I just looked up the game manual and I was SHOCKED to see that! I had wondered at 1:56:45 if the Barbs had a pathfinding bonus, and it's nice to know that in Heroes 2 Hero bonuses were clearly noted through secondary skills! And "Sorcs love their boats" made me happy 😂
It really has held up remarkably well! I mention at one point that I truly am having fun with this playthrough, and it feels great to know that they got it so right back then 😄
I've never played the first game, it's interesting seeing how much was carried over to HoMM 2 and the changes in sprites. I wish they kept a purple dragon option.
I always wondered how they managed to change as much as they did! The games were released so closely together (Aug 31 1995 and Oct. 1 1996) that I imagine it was pure crunch time for a year. Every creature/castle was completely redone, and so seeing some hero portraits was certainly the least of their worries!
Thanks so much for saying so and your continued support of the channel! I did not remember it being this good, but it still feels like a quality game, albeit with several missed opportunities that 2 and 3 expounded upon. Still, it's bright and colorful and features some familiar faces, so I cannot complain :)
Phixfox you're so cool for playing heroes 1. I really have a soft spot for this game, i adore the graphics and sound. And its were heroes started from, so its something i think more heroes fans should look into playing. Anyways i was glad seeing this in my videos, truly. Have you played the night and magic series? I recommend playing those too, it really makes you appreciate the heroes series that much more c:
The graphics and sound are SO lovely! The ambience and setting makes it a joy to play in a day where people often go for "realistic" coloring in the artstyle. I am happy to hear that this video hit the spot for you :) I need to take a look at Might and Magic! So many have told me I need to give it a shot, and to this point I haven't because of how unfamiliar I am with it, but I will put it on my list :D Which should I start with?
@Phixfox oh that's an easy one! Start with might and magic IV: clouds of xeen/might and magic V: darkside of xeen, the two games can be put together and it's just called might and magic World of Xeen; that should be your first stop. My personal favorite is might and magic 6 though!
@@gettinghelpsoon Your help is appreciated, thank you very much!! Excited for Clouds of Xeen since it sounds familiar due to being featured as a map also!
@@Phixfox Absolutely! You're gonna feel right at home playing might and magic 4/5! The setting is the same one from heroes, so you will see alot of the cast present there too. Its got all the same charm the as heroes' games, that unique touch that makes this series special. Sorry to go on, but i cant sell this game enough! I really hope you give it a try soon!
❤ HOMM 1 is where is started my journey in this glorious game serie… I love how you are just enjoying every single piece of this masterpiece … the sounds, the graphismes were ahead of his time… Paul Romero and the barbarian theme dude !! Simply amazing… no marketplace is one of the worst thing… the combat system is clunky. But man as you say… everything was there to make a great debut !!!! 😊glorious video 😊
Thank you so kindly! I completely agree with you: each component (sound, graphics, etc.) are solid on their own, but together they make a masterpiece 😊 The series evolved in many positive ways, but it's nice to feel how correct they got the formula from the beginning. I am so glad that this video found you and reminded you of your beginnings in the series, it's wonderful in every which way :)
I am hoping to get something set up in the future to do things like that! I think there are a ton of great Heroes players out there and I will definitely win some and lose some, but so long as we have fun it will be worth the time :)
@@Phixfox no sir, thank you, thank you for all the hours of entertainment and making us happy to watch this awesome game, ur the very best sir, and we all love u here online
I missed this until now! The older style cartoonized art-style has some charm, but I truly loved H2's mix of fantasy pallet with bit more edge than what we saw here! All in all, not bas for 1995!!
Probably! I used a wrapper for Heroes4, but I just downloaded this from GoG and played in the tiny windowed mode☺At least the quality on video looked good! Bright colors 💯
Heh I wonder if the problem is that game assuming it needs all the processing power of an older system and thus having not limits on what it uses it. Some old games use everything.
That is hilariously likely 😂 I think the startup of the DosBox indicated it needs to set aside a whole 16kb of processing power and it would be nutty if I was experiencing issues because of that! :D Still, if the game wants that much attention then I will give it what it needs ha
In heroes 1 all barbs start with pathfinding, knights +1 morale, warlocks scouting and sorcs love their boats

Thank you for playing this old gem. Heroes 1 and 2 will forever be my favorites.

Oh, and purple dragons... did they become bone dragons in Heroes 2? We may never know!
i never had the heart to play heroes 1 my self. but i enjoy watching you play it

Okay, having played this one so much as a kid, seeing those sprites again, thank you for such a nostalgia hit!
Thrilled that it's so loved! I forgot how beautiful it is, and I was happy to find out how well it plays after all these years :D Thanks!
