I've been listening to classical music for about 40 years, but had never heard this piece.. Today I unearthed this musical gem -- I'm talking about a wow moment.
Meeting this piece in my teens in the 1980's, (along with Dvorak's first symphony and Alkan's Minor Key etudes) started me on lifetime search for obscure beauty. As Arthur Hoehn says, "Sometimes we learn they've been justly neglected, but most times we're pleasantly surprised." It still seems incredible to me that so much stunning beauty, power, drama and just plain fun, could be so little known.
When you have the wisdom of an eighty year- old sage, along with the technical ability to compose, you are able to strike compositional gold. Tchaikovsky's detractors are either misinformed, or, for artistic sake (due to the subjectivity involved), downright unable to fathom just what constitutes the plethora of factors designating a true artistic merit. And, when you combine such talent with both a conductor like Vladimir Fedoseyev and a pianist such as Mikhail Pletnev, the synergism explodes to make far more than 'music'. This performance ranks with the best out there for any composer and composition. Many will appreciate this truth; some will falter and find faults. - David Lyga
Another much neglected piece by Tchaikovsky. This and, for example, the Third Suite were one of the staples of his popularity during his lifetime but, as you suggest in your excellent introduction, it fell out of favour soon after. A budget recording with Peter Katin in the 70s began a modest comeback but it is still grossly under-performed. What a delight to hear (and see!) it here. Thank you so much.
I never heard Katin's, but I fell in love with this piece on Jerome Lowenthal's recording, and a while later Dimitri Sgouros'. Glad to see pianists as popular as Pletnev and even Ashkenazy are finally presenting this delightful piece.
I do believe this is the greatest interpretation of this piece..The beautiful strings and grand brass bursts. Especially in the parts that gain tension in the 1 minute mark and later in the 12:40 section. It's so magical and tbh this is definitely one of his greatest works. I absolutely adore Tchai and he's my no. 1 for sure along with Beethoven and Mahler and Bach and the rest of the greats. Absolutely explosive the amount of skill it takes to compose something even close to something like this. The piano is a very nice touch to this piece.

Why this ever fell in neglect I fail to understand, it would grace any concert program and showcase any pianist in a competition. I feel the same about the second concerto, but somehow it is always the first that is chosen. I 'grew up' with Peter Katin's recording of this work, and good as it is, it is no match for the performance here. I listened without reading the description and decide this must be a Russian performance, perhaps Igor Zhukov (whom I hugely admire in the 2nd concerto) but more likely Pletnev. I was quite smug to read I had got that right :) There are many great Tchaikovsky performers but Pletnev really is in a class of his own. The sound is quite good for a Russian (Melodiya ?) recording which I guess is already some decades old.
The Second cibcerti is not as good as the first. It does have a very dramatic cadenza though. The Concert Fantasy has a nice solo part. It is the third concerto that is neglected and Tchiakowsky only lived to flesh out the first movement. One can take Sergie Taneyev on the second and third movements is one wants to go that far.
@@underzog It seems to be a common feeling that the 2nd concerto is not as 'good' as the first. I'm not sure I agree with it. Chances are because you hear the 1st all the time people conclude it must be better. Luckily we don't have to choose :)

I’m surprised to learn that the tempo of the first movement is only Andante mosso. With those long lines of 32nd notes, I hear it as an Allegro with the note values doubled and with the beats and measures only half as long. I believe the notation choice was made for the mere purpose of disguising any semblance of a concerto first movement.

7:13 onwards is probably my favourite section of piano Tchaikovsky ever wrote. The arpeggios interweaving the melody. The build up. Chefs kiss
I'm so happy to see this, never heard of this majestic piece. Tchaikovsky really did paint his own colors with the orchestra and piano.

It is a Virgin Classics recording from 1998. Not as old as you thought.
