There was a time where you couldn't pry Lightroom from my "cold dead hands", and when they came up with this hairbrained idea to "rent" their software and make it where even loyal purchasers were paying full price as those who were just starting out; needless to say it soured me with them even in spite of the upgrades here and there.
I had been using On1 as a plugin for LR, but when On1 photoraw 2022 came out, and the No Noise program came out as a standalone, and really made my images pop, then On1 has my attention front and center.
I can't wait until the Resize Ai feature gets installed on the update for On1 Photoraw 2022. As it is, it's now my primary photo editor. You guys keep up the great work, and you will have a loyal customer for a long time.
Thanks for watching Perry and I agree that On1 have really given Adobe a run for their money. On1 has much more innovation and advancements coming out each year, and we benefit greatly from their R&D and all the effort they put into this amazing program. Thanks.
Thanks Jim for this preview.Really looking forward to this new feature! All respect what these guys are doing at ON1.
thanks for watching Marleen and yes the On1 team is crushing it!
Hi Jim, great video. I do have a question, though. How do you set resize dimensions where the proportions are not constrained. I cannot figure out how to set width and height independently. Thanks for any help.
Amazing product. Looking forward to its release.
thanks for watching Chris and I do think it's pretty amazing!
Hi Jim, after you resize and you want to export it, do you have to put the new dimension in the export area. Can you do a short video on how to complete the exporting of a resize image. I send my files to a photo lab. Thanks
HI there and thanks. After you use Resize AI it appears to be baked in upon export so you don't need to re-enter the dimensions, they are there. Thanks.
How does it compare with Topaz Gigapixel and Topaz Sharpen Al? I do my Denoising through DXO PureRAW 2 first, then I need a great app to Sharpen and sometimes Resize. I have been less than pleased with Topaz's Sharpen AI and Gigapixel which often changes my colors (darkens them) and sometimes leaves a lot of strange artifacts. I am hoping these new ON1 Plugins will work better for my workflow, but I am unsure of ON1's ability to Sharpen.
Hi Robert and thanks for watching. I have not compared it to Topaz yet. I plan to but I just got this last night and am tied up the rest of this weekend. So I will look and see what I can figure out. But the nice thing about On1 is that it's all fully integrated so it's more efficient than bouncing from app to app to app. But if you are using as a plugin from LR or PS or something then that isn't a benefit. Thanks.
@@JimNix Thanks for your reply Jim. I have both the ON1 RAW 2022 package, and I just bought the ON1 2022 Plugins, as they were offering a special deal on them. I have not really learned ON1 RAW yet, as I have so many other RAW editing apps that I have already learned and use (DXO, Topaz, Luminar AI/Neo), but would be open to using just ON1 if it can do the entire workflow (DeNoise, Sharpen, Color Enhancement/Color Grading, and Resizing). Looking forward to your review video between Topaz apps and their ON1 equivalents.
@@rwoeger On1 has a steeper learning curve than something like Luminar, but it has a really broad spectrum of capabilities, so that's expected. It's really powerful and is probably the most complete all in one editor, at least that I can think of. I have lots of On1 vids here in case they help you get up to speed. I will be comparing Resize AI to Gigapixel, as soon as I can find the time. 😁
Amazing Product. Thanks for the video
thank you for watching!
How will it work on smaller images like those from an iPhone?
Hi Murry and I tried it on some iPhone shots and it definitely works, but I don't think you can enlarge as much as with a better original file like from a mirrorless or DSLR. If you start with a better file, you end up with a bigger and better result. Thanks.
Will this update be part of the on1 PhotoRaw suite?
Thanks Jim
Per their website, yes. This will be added in for free.
As Jim mentioned in his video, ResizeAI will get to ON1 Photo RAW 2022 in one of upcoming update. Here is the quote from ON1 website: "...Note: Photo RAW 2022 will include the new ON1 Resize AI built-in, coming in a future update to Photo RAW..."
yes it will Jose, thanks!
Thanks for the review. Looks promising although seems heavy sharpening is taking place even by default?
Thanks for watching and it does look like there is a little sharpening that happens but it't not heavy in my opinion. And of course you can add sharpening and adjust it to taste. Thanks.
Jim, a real test is to copy a picture from Instagram (screen capture 700 x 900 px) that has faces in it and enlarge 4X.
Good suggestion, I can try that, thanks.
Definitively looking forward ResizeAI getting integrated to ON1 Photo RAW 2022. Can't remember where I read this (or if was just wishful thinking) but I have it imprinted in my mind it'll happened before end of the month. But I have two follow up questions: Will ResizeAI lead to even better results if you pass it through some sharpening tools first (i.e. Topaz SharpenAI) or if ResizeAI is just good enough by itself? And from a workflow perspective, would you recommend doing image processing first and then ResizeAI or the other way around? I feel Resize should be the last step before print but these tools are so advance and powerful, I'm just curious. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks Frederic. It is getting integrated in Photo RAW but I don't know exactly when. I believe Resize AI comes out as a standalone soon, maybe before end of April, but I am not sure if it also gets integrated into PR at the same time. I'm guessing that is a little later, but I don't know for sure. I have not had time to compare to SharpenAI but I would think you could sharpen here with great results and not need the Topaz product. However the sharpening here isn't AI-based so it's probably not exactly the same thing, but it is darn good here. And yes I would edit the image first, then do resizing when you are about ready to export or print. Thanks!
Thanks, Jim. So if you're not resizing or printing your photos, just sharing them online, can you use it just to sharpen them? If so, would you still sharpen them in NoNoise AI? Thanks!
thanks much Todd and yes you could just use the standard sharpening in On1 when you are ready to export, and I would skip it in NoNoise, as I would prefer to do it as the last thing before exporting - thanks!
Hey Jim, how does it compare to Topaz gigapixel AI? Also there is a plugin package that On1 sells that includes On1 resize. I already own ON1 Raw 2022. Is this any value if I don't use LR or photoshop to edit my photos? Great video !!
HI Ace and thanks, and I have not had time to compare it to Gigapixel yet. I literally got this last night and made the video this morning. 😁And I am tied up the rest of this holiday weekend. If you have PR2022 already you don't need to buy this. I am pretty sure that they said Photo RAW will get an update which will include this in the future. Maybe check their website to make sure but I am pretty sure. And PR works as a standalone so you wouldn't need LR or PS anyway. Thanks!
@@JimNix thank you very much for your quick reply and the information. I will take your advice and not purchase the plug-in
@@acehanson7231 yep just wait and once Photo RAW gets updated and this is included, you are all set! 😀
Nice review, though I couldn't see lots of difference in the before and after on this end.
I've no desire to make poster sized prints, but would like a product that will improve an image that has been cropped. On1 no noise helped with that. Would Resize improve the result?
Thanks!
Thanks Leon and yes if you crop a lot, this would help to upsize the remaining part of the photo and improve quality. Once it launches you could download a trial if you want to test it out. Thanks.
@@JimNix I just finished with the trial of Raw. Not sure if they'll let me try again. 8D
@@leonfisher hmm yeah maybe so
Very interesting. How does this compare with Gigapixel? I've been using Luminar AI & Neo and Topaz products. Not familiar with On1-- I haven't bought Gigapixel yet, so I'd be interested in a comparison of the two. Thanks !!
thanks for watching Robert and I haven't had time to compare it to Gigapixel yet but plan to as soon as I get some free time - thanks!
@@JimNix 'Free time'? What's that? When you find some let me know !!
@@robertmeyerson1618 LOL will do but I never seem to find any so I'm not feeling too confident about it 😁
Awesome video! Question: Do you like ON1's better than Topaz' Gigapixel? Would appreciate your take on that.
Hi Matt and thanks, was hoping you saw this video since you emailed me the other day. I knew I was getting it soon but wasn't sure exactly when. I haven't had time to compare to Gigapixel but the results I see here are so amazing I would use this instead, simply because I already use On1 a lot and it's fully integrated as a platform so it's cheaper and more powerful than getting several Topaz apps. Plus On1 just does a whole lot more overall than Topaz (HDR, timelapse, pano, focus stacking, amazing masking and filters, etc - whereas Topaz just essentially has single-function utility products). Thanks and hope that helps.
@@JimNix Hi Jim, thank you very much for the response. It was exactly what I was looking to hear from you!
@@emeregildo100 you're welcome and thanks for watching
@@JimNix And Skylum has made no commitment to restoring plugins to Neo. So Topaz stops working as a plugin on Neo. Only export and import and export and import. Time and resource consuming. The learning curve for ON1 is a little steeper than Lumiar, but I'm going to have to bite the bullet and move to ON1.
@@NormGilbert true, but with the war situation I don't expect firm commits. But I have spoken to them and they know we want plugins and I trust they will return, just don't know when. But for sure On1 is a great product all around and well worth the price of it.
As that well known tennis player, John McEnroe, once said, "Whaaaaaaaat - you cannot be serious ??' Well, On1 evidently are, as simple as that. Thanks Jim for ably demonstrating this phenomenal product. It has to be a must have piece of software.
thanks for watching Roger and yes it's pretty insane how good this is! 😁
That’s what I was wondering too. If for example you shot an image with a six megapixel camera and used this software, how would it compare to shooting the same image using a 24 megapixel camera in terms of making a large print and comparing both images to each other. Nobody has done this comparison.
There is a software program called Perfect Resize. A woman wanted to make a very large print from her cell phone photo. She used Perfect Resize and made a huge print using this software and it looked great. I don’t know how perfect resize compares to this software. Do you or anyone else have any opinions on this?
Looks great, Thanks Jim,
thanks much Tom!
Looks pretty good Jim. I have a 10 year old iMac with NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512 MB which was very slow (talking 5 minutes or more) to process Topaz Gigapixel. I deleted it and got a refund. Is ON1 quicker do you think?
Hi David and yes in my tests so far it is quicker than Gigapixel. However I am not sure how much you will notice on a 10 yo machine. It's pretty quick for me but my Mac is only 1+ yrs old so it's pretty current hardware. Maybe download a trial and see for yourself, once it comes out.
Thanks Jim. Can’t wait to try this against Topaz Gigapixel AI and see if it does the same thing i.e. over sharpen and the introduce weird artifacts to the image. If ON1 performs better, then I can wave goodbye to the Topaz AI suite once and for all. ON1 not quite there with their NoNoise AI, but DxO already has Topaz beat all ends up with denoising and sharpening. Bonus is because I already have the ON1 plug-ins for Lightroom, they gave me a license for Resize AI for free.
Thanks Andy and yep I def think Topaz is getting squeezed by both On1 and DXO, will be interesting to see how things develop. Glad you got a free copy! Hope you enjoy it.
( On1 resize vs topaz gigapixel ) whice one is better you think
I have not had time to compare them, but I do think it depends on your workflow. If you already have Gigapixel and use a Lightroom based workflow, it may make sense to stick with that. But if you use On1 is makes sense to use Resize since it will be built in already. And On1 overall does a whole lot more than Topaz which has a bunch of products designed for specific tasks only. So Topaz would cost more over time.
@@JimNix Thank you sir for your kind information.
@@rajibhowlader9833 you bet
Great video, thank you! If I simply want to blow up a good quality 3000 x 4500, 15MB photo to 24 x 36 or a little larger, will it make a big difference to use this before sending for a print by a web printing service?
Will I need to increase RAM for this to be effective? 16 to 32?
Good question and I am not sure bc I have 64GB RAM, maybe check with their support to see what they recommend?
Wow, Looks amazing,Jim, I am currently using Topaz Gigapixel for very large prints, this looks like it may be even better, the distant detail was amazing.
thanks much Douglas and yes I agree, those details were insane! 😁
I can't see a difference Jim....perhaps youtube compression is doing it's number on me. I'll try it out though but we need some real use cases. Take a JPG at 1080p saves several times and then passed through this ON1 Resize AI. We need sme real user scenario.
Hi there and yep sometimes it's hard to see on YT. I will likely come back and cover this in future videos, but you can also download a trial and see for yourself how it works. Thanks.
Hey Jim. Impressive results. Have you tried ON1 Resize on low resolution portraits? The reason for my asking is because I have quite a few low-resolution Black and White JPG portraits and family photos that I inherited from various relatives. For example, would it acceptably work upsizing and sharpening a 327 X 396 pixel 0.1MB portrait?
Hi Bob and thanks. I have tried it on some older shots and it definitely works, but it will somewhat depend on the quality of the original file. It does a good job of upsizing and adding detail etc. If you are interested maybe wait til it launches and download a trial? Thanks.
@@JimNix Thanks for the feedback. Really enjoy your channel.
@@bobarchibald9531 thank you for watching!
Looks very good Jim - be good to see a side by side comparison with Topaz Gigapixel AI which does much the same thing.
thanks Nigel and yes that is on the list - I just got Resize AI last night so literally just getting started with it, but do plan to compare them - thanks much for watching
As someone who has used Topaz Giga and DeNoise (for a long time) I can tell you that On1 Resize yields a much better result than the Topaz version, and that was before the Ai version.
@@DaveBowman that's great to hear Dave, thanks for sharing!
@@DaveBowman Yes, I'm keen to see how it performs against what is currently the market leader in Gigapixel AI. I am new to ON1 and playing with the trial version of RAW edit 2022 and if the dreadful erase and clone and stamp tools are any measure then I may be staying clear!!!
Jim, if you have a chance can you compare this product to Pixelmator Pro ML Super Resolution?
Hi Lysander and no I have not. Pixelmator is a great product, although my challenge is that I haven't had a lot of time to work with it lately (day job, Neo videos, On1 videos, etc). So I haven't compared this to that, or Gigapixel yet. But it's on the list for sure. thanks!
@@JimNix Cool. I came across some comments on DPReview that claimes Pixelmator Pro ML upscaling was better than On1 or Gigapixel. Don't have those products so cannot compare. If you do have a chance that would be interesting.
@@Lysander-Spooner I will try and find time to check it out, thanks
Wow, I have also been using the Topaz software and this On1 resize is looking much better then Gigapixel. I would also like to see a side by side comparison. Thanks!
thanks Michael and yes I plan to compare them soon, just got this last night so I haven't had time, but for sure this is an amazing product in many ways!
I am excited to get my hnads on this.
Is there an upper limit to how much I can englarge? Topaz Gigapixel AI has an upper limit of 6x. I have an older iPhone photo that I want to go to grand format . . . to be printed as a large wall hanging banner to be viewed from 10+ feet away. The print shop says it is soft even after Topaz. So I didn't approve the proof. I'm hoping this will be better than Topaz.
Hi Norm, I got Resize AI on Friday night, made a video Saturday morning, and then was tied up all the rest of the weekend. So I haven't tested it against Gigapixel yet. And I am not sure there is a limit, but for sure the quality of the original file will be a limiting factor. I have tested iPhone shots and they look good enlarged 3-4x but when you zoom in really closely, it is not as crisp as a 3-4x enlargement from my Sony (which I would expect to be better). But viewing from 10+ feet away, it might look fine. Certainly test this out yourself and see how it compares. I am going to try and compare it this week. Thanks.
Thanks for this, I use On1 Photo Raw for most of my photo processing these days. As a lot of my photography is birds I do a lot of cropping and I normally just resize when I export. Do you know whether they use the same process for resize and export, or should I be using the resize tool within On1 rather than just resizing when using the export dialogue?
Hi Paul and thanks, and this is different than the standard resizing upon export. This is AI-based and much more intelligent etc. So I would use this once it is built into Photo RAW. thanks much!
@@JimNix That's great, thank you.
@@paulgibbings9553 you are welcome
nice presentation. It seems that you used jpg files, which is nice to know because, for "no noise AI", Matt Kloskowski demonstrated on his youtube channel that, compared to topaz denoise AI, it couldn't work as a LRC plugin for an exported tif but needed to work directly on a raw/dng file (a panel in plugin also mentions that), requiring to change our LRC workflow.
good to know thanks Marc
Hi Jim,
it's completely crazy what the current photo software does. After watching your video, I processed several animal photos I took at a zoo in 2010 and 2018 with both Topaz Gigapixel AI and On1 Resize 2022. The results are so good, at least with Topaz, that I wonder if there is any need to invest in new cameras or lenses? On1 Resize 2022 is still lagging behind a bit, but if the AI version keeps what it promises according to your video, then that seems to get better again. Anyway, it's fascinating how the software development is progressing.
Hi Andreas and thanks for watching. I agree that software is pretty amazing these days, and can help make up for any "deficiency" in gear. I never really used Resize before but this new AI version is spectacular in my opinion so I am enjoying it quite a bit. Thanks!
That’s what I was wondering too. If for example you shot an image with a six megapixel camera and used this software, how would it compare to shooting the same image using a 24 megapixel camera in terms of making a large print and comparing both images to each other. Nobody has done this comparison.
There is a software program called Perfect Resize, where a woman wanted to make a very large print from her cell phone photo. She used Perfect Resize and made a huge print using this software and it look rdgreat. I don’t know how perfect resize compares to this software. Do you or anyone else have any opinions on this?
I have bought the bundle and already own Raw 2022. The only problem is that my camera is the new OMDS OM-1. None of the apps out there support it at the moment. Topaz will Denoise etc though they say it will be better when they finally support the camera. Any idea when ON1 will include the OM-1 in their list of cameras? Lightroom at least will handle the ORF files. Would love to use the new Resize. 2022 will open as Tiff from lightroom so that is something. Would love to be able to drop an ORF raw file in .
Gary S : I've been with ON1 for some time now and their support for Olympus camera profiles is not good, I would use Light Room 6 the odd time and they always had good profiles.
Luminar Neo has the best camera profiles IMO.
Someone posted on the ON1 support forum that support had confirmed that OM-1 support is in next update to PhotoRAW. I guess that means Resize AI will have RAW support for OM-1 as only scheduled for release a bit before the PhotoRAW update.
thanks Gary and per David's comment below it sounds like it is coming, but I wasn't aware as I shoot Sony so I hadn't even thought of that - maybe you could convert to DNG in the interim so you can edit a raw file in On1?
Jim, I thought I would check out this video after watching your comparison with Gigapixel. The results are amazing and I feel also the On1 has more flexibility. The result is
that I've gone for On1 before the preorder option runs out. You are able to instal the current version until the new version arrives. Many thanks for all your work in bringing
these videos which show the pros and cons and save us lots of time in finding out about the image editting software available to us.
thanks for watching Ken and I hope you enjoy using it quite a bit!
So how good does it work on small 72 DPI web photo's to make bigger?
Good question and I have not tried it on that. Quality of input will obviously affect output, as it would with any enlargement product. Thanks.
Dear Jim, can you make comparison to the TOPAZ Gigapixel AI
Yes it is here: ruclips.net/video/50vzsiquyxA/видео.html
Jim, with all the extra features that On1 has, such as an organizer, denoise, and now resize, you’re starting to really sell me on this editor. But, after spending quite a bit of time learning Luminar AI and Neo, I hate to start over again with something new. How do these two editing systems compare? Is there any way you can give us a comparison of the two products?
I'd like to know too. TBH I'm gravely disappointed with Neo. I understand there's a lot of challenges with a programming team located in Ukraine, but at the end of the day I need a fully functioning editing suite, and Neo doesn't cut it right now. Maybe On1 is a better choice overall.
Thanks Steve and I use both, and while there is some overlap, I feel they are pretty complementary to each other. I still use Neo as my main editor, but On1 is a very strong #2 for me because of all these capabilities that you see me demo in these videos. I may do a comparison, or even show how I use them together, but I don't think you have to abandon one to use the other. And while the tools have different names and do some different things, there is also a lot of knowledge transfer that would occur between the apps. So I don't think you would have to start over, technically. You would have skills in place already that will transfer. But On1 has a wider range of things it can do, so the learning curve to REALLY learn it all (which admittedly, I have not done) is longer and steeper (it has timelapse, focus stacking, panos and more). But for basic to slightly-advanced edits, you can jump in and get things going pretty quickly. Thanks and hope this helps!
@@Mechulus I do think it depends on what you really need to complete an edit. I have surprised myself since Neo came out that I have edited a LOT of pictures in Neo without needing to go back to Luminar AI or some other app for a specific feature. Neo isn't perfect of course, but it's coming along nicely and once we have a few more features, it will really be getting closer to feeling "complete". Thanks.
@@JimNix Thanks for the advice Jim. One thing you can pass on to your subscribers is the many discounts they offer. Active duty military can get the base app free; Veterans can get the same for half price; and students/teachers can get a sizable discount as well. It's all fairly easy to find on their website so pass on the info to everyone so they'll know. I just sent them a copy of my DD-214 to verify my veteran's status and I'm waiting to hear back from them about the discount details. I'm hoping I can get the subscription for half price as well so I can receive the entire bundle of plugins for use with other editing apps like Affinity Photo.
