@@sleek462 I admit, I have watched it more than 5 times. Nearly every scene with Al Sweargin in season 2 and 3 has a moment. Not to say anyone else’s acting isn’t superb, like Doc praying in his office for the Lord to put the minister out of his misery in season 1, mimicking the sounds of the soldiers dying on the field. Gives me chills. Same scene switching back and forth, the look Trixie gives Al as she leaves the room, he calls in Johnny….“You can go now brother”. It's 2020, and I've finally got around to watching all three seasons for the first time, and then jump straight into to the film. Wow! An absolute masterpiece of a show. Every single character meant something, and I think I'm going to watch it all over again. Every actor and the role they played was brilliant. The oddest thing to my eyes was the fact that there was over 10 years difference between the last episode and the film, so to my eyes the characters really did age overnight! 😆 However the quality still remained. Deadwood is absolutely brilliant. Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, Deadwood, the Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, True Detective, The Night Of...these are all flawless masterpieces of HBO. Deadwood is brilliant historical fiction.
Thank dog you didn't mention Breaking Bad, even though it wasn't HBO, and it wasn't HBO for a reason. Just because something was popular, didn't mean it was good, right McDonald's?
Greatest show around. Like others have said RIP Powers Boothe. He was so memorable on the screen in everything he played. I truly hope they give a nod to him in the movie. His daughter was in Deadwood so she should at least have some type of roll, hopefully.
Absolutely obsessed with this show when it was on. Was devastated when it was cancelled. It's like Deadwood lovers have been in limbo for the past 13 years. The movie revived us.
Very thoughtful & honest of Mr. McShane to give credit to David Milch (and others) for making the world of Deadwood so compelling to watch. Ian is a true pro, a fantastic actor, genuinely lovely person. There's no one else like him. Also easy on the eyes. In my opinion, to have the entire original cast come back to do this , (RIP Powers Boothe)was definitely worth the wait!!! Another outstanding performance is Robin Weigert as Jane , just incredible!!!
Dont forget Ralph Richeson (RIP) who played EB’s employee Richardson. I didnt know he passed away until I saw the movie. But yeah they brought back the great cast for a beautiful conclusion.
I just discovered Deadwood, and I watched the entire series, all the way through, twice. And I just watched the movie yesterday. Fantastic series, great movie. And Al Swearengen was a bit like J.R. Ewing. He was purely evil, yet you found yourself rooting for him. Especially compared to some others, such as Tolliver and Hearst, who were worse than Al ever thought of being.
If any of you guys watch NYPD Blue you will see just how similar certains seasons are to Deadwood because David Milch was the head writer on that show and many of the actors that appeared on NYPD Blue eventually appeared on Deadwood. Truly amazing indeed.
I ran across this after the 2 hour movie. It was great. Everyone was there, other then Cy, Powers Booth. He was missed. But a great way to say good- bye to one of the best tv shows ever. Many times Shakespeare like.

I'm gonna have to watch the series finale again -- because I don't remember exactly how it ended! That was quite a while ago. But ya know -- this might be a great time to revisit the ENTIRE series again, too. Season 1 was one of the best seasons of ANY television show I've ever seen.
As a person that 'walked the boards' as a pure amateur it would have been such graceful honor to be in their company. Their joy in the work shone brightly.
Ian asked that, instead of a standard flat fee for his role in the Deadwood film, he be paid $50 per swear word uttered by his character. He ended up with $46,000,000. Mr McShane has been a legend for me since 1974, when he played the tragic hero of a genuinely frightening episode of _Space: 1999._ (Don't let anyone tell you that show was crap, btw. OK, Season 2 mostly was, but Ian's ep is in Season 1.)
Rewatching and found my way to actors talking about the show and movie. It brought me back to that era of HBO and how Rome and this show both ended too early. Both shows suffered from having to cram storylines into one season that were clearly meant to be fleshed out over 2-3 seasons. This is very evident in how slow season 2 of Deadwood is. It is a excellent season but it is clear that if they had known the show would only last 3 seasons that some characters from s3 would have shown up half through season 2. Every time I rewatch Rome and Deadwood it is bittersweet. Two of the biggest missed opportunities in the history of television.

I remember getting this show on discs and watching the first few episodes by myself as my then-lover and roommate would banter about, equal parts neglectful and abusive towards Deadwood. The classic complaint about the oddity of that use of profanity, questions of accuracy for the sake of looking smart in conversation. Did not care. I was beginning to phase them out in some way. They simply were not interested in moving forward and this was another clear sign. Within a few episodes the magic of the performances were just too much to ignore. They slunk onto the couch and were entranced just the same, soaked into the drama and characters. And now we clamor for more; can't wait. Much praise to the creative direction of the writing. This is what makes shows like Deadwood or Barry so powerful; the writing and directing is connected to the acting like a limb.
