props to both gerald and rich for meantioning and recognizing the criminally underrated powers boothe. that guy chewed up milch's dialogue and spit it like venom at the camera. his cy tolliver was truly scary, especially when his pride was wounded.
I don't know that I really realized it until Gerald mentioned it, but your comment crystallized it -- Boothe was absolutely incredible in his role. I wish we'd had an opportunity to learn more of Tolliver's backstory.
He radiated an atmosphere of tensity and dread through the fucking screen whenever he was on. Deadwood didn't have many plain evil characters, but Hearst was just nasty. Seemed to hate anyone who had the audacity to clutter his mind with the irrelevant knowledge of their existence.
His portrayal of Hearst was so perfect...You HATED Hearst in the show but, you had to respect how amazing a character he was...When Alma tried to make a move on Hearst for her silver mine...THAT was such a brutal scene!
The dialogue in Deadwood was some of the best I’ve ever heard. You had to listen closely to understand what was being said. Al Swearenden’s lines were Shakespearian.
I loved that show. I'm watching it again with someone who's never seen it. I love the dialectical fabric created by the writing that really knits the narrative... Exquisite.
And yet, by ALL accounts, Hearst was a good man. He was wonderful to his employees. The Deadwood portrayal was pure fiction....which speaks to the brilliance of Milch.
I grew up watching him in Simon and Simon and knew him to be Delta Burke's husband. I didn't expect much of him in this role. I was totally proven wrong. He was incredible in this role. Now anytime I see his name in a cast, my interest is peaked.
What a line of great roles Gerald played in some of the greatest series of the last 20 years- Deadwood, of course, but there's also Justified and Longmire. Does a great job at playing morally bankrupt, power-hungry men...
My Grandpa was the greatest man I ever knew. He worked hard all his life and I never heard him say one cuss word. I once even asked him about it. He said a real man doesn't have to.
McRainey had a scene with Molly Parker where he comes close to her and speaks softly, letting her know he is her enemy. None of his words are openly violent or even sexual, but you get the distinct impression that you're witnessing a rape. Chilling in the extreme.
@vaahtobileet lol no -- I sub to zero TV providers-- I do not watch TV or movies -- I am more of a reader-- When I tell peeps I do not watch TV -- they usually roll their eyes in disbelief-- weird but true---- I have never bought any sized Flat/LED/hi def TV EVER -- EVER lol
@vickenator no TV service no HBO no nothing to do with TV -- not trying to win an award but if there was an award given to least amount of TV watched-- I'd win lol
Thanks for talking about Deadwood. One of the best written television series ever.
Deadwood was one of the greatest series I've ever watched.
*the*
The best ever, IMO.
the best ever made, together with The Sopranos
props to both gerald and rich for meantioning and recognizing the criminally underrated powers boothe. that guy chewed up milch's dialogue and spit it like venom at the camera. his cy tolliver was truly scary, especially when his pride was wounded.

There were so many well written great characters portrayed by phenomenal actors, Powers Boothe gets accidentally criminally underrated as Tolliver
Criminally underrated is dead right for Cy
"When you speak all I hear is the devil" is right, he really did
"Candidly, Richardson, as I imagine you foraging for berries and grubs, and flicking at insects with your sticky tongue, I feel a certain dismay."
Poor Richardson, he's treated so bad by Farmum.
Everyone in Deadwood was amazing...and i believe all the actors loved the writing and the acting of that show!! ❤❤
McRaney in Deadwood portrayed one of the most venally brutal villains in TV or cinema. An astoundingly good performance.
he was freaking amazing
He radiated an atmosphere of tensity and dread through the fucking screen whenever he was on. Deadwood didn't have many plain evil characters, but Hearst was just nasty. Seemed to hate anyone who had the audacity to clutter his mind with the irrelevant knowledge of their existence.
The instant I saw "Shakespearean greatness" I KNEW it was 'Deadwood.' David Milch invented a whole new poetic language for that series.
Masterpiece of a show. I have watched to many times!
GM is just so underrated. He’s always the best part of any scene he’s in. Just an actor who makes everything better
Deadwood was the best series ever.
I love Deadwood, it's my all-time favorite show
His portrayal of Hearst was so perfect...You HATED Hearst in the show but, you had to respect how amazing a character he was...When Alma tried to make a move on Hearst for her silver mine...THAT was such a brutal scene!
GM is really one of my all-time favorite actors.
I can honestly say that I felt fear when watching some of his scenes as Hearst.
The monologue that Doc gives to god during the final episode of season one should be taught in every acting class.
Personally I'd say Steve the drunks scene with Hostetler should be taught. But opinions vary
Still makes me cry just to think of it. Most powerful speech ever delivered on television, I believe.
Moooooommma, moooooommma help me fahnd mah arm... 😮😮😮🙁😭
My humble opinion is George Hurst is the greatest villain in television history.
Deadwood was a great series and he was a great character in it, he played the villain perfectly, just as he did more recently in Longmire.
Gerald McRaney absolutely killed the role in Deadwood. You really hated George Hearst, but you had to respect his intelligence and his influence.
The dialogue in Deadwood was some of the best I’ve ever heard. You had to listen closely to understand what was being said. Al Swearenden’s lines were Shakespearian.
Hearst was truly a terrifying character
I had to stop watching Deadwood because Al Swearengen got in my head and I was swearing all the time.
Try not to be such a ©ocksucker
I loved that show. I'm watching it again with someone who's never seen it. I love the dialectical fabric created by the writing that really knits the narrative... Exquisite.
Very few villains made me hate them as much as he made me hate george hurst. Which imo makes him one of the greatest villains to hit the screen.
I will never not think of him from the show Major Dad.
Mc Raney is a force. This cast rose to their ceiling. It was Milch who served as the tide to float all boats. Props also to Powers Booth.
I love how much Rich turns into a fanboy when Deadwood actors are on the show
He crushed it in Deadwood..very underrated performance..
anazing character, he did a fantastic job
And yet, by ALL accounts, Hearst was a good man. He was wonderful to his employees. The Deadwood portrayal was pure fiction....which speaks to the brilliance of Milch.
Major Dad to George Hearst is one of the all-time heel turns
The scenes between Hearst and Eb are Goated
I grew up watching him in Simon and Simon and knew him to be Delta Burke's husband. I didn't expect much of him in this role. I was totally proven wrong. He was incredible in this role. Now anytime I see his name in a cast, my interest is peaked.
Favorite show of all time...made me go to Deadwood...twice!
Mississippi man. Great show!
He said a real man doesn't have to.
f&*king right!
But sometimes the spirits compel you when polite words are unable to attune you to the necessities of the times.
Love dead wood. Love major dad.
McRainey had a scene with Molly Parker where he comes close to her and speaks softly, letting her know he is her enemy. None of his words are openly violent or even sexual, but you get the distinct impression that you're witnessing a rape. Chilling in the extreme.
And the thing is that both of them star in house of cards
Gerald plays a bad guy really really well. Longmire.....
Neverending Story's own Gerald McRaney :)
Edit - oh snap he got to work with Wolfgang Peterson. That also just occurred to me.
There was a lot of great characters with the one I really admired was Charlie utter he was my favorite
He’ll be the doctor in This Is Us to me.
Met this guy during desert shield. Came to my camp in saudi
"My only passion is the color."
So good playing a villain
This guy was soo good and scary as hearst!
Whenever Gerald shows up in a drama you know he's going to be playing a real evil bastard.
Gerald Mcraney When younger would have been a great actor to play Virgil Flowers if they put the Novels on film from John Stanford
Andrew Jackson Simon!
Deadwood has ruined every other western for me......except for thr new True Grit...become the language is magnificent 😂
Fantastic actor, made me hate George Hurst, forgot he was an actor. Forgot all the characters were acting to be honest.
Deadwood
HBO
Rich shillin
It's a bad look
Why should I care about a HBO show?
Waste of time
How come 🙄 u have so much free time
Try watching Deadwood sometime. Maybe you'll feel differently.
It's a great fucking show, but maybe you only watch theater or something.
