REPORT: ACC Schools In Talks to Join Big 12, Florida State Leaving ACC Would Create Expansion Chaos.

  • The ACC stands alone among the Power Five conferences excluded from the College Football Playoff, with representatives from the Big Ten (Michigan), Pac-12 (Washington), Big 12 (Texas), and SEC (Alabama) securing spots in the final four during Sunday's selection show. Despite Florida State being the ACC's lone hope, their exclusion marked the first time an unbeaten Power Five conference champion missed the CFP, signaling concerns for flagship schools in the ACC amid ongoing conference realignment.
Texas and Washington's moves to the SEC and Big Ten, respectively, intensify worries that the decision to overlook FSU prioritizes these new "big two" conferences. The CFP committee, led by NC State AD Boo Corrigan, faced questions about setting a precedent by excluding an undefeated conference champion but provided a vague response, expressing empathy for Coach Mike Norvell and the players amid conference changes.
Seven ACC programs, including FSU, UNC, Clemson, and Miami, explored breaking the league's grant of rights last offseason. However, leaving the conference is complex and costly, with legal challenges and ongoing payments potentially totaling nearly $500 million, making it challenging even for wealthy universities to sever ties.
In an attempt to appease members, the ACC introduced a new revenue distribution model in May, rewarding success based on postseason performance starting in 2024-25. While details remain undisclosed, expectations include multi-million dollar payouts to CFP-bound teams. The model loses appeal when a prominent ACC brand misses the Playoff with an unblemished record, reflecting poorly on the conference's national standing.
CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli predicts a dire outcome for the ACC, describing this year's CFP process as the "death knell" for the conference. The committee's role in excluding an undefeated ACC champion not only costs the league prestige but also $6 million. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips finds himself in the midst of challenging times as the conference grapples with its future in the evolving landscape of college football.

Now FSU can prove being in the ACC has caused them financial damages, due to them being no difference then a G-5 Conference. The Playoff Committee needed NC State's AD as authorize the scrooge job of FSU. The ACC didn't advocate for FSU, they just let it happen. No lawsuits, nothing. That's why FSU, Clemson, UNC, and ND should head to the B1G because they would be making double what the SEC does.

Did it generate any additional advertising revenue? The networks couldn’t care less about those 6 ACC wins over the SEC if it didn’t generate revenue. Sadly, it’s about viewership numbers and advertising revenue that the conference generates as the true measuring stick. Case in point, the B1G has just signed the best media deal with the highest dollar payouts. Raise your hand if you think that’s because they have the most wins? No, of course not. They’re like 4th or 5th in wins as a conference. So why did they get the best media deal? Because their viewership and advertising revenue is better than everyone else’s. Wins and losses unfortunately don’t mean much anymore unless it’s a huge viewership and advertising generator. It’s still good for talking smack amongst ourselves but that’s about it.

They went UNDEFEATED, lost their 1st string QB, almost lost their 2nd string QB, defeated top ranked teams, and over came so many obstacles and STILL went undefeated, only to be slapped in the face. They are shown that cheating and money take precedence over hard work and honesty. They ask what more can we do? I say, nothing. You did all you could and then some. I am sorry to see you guys leave, but I will always love ya and respect your decision. We will miss you guys. Thank you for your heart and soul you gave and good luck in all you do! Now, from insiders from the SEC and BIG10, it's teams like Cuse, BC, Wake Forest, and GT who don't have a landing spot in another conference. You also have rumors now spreading about how 2 teams from each of those conferences do not want a split from the current NCAA landscape to be nfl development farms. They also do not want to be responsible for providing its own NIL every year. Could it be possible in current conference bylaws to have those teams voted out and replaced?

No one believes in "Defense Wins Championships". I grew up in Tampa and so natuarally I'm a bucs fan. In 2003, we won with a great defense and mediocre offense. Brad Johnson was just a game manager. No amazing stats but he protected the ball and didn't make major mistakes. Rodemaker with his experience could've been mostly mistake free and our run game breaks for a TD eventually and Rodemaker can make some midfield throws. He showed that in FL. There's plenty of examples of great fb teams that were way more defense that offense.

Respectfully the Mountain West isn't West, the Pacific coast is West. OrSt & WSU are West. Media market size is what pundits regularly name as the main reason neither schools were added to the B12. The misinformations here was based on both schools being rural, had small media markets. Neither schools Media market is actually where their physical campus is, their fanbases and alum base actually live in the 2 respective large urban cities - Seattle & Portland. OrSt actually has a larger alumni base than sister university U of Oregon. When both are properly considered their actual media markets are in the top 20 in the country, significantly ahead of many of the other 130+ CFB schools.
Secondly, coming from published results, Media market is not the best indicator of related media dollars, viewership is. In 2023 OrSt was 5th in the Pac12 and 20th in the country. WSU was 8th in the Pac12 and 42nd nationally. The other top 4 in the Pac12 were Colorado (Deion effect), 4th nationally,. USC 11th nationally, U of Wash, 12th nationally, U of Ore. 18th nationally. Thus, the top 5 are in the top 20 in the country, with WSU in the top 1/3 @ 42. Last BTW in the Pac12? Arizona, 71st nationally.
Seems to me with Texas and Oklahoma leaving the B12 would have wanted to backfill with a back to back top 20 team in the country that had higher viewership other than Colorado than the rest of the G5 and Pac12 teams brought in? Not to mention also outshining everyone else in the B12 aside from exiting Texas and Oklahoma.
I understand now why Arizona President doesn't want the Beavs and Cougs to join the B12 but I'm wondering how ESPN and Brent Yormark critically missed this?

In the 12 team playoff. Each conference automatically gets their champ in. There is no incentive for the Acc to implode. As it is almost every 12 team playoff spot would be filled by the P2 except the champ auto bids. No reason to leave for the Big 12, it's not happening.

FL State should not have to leave the ACC, instead the Playoff Committee should learn how to count wins and losses. 12-0 teams, such as Michigan and Washington are clear choices because of their perfect WIN records, not perfect games. Ugly win? AL winning against Auburn. More like Auburn throwing away a win. AL should have lost 2 games. Why can’t the Payoff Committee see that? They are bias against the ACC and sympathetic to Nick Saben’s whining his team is better when they lost against TX.

As for Utah, if Rising tries to run too much this season he will be out like the last couple of years for a good deal of time. He takes too much punishment by years end. Best example I can point to is the Rose Bowl against OSU. As for Arizona, they only beat the Utes due to Rising being out and massive injuries for Utah prior to the game in Tucson. Arizona never played Oregon. Half their defense hit the portal along with best RB; and its not over. To the NFL: 2nd best WR, 2nd best RB, Best TE, and best OL at tackle. Nobody behind Fifita with experience. Washington also flipped their freshman Four Star QB, Williams. Showed very good at the All American Bowl to. Then Fifita has to learn a new system and work with a different QB coach. For ASU, Daniels regressed when the QB coach, Likens, left. He was so bad and now won the Heisman? I'm not seeing this talk about them playing Oklahoma State in the championship either? It's a 7 to 8 win team. Tell me why not?

Honestly, yes FSU has had a couple down years since 2014, but our brand is big whether you hate us or love us. What happened this weekend shows that no matter what we do that being in the ACC we will never be treated fairly and will never be respected as a school or team. None of the other conferences are going to want our football team and moving to a crazy conference will possibly hurt our other sports teams. BIG 10 doesn’t want us messing with Michigan and Ohio State. SEC doesn’t want us messing with Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, or Texas A&M because it would be easier to steal some recruits. BIG 12 would be bad for FSU travel wise for all sports and fans. At this rate our only option would be to be independent.😢

I remain amazed at how dumbed down our society has become. In short, some time in the ~late 70s Jewish lawyers wanted to defend some Nazis in Illinois because their free speech, etc. rights were at risk. The local Jewish community knew that turning a blind eye will have much worse effects later. Few see things clearly these days.
Not expanding the playoff was a way to mitigate the effects of SEC bias, but now we see that wouldn't have worked.

Your heavy ACC depletion out to the P2 is commonly predicted and reasonable.
The additional scatter to the BIG12 serves no purpose. The Tier 2 won't have access to the Tier 1 playoff, and such a large and dispersed B12 won't have the gravity to remain stable.

If memory serves me correct, this is why they didn’t like the BCS because it was decided by a computer! Also, back in 2011 the two best teams in the conference *Alabama and LSU* which Alabama lost that year in regular season by 3 points and beat LSU in the championship 21-0. They said that year, we need people to pick the top 4 teams in the conference’s. That year they decided to go into a 4 best teams with a committee picking the teams. Yes Florida state won the first and last BCS championship game. Fast forward; now next year to keep the confusion down and not leave anyone out if you win your conference you’re in the 12 team playoffs. There will be 7 top extra teams to compete for a championship slot. But next year they will have the same argument with the 12th team. When does it end?

Nope. Events prove that not expanding was the right vote, but that assumed no CFP corruption.
If all the ACC and FSU knew going in was that FSU would be 1 of only 3 undefeated P5s, they would vote to keep at 4 all day every day. 1 of 4 is better than 1 of 12. Given the general reaction to the snub, few would have guessed that SEC bias would be so strong to overcome the constraints.

VaTech fan here. Thank you @domenicdurante966 for pointing out those facts about the ACC. I have been saying this same thing forever and especially lately following the FSU snub. Everyone conveniently ignores the facts and purely speaks from conjecture b/c most never watch ACC football. The fact that the ACC has 4 teams ranked compared to the 5 from the SEC, 4 from Big 10 and 3 from Big 12, and the ACC has a winning record against the SEC and Big 10, The ACC, Big 12 and SEC have 9 bowl eligible teams, and the Big 10 has 8 are all facts which prove the ACC isn't drastically weaker than any other conference--except for perception and perception is reality. GA Tech is a mid tier, 6-6 team in the ACC, that lost to GA, the #1 team in the country by 8 pts--(31-23), and FSU didn't "dominate" and just walk through the ACC as they pundits would have you believe. The bottom line here is the ACC doesn't have a product problem, it has a branding problem. I agree with most of this podcast, except for this flawed notion that the ACC is "weak" or "down". I was pulling for the ACC to somehow survive, but more and more, it's looking like that the writing is on the wall. I never considered the BIG 12 as a viable option, but after watching this episode, I think it could be a good look. Contrary to this host's opinion, the SEC and Big 10 both are interested in several ACC schools, according to different SEC and Big 10 podcasts I've watched. Remember most of the ACC schools are in the South and natural rivalries already exists. However, you can believe that Florida really doesn't want FSU and Miami in the SEC nor does South Carolina want Clem. VaTech, NC State and Louisville round out the top "Football first" schools in the ACC who are attractive to both the SEC and Big 10. Ga Tech, UNC and Virginia are of higher interest to the Big 10 because of ASU membership. This will be interesting to watch unfold.

Moving to the BIG12 would only worsen problems. It has no brand, image or face. Considered the option of last resort where the outcasts have congregated. Outside of TEXAS's role in that evolution, the BIG12 isn't to blame for this.
Perception isn't reality, but it does control behavior. Of the football P5s, the ACC is unique in that it was the only one that has no basketball peer in reputation or outcome, and that overshadowed any level of football success. Fairness isn't a controlling factor in situations like that. Not sure what branding efforts could have been effective. The failures of the MIAMI and (sorry) VATECH expansions have been crushing.
I consider VATECH a Tier 2 ACC flight risk. That would generally mean VATECH is looking at 3 different possible fates:
      a) Landing in the SEC and continuing to compete at the top level
      b) Staying in an ACC that has "only" lost ~4 current members and competing at the Tier 2 level in football
      c) Moving to the BIG12 and competing at the Tier 2 level in football
If teams like VATECH, PITT, NCSTATE decide to consolidate in the new BIG12, it's brand will be some hodgepodge group of scrappy competitors with various academic and overall sports ambitions. It would likely dominate the football Tier 2. There will be some designated rivals, but the rest of the schedule will mostly be relatively vanilla and non-regional. The ACC would rebuild as the group of private, more elite academic schools that also competes in Tier 2 football and with different overall athletic ambitions but with a stronger focus on non-revenue sports than the new BIG12.
The +3 suggests that the administrations of VATECH and the others do not want to go to the new Tier 2 BIG12 but prefer an academically branded rebuilt Tier 2 ACC with a strong non-revenue sport reputation. I don't have a position on what the active fans prefer.
