love love LOVE this message! Thank you so much for sharing this - hopefully other people will be inspired by your determination and positivity and believe that they can do it too. If it's any consolation, I got an E in AS level biology and am now in my 3rd year of study at Oxford so anything is possible if you bounce back from shortcomings with all you can and continue reaching for your goals
I really relate with what you said. As a recent Cambridge reject post interview, I appreciate what you said at the begining, it really doesn't diminish your ability, there are simply too many excellent students like yourself, it is more of a lottery and a certain personality that they look for. As long as you get the best grades you can and do the course you love it,where you go won't matter as much.
Quork I was a Cambridge reject post interview too. It’s tough to begin with, but I’m now at a university better suited to me (Durham!) and all of my friends were also rejected from Cambridge, and they’re all so smart and intelligent so it definitely is a lottery. We all worked so hard at a level and got grades that exceeded the Cambridge entry requirements, so they’ve obviously missed out on some good eggs!
'if you don't ever try, you'll never know' is the advice that pushed me to apply to oxford as a state school student who doubted whether i'd be able to do well at oxford. now i have an offer! it's really cool you're going to make these videos, i'm sure they will help a lot of people!!
At 22, I've had moments where I've regretted not attending University. But I barely made it out of High School and with my family's financial situation, University seemed like an impossible scenario. I still don't have any interest in going, but I have a huge amount of respect for anyone that can deal with both the stress of it all and the money situation. Props to you, Kavana!!
Thank you - this is really helpful. I just got back my year 10 results and am a bit disappointed , especially as I go to a top grammar school, but what u were saying about being ambitious and working hard in the next year has really motivated me! 😀
This was so helpful, thank you! Waiting for my results to see if I've met my Cambridge offer after extenuating circumstances and hearing your story was really inspiring!
This reminded me so much of my A-level experience...being surrounded by outstanding students just made me feel like crap after really struggling to get my results. But I'm glad it all worked out for you!
Good tips on how to get into a British university... Same thing applies to American institutions... However, the more important thing is to find an interest which you can make an honest living at and support your future family comfortably. By choosing a major in the arts, one sets oneself up for a very difficult pathway in their post-university adult life. If you're talented in theater and drama, consider a career in criminal law as a defense attorney etc. Sometimes your life takes unexpected twists and turns. I started out as the youngest kid ever admitted to the Chicago Symphony (I was 15), but ended up as a farm animal veterinarian. Never looked back. Don't let your college major dictate the path of your adult life. You can still actively be involved in the arts as a supporter, even if your career path takes you in a non-arts direction. In my case, I am a patron board member of the Chicago Symphony and had the privilege of being the sole sponsor of Libera's 2018 North American tour.
that's so helpful to hear as applying can seem terrifying ahah!! would be amazing to hear subject specific stuff from other people on your channel too! thank you :))
I got accepted into my fav uni in the UK but because of financial problem, I can't make it to the uni and ended up studying in my home country,,I was so down for the entire month,, thank you for this inspiring video.. gotta believe in my potential and work hard even more ! :)
I find it funny how gracefituk or whatever got into oxford for music with AAB (she even did a gap year and retook some exam or something), missed her offer and they still let her in? Yet you got the same grades with serious mitigating circumstances and they initially rejected you ??? No discredit to her or her achievements but just shows how biased it is towards the super upper class.
Sara Abbad but the fact of the matter remains that she got the same grades and one got in and one didn’t - don’t pretend it wasn’t to do with her class because it clearly was lol
Hmmm I was thinking that too. She retook exams and still got AAB but was accepted off the bat. Some people don't like to think about privilege whether it is class or race but it definitely is prevalent when it comes to Oxbridge.
So you’re at OXford now, right? Did you contact them after the remark? If you could do a video about that I’d be so happy. I want to study Psychology and Im considering Oxford as i have the predicted grades.
I feel the exact same with my Cambridge interviews... it was probably the best part of the whole application process. Now I just need to get the grades in just over a week’s time and I don’t know if I will😔
Noor Mahmood yes I did - this was only taken into account for my mathematics exams as they were closest to the hospital date, and meant I went from a Mid A to a high A
hey, i’m really interested in studying music at uni and i play the violin and piano but i don’t really have much orchestra experience and that kind of worries me, i was just wondering if you play any instruments and how much of the course is based on how you play and being in an orchestra environment if you get me? xx really great video btw!
Kavana Crossley as someone who did music GCSE, and also a musician, it's really not that useful in the outside world, and I don't know how you meant "versatile" in the context so I can't rebut that. In short, nobody will think you are a good musician by taking music GCSE, and if you are purely an instrumentalist then it's also not good to take. However if you want to do either music tech or music at A-level (or equivalent) then do take it, as it is useful for that.
Piers Jholden but if I don’t want to take an additional language and I have to take 2 additional GCSE’s I think taking music would b the best choice I’ve been playing trumpet from a young age and have done theory so I guess it would b a waste
By versatility I meant that skills learnt in music GCSE (if taught well) can be applied across other A Levels - Essay writing and forming arguments is useful to develop at any stage and most gcse's begin to implement this, but if someone enjoys performing music and composing as well it is a useful tool to tie these things together. No, a music GCSE alone is not that much of a worthy credential but it will teach you skills that, as a musician, you can develop on later. You can also just study subjects you enjoy, not everything has to be a key to later, although if you can do both it helps.
I have applied for the modern languages but as you said in the video like you have to write about what you have achieved before or write about your passionate subject i mean i just know the little that i have learnt from the apps thats all!! I just want to ask what you have to write about in your interview?? I am sure you'll understand and give me the efficient answer :)
Thanks so much for this video! I'm thinking of applying Economics in Oxford this year but I really have no clue how to write abt my personal statement... And also I don't have any experience in economics, do I still have chance to get in? English is not my first language so it makes it even harder... If you see my comment can you plz reply me??
Hey, just a quick question for anyone in oxbridge - if someone gets mediocre GCSEs/equivalent (talking mostly Bs with a couple of As) but then goes on to do extremely well in their final two years, would you say they have much of a chance of getting in? Or have they already messed it up. Asking because from what I can tell oxford pay close attention to your previous grades. Thanks.
Do you know anything about postgraduate studies in Oxford? What is the most important thing for being chosen? I have 2 degrees with honors (3.7 and 3.9 GPA). Is it competitive for them?
m currently doing my graduation nd final year , should I apply for masters for the upcoming session ?? International students did they have throw some extra exams or something?
I wanted to apply to oxford but apparently Cambridge is better? I have no idea but I’m glad ur POV is out there as it changes the ideas I had of what students who apply there are like and how their lives change? Does that make any sense at all😂 lols but yeh and 4 A’s wooooowww I’m not sure how u can do RUclips at the same time and still study hard enough for 4 As

Hannah Turner I can relate to this!

this was honestly such a helpful video to motivate me to work harder for going into year 13, I definitely needed it. thank you!

I think it depends on the college - some are harsher than others
Maybe in the gap year she did a lot related to the course and a lot of independent work. They value independent work more than grades.
Why did you choose oxford and not Cambridge?
Really want to go to oxbridge for economics......
I'm applying to ox as well! Hopefully I can see you around next year!

Given your medical issues in the lead up to A Levels, did you fill in the extenuating circumstances form?
Noor Mahmood yes I did - this was only taken into account for my mathematics exams as they were closest to the hospital date, and meant I went from a Mid A to a high A
How did you plan your personal statement? Like craft how to write it before you start.

Much ❤️ did you do Music as a GCSE? I’m thinking about doing it as one of my choices
I did a Music BTEC Level 2 at Brit School - but a music GCSE is so versatile and useful, it's a good humanity subject to choose!
Kavana Crossley thx for replying luckily I chose not to drop it in yr 8 was never too good at music theory tho scraped thru it with a pass

You're Trapped Cambridge pay more attention to your previous grades than oxford, as oxford tend to focus on current grades and interviews more
Kavana Crossley thanks for the info and the great video ☺
