I'm actually worried about Benchmade. They're definitely some of my favorite knives I own, and probably my all-time favorite brand overall. I just feel like they're failing to compete properly in today's marketplace, and instead of taking care of the issues that have been complained about by everyone in the community for the last several years, they raise prices and brag about a warrany that 99% of us don't care about and will never use. I want them to stay around, but I see the same syndrome that has killed literally thousands of American manufacturers in last few decades.
I completely agree. Had benchmade seized the opportunity to create a balisong like this 5-10 years ago at a more reasonable price, they could have competed with BRS and other well known "sport-flipping" balisongs. Now, there's just no point to buying this as a flipper.

I think Benchmade is doing ok, they may not be able to compete in price with overseas brands but no one can. Sales to the online knife collector might be down but people forget that the online knife community is a very small portion of knife users. Now they may not care about the warranty but a lot of people do and Benchmades warranty is excellent and always a pleasure to deal their customer support. Also Benchmade knives hold their value quite well on the secondary market compared to the overseas competitors. When it comes to pricing, I do wish they would increase they’re MAP from 10% to 15-20% off MSRP but dealers have unadvertised sales up to 30% all the time, you just have to keep an eye out if there’s a specific model your looking for. That said, people forget that Benchmade is really the only large US knife manufacturer whose entire line is USA made and made by them. Spyderco and Kershaw for example both have large lines of knives made by overseas manufacturers where the profits can help support their US manufacturing. Even Hogue has their other revenue stream from the grips and knives are really their secondary business anyway. I should add that I’m not a super Benchmade fan who buys every model but I do support them and buy the models I really like. Also I have to say that in the last couple years I’ve noticed their QC and fit and finish has improved a lot from the years of like 2017, 18, 19. They’ve also been producing much thinner ground knives in their new models which the industry has been moving more and more towards. Plus they’ve really started to diversify their steel selection and their heat treat has always been great in my experience. Anyways that was way more than I planned on typing but I’m right there with you in wanting Benchmade to succeed but I also think the online knife collector community is a bit disconnected from the knife industry as a whole and sometimes can even be a bit snobby or fail to recognize that they’re comparing apples to oranges when looking at certain brands versus others.
The new bali doesn't really compete even though its a big update for benchmade, the bali market has gotten away from them. Replicant has almost all the same features for a cheaper price, and its years older, and has endless mod options. Cool to see benchmade back making balis but its too little too late, 4x reboot would do a lot better even though they're way outclassed these days.
Benchmade’s pricing is laughable. Most of their knives are decently well made but they’re still extremely overpriced. I guess someone is buying them or else they’d reevaluate their pricing structure.

Benchmade your prices are ridiculous for the quality you are putting out. Get your Quality Control Under-control. I own 12 Benchmade's. I purchased the Shotshow Bailout on Sale from sportsman's warehouse for $79.00 after Thanksgiving which was a great deal when your msrp was like $325. And I Returned it, side to side blade play that would not tune out, uneven blade grind loose pivot. There was a reason they had to drop the price on these to move them. I want to love Benchmade but you guys make it hard.
I just looked at the display at my local Scheels... the BM inventory NEVER changes - you can see the dust settled on the blades... take a closer look and you can see nearly every tanto (bailout I think) the grinds look atrocious - like they let everyone have a lunchtime picnic with alocohol, and went back to work
I feel like BHQ knows whenever they post Benchmade content the comment section is going to (rightfully) implode. I own three Bugouts and I enjoy them but it’s hard to get excited when they’re touting new colors for knives that have been out for 5 years with no upgrades

Was hoping you guys would have got i to the hardware of the the folding water line. Are the omega springs, axis lock, and/or screws stainless? Thats what makes the Salt line so special. Its not just the blade that wont rust.
Its a shame that benchmade has lost sight of the bali market and this is really the nail in the coffin that shows how behind they are. Its an overpriced zippy rep with less/no mod options. Also it didnt go unnoticed that they failed to mention whether its on bushings or bearings or washer, and id be willing to bet its not on bushings. Id also be curious what the minimum weight is and id guess its too heavy compared to most people's preference. Final point is the sound. The removable dampener just makes it sound like it has bad tolerances and goes to show how far removed they are from the reality of what most bali customers want these days.

Bought my Model 35 about 1994 and carried it a lot. Still have it, still carry it sometimes. It's in excellent condition. I was surprised to find out people collect them. I have many excellent knives. Apparently it is a "collection". LOL!
Benchmade has priced themselves out of the market. For those prices I will get a Chris reeve or similar. They were always a little pricey but their peers are kershaw and spyderco not 3-400$ knives.
Benchmade quality control is horrendous. Look at the spine on all of the proper for example. And to put these prices in to perspective just remember a small Sebenza can be had for four hundred dollars!
That new Hunt North Fork looks amazing. The wood with orange back spacer pops. Intersect & Adira, simply take my money as well. That mini-adamas CF auto is a must have for me.
I wish Benchmade would go back to the way they made knives in the 90’s- early 2000’s. Loved the older black class knives that sadly, they’re slowly discontinuing. The Auto Stryker (some variants) the Mini Reflex, the AFO 2. And the prices were justifiable by how durable and rugged they are. The first time I held a bugout I was super disappointed. Feels like a $50 dollar knife with a giant price tag.
Benchmade's lineup looks like something what Chinese are dumping on the marker. I would easily mistake them for Kizer knives, for example. At least Cold Steel and Spyderco are still recognizable.

I’m usually ok with the prices but I think the claymore really misses the mark. Over 300 bucks…… bro. The kershaw live wire is magnacut and aluminum in an otf for 230. The claymore is grivory, CPM D2 and 315 bucks…. That’s a hard pill to swallow. Also why make the water series blue…..so you can never find it when you drop it in the water….

Benchmade makes nice knives but I don’t consider most because the pocket clip is an afterthought. Come on and make some machined clips that match the knife design.

The Redoubt clip should be looked at again or the scales should be drilled out to allow for a side mounted clip. It likes to hold onto pockets while flaring out... Not enough headspace.
@@sheltermonkey6065 it acts as a wedge and pinches it high in the clip, flaring out the tip of the clip so it catches anything you walk by. Because it's such an aggressive wedging, it won't accept a standard 13oz denim jeans pocket lip let alone thicker work trousers without flaring out to a ridiculous extent. And to disengage, you either have to pinch the top and bottom of the knife in your pocket to pull out or flare the clip tip more to widen the wedging so it lets go. It's not conducive to a worksite as it isn't a usual clip, so it takes attention away from what you're doing to remove from the pocket or catches cords, tables, etc. Allowing a standard clip mounting would mitigate all of these concerns. AWT scales allow for standard clip mounting, but you shouldn't have to spend more money on a 180usd knife to make it work. Otherwise, the blade is gorgeous and works amazing. Holds an edge like no other and the coating keeps the blade from getting gummed up too bad, residue comes off easily. And don't get me wrong, I love that knife - it's my favorite one - I just wish the clip it came with wasn't being crowd source beta tested without disclosure cuz it really ruins the experience.
@@shkibby1 I don't wear jeans, but I tested the clip just now by folding over the waist of some other pants 4 times. So that's at least 8 layers of fabric, if not much more. The fabric wouldn't go all the way into the clip and got wedged about 1/2 inch from the top. But it didn't cause the bottom of the clip to flare out to any appreciable amount. If it's really an issue, I suggest making a video demonstrating the problem.

@@shkibby1 1. Standard Benchmade clips definitely has more clearance than the Redoubt clip... maybe 50% more clearance. I didn't measure it, but it's obvious from looking at them. 2. What brand and model are the jeans that are having the problem? There is no "standard" for jeans, unless you want to call Levi 501's a standard. 3. The Redoubt is a Black Class, and thus for miliary and LE. They don't wear heavy work jeans while on duty.

That new Hunt North Fork looks amazing. The wood with orange back spacer pops. Intersect & Adira, simply take my money as well. That mini-adamas CF auto is a must have for me.

I wish Benchmade would go back to the way they made knives in the 90’s- early 2000’s. Loved the older black class knives that sadly, they’re slowly discontinuing. The Auto Stryker (some variants) the Mini Reflex, the AFO 2. And the prices were justifiable by how durable and rugged they are. The first time I held a bugout I was super disappointed. Feels like a $50 dollar knife with a giant price tag.
Benchmade's lineup looks like something what Chinese are dumping on the marker. I would easily mistake them for Kizer knives, for example. At least Cold Steel and Spyderco are still recognizable.

I’m usually ok with the prices but I think the claymore really misses the mark. Over 300 bucks…… bro. The kershaw live wire is magnacut and aluminum in an otf for 230. The claymore is grivory, CPM D2 and 315 bucks…. That’s a hard pill to swallow.
Also why make the water series blue…..so you can never find it when you drop it in the water….
The color was *very* carefully chosen, so it seems they want you to lose the knives.

29:30. The guy is really to sell you on the grivory because it's easy to mold. Yeah no shit, it's plastic you can mold it into any shape you want. The other companies making OTFs for the same price are using aluminum and milling it. I do love that most of the knives they aren't even asking about the price point.
Actually it's much cheaper to mill aluminum/titanium than it is to develop the injection molding molds.

Benchmade makes nice knives but I don’t consider most because the pocket clip is an afterthought. Come on and make some machined clips that match the knife design.

The Necron is going to fail in the balisong market, especially if the pivots are only washers. If it’s not on bushings, none of its features will matter. Oh, and $500 for G10 and S30Vn steel?
The Redoubt clip should be looked at again or the scales should be drilled out to allow for a side mounted clip. It likes to hold onto pockets while flaring out... Not enough headspace.
What exactly happens?
@@sheltermonkey6065 it acts as a wedge and pinches it high in the clip, flaring out the tip of the clip so it catches anything you walk by. Because it's such an aggressive wedging, it won't accept a standard 13oz denim jeans pocket lip let alone thicker work trousers without flaring out to a ridiculous extent. And to disengage, you either have to pinch the top and bottom of the knife in your pocket to pull out or flare the clip tip more to widen the wedging so it lets go. It's not conducive to a worksite as it isn't a usual clip, so it takes attention away from what you're doing to remove from the pocket or catches cords, tables, etc. Allowing a standard clip mounting would mitigate all of these concerns. AWT scales allow for standard clip mounting, but you shouldn't have to spend more money on a 180usd knife to make it work.
Otherwise, the blade is gorgeous and works amazing. Holds an edge like no other and the coating keeps the blade from getting gummed up too bad, residue comes off easily.
And don't get me wrong, I love that knife - it's my favorite one - I just wish the clip it came with wasn't being crowd source beta tested without disclosure cuz it really ruins the experience.
@@shkibby1 I don't wear jeans, but I tested the clip just now by folding over the waist of some other pants 4 times. So that's at least 8 layers of fabric, if not much more. The fabric wouldn't go all the way into the clip and got wedged about 1/2 inch from the top. But it didn't cause the bottom of the clip to flare out to any appreciable amount. If it's really an issue, I suggest making a video demonstrating the problem.
@@sheltermonkey6065 does the 8 layers fit on a standard Benchmade clip no problem? There is the issue right there - getting stopped a half inch from the top of the clip. But yeah, I can make a vid about it, for sure
@@shkibby1 1. Standard Benchmade clips definitely has more clearance than the Redoubt clip... maybe 50% more clearance. I didn't measure it, but it's obvious from looking at them. 2. What brand and model are the jeans that are having the problem? There is no "standard" for jeans, unless you want to call Levi 501's a standard. 3. The Redoubt is a Black Class, and thus for miliary and LE. They don't wear heavy work jeans while on duty.
