Looks like a cool place to be. Did you go through some rough weather on the ferry? Looked like some raindrops on the windows and waves below you. Such great memories you are creating. 🙂
The reason you need to be careful about selecting a safe boat when crossing the Lombok Strait to the Gilis is that though it flows 20% of the water that flows from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. Known as the Indonesian Throughflow this produces strong crystal clear currents and high waves during stormy weather. Your trip took you across the Wallace Line. Islands on the Western side such as Bali are lush and tropical and home to Asian animals such as monkeys, tigers and elephants, while Lombok and those islands to the east are somewhat dry and arid where the wildlife evolved from Australian lifeforms, for example birds of paradise, cockatoos and marsupials. This break was identified by British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) in 1859. The treacherously deep waters in the Lombok Strait are what prevent fauna from crossing over into either territory.
That is so interesting! We had no idea. Makes sense why lots of people experience a rough journey from Bali to Lombok then. Definitely thankful we opted for the shorter ferry journey 😁

Wasn't the smoothest ride but the weather was good!! I think the waves are just big and the boat is small in this area 😂
