I've just downloaded the trial to compare it to my copy of Topaz Gigapixel AI version 6.0.0 (latest version as of this comment). I tested them with a variety of images and Topaz won every time. I would say currently ON1's AI upscaler is on par with Gigapixel AI from 2 years ago. ON1 produces weird fractals at 4x upscale and doesn't remove noise while Gigapixel AI produces clean details and also removes the noise at the same time.
I've been looking forward to this eventual video coming out. I watched the promo video from On1, but it was obviously a marketing tool. The manuscript didn't seem to be written by anyone actually looking at the results being described. I really appreciate your real world analysis.
Sure thing, Joel. And yes, all companies have to market their products. It was nice of ON1 to dole out some pre-release versions so folks like me could kick tires. I'm happy to report the marketing is not hype - the product performs. Thanks as always for watching.
How is it's batch processing? I want to upscale a large number of textures that are used in 3D rendering and replace the originals with the upscaled versions.
The difference I found in Resize from on1 and Gigapixel from Topaz, is that Topaz works better with faces. I put an image with one person in front and two people in the back and on1 only improved the face of the person in front and did not touch the faces of the people who were in the back while Topaz improved all the faces.
Editing software is becoming really really competitive !!!. One thing On1 should improve is luminosity masks. I like on1 in spite the lags on my iMac from late 2015 😄 Thanks Scott
Ah yes ... as our machine age, we notice. What about the luminosity masks in ON1 would you like to see improved. (Of course, we always want more speed :).
@@ScottDavenport I don't know if you know Tony Kuyper's luminosity panel. I don't mean something so accurate but it would be great having more options on making masks in ON1. I notice it a bit restricted, limited and inacurate Thanks Scott
Hi Dave ... interesting idea. Downscaling is often done at Export ... you can use Resize AI to shrink a photo (ex: set the Percentage to 50). I did a little tinkering but don't see the AI doing anything with adding detail. Kinda going against the grain with this use case.
This is major for my long lens bird pictures. I use Topaz sharpen Ai and now this fantastic Resize in Photo Raw 2022, I'm off to the races. Also bought the Epson 8500 ET printer for my home printing up to 8.5 x 11 prints. Would have liked to have bought the 8550 but many more $$$ and not on sale. Better to use pro printing online for the larger prints. Thanks for the tutorial as always it is right on the money.
I have the A4 version (XP-8700 $160) of this Epson printer and am thinking of getting the A3 version for under $300: Epson Expression Photo XP-970. I hear the results are pretty good. If I actually SELL some prints, I may opt for the 8550 with tanks. But I think the $$$ I save can buy inks since I don't print THAT much. For Resize AI, I'd most likely go for larger prints anyway, sending them off to print.
Thanks for the intro to this interesting new addition to the On1 range. I use PR 2022 as my main photo editor so await its integration. Of course, the big question, which I am sure you will address in a future video, is how it compares with Gigapixel AI from Topaz. I don't print photos usually, but have used GPAI to upscale to 4K very low res JPG scans of colour slides that I did some 20 years ago. The results can be quite impressive, although further training is still required on faces in the background. I would like to see how this new software deals with such cases.
I have seen some comparisons on a Topaz website, admittedly with the pre-release of ON1RAI, and the latter couldn't handle scans of old photos with faces at all well. The big plus with GPAI would seem to be the face refinement tool when dealing with such images. This is something that the Topaz devs seem to be concentrating on at the moment. There is another rival product that maybe you should take a look at: it's from AVC Labs.
I am not sure I understand using the long edge. I no longer have a printer I only use a lab. You were going to mage a 16x20 so you set it to 20. So how do I get it to be a 16x20? Before the change, you could just set it to be a 16x20. Then it would upscale it to be that dimension. I am still confused with the 2022 version. How do I do that?
Hi Dave ... if you want a specific set of dimensions, you're correct, you just key those in using the Dimensions setting. In Photo RAW 2022 today (pre-Resize AI), you'll find a 16x20 in the Photographic set of Presets in the Document Size panel.
Hi Scott, good video. All looks very impressive, and I am looking forward to it arriving in Photo Raw 2022. You don't mention softproofing, which is part of the current Photo Raw. Does the Standalone product include softproofing?
Hi David ... Resize AI has some soft proofing support, insofar as you can turn on proofing and load a color profile to see the changes. There are also options to turn off/on gamut warnings, change the intent, etc. However, Resize AI doesn't have adjustments to compensate or correct things. That is still a task better suited to Photo RAW proper, or whatever host application you are using Resize AI with. HTH.
Yes, you can use Resize AI on portraits. I haven't personally done that (not my genre of photography). ON1's web pages do note portraits can be enlarged.
Looks impressive but I would have hoped those of us with PhotoRaw 2022 would have had resize BEFORE the Stand alone/plugin versions were released as a loyalty bonus. My real wishes are that ON1 would revamp their Focus Stacking and Pano software as I find it far inferior to products like Affinity photo. I also wish they would follow Adobe and allow us to use bracketed shots taken as part of a pano and process them en-bloc rather than having to do the brackets then the pano separately. perhaps you could suggest to them as they may listen to you!😉😉
It'd be nice if the products came out simultaneously. Hopefully the Photo RAW integration will follow quickly (order of weeks, not months). As for the other features, have you raised and/or upvoted them in the Photo RAW Project? on1.sjv.io/3PaYdv
Have you tried doing any "downsizing" of image size to see how it looks? The native downsize to On1 is not all that good and you end up having to add some sharpening which then introduces halos. If you are downsizing for a web page, say a 800px wide image, the sharpness is not there compared to other software. Anyway, hoping to see if downsizing with Resize AI will be better. Thanks for the demo, Scott! Always enjoy your videos.
Hey Scott. Enjoyed your evaluation of On1. I'm a professional photographer and often asked for files to print extremely large murals. One of my last requests was for an image of 48 feet. Can On 1 handle this?
Hi Dennis... wow, that's big! :) I've not personally scaled anything that large. ON1 does include billboard mentions in their press, so in theory, yes. You may want to grab a free trial (on1.sjv.io/JrAW92) and test it out. Perhaps scale up your image, makes some tiles, and print a small segment of it to see how it works for you.
I read another note in ON1’s docs that, in theory, you can enlarge as much as you like. In practice, a 400% enlargement is a significant upscale. So yeah, best bet, try the demo.
Hi Scott, would you use this software before or after you had done all your other editing and cropping on a photo? In other words, at the beginning or at the end of your normal editing workflow?
Hi John ... Resize AI is at the end of your workflow, the last step before making a print. In the video, I showed there is a Crop tool in Resize AI. You can do cropping prior to going into Resize. The tool is there for cases you are cropping to a specific paper size.
You should lose the full-time on-screen ad. It gets in the way and makes it seem like you are more interested in making a commission on a sale than presenting a look at the software. I gave up after about 4 min when I discovered it ran pretty much the full length of the video. Fortunately, there are other Resize AI videos that don't do this.
Tks Scott, great review. Wow this opens up tremendous possibilities.
Thanks for watching, Merle. And yes ... great opportunities. :)
Your promo code worked for me, here in Scotland Scott! Got so many too small scans from 1990's mountaineering slides you convinced me.
Glad to hear, Bob. Thanks for the support.

Batching works best when your target resize has a common attribute (ex: fixed dimensions, long edge is X cm, etc.).
Question: Is there an advantage to use On1 Photo raw with Resize as opposed to plug-in for other programs? Do we get even better results that way?
No difference I’m aware of.
The difference I found in Resize from on1 and Gigapixel from Topaz, is that Topaz works better with faces. Hey Scott, what is your first thoughts on how it compares to Gigapixel?
I haven't done a comparison to Gigapixel AI. I'd like to...
I wish they had included a downsizing of an image in the Resize AI, should would have made a heck of do it all program.
