I've just downloaded the trial to compare to my copy of Topaz Gigapixel AI version 6.0.0 (latest version as of this comment). I tested them with a variety of images and contrary to what this video concludes, Topaz won every time hands down. Not even 1 image was contested. ON1 produces weird fractals at 4x upscale and doesn't remove noise while Gigapixel AI produces clean details, especially in areas like grass, leaves, fur etc and it also removes the noise and JPEG artifacts at the same time for silky smooth backgrounds. I would say currently ON1's AI upscaler is on par with Gigapixel AI from 2 years ago. BTW, the best models in Gigapixel AI for 95% of the images are "Standard" and "Low Resolution". I prefer them to Lines even for architecture photography. I will be keeping an eye on ON1, but so far their AI upscaler is still not up to par. They should revise their pricing as Gigapixel AI is superior and cheaper. The most I would pay for it right now is probably $60.
Not to mention if you buy Topaz, you get a year of updates, major or minor. With On1 every update seems to be considered major and you have to purchase again! The On1 interfaces seem better than Topaz, but in the two apps of each I have purchased, the Topaz results seem slightly better.
I own both Topaz and ON1, and while I do appreciate anything both companies make, they're both sub-par compared to online offerings which yield much better results, particularly with images containing human faces.
Thanks, Jim...I have On1Photo RAW 2022 and am looking forward to the Resize upgrade. Learned a lot on how to utilize On1 Resize from this presentation!!
Hello Jim. I also got my full copy of Resize ai. I am very impressed. I discovered that upscaling without additional sharpening gives me the best result. Import the upscaled photo by resize ai into Topaz sharpen ai for amazing results.
I did go over to On1 Resize and the castle side by side sample Topaz Gigapixel AI looked better. On1 Resize had some artifacts and was bending some lines. Topaz Gigapixel AI was softer but it did not have the painted look. All the other examples on On1 Resize looked better then Topaz Gigapixel AI.
Thanks for the feedback and yep as I say in the video, your mileage may vary. But I am finding On1 does an amazing job most of the time, and certainly fits my workflow preferences better too. Thanks for watching.
Hi Jim; Another great review, but I do have a couple comments. I own both ON1 Photo Raw and the independent modules. As you may recall I migrated over 100K photos and videos to ON1. It took multiple attempts, adjusting LrC between each before the migration finally worked well. Then, the system crashes in ON1 became overwhelming, 2-3 per day. They seem to be related primarily to the fact that I have a large amount of my library linked through Sync to my iOS devices. The stand alone apps have been great to this point. I also have all the Topaz tools. I have seen similar results to yours, but I have also seen better results. I think it depends on the photo at hand. I like both!
Thanks much Marc and yes I agree, it can vary by photo hence why I mention that your mileage may vary. Both are good products, although as I say in the video I prefer On1 because it has a fully integrated workflow which is quicker and more efficient. Glad you are using On1 and hopefully it has been stable for you so you can edit all those 100k pics you have! 😁

Topaz has Studio for other editing stuff. And they sell software in bundles. For Topaz, there are updates and upgrades available for one year from purchase. ON1 will provide updates until the next major release (upgrade). This may happen if you are purchasing in the second half of the year, days before the next major release. That's the time when good discounts on ON1 products happen. Great discounts on Topaz products happen on Black Friday.
Yes all true except that Topaz Studio hasn't been updated in well over a year, maybe 2 at this point so it's basically a dead product. So while it can edit, there is zero focus on it from their side so I would not consider it a serious editor. But yes their utility products (Denoise, Sharpen, Gigapixel) are all very solid.

@@JimNix I didn't consider Studio serious either. Until I recently found, that it's actually a lot faster and more reliable than my ON1 Photo RAW 2021 (I don't have the time to test the 2022 version, sorry - it may or may not be a lot faster than 2021 (I doubt it)). And I can do sort of the same. Now I think it's just a different strategy. ON1 did become bulky over the years because they try to put everything they have in one flagship product. They try to compete with Photoshop and Lightroom at the same time. So Photo RAW is becoming more laggy and more buggy over time. For example, I have had a lot of trouble with masks in ON1 Photo RAW since the 2019 version. Topaz, on the other hand, was always a plugin first company. So Studio for now is a side project - an umbrella for their plugins. Plus some basic editing. In the end, every company has limited resources and has to prioritize. I think, eventually Topaz will have to update their Studio, but it's not their main focus for sure. But for some people, it may be the tool they need. Honestly, I wouldn't be bothering with it if Photo RAW worked for me as it should.
@ interesting that you have problems with On1 but it works so well for me. I do agree that On1 is competing with LR and PS in 1 product, but even with everything that's in it, it does not feel bulky, crowded or slow to me. But for sure Topaz is essentially just a plugin company and I suspect that will remain their focus.
I first noticed AI upsizing in Pixelmator Pro, not generally regarded as a top level editor, but the fastest one for me for non critical workflow and was able to print 16mp m4/3 images 20 by 24 at very acceptable resolution. I have ON1 2021 so this video makes the upgrade a clear choice. Thanks for the this very helpful video 😀
thanks for watching and yeah I have Pixelmator Pro too and it's a pretty nice app overall! but for sure On1 Photo RAW 2022 is an incredibly powerful and fully featured editor!
Thanks for the comparison. I did not buy gigapixel because on1 resize A1 works great. I think Topaz denoise is superior to On1 at this time. 4 different algorithms at the same time is great. I often did not like the results of On1 Denoise solutions. Neither one of them. I only use Topaz for noise reduction. On1 is my primary editor. I sometimes drop back to Luninar products to do things easier. On1 portrait module is mucho better than Luminar products but there are still times when I go back to luminar for some things.
ON1 Photo RAW has got it all now (at least for me). Integrated NoNoise AI, soon to integrate Resize AI, added plugin round trip support for Topaz, and Luminar AI (soon to have NEO too), Layers, and a great asset manager. Looks like they have Topaz in their sights. It's a great package!
Hi Jim, One major difference between Gigapixel and ON1 Resize IS, that with Gigapixel the resolution can only be 72 ppi and with ON1 it is by default 300 ppi (and that can be changed up or down). So, it would appear (unless I missed it) you have failed (forgotten) to point this out. As a result, you aren't comparing an orange with an orange but something entirely different.
Landed here because of the On1 email ad. Tried the On1 trial and I'm getting some odd results that appears to be like water color painting when zoomed in all the way. It's actually made things less sharp and I'm testing on 100MP image with Schneider Kreuznach lenses. That AI is definitely doing something funky. Maybe really have to play around with it some more but so far closeups are smudgy like when you zoom into an iphone image too far, but here I'm still only looking at 100% of the newly generated image for 2x resolution.
You are enlarging an image shot with a 100MP camera? Are you covering a building with it? LOL that is LARGE. But, good feedback here and please send this to On1 so they are aware. That's how they will make this even better. Thanks for stopping by.
@@JimNix LOL, you'd be surprised the times when the odd desire to crop something comes up and you just want to enlarge it. On1 was promoting their product so I figured I'd give it a run through test on my medium format to see how it handles it. I've had issues with large image files in various software so that's always the first thing I throw at it. Enjoyed your review!
Hi Jim, thanks for this comparison. Some remarks I want to add: 1) None of the Topaz products (which I all really like) handle RAW images really well. They are all looking flat, sometimes with a color shift. So Topaz Products are really to be used on TIFF/JPG. 2) resizing is usually the last step before outputting the image. Therefore usually if you use any of the two programs as Plugin, you will send a TIFF/JPG over to them. This of course does not apply if you use Resize AI with On1 PhotoRAW. 3) Gigapixel AI does not have a fixed upper limit. However they warn you if you go beyond 600% (which is a 36x pixel increase!) that quality might not be as good. If On1 would produce better results at scales beyond 6x has still to be seen. As of now I would not see this as an advantage per se for On1. Otherwise many valid points. As for those example images: On1 Resize AI seems to try to extract more details but slightly at the cost of a artificial look. GigaPixel AI though not looking as sharp remains a bit more natural. However it might be, that after some fine tuning this may look different. I am looking forward to try Resize AI for myself. At least its good to have some competition in this area. Thanks again for your effort!
Thanks Jens and great inputs here, I appreciate it. Thanks for sharing (and watching, of course). I agree it's awesome that there is more competition in this space - always a win for us photographers to have some extra choices! 😁
@@paulmeachen2306 cool thanks for sharing, so it could go above 6x if the original file is small enough but then in On1 you could go much larger than that it seems
I want to point out that you can enlarge more than 6x in Gigapixel AI, if you use the ...x button on the right. I don't recall the maximum, but it's a lot higher than 6. I rarely go higher than 4x, however. I don't have a camera that outputs raw files, so I can't speak to that.
Thanks Larry and others are saying that Gigapixel has a limit of 32000 pixels on the long edge, so that could be more than 6x if the original file is small enough, but regardless you can still go much larger in On1.
@@johnmichaelleslie4835 I had not actually tried that. I think 4x is generally about the limit for getting a good result for most subjects, especially if people are involved.
@@larrypendergraft2696 Yup, I'd agree 4x is a good choice... although remember with versions later than 5.4.5 to turn off Face Refinement if you have any faces that aren't really small in the image (which is what it is designed to help with), as it makes things worse on larger faces, quite a bit worse. I have a link to an example of this but my previous attempt to post a link disappeared, so I'll pass on trying again.
Which is better for batch upscaling? I want to upscale texture maps being used in 3d programs to 4k from 1/2k and I want to overwrite the originals so I'm not breaking the file path links used in the 3d software.
quick question about workflow: do you prefer doing the rezise, when needed, at the start or at the end? (would love a video about that, with rezising, denoising, sharpening, editing and finally prepping to print)
Hi Bruno and thanks, and I would do resize at the end after I have done everything else to the photo. It's essentially the last step before export/print, which is why they included the export and print options in the product. And yes, I will probably do a full workflow once it is integrated into Photo RAW. thanks!
Jim - thanks for this comparison. You've piqued my interest. I use Luminar Neo/AI. Aside from Resize, would I find advantages with On1 compared to Luminar for photo editing?
Hi there and both are great products that I love. Neo is my most used, because I feel it is quicker to master and get great results with. On1 is a bit more robust in some areas (layers, masking, etc) but will take longer to get more comfortable with. I find they are great complements to each other actually. Also On1 has NoNoise AI built it, which is amazing noise reduction, and also has HDR, Timelapse, Focus Stacking and more. So it's got a lot you can do. Thanks.
Great review, do you have any thoughts on using ON1 Resize as a standalone with DxO Photolab? Would I even need Resize with Photolab's lens correction & sharpening? My goal--if health cooperates--is to make A1 size prints with Micro 4/3 gear. Thanks,
Thanks for watching Rick. I have not tried these two together, but it should work just fine. You could use DXO for the lens correction but for sure Resize AI would help to make the image larger. So that would be a good combo in my opinion. You could try sharpening in either to compare. Thanks.
Okay Jim, you’ve done a pretty good sales job on getting me to purchase ON1. I can get it for a good price, so I’ll download it today and spend some time working with it. Your tutorials help a lot. Keep up the good work….
Trying to switch to ON1 from LR, your videos always do a good job at keeping me in the loop and trying out new things. But mostly just wanted to say I love how you much you listen and respond to comments/feedback. Very cool my man, if ya ever in South Florida hit me up would love to shoot together! Keep it up!
I’ve used Topaz Gigapixel for a few years with mixed results - sometimes it’s great and other times it creates unacceptable artifacts. Plus, using it can be time consuming if you compare all the models. So I’m looking forward to ON1 resize. I also use the current ON1 “fractal” resize, with similar mixed results - sometimes very good, sometimes too many artifacts.
Thanks Bart and yes if you bounce between models, and it has to recalculate each time, that can add some time for sure. But I find On1 to be quicker all around. And I do think any product like this will give mixed results at times. I have generally been more pleased with On1 in all my tests so far, as I mentioned in the video. Thanks for watching.
i have tried on1 resize with gigapixel 6 as well, and have discovered on1 resize has a strange anomaly that i reported directly to on1 support. i can't show the picture here, but what happens is when i go above 5000px height with a 21 megapixel image ( 16bit tiff) to say, 5500 or 6000 then i get really bad smearing artefacts. here is a quote from on1 support. "The differences you’re seeing is a known issue where the AI models are switching for different scaling amounts. There are shift points in the way the models are used. We are investigating ways to reduce this, but currently do not have any solutions..." This issue NEVER happens with gigapixel, no matter what pixel height i choose. I might also point out that on1 resize is terrible with low res portrait images, again, i get bad artefacts around the eyes and mouth. I would not buy this product for these reasons. there is much work to be done, just as gigapixel took several versions to get it working right, so too will on1 resize.
@@iankelsall25 I’ve done limited testing, comparing Gigapixel AI and ON1 Resize - just a few photos, but I took a lot of time to experiment with settings and examine the results. Gigapixel has the fewest negatives (artifacts and areas that just don’t look “right”) and the most natural look overall. Granted, the photos I used had some challenges, and there were areas in photos where I thought Resize did better, but I don’t think you can expect a new product to surpass a more mature product right out of the gate.
@@bhovis true, but the severity of this particular error ( i posted on facebook) i got would be a total deal breaker, it would essentially render the program unusable for me. If it is a 'known issue' it should not be released until resolved.
Jim, you did not address the obvious blue halos that are readily apparent in the in glass archways above the bicyclist and the crunciness in the leaves of the background tree on the left in the OnOne process. Maybe its just me, but the Topaz version looks better (no halos, not crunchy), albeit without sharpening. Granted, you have to run the Topaz version through your preferred sharpening software, but if you are running a Lightroom/Photoshop workflow, that is not too much of a burden.
I noticed the same thing and came to the comments section to see if anyone else mentioned it before bringing it up. Over the years I have grown to hate the crunchiness of overly sharpened images. And so while the Topaz version is softer, it also feels more natural.
Thanks for watching and either one will do well on a landscape but my preference is On1 Resize AI for any type of photo. It just gives you more power and flexibility I think. thanks
@@rajibhowlader9833 yes in my experience Resize AI is doing a better job - feel free to wait until it launches and then download a trial and test it for yourself
@@rajibhowlader9833 that's why I recommend the trial, as I can't possibly know how it will work for you - I have a Mac with high specs, so it's different, but On1 is quicker for me
I like to blow up small images from Instagram and RUclips videos. I was able to get a copy of Resize AI. I found it hard to find my way around Resize AI but eventually, I got it to work. It doesn't look like Resize AI can do much with a 4x resize of a 600-pixel x 600-pixel image. In contrast, Gigapixel improved the same picture including the faces. Resize AI seems like a nice product for normal-size images especially if you like to make large prints.
Thanks Martin and sorry you found it hard to navigate. My first video about it shows the various sections etc in case that helps (but sounds like you figured it out already). As I said in this video, I do think you mileage may vary. I am finding On1 working quite well for me, but to your point I am using mostly normal sized images to start with. Thanks for watching!
Great job as usual. One question that comes to mind is the amount of difference in these products that results from different starting points. You mentioned that in this video but I’m talking about more of the extremes. For example, as an arm chair genealogist (not my day job), I often must start with a really horrible photo. For example, a .png file of size 25kb. It might be interesting to compare the two products from different starting points.
Thanks much Greg and yes that is an interesting use case for this technology. I don't personally do any genealogy but I can understand what you mean. In my case, I have old photos that I would probably just take a picture of with my iPhone, but then that's the not the same starting point as the original photo. But it could still be interesting. I guess a scanner would be helpful to get a high rez photo copy made right?
I'd try the Topaz trial and see if the Low Resolution model works for that (there is also a Very Compressed mode if the issue is due to excessive digital compression) then compare with ON1 when it appears.
Thank you for that. I use GPAI (but aren't an ON1 beta tester) and I think it probably hit the balance for most usable/best quality for non-Raw enlargement at 5.4.5, as later ones could bite more easily. You get some advantages in 6.0.0 (which I'm running, previously boomeranging back to 5.4.5 with new versions) but you still have to watch the settings. I'd turn off "Face Refinement" and "Reduce Colour Bleed" by default, for example. Also using the option to compare 4 models in a 2x2 arrangement is good for images you care about - amusingly when they had 4 models they didn't have a 2x2 view, when that changed to 5 (somewhat different ones) it was added ;-) On your ON1 JPEG image it did seem to have huge sharpening halos on the windows a the top of the zoomed-in view with sharpening off - is there something odd going on there? (Also the sign mid-left got nuked.) IMHO people using these tools (and most others) should remember the Real World isn't all that sharp a lot of the time and keep the sharpening within the bounds of realism, unless they creatively don't want to, of course. Any chance of making the images available for people to play with, especially the JPG? (Apologies if I missed a link.) P.S. "Face Refinement" is only for small faces, for versions later than 5.4.5 do not enable it with faces that are a significant part of the image as it will make them worse (at least as far as 6.0.0, hopefully will be fixed soon). P.P.S. GPAI is one of a range of products, from a range of people, that you should never pay full price for as a sale will be along any second (as per DXO, Capture One, etc. etc.).
Gigapixel beats Topaz AI in every image I tried. I got a link to this video in an email directly from On1. Is this a bias comparison? Maybe, maybe not. But I tried both demo versions and ended up buying Gigapixel because it did significantly better no matter what image I threw at it. I will do a comparison version on my channel to show people my results. It is not even an opinion, the results speak for themselves.
...yeah, I think I disagree...the On1 might look a little more pleasing due to the more aggressive sharpening applied...the gigapixel version was "calmer" and a tad more "natural"....I don't own either of these packages... The lighter version of the first image you showed was more pleasing, obviously, but the highlights were blown out in a way the Topaz version was not, but that could easily be approved on with both packages I would guess... I'm wondering, what happened to the street name sign on the reddish building....? How did these apps handle that...? I have wondered how these types of software packages would deal with text that is very, very close to being possible to read, but not quite there...?
I also use both products (on pc with Windows 10), and i find that the file size after saving is much bigger with On1 than with other photo editing products. And this with jpg, with tiff and png as well. Do you have the same expirience? Or am I overseeing something? (I use the same saving parameters on all programs)
Glad you were able to find some 'free time' to do this comparison. I agree the On1 Resize looks better. Question... Topaz charges an annual license fee for it's software, what about On1? Do you buy it outright or is there an annual fee? Thanks, very helpful video !!
Hi Robert and they offer some choices. You can buy it outright but depending on what you need/want it may be a better deal to get the full app Photo RAW since it has everything in it. And usually they come out with 1 paid upgrade per year, like most companies. You can read more here: www.on1.com/products/resize/buy/?coupon=RESIZEUP
Topaz don't have an annual fee as such (currently, anyway), you can use it as long as you want, they throw in one year of free upgrades with purchase and you can purchase further upgrade years if you want. My year runs out in 2 days BTW so I'm glad 6.0.0 snuck into it. (They used to have a different licencing policy.)
@@johnmichaelleslie4835 yeah it was fee upgrades for life but changed a couple of years ago or so - glad you got the latest before your year ran out! 👍🏻
Disclosure: I use On1 Resize from when it was Genuine Fractals. During presentation I found few incorrect statements regarding Gigapixel. It seems that a commenter was hired just to promote On1 Resize AI and other On1 software. Argument about cost does not make sense for me. As professionals we have few tools to do same job and choose most effective for any particular case.
Hello, Jim Nix. The least you can do is zoom in to see details sometimes because honestly, I can't see anything fantastic here. Oh, well ... thank you anyway.
@@JimNix Yes, it would be way more informative for us because even if I watch your video in 2160p, and in full screen, all I can see is sharpen "things", but that's pretty much it. So, of course YOU can see better results on your large monitor when you record your video, but not us. And I have a 27" monitor (BenQ ZOWIE XL2740). Also, remember that many people watch videos on their tablets and / or cellphones today more than ever. So, if you don't zoom in to show them details ... I'm sorry to say that, but it's useless. Thank you for your response. I appreciate it, Jim Nix. Stay safe, take care.
@@NetTubeUser yep that's fair. I rarely watch anything on my iPhone simply bc I hate the small screen, but you are right that many people do. So I will try and keep that in mind. thanks!
@@JimNix Great initiative and decision, Jim Nix! This video has just come at the right time for me as I was thinking of getting Gigapixel AI. Having watched this a couple of times I'm swayed more to the On1 Resize AI now. Does your Coupon JIMNIX20 work with the reduced price offer of On1? Maybe its a bit much if its already at a reduced preorder price.
Thanks Ken and I hope you enjoy it. I doubt that coupon codes will work since it is already reduced, but it's worth a try. If you use the link above they will credit me with the sale, which helps me a little (if you don't mind - no extra cost to you of course). Thanks for watching!
An extremely limited test for one very specific type of use using very specific settings... This gives me no real idea of what software is better. But I will say im very confused that an apparently new AI upscaler is not leaps and bounds ahead of Topaz Gigapixel, considering how old Gigapixel is.. Surely all a company has to do is get a new batch of training images bigger than before, and train a new model up with a new supercomputer to a further extent than previous. It should result in a superior AI upscaler. A note on the sharpening, its a bit pointless if its just a post effect which i could do in any software, im wondering if its AI sharpening or just unsharp mask.
I'll give On1 Resize AI a try when I have some spare time. I hope it's good and I hope it goes well, but after using On1 photo Raw for the first 2 odd dumpster fire years after launch, doesn't give me a whole lot of faith in the product. Hopefully things have changed and On1 photo raw is working better these days. I still like the idea of having everything in one place, editing, sharpening, denoise and now improved AI in one place.
Hmm, interesting that you have found On1 to not be that good. It works great for me and is powerful and very capable too. And I agree, everything in 1 place is an amazing accomplishment and a workflow improvement for all of us. thanks
@@JimNix For a lot of the people that used the early versions it worked well, but there was a bunch of us that just had quite a lot of issues. Different hardware configs, so nothing really tying us together easily. I've got nothing against the team, and I hope they do well, but for those of us who had issues, it was like running alpha software, and I think early on, the team underestimated how much effort was needed to put into making a fully fledged raw editor. I put up with it, as I really wanted it to work and I was only a hobbyist photographer back then. Being a part time pro now, I couldn't deal with that level of problems in software, I would have thrown it out the window within a week. I'm using Capture One and I love it (with Topaz Denoise, sharpen, Gigapixel), JpegMini and Affinity Photo and it works well for me. I'm tempted to go back and try On1 Photo Raw again, when I get some free time. Great review by the way.

Awesome comparison of both products. I am already a user of ON1 Photo RAW 2022 as my main hub, so as you can imaging, I am eager to see ResizeAI being integrated :). For folks using these resize tools as plugins, be aware that ON1 Photo RAW 2022 one-time license no longer includes ON1 plugins. If your hope is to get ON1 Photo RAW for its plugins to maximize cost, you will need to buy ON1 Everything subscription. Thank you so much for this comparison Jim. It really helps forging a view and justify the patience for ResizeAI ;).
Thanks much Frederic and yes that is why I recommend On1 Photo RAW, so you can get everything in 1 place and not worry about additional cost of plugins etc. But I appreciate you pointing that out. And thanks for watching!
be nice to have an independent view rather than a promotional video. If you had chosen some of the options on Topaz it would have shown a better result.
I have better results with Gigapixel AI. What Resize AI lacks is NoNoise AI. Although sharpening can be used well, the images are very noisy and there is no way to eliminate it
@@JimNix Yes, because Resize AI doesn't reduce noise enough at the begining, So there is no way to remove that noise in the enlarged version either. The best way is to use NoNoise AI first and then use Resize AI. Gigapixel AI does a better job of removing that noise up front so that it's gone after you enlarge the image.
Gigapixel AI is my Swiss knife. I use it even when I don't have to enlarge the image and just want to "clean up" an image, but if I want to, then I just hit a 2x or 4x button and that's it. GP works best with skin and faces and once the necessary adjustments are found, GP keeps them static and does not automatically change them with each new image, so it is not necessary to keep moving the adjustments every time. In that, Resize AI is more annoying because with each new image the settings are reset and you have to be accommodating them again. The same is in NoNoise AI.
Great comparison. I have used ON1 Resize for years with great results. Recently, however, I received a wonderful photo, taken with an iPhone and sent to me via text. This is certainly not the usual photo I am dealing with but it was a special shot. I tried resizing this 13 KB file with ON1 and the results were useless resulting in terrible pixelation. I did the same resizing with Giga Pixel AI and it was amazing.
Giga is easier to use. I just downloaded on1 trial to see if it's worth buying. it's too complicated. I just want to use it to un blur photos but there are so many steps to simply clear a blurred photo
Well, these are two very different products. On1 is a full featured editor (like having Lightroom and Photoshop together in one app), and it also includes the ability to AI Resize an image. Gigapixel just does the resize and that's it.
@@JimNix I agree that there are more options but for someone like me, I just want simplicity meaning, to just go in and resize or upscale. How would I do that with this product.
2:08 Looking at the two photos side by side, obviously the exposure is different, but so is the crop. On1's crop is much tighter in. I am willing to bet that On1 is showing you a jpeg preview embedded in your raw (normally what you see on the back of your camera) and Topaz is showing you the actual raw data unprocessed. Also, see the x... on Topaz, well...you can type in any number you want there. you will get warned that numbers higher than 600% will yield questionable results. This is also true of On1, yet they do not tell you that.
Hey man! Hope you are well. Not sure the crop is that different, maybe slightly. They are the same size and both at 50% zoom, so it should be pretty close overall. Not sure about the preview though, good question.
@@JimNix I just know that there was a trick you could do in LR that allows you to get more of the crop that actually comes out of the camera. Not a lot of people know that what you see is actually a crop of the full raw. Seems odd to me that the On1 image is missing quite a bit all along the outside if they are the same file unless On1 is doing what I said.
on1 looks awful and messes up the geometry of objects, lol. not only that, but the trash program also introduces coloured fringing as can be seen in the windows at 10:16 for example
Thanks for the comparison information Jim - very helpful. Just a note - your coupon code JIMNIX20 works for the On1 Photo RAW 20% discount, but when I initially tried to use the code JIMNIX, it gave me an error message saying that the coupon-code was not found. Just an FYI in case you want to update your link notes above.
Thanks for your feedback
I couldn't agree more. Same experience here.
@@decoryder which online offerings are you referring to?
Thanks, Jim...I have On1Photo RAW 2022 and am looking forward to the Resize upgrade. Learned a lot on how to utilize On1 Resize from this presentation!!
thank you for watching Kent!
Hello Jim. I also got my full copy of Resize ai. I am very impressed. I discovered that upscaling without additional sharpening gives me the best result. Import the upscaled photo by resize ai into Topaz sharpen ai for amazing results.
Thanks Chris, glad you have it and are liking it. I think they did a great job with it. Thanks for sharing your findings as well!
I like your new background and your dog is sweet! Great info on these tools.
Thanks much but this is a temporary setup while I get my office floors replaced and bathroom updated. Gonna be a few weeks in here! 😀
Thanks, Jim. Besides, it is always nice to see a picture of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
thanks and yes that place is amazing!
Very useful video, thank you..am gonna purchase on1
thanks and have fun with it!
Thanks again Jim! Looking forward to the release of On1 resize ai as a gigapixel (360) photographer.
thanks for watching Chris!
I own on1 photo raw 2022 but I must admit I hardly use it. No matter the new versions, I don't like LR so, I will give it a chance.
Thanks Jim
thanks Jose and yeah give it a whirl, you might like it and it can do so much!
Nice comparison.
I saw that On1 is using your review in their advertising. Congrats there, too.
thanks much Leon and yes that was a nice surprise to be in their newsletter!
Thanks for watching Mark and for sure it is an incredible all in one solution. Thanks!
Forgive me, I haven't a clue! :)
@@khoaptran yep true, good point about cropping. Thank you for watching!
Topaz for some reason raws are darker. I think they fixed that issue in DeNoise, but I'm not sure. I only use DXO Deep Prime now for noise reduction.
Thanks and yep must be how they render/handle raw files compared to On1.
Hi Jim, thanks for this comparison. Some remarks I want to add:
1) None of the Topaz products (which I all really like) handle RAW images really well.
Gigapixel has a limit of 32000 pixels on the longest edge.
@@paulmeachen2306 cool thanks for sharing, so it could go above 6x if the original file is small enough but then in On1 you could go much larger than that it seems
@@paulmeachen2306 Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't aware of that (never had such big files).
However the AI models only support up to 6x, so if you choose more than 6x you will get a warning saying it will do a less good job.
And yes, I will probably do a full workflow once it is integrated into Photo RAW. thanks!
I just noticed that Resize installs in Photoshop under File->Automate just like Gigapixel AI.
good to know, thanks for sharing Martin!
Thanks.
Hi Jim, will ON1 resize be added as a free update in the future if you already have photo raw?
Yes it will, so do not buy it. I think once they release Resize AI there will be an update for Photo RAW 2022 but not sure on exact timing.
@@JimNix Thanks.
@@toru7a you bet
Cool Jim, nailed it again. Total agreement. On1 smoked Topaz on this one. Don't get me wrong, I love Studio & its presets.
As for PS & LR? no thanks.
thanks and yeah On1 is an amazing product for sure!
Thanks much Steve, Photo RAW is an amazing editor and I will keep covering it in detail. Hope you enjoy the vids - thanks for watching!
Trying to switch to ON1 from LR, your videos always do a good job at keeping me in the loop and trying out new things. But mostly just wanted to say I love how you much you listen and respond to comments/feedback. Very cool my man, if ya ever in South Florida hit me up would love to shoot together! Keep it up!
Oh also I actually don't like the sharpening in either of the first two photos (in ON1). Reminds me too much of a cell phone image. Just my $.02.
Thanks much Sean, I appreciate the kind words and maybe I will see ya there someday!
Sir thanks for give up the video. So sir which one is best for Landscape you think
Thanks for watching and either one will do well on a landscape but my preference is On1 Resize AI for any type of photo. It just gives you more power and flexibility I think. thanks

Excellent video. Thanks.
thank you
Very nice comparison Jim ON1 is making it more difficult to leave their software, Now I'm just waiting for them to add support for the Nikon Z9; )
Thanks much and yep I trust they will add support for that camera, and hopefully soon. I appreciate it!
Also using the option to compare 4 models in a 2x2 arrangement is good for images you care about - amusingly when they had 4 models they didn't have a 2x2 view, when that changed to 5 (somewhat different ones) it was added ;-)
On your ON1 JPEG image it did seem to have huge sharpening halos on the windows a the top of the zoomed-in view with sharpening off - is there something odd going on there? (Also the sign mid-left got nuked.)
IMHO people using these tools (and most others) should remember the Real World isn't all that sharp a lot of the time and keep the sharpening within the bounds of realism, unless they creatively don't want to, of course.
Any chance of making the images available for people to play with, especially the JPG? (Apologies if I missed a link.)
Very useful comparison thank you for sharing it! I also prefer an overall integrated software as opposed to a plug-in.
Thanks so much for watching and yeah it's hard to beat a fully integrated experience in my opinion.
I also use both products (on pc with Windows 10), and i find that the file size after saving is much bigger with On1 than with other photo editing products. And this with jpg, with tiff and png as well. Do you have the same expirience? Or am I overseeing something? (I use the same saving parameters on all programs)
Does A1 resize have batch processing? Thanks
Yes you can add multiple photos to Resize AI at once, and then edit each one separately or edit one and sync that edit to all the others. thanks
@@JimNix thank you, I appreciate your efforts with all the videos. Great job.

Oh, well ... thank you anyway.
ha good point, I can zoom in further next time to make it easier to see
@@JimNix Yes, it would be way more informative for us because even if I watch your video in 2160p, and in full screen, all I can see is sharpen "things", but that's pretty much it.

@@pertang630 thanks for that and good background too. I think you will find it to be very stable and solid at this point. That has been my experience and I have been using pretty extensively over the last year and a half or so. I really like it, and feel like they may be the best (only?) truly "end to end" product out there. It's a very comprehensive package that has worked well for me. If you find the time to try it again, I hope you find it a useful product. Thanks for watching!
i have tried on1 resize with gigapixel 6 as well, and have discovered on1 resize has a strange anomaly that i reported directly to on1 support. i can't show the picture here, but what happens is when i go above 5000px height with a 21 megapixel image ( 16bit tiff) to say, 5500 or 6000 then i get really bad smearing artefacts. here is a quote from on1 support.
Although sharpening can be used well, the images are very noisy and there is no way to eliminate it
You mean after you enlarge you see a lot of noise?
@@kevbarre6188 ah ok, then in that case yes Gigapixel is easier bc that is all it does.
@@JimNix thanks
Super🙏🙏🙏 sir
thanks
No ON1 Resize AI is not using the embedded jpeg for the raw image.
@@aaronsiegel8367 good to know
@@aaronsiegel8367 So why is it cropped? Thoughts or just?
Gigapixel looks better to my eyes
Ok cool
on1 looks awful and messes up the geometry of objects, lol. not only that, but the trash program also introduces coloured fringing as can be seen in the windows at 10:16 for example
Thanks much Aaron and yes they had to change codes a while back so it's JIMNIX20 now, thank you for pointing that out!
