Thank you for the video of the Canning Stock Route, this brings back so many wonderful memories of my own trip (with a tour company and other people) on the Canning In 1992. So many wonderful places on the Canning, my favorite being the Derba Hills and Springs, near Lake Disappointment, and Wyndich Springs. I was lucky that that year on the southern half of the Canning had a lot of rainfall and so there were lovely wildflowers everywhere covering the landscape in beautiful colors. The northern half did not have the rainfall so I could see how the Canning would normally look. An unforgettable adventure and one that people should undertake if they can.
Hi Oliver. Thankyou for your comments. I agree. That country is like nothing else. My only regret is that I didn’t take it slower and see and enjoy more of if. Hopefully it won’t be changed by human habitation so that we can enjoy it again at some time in the future.
Great video,,, inspiration for all to do something this year 2021,,, because of Covid,, maybe the Canning stock route adventure, might get people up and out of the Suburbs and see this Great Southern Land, even if to just travel around their own State.. cheers mate.
Awesome mate..great video ..have you taken dog as well for the trip? ( Saw a dog standing next in first image shot .. wondering if it's allowed through CSR? ) If yes I'll take my boy as well
Naga A Thanks mate. Haha no that dog was random. It belongs to the person how took the photos at the NT border ( another traveler). The dog liked me for some reason. Not supposed to take dogs on the Canning however I did see one couple with a dog. They told me it kept the dingoes away.
Hi, I haven’t watched all your video but I’m wondering why you needed a trailer ? I’m not being argumentative or anything but as a one person trip, with a pretty good vehicle, why did you need it ? Im planning a CSR trip in a year or two with a petrol 4WD and I wouldn’t even consider a trailer. Just curious. Cheers !
Hi mate, I have the same trailer, although HEAVILY modified. It's even had a body and chassis extension. Brand new springs and new shocks fitted. I've not tested it yet, as it's getting some canvas work done on it. Id love to know what failed on your trailer so I can ensure I make plans Or even engineer out the weakness. Also, if youre on Facebook, there is a No5 ex army trailer page.
Nothing failed on the trailer. It’s pretty much unbreakable. The issue was that they are designed to carry a lot of weight and so the leaf spring are very rigid. I should have removed a leaf or two before I left to soften the ride. The Canning is very rough and so the trailer spent a lot of time air-born. This destroyed everything in it. Even steel Jerry cans. Some shock absorbers would have helped too. Sounds like your trailer is perfect for the job. Good luck.
Robert Di Donato, Sorry it took so long to reply. I left the trailer near Well 27 and it was picked up by a party going the opposite direction with an ex Army Unimog. Good trailer but I should have removed some leaves from the springs before I left.
Well if you have never done it maybe you should refrain from giving advice to those who have. I met with track a track maintenance bloke at well 46 who advised me that he has done the CSR 12 times and each time was with a trailer. It’s fine to take a trailer if it’s set up properly and especially if you are not traveling SOLO and have some to help you over the bigger softer dunes.
I like your stills in your video but please NOT that bloody rotten music, I did not hear anything of that back in 1984 when I travelled around that beautiful area too age 23. And no fancy bitumen rtracks anywhere in those days
Thanks for your comments Maurice. That was the first video I ever made and it was all shot on my iPhone and edited on free software. I agree. The music is off putting.
Thanks for the comment John. If you are referring to the trailer, I passed it on to a Unimog travelling in the opposite direction. So, I didn’t leave anything behind. Perhaps you could ask questions before making assumptions in the future.
Awsome video with amazing pictures
Great video Steve.
It's amazing that you did this tough trip solo - a great achievement.
I can't wait for the report on the next trip.

@@stevenightingall4wdreconau599 awesome, thanks for the reply. And the video.
I know it's been a long time since my last comment. But we are heading off in June for our Canning adventures.
My comment wasn't a criticism, just pointing out what I have read in all the literature that is around
Why did Jerry cans burst? plastic or metal?
Steel Jerry’s. The lids burst off them from the extreme bouncing around in the trailer.
Thank you@@stevenightingall4wdreconau599
What happened to the trailer?

You shouldn't take trailers on the CSR
Have you ever done the CSR?
Doing this year mate and it is recommended that trainers are not taken

Shame you couldn’t bring your rubbish out with you.
Thanks for the comment John.
