In this video I am racing the legendary McLaren MP4/8 Formula One car at the 1993 layout of Interlagos in Brazil. This classic F1 race showcases many of Automobilista 2's best features, and ranks among the best single player races I've done.

I always enjoyed the AI in AMS2, but now they are just something else. Was doing a WEC race at Silverstone with the DPi, Thunderflash LMP2s, and GTEs, and man did I have a battle. Just a 30 minutes dog fight in the RSR against a C8R. We were going side by side through Abbey and Copse every other lap, and while we did trade paint, we never took each other out. Just a back and forth dog fight. I've never had an experience like that against an AI. I've had some fun battles against AI in iRacing and ACC, but nothing like that before. That battle was better than all but a few battles I've had in iRacing against real players. I've never felt confident enough against AI to send it though Abbey just to have the AI stick it out and hold position before. Was just insane.
That’s awesome! Just reading this made me want to jump in for more AMS2 action
it seems we played different games because so far I don't see that AMS2 AI is so good as you are trying to convince us about...
Oh man, I just bought the game and I forgot those "immersive" exacerbated camera settings you can have with the madness engine. It is so amazing to activate all the G-effect, tilting, the helmet and so on with those HiTech cars. I love this update, Reiza really nailed those Senna-era F1 (all the 6 gens of that era). For that alone AMS2 is worth the money now.
Today I started a Race on Long Beach with heavy rain and 30 cars on the grid. This game is so beautiful its amazing, so much potential, cannot think about possibilities for a career mode..
I did the Formula Retro Gen 1 at the Nurburgring in the rain, man it makes you appreciate this game a lot when there’s an entire grid of Formula cars spraying water everywhere
The racing life mod is a good career option for now ( in game would be better ofc)
@@Bambeakz is it updated to the new cars and tracks?
@@fatih_a No idea. I am rebuilding my racerig so i have not done any racing for a few weeks
Realising how little I know about Brazilian motorsport (well okay, probably all motorsport). Yesterday I learnt that Nelson Piquet and Senna is/was Brazilian (and also that Reiza are). And watching this video I learnt that the same applies to Interlagos :)
The new update reinvigorated my passion for sim racing. I was burnt out after having multple issues with online drivers. The AI in AM2 is a breath of fresh air in my opinion. Some of the best wheel to wheel racing you can experience in a sim in my opinion.
I don't know what you are talking about... I have just tried AMS2 after new update and racind with AI is still weird and AI feels artificial. It seems like we played different games or what... but really I still don't understand why people praise offline experience in AMS2 so much while it's still not even on old GP4 level??
Amazing update. Also, i like how smooth is your talk when you're driving aswell your driving style. Very pleasing both. Keep doing those videos.
Thank you so much!!!
@@SimRacing604 The Barry White of Sim-Racing
Nice driving Mike. I was halfway though watching an old video of yours about how well AMS2 handles dynamic weather when the notification for this video came on. And this video demonstrated that fact very well again :)
Thanks so much! These videos are huge fun to make.
If people have not tried AMS 2 with the changes they are missing out. I love these cars (MP4 1993 etc) but they are too fast for my poor eyesight. Keep up the good work Mike...
Thanks so much!
Just bought it. Out of interest, which cars are you driving? Thanks.
I tried it and don't find it so great as people here talking about... well it's better than rfactor 2 for example or some other racing games but as for my opininon racing with AMS2 AI still feels weird somehow...
I was an early adopter of AMS 2. I didn't get on with it because I wasn't able to race AI in the rain or at night, in VR. Once I went VR, it's really hard to go back to a screen. Now, it seems like this is an entirely new game, from the last time I played. Everything seems to work in VR using OpenVR instead of SteamVR. The physics and force feedback feel really good too. I'll stick to iRacing for online racing for now, but I think I've finally found my go to sim for setting up casual AI races. If the competition system for AMS turns out to be good, I'll probably be online with it too.
The brazilian GP was held at the end of summer here. And that’s when we have the worst storms till today
Am I missing something or did Mike skip using the active suspension DRS altogether?
Great to watch. This is the period I started to watch F1. It's funny how the car sponsors get as close to the real deal without infringing copyrights. I recognise all of them. I played Grand Prix 2 for hundreds of hours, which was based on the 94 season.
BTW, you know the name "R Barrichello" because he's a real racer and competed in F1 for many years.
Gotta say, the handling model of this game is superb.
I haven't played to much of this game yet because I'm waiting for the arrival of my new wheel/pedal ect. But in the meantime, it's great to watch someone competently playing. I love the AI. Can't wait to crash and burn when the wheel get here!! :) I found nothing boring about the video. Great stuff.
Great race! AMS2 is amazing.
I was so impressed with the update I bought all the dlc. Loving this game right now
Got and played this game last night. first time.... THIS GAME IS AWESOME! I can't believe I have skimmed over it for so long. Well maybe it's the last update for it....but it's visuals are stunning! I run basically maxed out with MSAA low and SS on too. Tinkering around trying to find best setting but last night spa at sunset was mind blowing!
Had my wife and I on the edge of our seats for those last few laps. Great driving!
In the heat of battle it is so easy to forget the DRS. 🤔
Been looking forward to your take on the new update. Thanx, Mike! BTW, how come I never see anyone race at the Ecuadorian track, Yuacocha (or something like that)? It's a great course, if you haven't tried it yet.
Without doubt, AMS 2 single player is for me the best on any sim, it has reached a state that makes it a pure racing experience. You said it spot on Mike, it's pure racing. No longer do you have to brake meters before them, they will now brake as late as you and for me thats a game changer, plus they will race you harder. The two High tech classes are superb. Well done to Reiza. Was backer way back from the start and boy has it been worth the wait
Default+ FFB is a game changer . Huge improvement
How do I activate Default + FFB?
@@gingersnaps7186just go to FFB settings, should be right next to default
Launch control is also a new awsome feature. This car has it implemented, should've used it and you should talk about it its really cool and yes the auto shift feature is adjustable via the in game menu. It's implementated with launch control
I can't stop playing! It's awesome!
Hey Dan! Thanks for stopping by man. I’ve been enjoying a few of your videos lately. Great to have you back making content.
Thanks Dude! I'm thrilled that you are absolutely killing it on RUclips man! Can't wait to watch you cross over 100k! @@SimRacing604
I've played 1500 hours of Assetto and own a Fanatec 12nm DD, handbrake, shifter, V3 pedals and a gaming PC that I bought specifically for AC...but I can't race for sh*t. That's because those 1500 hours on Assetto have all been spent going sideways. I got my Fanatec setup purely for drifting, after falling love with drifting in Forza Horizon 4 and 5. So even though I have all this drfting-based muscle memory for left foot braking to tighten angle, forcing oversteer through left foot braking, countersteering, whel sawing, throttle control; all this muscle memory built up over three years of drifting in Assetto(and a little in BeamNG), still I've no real idea how to translate it into racing. I played a little ACC the other day and realised that left foot braking while drifting translates pretty well in trail braking, but that doesn't have much of a single player so there's not much compelling me to continue.
What I really want is a sim racer that has a proper, interesting single player, so that I can learn how to translate what I know from drifting into racing, and learn how to race, how to trail brake properly, get a better feel for racing lines, learn these famous racing tracks, get a better feel for stopping distances, etc.
Long story short...does Automobilista 2 fit that bill?.
Bought ams2 at the weekend. Really enjoying it so far.
As a starting point from somebody who got into ams2 since early access; can't believe how good the gt1 and gt3 feel with this build. Borderline unrecognizable.
For seat of the pants racing try the formula junior and formula trainer.
The new formula hightech2, the Bennetton and McLaren should be a good starting point to get into the serious open wheel stuff and still be nicely managable.
Maybe a little more obscure; the Streetcars McLaren F1 is great now imo(was a mess some builds ago)
The RSR in the gte class is widely lauded as one of the best cars in the title.
The Brazilian stock cars, all the generations? Which this game is kind of an evolution of in a way, great and rather unique cars, and you can drive them on the real tracks they race on irl!
Have fun!
@@frankdiehl8749 Thanks for that Frank. I bought the obvious base game plus season pack so don't have the Formula Hitech yet. Mostly been driving Formula Vee but I gave the Brazilian Stock Cars (2019 maybe) a go earlier and that was fun. edit: And I'll give those other suggestions a go as well, thanks :)
@@frankdiehl8749 Just watched a video on the Formula Trainer. Definitely got to give that a go.
DRS is your friend :D You have been racing shorthanded the whole time Mike. Great video though.
Great racing. I too canceled my iRacing account (too dang expensive) a few years ago and never looked back. There are so many options for single player and online racing these days.
Mike, your videos are always awesome. The AI in single player mode is incredible. Its like racing online just a ton easier to get up and racing almost instantly. Still think my RFuktor FFB file is better than default+, however the physics and updates make this FFB shine even more.
Really loved reading this comment. Thank you so much!!
I personally think the biggest benefit to perfecting single player AI would be that you can enjoy it as much as online and not having to deal with the frustration of those select few that deliberately drives dirty.
The point at which AI _really_ learns how to manage and control traction loss, so that it can not only control the back end while trail braking but actually throw it out and drift, that would be huge. Really good racing AI that feels human would be a huge step forward, but AI that can _drift_ would be an even bigger deal for drifters, because of how crucial it is to have a competent partner when tandeming.
I've never seen sim AI that can drift, not in any game. Never mind sim AI that can react to your drifting and modulate what they're doing, try and get tighter and even bump your doors. It surely has to be computationally impossible right now, or else someone would have done it. Sophy can slip angle drift, but that's not the same thing, not even close
Nice race! glad you like the new update especially the external sounds
Turn fuel useage off and the AI are fairer to race against. Their lap times are not affected by how much fuel they carry, but the player is.
Bleh, this should be fixed
Mp4/8 had traction control and active suspension. It also had an auto downshift for some corners not upshift. (Auto upshift is useless for a professional racecar driver).
you are blessing us with so much content!
That was a joy to watch, Mike!
Thanks so much!!
So much fun just watching you almost win it.
Mike, you're definitely a better driver! I can tell AMS2 is a blast for you as well
I wish also rfactor2 had some updates regarding AI, they seems "lifeless". I just fell in love with BTCC right now. I might try automobilista 2 after seeing this video. :D
looks and sounds fantastic
Great driving mate!
Thanks so much!
Man I have to get a PC. I got the ps5 before I got a sim rig and into racing. Love how this looks. But I do absolutely love ea wrc think God it's on console
I had my first full course yellow in a race against the AI and it was the AI... Yea they are much more like real drivers now. Have you tried the GTE Porsche 911? Such a blast to drive.
Group C AI balance is what I'm really curious about. IIRC the vette was really overpowered.
Othet than that, I'm still hopeful for the Mazda 787 to round out Group C, it's too good of a class to be incomplete!
The only problem with adding the 787b is that was a 1991 car while the cars represented in AMS2 are from 1989. Plus, the 787b would be woefully slow compared to the other Group C cars unless Reiza BoPs it to be faster. But yeah, some more cars would be cool like the Jaguar XJR9.
@@Logan912 Mazda 767B then, there are many to choose from. I love seeing the Corvette GTP, but clearly the BOP wasn't an issue when that was added.
To be fair, I'm not aware of any sims that have a thorough Group C class, even including mods. PCars 2 may have had the most available iirc.
The Jag would be great!
I know GPLaps was talking about doing a career mode series in this, but if anyone finds a good career mode series on this, please let me know! 😅
Definitely agree. The new update and enjoyment to be had in AI races is a welcome change. Are you a default + or custom user ?
The update is great but they didnt add championship presets for the new cars
Nice video and very topical Mike. Would you mind sharing how to get the "radar" (green shape on the dash with grey shape representing car alongside) - also the "one length back" live commentary. Thanks
Those are new options in the settings. I believe they came with the original 1.5 update.
Excellent
I’ve found the ai has developed a habit of coming back onto the track through you and turning in on your rear that it didn’t before but I’m sure they’ll tune that one out. Otherwise it’s very much improved in almost all classes.
Nice race Mike. Doesn't the Gen 2 model of the McLaren have the DRS feature?
Hows AMS2 on controller? My DD broke so for now i've been playing AC on controller until I buy a new one. The more I watch AMS2 lately the more I wanna give it a try
I don't think he was sat QUITE that low 😂
Where are you getting the tuning setups from? Are the Leaderboards setups ready yet?
Not playing AMS2 in VR is a sin and those partaking in the pancake view should be mocked, lol.
I noticed you didn't use DRS at all, was that a choice?
DRS was introduced in Formula One in 2011
17 years too early for DRS 😅
@@jimkarakatsanis7640There is a Drag Reduction System on these cars though. Because of the active suspension they designed a system that lifts the car off the ground to generate less drag. It is put down as DRS in the game systems.
hi , im having a issue in online lobbies where the screen freezes for 3/5 seconds , i hear the car still driving , any help/fix?
Hey Mike, great video. Doesnt that Mclaren have DRS tho?
I was about to comment, he wasn't using it.
all sunshine and lollypops, but "where the lemans track"?
Does AMS2 have mechanical failures?
Whats the difference between 91 and 93 Interlagos?
Cosmetic, as far as I can tell. Maybe some road surface changes, but the layout remains the same.
Did I misheard, or did ams2 add the spotter?
It’s a somewhat new add to the title. I believe it was added in v1.5
How are you getting yellow and green flags? I must be doing something wrong?
It depends on the racing action. The AI seems more prone to mistakes in this version of AMS2. If they crash, it should throw a yellow flag, and then green flag when racing resumes.
Do you get this with the regular game or do you have to buy season pass?
For this particular race you’d need the Formula Hi-Tech DLC and Classic Track Pack pt2 DLC, but you could race the same vintage F1 cars at modern Interlagos with the base game.
What's that circle icon bottom left on the speedo for, is it new?
Launch Control I believe but not tested it yet. I think it has issues though.
Can you share gameplay settings
Do we need to delete the AMS2 documents/settings folder after this update?
No setup was reset by Reiza
These cars looks to have way too much low speed grip compared to onboards of this race in reality
So I LOVE AMS2 but it has been a while since I have raced,,,been using iRacing. Now for some reason AMS2 feels like I an racing on ICE. Its the funny that people use to say about iRacing. I have to think I have some settings wrong but even TRYING to race in AMS 2 is an absolute CHORE! Any throttle spins the car and just about any brake is not enough. Yes Iu have checked the driver aides but maybe I need even more? Makes no sense....a buddy and I use to play together constantly....now it's like I am driving on a GD ice rink!!! Any help would be great guys....I love AMS2 but as it's set it's literally unplayable!
I heard the FFB is still floaty and worse than age old Assetto Corsa.
In no way, shape, or form is it worse than Assetto Corsa. The only sim that has better FFB is rFactor 2, and even that’s negligible.
@@Logan912idk man. There's something really off-putting about the AMS 2 handling. It was great on the original AMS and I love it to death, and I want to love ams2 as well but the floaty cars keep making it worse.
I hope Ian Bell of Slightly Mad Studios has permanent regrets for how badly he messed up the Project Cars series considering what Reiza has done with it in AMS2.
*CAMPINI.*
hey are you interested in doing some casual games ,i m looking to find some friends to race online pvp when im free. let me know if your intrested,im from Calgary Canada btw. Thanks
Hey there in Calgary! I would love to be able to race with others online, but unfortunately I’m very time limited these days. Hopefully one day in the future I’ll be able to join.
I'm fairly sure these cars never had automatic transmissions. My understanding is that they were a normal flappy paddle shifter with up/down clicks required. The fully auto systems didn't arrive in F1 until a few years later.
For this reason, I turned off the automatic shifter.
If anyone knows othewise, please share :)
Yep. Confirmed. Definitely not automatic, but semi-automatic.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams_FW15C
"Williams 6-speed sequential semi-automatic"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLaren_MP4/8
"McLaren transverse 6-speed semi-automatic sequential"
The Williams and McLaren could be used full auto, auto up manual down or manual manual.
The rf2 version of the same McLaren Mike is using here has the same settings.
F1 2022 CARS are horrible to drive post update.
hmm, to me the they are slightly better. They were never on racesim studio formula hybrid level though, not even close.
