As a person with an "invisible" disability, I cannot thank Paul and his husband Matthew enough for spreading awareness through their RUclips channel and media interviews that not everyone who is struggling with a disability is wearing a neon certificate of authenticity. If you see that someone is going through trouble and effort in their day-to-day lives, maybe give them the grace and respect you would give them IF you knew them well enough to know exactly what they're going through.
My dad was given permanent handicapped license plates for his vehicles after he had a heart attack in 2001. To this day, he still gets people who see him use the parking spaces he entitled to use saying “You don’t LOOK handicapped! Why should you to park there?!” Seriously?!

@@TealBeal11 it is a big deal because service dogs have extensive training to not be reactionary to other animals and to do their job without causing damage. The laws are for Service animals not some persons pet that they decide to bring into a store. Places like Home Depot and Lowes allow personal pets that are leashed to be in the store, but it is against health codes pretty much anywhere for just pets to come into places that serve food especially. The laws are pretty specific and people do care. My cousin has an emotional support dog and she never takes her into a place that only service dogs can go. Her dog is obedience trained but is not a certified service animal.
My ex is also legally blind, with only peripheral vision. He gets the same treatment of disbelief, asked to remove his sunglasses. For fun, he likes to wear googly eyes glasses because people seem to want to see crazy eyes as proof of being legally blind. So much education is needed on the subject of invisible disabilities. 🐶❤️
Was extremely nearsighted prior to LASIK but just a shade above the legal definition. I could tell how many fingers someone was holding up, as long as there was shade and light involved so someone thought I was lying. So I had to explain how my brain had compensated for being essentially blind.
He also has a degenerative disease so as it gets worse, a lot of people have been worried that it’ll get worse since it has been getting worse over time
This gentleman is very charitable. It’s a serious infraction to refuse service to a person with a disability. That he refuses to name the restaurant, call down the damnation of the whole of social media upon it, or sue is a testament to his character. Instead, he spoke to the restaurant manager to enact change. A civilized approach.
I agree wholeheartedly. We all can learn from the way he handled this. We’d be a far better society if we did. Let’s all try to extend forgiveness and grace to each other.

It's not the restaurant; it's the fact that the ADA forbids registration of trained service dogs, so many people cheat and falsely bring their pets to grocery stores and restaurants.
I suffer from brain inflammation but my illness is totally invisible and I look fine and my speech is fine. You have no idea how many people accuse me of faking my disease and accuse me of faking my service animal. Please don’t judge the book by its cover!! I’m not fine! I suffer from brain fog, severe debilitating lethargy, depression, anxiety, memory loss. The biggest pain is not my physical disease but the lack of understanding and support from my friends and family. This is why people with mental health issues commit suicide-we are so alone in our struggle!
Completely agreed, in the same overall situation but different disabilities. I will not even mention how close I have been to ending it or how many times I feel that way. Do not want to depress others or make them lose any more hope than they already have. Honestly, I am amazed I have lasted this long. Been on my own without help since late teens. When you do not even have family and your disabilities drive people away when they realize how significant they are, it is a very lonely existence.
i relate in a different way. i am a high functioning autistic (for those that don't know, we have low functioning autism and high functioning. it tries to rank based on your ability to live on your own basically. high functioning means i am able to live by myself and do most things, but i still struggle). i often mask around strangers, and will hide my suffering. it is an invisible disability for me. it is frustrating to live in a time where knowledge is so fruitful, but many people are still stuck with old values based on knowledge we had from the 50s and 60s! i got my diagnoses late, as most women with autism do. most research on autism was done on men, so women are affected by this. at one point, doctors believed women couldn't even get autism. my family doesn't seem to understand this disability has been there since i was born. they treat me like I'm "pulling the autism card" when i mention it to explain I'm suffering. i wish society was not full of such ignorant people.
@@Chloe-jt4yb That has been dropped in favor of a 3-tier system. ASD-1, etc. With 1 being the least effected. High Functioning has led a lot of people into the illusion that the autism has little to no effect just like the Aspergers diagnosis. However, that just isn't true, you can be high functioning and still have a more severe form of Autism. So, you can be verbal or speaking, etc. (which was usually all that meant) and still be affected. not trying to correct your diagnosis but maybe this will help you understand it a little better.
I’m a regular watcher of Paul’s channel. He and his husband have done so much to educate but obviously there is much more to be done. Glad this is moving beyond the channel. I admire Paul for wanting to protect the restaurant from backlash.

Sir, You are protected by the ADA . I was with a friend and her Guide Dog and a Restaurant/Bar tried to deny us service, saying Dogs are Not Allowed . I knew one of the owners of a restaurant across the street so I called him , he told us to "Come On Over! " we got excellent service there. My friend was still upset . I reminded her that what they did violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. She got LEGAL PAPERS and went back there. We were then treated to a complementary dinner , and I just asked him if he could make that part of their Employee Training so this didn't happen to anyone else. He agreed so my friend didn't take legal action against his restaurant.
The server even said to him “This isnt my first rodeo!”, meaning this particular restaurant has done it before. It was in his original video. There are many humans with invisible disabilities, sometimes even 100% blind people. I wouldnt risk it, but this server thought otherwise.. or didnt think at all.
Why was it heartless? Restaurants has their own rules, it’s a private not public area… never seen the sign “we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone?”

Paul said in a follow-up video that the employee denied him because a customer had brought in a dog the day before with a harness/vest claiming it was a seeing eye dog, but their dog was a pet, not a service animal and the dog caused a lot of problems. Due to that experience, the employee believed Paul was the same person. The problem isn't service animals, it's people lying about their pets and ruining the system.

I work at a preserve where dogs aren’t allowed. I deal with people telling me their dog is a service dog, almost every day. I’d estimate maybe 1 out of 50 dogs is an actual trained service dog that addresses a real disability. That maybe generous. People abuse the service animal law with zero shame.

I bet this restaurant and its employees will start allowing *anyone* with a claimed service dog in. Because that's the only way to comply with the law. I think that also harms people with real disabilities. The law needs to change to enable an easy way to validate service dog legitimacy without requiring private information at venues.

If the employee had been fired, they'd have had no power to make him apologize to anyone, because he was no longer under their control. Also, Mr. Maple is a dog who wasn't in any way harmed by the situation, and didn't need an apology. No, Paul had it right. This is a situation to be addressed by raising awareness and increased education, not by being vindictive.
Paul, being the better person by far, just wanted to try and improve the waiter in an area he was lacking, w/o harming him. More class & compassion than most anyone i will meet.
The victim has a better awareness of what is right and respectful than the way he was so rudely treated. I’m an autistic adult that uses some sign language, and my (other) disabilities are also invisible. I’ve also been treated horribly by certain places in Seattle, but I thought I was the only one that had this issue. Clearly, that’s not the case. Thank you Paul for shedding light on this situation.
Kudos to this young man for being way more patient than I would be. I would have hired an attorney immediately. Hope the employees at the restaurant get the training they desperately need.

People have GOT to stop thinking that just because you love your dog you can take it out anywhere you want, and learn the difference between an emotional support animal and service/guide animal and how the laws apply differently to them. Your pet is not a service animal just because you call them a support animal and got them a little vest, actual service dogs/animals go through YEARS of training not just on how to respond to their humans but how to safely operate in public
How this man handled this situation is a great example for all. He didn't name them online, try to shame them or try to get them "cancelled". He took the time to educate the owner and employees.
Many service dog teams who get discriminated against have tried educating the business. However often the business still chooses to be ignorant of the laws. That is why service dog teams go public about the issue with the name of the business, including any pics/videos of the situation, as well as reach out to lawyers to have charges/lawsuits filed then.
The problem is a person that looked similar to him came the day before and lied about his dog being a service dog… plus those kind of lawsuits cost a lot of $$. They aren’t worth it on a small scale

If you do follow him then you’d have known the news left out a key part of the story. One which literally many people do, faking having a service animal. That’s what happened prior and while the situation was handled poorly due to that negative impact. The employee still shouldn’t have e turned him away. I think also calling the police would have been a fine lesson for that employee to learn they were out of line and asked questions they literally can not ask.
I would have been furious as well. But Matt & Paul & Maple are so popular & inspirational cuz they deal with life's challenges with positivity instead of frustration & anger. Goals!

Shame on the restaurant’s employees for their ignorance. There’s a saying, “You can’t tell a book by its cover,” in my medical field of work, its help tremendously. I’ve had patients that looked great, but then you see their cardiac profile and wonder how the heck are they still walking?
While I get the employee just had someone earlier come in with a ‘service dog’ that went bad. Because it wasn’t one. They should NEVER take that out on the next person and state they don’t seem blind. Not all people with disabilities “seem” like they have it. You can’t look at someone who looks fine and assume they’re faking it given there would be a multitude of reasons for one and they could literally be hiding it too. I do hope this was a valuable lesson for that employee.

The owner apologized and made it right. Not every employee of every company is going to be perfect. What matters is how the owners/managers deal with the employee error(s).

I'm very similar to this guy - - when something happened a few times to a family member who was autistic, I always contact the establishment and share with them that the goal isn't to make you embarrassed or shame anyone, it's to spread awareness. So many ppl go straight to social media, but I would still file a private complaint with the business. The business should give him 6-months or 1 year of free dining
People go to the media or a lawyers office because they have tried to educate the business and the business still chooses to break the laws. So just because someone went to the media doesn't mean they didn't try to educate the business first.
I raised 3 pups for Guide Dogs of America. Part of our job is to socialize the pups by taking them out in public. Once was kicked out of an Outback Steakhouse because of my perfectly mannered guide dog in training who was wearing her jacket. Employees were rude to me.
Paul is a class-act. He easily could have named the establishment and destroyed their business. And as much as I'd like to put a vest on my dog and take him all the places, I know that just makes life more difficult for everyone. It needs to stop.
Blame this on the "emotional support" dog nuts, people who bring their generally untrained pets with them and claim they are more than what they are, pets. People who abused the system hurt the people with legitimate service, well trained for specific tasks, dogs.
Sorry, but you're still missing the mark. People with severe PTSD or severe anxiety disorders, etc. may need a service animal in order to participate in day-to-day life. Don't blame them for people who have NO ACTUAL NEED but just want to take their pooch with them everywhere.

There are service dogs, dogs that are trained and certified, to do specific tasks for people with a wide variety of health problems, both physiological and psychiatric. Service dogs are used for blindness, seizures, migraines, PTSD, diabetes, MS, schizophrenia, mobility issues, deafness, allergies, etc. Quite different than an ESA, emotional support animal, that does not need to be trained. ESA is something that is basically meaningless.
You are not allowed to: Request any documentation that the dog is registered, licensed, or certified as a service animal Require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person’s disability
I look at the dog and determine by its behavior if its allowed to stay. I'm not letting a dog who starts jumping or trying to attack my employees or customers, to stay.
I'm legally blind in one eye, but my good eye sees normally. Only using one eye gives me no peripheral vision, though. You can't look at me and know that I have little vision in my right eye, and don't even ever use that eye, but the Driver's License Bureau knows and has that info. Pretty boy, Mr. Marples!
I have a nephew whose legally blind. But his eyes move back and forth constantly, scanning. He can pick up motion and some other things. He never misses a MacDonalds!
Disability discrimination is on the rise. It's primarily against those with hidden disabilities. But there's folks like this restaurant manager who knows that the blind usually doesn't present with missing eyes where they're sealed shut, so they wear sunglasses, like Stevie Wonder. Most blind individuals presents themselves like this kind fella. Legally, all that management can ask is what purpose or tasks does the dog do that helps them with their disability. They cannot dismiss the person's disability. They can ask them to leave if say, the person claims that the dog is for emotional support, or the dog appears to not be trained and is disturbing the environment negatively. The restaurant owner is fortunate that the guy did not file a charge against them with the Office of Civil Rights, because he saved them a settlement that could have ranged from $10k-$100k. Unfortunately, most business owners and managers will continue with their Ego trips after this, and fail to count their blessings, which for some will result in a costly lesson later on down the road.
The manager apologized and is giving his employees more training. The customer doesn't hold a grudge. But instead of accepting the manager's apology, it sounds like you think the customer should sue.
Paul is way more kind and willing to give grace than I am. He even offered to go back home and bring back documentation if his disability, and he was told to get out and never come back. I’m assuming it was a lower level employee who treated him so badly, if management is the one saying they’ll train their employees better. Paul and his husband are both so sweet and funny and I’ve loved seeing their videos; when he posted this one a couple weeks ago, I was heartbroken for him.
I get that "You don't look blind." comment a lot from people. I heard the full original tiktok. And I kinda don't care if that restaurant apologized and said they would train better. I want to know where/who it was so I don't waste my money on helping pay grown adults who still judge by looks like little children in school yards. Let alone the guide dog aspect. The ableism and harassment of so many power tripping able-bodied people has jaded me I guess. He is a really good person for not calling them out publicly... They got lucky he was the one they mocked and discriminated against.

Paul, I have a question, I am not blind yet, but I am going to be blind in the future. I have been diagnosed with macular degeneration and possibly glaucoma that particular test needs to be redone to verify my question is knowing that I have this to look forward to. Is there anything I can do now or should be doing now for when this all comes to pass it’s just like I have this big exam coming up and I don’t know how to prepare for it. I was wondering if you could enlighten me taking vitamins obviously and I wear sunglasses all the time but other than that is there anything else I should be doing to be prepared?.

My grandmother was legally blind. Having some vision doesn't mean that you can safely walk around without assistance every day.

It's not the restaurant; it's the fact that the ADA forbids registration of trained service dogs, so many people cheat and falsely bring their pets to grocery stores and restaurants.
I suffer from brain inflammation but my illness is totally invisible and I look fine and my speech is fine. You have no idea how many people accuse me of faking my disease and accuse me of faking my service animal. Please don’t judge the book by its cover!! I’m not fine! I suffer from brain fog, severe debilitating lethargy, depression, anxiety, memory loss. The biggest pain is not my physical disease but the lack of understanding and support from my friends and family. This is why people with mental health issues commit suicide-we are so alone in our struggle!
Completely agreed, in the same overall situation but different disabilities. I will not even mention how close I have been to ending it or how many times I feel that way. Do not want to depress others or make them lose any more hope than they already have.
Honestly, I am amazed I have lasted this long. Been on my own without help since late teens. When you do not even have family and your disabilities drive people away when they realize how significant they are, it is a very lonely existence.
i relate in a different way. i am a high functioning autistic (for those that don't know, we have low functioning autism and high functioning. it tries to rank based on your ability to live on your own basically. high functioning means i am able to live by myself and do most things, but i still struggle). i often mask around strangers, and will hide my suffering. it is an invisible disability for me. it is frustrating to live in a time where knowledge is so fruitful, but many people are still stuck with old values based on knowledge we had from the 50s and 60s! i got my diagnoses late, as most women with autism do. most research on autism was done on men, so women are affected by this. at one point, doctors believed women couldn't even get autism. my family doesn't seem to understand this disability has been there since i was born. they treat me like I'm "pulling the autism card" when i mention it to explain I'm suffering. i wish society was not full of such ignorant people.

High Functioning has led a lot of people into the illusion that the autism has little to no effect just like the Aspergers diagnosis. However, that just isn't true, you can be high functioning and still have a more severe form of Autism. So, you can be verbal or speaking, etc. (which was usually all that meant) and still be affected.

Sir, You are protected by the ADA . I was with a friend and her Guide Dog and a Restaurant/Bar tried to deny us service, saying Dogs are Not Allowed . I knew one of the owners of a restaurant across the street so I called him , he told us to "Come On Over! " we got excellent service there. My friend was still upset . I reminded her that what they did violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. She got LEGAL PAPERS and went back there. We were then treated to a complementary dinner , and I just asked him if he could make that part of their Employee Training so this didn't happen to anyone else. He agreed so my friend didn't take legal action against his restaurant.
There are no legal paper for service animals or guy dogs!
The server even said to him “This isnt my first rodeo!”, meaning this particular restaurant has done it before. It was in his original video. There are many humans with invisible disabilities, sometimes even 100% blind people. I wouldnt risk it, but this server thought otherwise.. or didnt think at all.

Paul said in a follow-up video that the employee denied him because a customer had brought in a dog the day before with a harness/vest claiming it was a seeing eye dog, but their dog was a pet, not a service animal and the dog caused a lot of problems. Due to that experience, the employee believed Paul was the same person. The problem isn't service animals, it's people lying about their pets and ruining the system.

And people need to realize that just because they want to bring their PETS everywhere if they don't abuse the system people who actually need service animals will not be judged so.
I work at a preserve where dogs aren’t allowed. I deal with people telling me their dog is a service dog, almost every day. I’d estimate maybe 1 out of 50 dogs is an actual trained service dog that addresses a real disability. That maybe generous. People abuse the service animal law with zero shame.

I bet this restaurant and its employees will start allowing *anyone* with a claimed service dog in. Because that's the only way to comply with the law. I think that also harms people with real disabilities. The law needs to change to enable an easy way to validate service dog legitimacy without requiring private information at venues.

I’m an autistic adult that uses some sign language, and my (other) disabilities are also invisible. I’ve also been treated horribly by certain places in Seattle, but I thought I was the only one that had this issue. Clearly, that’s not the case. Thank you Paul for shedding light on this situation.

How this man handled this situation is a great example for all. He didn't name them online, try to shame them or try to get them "cancelled". He took the time to educate the owner and employees.
Many service dog teams who get discriminated against have tried educating the business.
However often the business still chooses to be ignorant of the laws.
That is why service dog teams go public about the issue with the name of the business, including any pics/videos of the situation, as well as reach out to lawyers to have charges/lawsuits filed then.
Situations like this can be minimized by a business-ending lawsuit.

If you do follow him then you’d have known the news left out a key part of the story. One which literally many people do, faking having a service animal. That’s what happened prior and while the situation was handled poorly due to that negative impact. The employee still shouldn’t have e turned him away. I think also calling the police would have been a fine lesson for that employee to learn they were out of line and asked questions they literally can not ask.

Shame on the restaurant’s employees for their ignorance. There’s a saying, “You can’t tell a book by its cover,” in my medical field of work, its help tremendously. I’ve had patients that looked great, but then you see their cardiac profile and wonder how the heck are they still walking?
While I get the employee just had someone earlier come in with a ‘service dog’ that went bad. Because it wasn’t one. They should NEVER take that out on the next person and state they don’t seem blind. Not all people with disabilities “seem” like they have it. You can’t look at someone who looks fine and assume they’re faking it given there would be a multitude of reasons for one and they could literally be hiding it too. I do hope this was a valuable lesson for that employee.

I had a friend with Retinitis Pigmentosa, almost blind, and she had a guide dog. People are so ignorant about this. He should name the restaurant for sure!

I'm very similar to this guy - - when something happened a few times to a family member who was autistic, I always contact the establishment and share with them that the goal isn't to make you embarrassed or shame anyone, it's to spread awareness. So many ppl go straight to social media, but I would still file a private complaint with the business. The business should give him 6-months or 1 year of free dining
People go to the media or a lawyers office because they have tried to educate the business and the business still chooses to break the laws.

I raised 3 pups for Guide Dogs of America. Part of our job is to socialize the pups by taking them out in public. Once was kicked out of an Outback Steakhouse because of my perfectly mannered guide dog in training who was wearing her jacket. Employees were rude to me.

Sorry, but you're still missing the mark. People with severe PTSD or severe anxiety disorders, etc. may need a service animal in order to participate in day-to-day life. Don't blame them for people who have NO ACTUAL NEED but just want to take their pooch with them everywhere.

There are service dogs, dogs that are trained and certified, to do specific tasks for people with a wide variety of health problems, both physiological and psychiatric. Service dogs are used for blindness, seizures, migraines, PTSD, diabetes, MS, schizophrenia, mobility issues, deafness, allergies, etc. Quite different than an ESA, emotional support animal, that does not need to be trained. ESA is something that is basically meaningless.
You are not allowed to:
Request any documentation that the dog is registered, licensed, or certified as a service animal
Require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person’s disability

I have a nephew whose legally blind. But his eyes move back and forth constantly, scanning. He can pick up motion and some other things. He never misses a MacDonalds!
Disability discrimination is on the rise. It's primarily against those with hidden disabilities. But there's folks like this restaurant manager who knows that the blind usually doesn't present with missing eyes where they're sealed shut, so they wear sunglasses, like Stevie Wonder. Most blind individuals presents themselves like this kind fella. Legally, all that management can ask is what purpose or tasks does the dog do that helps them with their disability. They cannot dismiss the person's disability. They can ask them to leave if say, the person claims that the dog is for emotional support, or the dog appears to not be trained and is disturbing the environment negatively.
The restaurant owner is fortunate that the guy did not file a charge against them with the Office of Civil Rights, because he saved them a settlement that could have ranged from $10k-$100k. Unfortunately, most business owners and managers will continue with their Ego trips after this, and fail to count their blessings, which for some will result in a costly lesson later on down the road.

Paul is way more kind and willing to give grace than I am. He even offered to go back home and bring back documentation if his disability, and he was told to get out and never come back. I’m assuming it was a lower level employee who treated him so badly, if management is the one saying they’ll train their employees better. Paul and his husband are both so sweet and funny and I’ve loved seeing their videos; when he posted this one a couple weeks ago, I was heartbroken for him.

Paul, I have a question, I am not blind yet, but I am going to be blind in the future. I have been diagnosed with macular degeneration and possibly glaucoma that particular test needs to be redone to verify my question is knowing that I have this to look forward to. Is there anything I can do now or should be doing now for when this all comes to pass it’s just like I have this big exam coming up and I don’t know how to prepare for it. I was wondering if you could enlighten me taking vitamins obviously and I wear sunglasses all the time but other than that is there anything else I should be doing to be prepared?.
