Showed this video once at a major scifi convention. No audience was there but numerous hotel staff were in and around working. They gathered in the room at the sound of Farrakhan's name and everybody had a huge laugh from this skit. Nobody was offended. It was a rare moment when the convention volunteer staff and the hotel staff, who were normally ignored, had a chance to connect and laugh together.
Anyone with Half a Brain understands that this brilliant skit is making fun of ALL Stereotypes... in fact it begins and ends with poking fun at Farrakhan's over the top racial methods. Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans and David Alan Grier are incredible Comic Legends and among the greatest of All Time.
Completely agree---"In Living Color" made fun of EVERYBODY--no matter what race, gender etc. That's why it was such a brilliant show---IMHO one of the greatest comedy sketch shows of all time!!
Jaye Batista SNL compares, but you're talking about 45 years worth of content comparing to something that lasted less than 10. SNL has had easily some of the best characters ever. Matt Foley - Inspirational Speaker, Gumby, Buckwheat, Wayne and Garth, the Blues Brothers, Church Lady, Beldar Conehead, Mary Kathrine Gallagher, Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer... there were a ton of worthy characters, and I would put up Chris Farley's Matt Foley character against anything either Mad TV or In Living Color made... BUT The problem with SNL is that aside from the 80s through the mid-90's great characters were far and few between, where as In Living Color and Mad TV was just dominated with easily as many great characters as SNL ever created.
Chuck.Raney Raney I think that was part of the point, to also make fun of how Lewis is a hypocrite at times. Take for example that I wasn't allowed to attend his silly temple some years ago because of my race. The Nation of Islam is a joke. Real Muslims consider him a joke. Mr. Farrakhan has always loved his double standards.
+GregJoshuaW what stands out is the orders aren't even close to identical! Starfleet and Silvia's Soul food shack are hardly the same my brotha..lmao. Also ,it's jab at white oppressors; Farrakhan is not white. just laugh at the skit...it was funny
Only if you think JJTrek is valid but no, Sulu is still straight. I'll take Roddenberry and Takei's word over people who can't even write intelligent Trek.
I didn't care for JJTrek, I found it intellectually lacking and insulting. If I wanted to watch an annoying female character suck face for half the film, I'd watch a romantic comedy or something and I hate those.
Ah. Bowie I see. I'm used to people saying they were great that way and meaning it as opposed to those who just say dumb fun. Thanks for clearing that up.
Of course Sulu was straight in the original universe. All people have to remember is him chasing a klingon woman :p I often wonder how people forget that. Maybe because it was #5 >_> Though it's been awhile, I believe he chased after/was with a few in the show. +steve conn This is not the first episode. S1E1 involved Love Connection, Great Moments in Black History, Homeboy's Shopping Network, some old people skit about taxes, a credit card skit and a Men on skit.
Haha he gets Uhura to turn on Kirk by saying all she does is place his calls, but first thing he does upon commandeering the ship is get her to place a call, lol.
Leroy Maxwell II I know, don't you get it? he combines both words like he doesn't want to say fuck but wants to say it anyway... That's why it's funny.. :D

I gotta say, though I've gotten tired of Carrey doing the same comedic shtick again and again throughout his movies, he was HILARIOUS in In Living Color and especially funny impersonating Shatner! I had to pause this every 10 seconds because I was laughing so hard!
I do. Well, you call me Buddha head and pie face, in front of everybody! Kirk: Well... Sulu: I've been out on space and haven't had one woman yet! You even take the ugly ones Captain!!! My loins are about to explode!! I WANNA DO THE NASTY!!!!!
LOL! Love the Asian stereotype jibe! But in reality, Mr . Sulu would have been doing the sushi. I don't think there was a Chinese officer on Star Trek at the time to do the laundry. (and yes, I'm Asian). And Uhura had me laughing with "Get Starfleet your dayyyyym self!"

+Joshua Drew just so you know, Louis is the leader, not just a part of the Nation of Islam. (NOI) For some reason, people have forgotten about the time Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's old house was invaded by NOI scum. They were mad that the Priest Jabbar let live there talked trash about them. So they broke in and killed everyone in the house. They shot the adults, strangled the kids, and drowned the infants. Let me repeat that. They were angry at words, so they DROWNED INFANTS AND MURDERED KIDS. Farrakhan is a sick man. His followers slaughtered an entire family over an insult. Oh, by the way, the family were actual muslims. The kids were killed because "they had the seed of heresy in them" look it up, 1973. It isn't just white people that should be wary of the NOI. (although they believe white people and everyone not black was created by a scientist as demons to keep blacks strong. no, that isn't a joke.)
+Stephen Suttles You sound like a paranoid and ill-informed idiot. I guess this is how your people are educated and what your news reports. Is it so hard to be honest and less hate-filled and prejudice in your relaying of news?? No one has killed, intimidated, maimed, and victimized more then your KKK family...NOI if anything is a direct reflection/response to the complicit nature in which people of color have been and continue to be brutalized and unjustly criminalized...So cool be wary genius
+kudabeen What Stephen said can be verified with minimal searching on the internet. Know what else Farrakhan teaches? That there are space ships orbiting the Earth waiting for the order to exterminate all white people with white-people-killing bombs. According to him, black people invented all kinds of fantastic civilizations and flying machines and pretty much all manner of technology that was even more advanced than today's technology back in biblical times, and a bunch of skinny white people crawled out of some caves and destroyed it all. I can't stop LOLing about that. The man is freaking insane.
Irony. George Takai(Sulu) is an outspoken gay rights activist and gay himself. I don't know if he was out at the time they made this, but it's pretty funny they focused on the one guy that wouldn't want women as the horny, women starved, sex maniac.
+Timothy Mitchell You've got two things wrong: 1) This was "In Living Color," not SNL. 2) The laundry reference had to do with the fact that the Chinese are stereotypically associated with laundromats. Never mind that Sulu is Japanese...
So as soon as the white man is send off stage, the girl is happy to be made a secretary again, thats kind of ironic isnt it. And the liberator immediately assumes the role of commander, leisurely giving orders from his throne. This was just dumb from one end to the other.
LackadaisicalE cmon is that all people got with penis sucking jokes? Cmon create something funny don't taik about your day job behind the Arby's with your favorite "smoked meat" lolol

Fair enough about Sulu, but, all the other officers had reason to complain. Kirk had a lock on exotic alien women
Something tells me he still hasn't.

ah In Living Color. Back when sketch shows were funny
Am I the only one who noticed that Kirk does actually kind of talk and move like that? Carrey just exaggerates it to make it more funny.
This was very funny. Jim carrey's kirk is about the funniest thing I seen in awhile. Just him moving had me laughing.

nyterpfan agreed!! Stillnone of the best sketch shows. And aling with Mad TV, home to some of the best characters ever created!!! SNL doesn't compare.
Did you notice the minute Farrakan gets the helm he issues orders to the same people instead of simply walking 3 steps over to do it himself ?
