dont understand what is happening. I can do the exercises in the "sing over the break baritone to baritenor" (video from the year 2020) and in the the 3 videos serie "how to sing high notes for male vocalist -part 1,2 and 3-" easier then the exercise in this video. I can sing the notes but i hear it weak and airy, and that not happen in the other videos, as far as can tell at least. Am i doing something wrong? or the exercise in this video are harder than in the other videos? I cant find an answer by myself, any help will be much appreciate.

For starters - why not try only doing a section or two, or a single exercise from this video instead of the whole thing. Do your other warm ups and exercises as you would normally, then come to this one and pick one segment of it. See how it goes. Let me know what you find.

      It really depends. Try recording yourself and listen to it carefully. You have to evaluate whether it's actually nasality coupled with an abduction of the vocal fold versus pharyngeal singing. The latter is desirable, the former, not so much.

      @@cuijaalbino I've actually found that doing his tenor workouts have worked to expand and strengthen my range even though I'm a natural baritone

    Hey Jeff! Quick question. What would you suggest really bring out the lower register? I'm a true baritone as soloist, but am often given the bass line when singing in ensemble numbers. My higher register has kinda soared since I began utilizing you, but I'm loosing strength in those really low notes.

      Good question. Make sure you keep vocalizing throughout your range. Especially when warming up for a performance - we ultimately want to make sure that we've vocalized to the entire extend that our songs require. Glad to hear your high range is working out!

    i can not thank you enough all the incredible material you have on your channel, a few weeks ago i started to watch daily your videos but there are so many and all if them are so good that i want to see them all (i know, little ambitious guy here)
    I have been struggling with this and other exercises (like baritone sing over the break) i feel the sound too airy and light and i have the tendency to belt but, as far as i understand that is not the purpose of this exercises. If i go on higher notes my head voice sound better, more clear and not airy, but in this range of notes it does. May i ask for your recommendation?
    I hope any of this makes any sense, i am not that good in english. Thank you again for your incredible work, a hug and blessings from Argentina

    Hey Jeff, can you please help me? I can't do a vibrato in my passagio and if I get to a certain point, it switches to head voice or I have to belt for the next note. My tongue is in the ing position, my head relaxed and I do breath support. But I can't control my larynx when it comes to my passagio until I switch to falsetto, and it strains but I can't control my high larynx when it comes to higher notes in chest voice, is that normal? Is the larynx how your voice tells you to stop using chest voice?

      The larynx affects the aperture at the top of the esophagus which can limit the flow of air over the vocal fold. It can also dispose the muscles into disadvantageous positions. Get it to be neutral! Work on exercises that stay below the secondo passaggio monitoring the larynx closely.

    Hello Jeff, My voice seems to fall between a high tenor and a baritone. In the choir I sing with, I am a 2nd tenor. I can sing a lot of the baritone register except for the lowest notes. I know this sounds silly, but I am not sure what I am. Are there exercises for 2nd tenors, or should just continue to exercise with the baritone drills? Thanks

      Great question! At some point you may have to decide how you wish to train your voice. If your secondo passaggio is really at that Eb/E natural above middle c point it's possible to go either way to a certain degree though it pays to give careful consideration to more of the aspects of your voice than just the point of transition when making that decision.
      In the meantime, yes, carry on with the baritone videos but give some thought to upper register response and endurance. That may inform how you choose to move forward with your practice!

    God damn, that's a workout! The headrush is real. Perhaps my breathing is wrong... It's not unpleasant, the headrush - simply an overoxidation of the brain, as far as I understand it from the 'Wim Hoff' method. Similar to adrenaline. Quite pleasant actually - and a good end to my vocal warmups as I'm pumped and awake!

    Thank you for these videos Jeff. My insecurities prevent me from making too much noise and I'm finding after 5.08 my voice is sounding dry and feeling right and tired. Naturally I'm not a loud person, any tips for staying relaxed and getting used to making louder sounds without straining too much? Thanks again man

      Well, I think there are two ways to approach this. One is to go somewhere that you are absolutely certain no one will hear you. The other is to go someplace where there is so much noise that no one will hear you because of everything else that is going on. You might try both and see which one allows you the most peace of mind as you get used to singing with a bit more volume.

    How much time do you recommend per day singing?

      Kind of depends really. If possible, 15-20 minutes of straight up vocalizations to keep your technique strong. Then as much singing as you need to in order to satisfy your goals. I would also advise saving time for other musical studies though - theory, voice leading, listening, ear training....

    I always get raspy as I am near the passagio and I try to let go of my voice but that seems to be lowering my larynx

    This excersise is worth it but it’s tiring to maybe because I been practicing this mix voice excerise that allows me to sing in this new mix coordination and that allows to sing into baritone range but it isn’t fully developed yet.

    I feel some tension in my throath when going for the highest notes, I'm able to sing them however there is this disconfort feeling

      Reevaluate your engagement (support/airflow.) That tension can creep in and ultimately undermine your technique.
