When davy came ashore again he cut his own heart out so that he couldn't feel betrayed or heartbroken again he locked it in a chest, buried it and never went back to retrieve it ever

It works because it is both loving and his curse when in context.
And the way Bill Nighy’s voice captures the way he realises this, knowing that he loves her still, but still hates her for
what she did. Hates himself for not being able to let go, and finally realised why she did it.
He got some closure, and realised that because of his heartbroken actions against her while justified, ensured that he would never have a happy ending.

No man nor woman nor child can love a Goddess truly. And Davy Jones is lost. But for certain, you have to be lost to find the places can't be found; otherwise, everyone would know where it was.

The cruelest thing about this scene aside from the obvious emotional torment was Calypso temporarily restoring Jones' human form. He spent presumably centuries in his mutated state, long enough to at least become acclimated to it. But to have his humanity returned for those bare few seconds only to have it taken away again reminded him again of what he was... And what he lost.

Well given his accents and localization I doubt he was transforming mutated for centuries maybe one given the way Legends and lower conversed but the modern certainly when we get to the Age of Enlightenment what is Scottish and with his Scottish accent Davy Jones couldn't have been that far removed from the land of Alba I really wish they would delve into his backstory more when he was in Scotland when did he leave what was his career how did he become a pirate what were the circumstances of his encounter with calypso I'm of the opinion that Davie Jones was akin to Jack Sparrow Will Turner Hector Barbossa Norrington all of them he was the hero until he fell in love with a goddess who is if anything other than righteous

      @TheDogGeneral Год назад +6

@El-Silver correct correct on that arcade I mean the inclusion of King George the second in the franchise does sort of narrowing the timelines but I think the Dutchman's far older than Davy Jones given that I think Calypso already had possession of the Dutchman and merely placed in Davy Jones's charge
But said it's very one-dimensional with the characters it kind of takes me back to Darth Vader he was very one-dimensional in the first Star Wars film we have some idea of his past life before the events of the film but nothing was really hammered out until the franchise progress and was expanded but I think Davy Jones what's the crossroads of all the characters his emotional torment was so great he had to cut his heart out
Like quaritch the Avatar franchise and Vader from Star Wars Davy Jones backstory I feel like he's very compelling and rich in his own right and if they were to bring him back it would be the buku Big Daddy of the sea looking to take revenge

The sea can be calm and beautiful sure but it can also be violent and harsh, that's honestly what makes his final moments beautiful in a sense.
Davy Jones could never truly be with Calypso so long as he lived, in his final moments when he heard the music box and died falling into the abyss he fell into the sea he fell into calypso he'll be with her forever in the very sea itself in the end he got what he wanted.

I love how they used different voices for Davy the Sea Devil and Davy the loving sailor. I love that they actually show the distinction. Like when Calypso temporarily reverted his form back to its original self, and he gasps for air in those short, quick breaths, as if he'd been suffocating for a long time.
And to think that even when the Sea Devil returned and was this close to choking her out, he couldn't bring himself to do it and leaves, but he still couldn't fight back his true self when he speaks what has always been true:
"My heart will always belong to you"
This makes it even more tragic that both of the Davys needed to die to be with Calypso again.

I think a beautiful detail that when Calypso plays her locket it sounds almost perfectly in tune, because she didn't want t keep thinking about him after what he did to her, but when Davey's starts playing you don't need perfect pitch to tell that it's out of tune, and noticeably flat. I think that this is such a cool detail because you can tell that Davey has played that Music box so much that it it getting flatter and flatter, since he can't stop thinking about Calypso. The like "my heart will always belong to you" is the payoff from this little detail and I think it' such an amazing piece of development with such a simple detail.

I hope this helps, though a movie would be awesome:
Calypso was a Pagan Deity (a cross between her Greek incarnation and Lovecraftian Old Ones) and Davy Jones was an ancient sea captain and mariner, maybe a pirate but probably an adventurer and prospector, charting the New World centuries before the events of the movie trilogy.
Calypso's power was a dominion over the seas, the exact level is unknown but it's implied that one of her tasks was her oversight of those who died on the Oceans and she was more than just the form we see in the movie (shape-shifting and such). Davy Jones found her in the new world (Islands, Carribean, Bermuda Triangle, fuck it if I know) and fell deeply in love with her, and her with him. It's important to remember that like most Gods in myth, she loved him a Goddess does, and maybe her ability to comprehend the emotions and expectations of Jones were different since one could argue that she is on an almost literal level IS the Seas (although she might also just be a fickle manipulative cunt if the Odyssey is anything to go by...).
This does however support the theory I've seen once or twice crop up that she was always with him in a way as he sailed and "lived" within and with her always, it also akin's Jones' almost hypnotically induced love of her with that of Sailors and their sometimes passionate (or even obsessive) love of the Ocean. It also aligns with a fair amount of Greek and European tales that all warn of the perils of dealing with the Gods and the tragedy that befalls their love due to the difference in their stations.
Romantic/Obsession relationships later, Calypso elects Jones as her champion or Agent, instilling in him great powers and binding him to both her and the seas. He gains great knowledge of the occult, access to ancient magics and an understanding of the divine (well her at least), plus effective immortality. For a decade he saw to his task and ferried those who died at sea with his ship, the Flying Dutchman, and made sure they passed into the afterlife as the natural order demanded. He did this under the condition that, after his decade of service was past, he would meet her again and they would be together forever (poor crewmen are just along for the ride at this point). He is not a squidface at this stage.
Time rolls up and she's a no-show, he probably doesn't get completely enraged and try to kill her right off the bat since she and him are linked and she has power over him (literally and emotionally) but eventually her grows very fucking bitter, and honestly, I can't really blame him. There may have been a substantial amount of time that passed between him getting ditched and him having her bound however, and it's how I always understood it. Since he can't directly "kill" or imprison her, he instead rounds up the first few pirate houses of the time period and strikes a bargain with them; in exchange for completing the ritual that will bind her in a fixed form (probably the one he met her as) and vow to never have release her, they will be blessed and have dominion over the seas. They accept and perform the ritual to bind her in a "tortured" state, for a shape-shifting goddess whose entire shtick is to ebb, flow and shift like the sea, being "still" is hell.
He keeps up his end of the bargain, technically. Without the fickle nature of Calypso, the seas are tamable and the Pirate lords of Old prosper, it's quite clear that they were far more organized and cohesive back then (given the codex) but slowly fragmented, the rules becoming "guidelines" and infighting being frequent. As the centuries pass, Jones becomes further corrupted, his physical form and spiritual essence warping into a tentacle-hentai worthy figure, and instead of safely ferrying the dead as was intended, he binds them to his increasingly twisted vessel and grows his crew, offering a way out of death for those that are dead, or dying, at sea (those poor sods that left with Jones on his voyages way back in the day). He also has a big pet octopus and cyclically can't go on land except once a decade (the anniversary of his betrayal, yikes).
Dead Men tell no tales suggests that the Dutchman actually follows a set course in its search for souls to add to it's crew (or ferry to the afterlife).

Honestly, I feel like people often misunderstand Calypso. She's not human, she's a goddess; she doesn't think like a human, she certainly doesn't act like a human - and you can't really hold her to the same human standards. Lemme explain.
Gods have all the time in the world, so, therefore, waiting ten years wouldn't be that much of a big deal for them. Hell, it probably would only feel like a passing second to them, in the grand scheme of things.
For mortals like us on the other hand, ten years is a very long time; and though Jones did become immortal through his duty to the Dutchman-- he still kept a mortal's mentality. By the tone of his voice when he confronts her, you can tell that ten years still very much feels like an eternity to him, or at least it had back then.
I personally think that these differences in time, and the understanding of it, is why their relationship failed so badly.
Since they were both now immortal, in her eyes, Calypso believed that they had all the time in the world to be together - and as previously stated, ten years to her wasn't that long anyway - so what did it matter that she wasn't available to him right then?
Well, I don't think that properly explains it.
For a better example, think of it like this: you schedule a date, but later you realize that it's not a good time and you can't make it, so you do the obvious and reschedule it to a later day - no big deal. In my speculations, that is how it was for her-- a mundane rescheduling of a promised meeting. She was going to meet him again eventually, just not on that day. And she probably thought, now that Jones wasn't bound by time, that he would understand and go about the next ten years with a smile on his face knowing she'd show up next time.
Of course, as previously stated once again, that didn't work out---Jones did not share the same mentality. He was once mortal and had only been immortal for a decade. Ten years was a lifetime to him, and her not showing up was an unforgivable act of betrayal, and that's where they fell apart.
And... that's honestly the best way I can put all of this. A final word, before I wrap things up: I'm not saying Calypso is blameless in this situation. Nor am I saying that this is Jones' fault for choosing to love a goddess such as her without seeing this outcome as a possibility. This is all just my silly speculations and theories.... and really, an attempt to get inside Calypso's confusing head.
Anyways, thanks for reading this probably unclear mess. This took me too long.

It's more like a guy who has a strict and busy work schedule, sets up a date with his girlfriend who's a "dramatic" woman that's he's still in love with. (and she knows and agrees to) he goes the extra mile booking a restaurant or something making sure it's going to be great. Later when its time he finds out he's been completely ghosted,Later he gets a text saying "My bad but you know how I am sometimes". That in term causes the guy to become completely toxic.
Going by the movie she's cruel, evil, indifferent, unpredictable and even kind/loving all at the same time it seems.
Both are at fault this was a relationship that most likely would have ended up where it did in the films. It's pretty depressing knowing Davy Jones probably hates himself because he can't help but love some entity who's incapable of loving him back the same way.

Also, Davy didn’t just fall in love with this mortal form of calypso, he loves her for what she is: the SEA. During the maelstrom, he is the FIRST person to recognize who is the cause of the storm, and he comes alive when the storm starts. What I love about this scene is that, at least from my point of view, Davy Jones loved the "concept" of Calypso, not who and what she really was. She says it herself, this "single form". She is as much the sea and everything that makes it, as she is the mortal form she takes. Davy Jones loved her, but I think he never fully grasped just who and what she was. When she says "Cut off from all the things that I love, from you" I get the feeling that even though Davy Jones wanted to see her as a person and didn't, she was *always* with him. In the waves, the sea creatures, storms- she was there. But she's Calypso, she doesn't exist how you expect or may want. That maybe this entire time she was with him, in little ways- but never behaving the way he would want or expect. leaving Davy Jones sadly torn. In love with her, but mortal in many ways and never truly able to grasp or come to term with what Calypso was. There's a doctor who scene that's rather relevant here; the reunion of the the
Twelfth Doctor and his wife, River Song. To many, The Doctor is more than a extradimensional wanderer. He's a nomadic god, with the power to shape all of time and space should he wish two. River on the other hand... she's just an archeologigist from the future, merely human. Yet, she's the wife of a Time Lord One of the very, very last ones left, in fact. She loves him and he loves her, but she doesn't know that. In her mind, she is just a human and though she loves the Doctor, she feels that its not mutual. In her mind, she's just a person and he's the Doctor. When a villain attempts to lure the Doctor to them, she insists that despite being a known consort of the Doctor, the Doctor doesn't love her and never really has. In her own words, "When you love the Doctor, its like loving the stars themselves. You don't expect a sunset to admire you back."
This reflects Calypso and Davy Jones' relationship in a way. Calypso is the embodiment of the sea itself but like you said: Jones didn't understand that. He loved Calypso as one person would love another, unable to realize the nature of what exactly it was that he loved in the first place. In other words, he expected a sunset to admire him back. The story of Davy Jones and Calypso is fantastic, and as someone aspiring to be a writer, I love it. If I can one day write to this level, I will be elated.

If you think of it. Davy Jones himself is the physical manifestation of the women he both loves and hates.
The octopus is the enemy of the crab. Octopuses kill and eat Crustaceans
Calypso as sacred symbol is the *crab*. So his hatered and heartbreak of Tia molded him into the very creature that hates her. But he's still part crab because somewhere, inside he still has love for Tia Dalma/Calypso, hence the claw/leg.
Does Disney plan it? Or make it up as they go along. Certain blew me mind!

You could see it in that moment, he still knew - no matter how much he tried to deny it or feign coldness - he still loved her, dearly. The best part of this is that Davy Jones never truly realised what Calypso gave him when she tasked him with the duty of looking after those who died at sea.
Davy Jones was a mortal man, and Calypso the goddess of the ocean itself. His life would have been perilously short, but in making him the guardian of her dead, she made him as ageless as she was.
Moreover, she granted him a life with her true form. Ten years travelling the beautiful oceans that made up her true being. He was beside her the entire time, but thought only of the woman, the human form.
She gave him the gift of an eternity with her, and he squandered it because he couldn't see it for what it was.

Davy Jones 100% needs his own movie where he falls in love with Calypso, and looks after those who died at sea for 10 years and then at the end of the movie we see him happily waiting for Calypso, but she doesn’t show and then we see him scream in pain as the sun sets and break down in tears. That would be the most depressing movie ever and I want- no.. I NEED TO SEE IT!

To be honest, Davy Jones never came across as a villain, rather than an antagonist. Sure, he has done horrible things in his life as Captain of the Flying Dutchman, but before that, he still carried out his duty ferrying the dead and was never repaid for it the way he wanted to be, hence why he became so cruel. Yet even then, he's cruel yet fair, vicious yet lawful, and let it never be said he isn't a man of his word. He's only really a 'villain' to us because Jack made a deal with him to raise the Pearl from the depths and knew the consequences of such a bargain, only to try and evade it. I feel like Davy is one of those villains who you feel a natural empathy for, rather than have the film try and force it upon you.

      @joshuakim5240 3 года назад +112

Don't forget how Jones bargained with Jack TWICE and each time upheld his end of the bargain (raised the Black Pearl for Jack, then gave him a 3 day buffer to collect 99 souls). Jones is technically always the more honorable man despite being the antagonist, which is fascinating and a great twist.

The great thing about this trilogy is that no one is truly a villain. Norrington is a man tasked with hunting down pirates so that the seas will remain safe for merchant traders. Barbossa is a man who only wants to feel human again, and so does whatever he can to do so. Davy Jones is a man who has been betrayed by the one thing he ever truly loved, and so reacts out of spite towards his situation. Hell, even Cutler Beckett, the one guy who actually feels like a “villain”, really isn’t. He does what he does because, as he states, it’s “just good business”.

It's expanded upon more in the novels but the whole reason Beckett hates pirates to such a degree is because he was once captured by pirates and put to work on their ship doing "commoners work". Jack just cemented his beliefs to a larger degree.

I’m a little shocked I don’t see people talk about this scene more. You can just feel that they had a romance and want to be back together despite knowing how unlikely it is. The way Calypso stops her music box only for Jones to start his. The melody being the same tune he plays on his pipe organ showing how he kept her memory alive…And how normal Jones’ voice sounds when he says goodbye, almost like being near his love brought back just a small ounce of his old self.

I would pay to see a prequel trilogy focusing these two characters. A tragic lovestory dramedy set in the PotC universe.
    First movie:
Young Davy Jones. Not all unlike Will Turner, brave and brazen. A grand adventure that ultimately leads to him meeting Calypso and the movie ends with them in each other’s arm, while their foreboding tragic love theme plays.
    Second movie:
A darker tone. Misfortune seems to follow our anti-hero. He’s now charged with ferrying those who die at sea. Nearly 10 years have past. Adventure revolves around Jones desperately trying to reach their designated meeting place (A beach similar to the one where Will Turner and Elisabeth Swan meet.) Calypso is not there.
    Third movie:
Jones cuts out his heart and gets corrupted and undead. Somehow the cursed Aztek gold treasure plays a huge role in the story, as does Barbossa. The Brethren Court binds Calypso under Jones’ guidance. Movie ends with setting up for Curse of the Black Pearl, and a cameo of Jack Sparrow meeting with Tia Dalma in her shack im the mangrove swamp.

I think Jones decided to trust her again after this scene. Him asking her what she'll do to her captors was his way of finding out if she knew he was the original one and that's why he looks relieved when she tells him the brethren court. He realised she doesn't know, so he wants to start afresh, without ever telling her the truth...
And that's why he screams after he realised Calypso was free. In his mind, Calypso didn't know he was the one who betrayed her and thus, he felt betrayed because she didn't aid him in the battle, as promised.

Deep down Davy jones still cared deeply for Tia Dalma (Calypso), even though he had lost his humanity and cut out his own heart to serve as the grim reaper of the sea. While her music box sounded perfect his sounded much different, likely from countless years of playing the music box as the only thing he had left of the woman he loved. To see her one final time and learn the truth of why she broke his heart after waiting 10 years to come to shore and be reunited with his love.

  • @lukethomas.125

This scene is probably my favorite in the entire franchise. Davy Jones, a lonely sailor who fell in love with the sea, and paid for it in unexpected ways. When he first met and fell in love with Caplyso, she entrusted him with the task of ferrying the souls of the dead to the afterlife, and gave him The Flying Dutchman to complete his task, she swore that after 10 years, they would see each other for one day on dry land before he returned to his duty. When he returned after 10 years at sea, she was not there to greet him. Believing that Calypso had betrayed him, he turned the Pirate Bretheren Court against her and imprisoned her in human form as Tia Dalma. Later, out of despair and guilt for what he had done, Davy Jones cut out his heart and placed it in a chest (in doing so binding himself to the Flying Dutchman) Over the time he was at sea, his physical appearance changed from the sailor he once was, into what we see now. The irony here being that Davy Jones brought all of this pain onto himself, demonstrated by how Calypso briefly changed him back into his original form.
