  • Noah and I put in on the upper portion of the Etowah River at River Park Kayak Launch just south of Dawsonville, GA on GA Highway 9. We floated through the Dawson Forest and saw some pretty cool old structures. We ate lunch on a sandbar across the river from the convergence of Amicalola Creek. After losing my phone and finding my phone in the river we finally found a spot to camp, 23 miles downstream from where we put in. Needless to say, the fire roasted hotdogs went down fast and easy and sleep was easy to find. We only had 10 miles to do the second day so we weren’t in a hurry. We stopped and hung out in the middle of the river for a while, went off a rope swing, and ate lunch on an island. We finally took out at East Cherokee Road near Ball Ground, GA. We saw deer, a wild hog, ducks, blue heron, turtles. Had a blast navigating the shoals. There were plenty of spots to stop and take a break all the way down the river. I would absolutely recommend this trip to anyone considering it or looking to do something like this.

    Great father-son experience. He will talk about this for years to come. Children love adventure and nature. You are right to say more people, (young) should be doing this. Great video.

    Absolutely great. Unlike a lot of other videos, you included all the necessary info if someone wants to take the same trip. Your kid will never forget this trip. Two Thumbs up!

      Yeah, that’s one thing that I’ve always tried to do. Between explaining where we’re going and on screen labels, I try to give enough clues that someone with a smartphone and google maps can find exactly how to get there and experience what I’ve been able to see. I hate it when people show these crazy cool landscapes and “secret spots” and don’t tell you how to get there or at least leave clues

    I thoroughly enjoyed the YT with your son Noah. What a fine gentleman he’ll be. I moved from Sugar Hill, GA about 8 years ago and moved to ST Augustine, FL. Boy do I miss living in GA where I lived for 11 years. I sold my 2 kayaks when I moved down and I’m now in the process of buying a new one at REI. I have kayaked the Chatahoochi in Suches and also took it down Etowah above Allatoona. I showed a brief part of your video to my wife, me 72 and her 66 now. She said let’s go shoot the arrows and go back up into the Blue Ridge again. I’m stoked and hopefully we’ll find a good weather window to camp too. I’m sorry I’ll have to go back and find your name, but thank you for your inspiration and fine video and my best to your family. With regards, Steve & Pat

    what a great trip! I'm a long time paddler, (over 25 yrs.) and mostly whitewater, but I also like multi day trips in my rec. boat and came here hoping to find a river for the next time I come out east ( I'm in Missouri ) Looks like a good river but what I'm most impressed with is Noah's paddling. He does great I can tell he's a real paddler already. It was so great to watch even though I only came here to watch the river footage. You are a great dad and this is a trip Noah will never forget. I've never brought my rec boat out east but the next time I come out, I might leave my whitewater playboat at home so I can do this river and a few others in N. Ga. I've been doing the Nantahala, Ocoee, & Chattooga for 25 yrs now, and ready to explore rec. boat rivers. I Love doing long multi day trips in my rec. kayak. Thanks for making this and thanks for including the put in and takeout info for us who aren't familiar with the area. this is definitely now on my "to do" list. get Noah a kayak and you'll have room to take the wife with you in the canoe. I already know Noah can paddle this in a kayak with no problem at all.

    3 of my friends and I did the entire etowah in 9 days back in 09. We went through the mine tunnel in day 1 with 5 days worth of gear, crazy times. Dawsonville is my favorite stretch on the upper etowah

    • @southernappalachianrecon
      @southernappalachianrecon  Месяц назад +1

      It’s my favorite stretch too. Cleaner water, swifter water, just enough shoals to keep it fun and interesting but still easy enough to relax and enjoy it. I would love to do the whole river in one trip someday. Thanks for watching 💯🤙

    I've been down from where you put in, to Knox Bridge, where it finally spills into Lake Allatoona. We didn't do it in 2 days though(but we were also fishing along the way)...I commend you for your distance that first day, wow.

      I’ve been through the Etowah River tunnel on a different trip and it is super cool! It is actually further up river from where we put in in Dawsonville. It’s right down river from Castleberry Bridge.

    Not trying to ruffle no feathers , but seems to me that boy Noah would love to not have the camera stick around or film like that and have you speak to a camera, you should do chest film from first person so it can be more personable to Your son. He wants dad time. Not side kick to your adventure of you and cameras trip with history talk. But I'm a nobody so I know my 2 cent doesn't matter. But it's worth asking him, or adding in chest cams?

    • @southernappalachianrecon
      @southernappalachianrecon  Год назад +3

      We go on tons of trips together without making videos, you just see the ones we make videos about so we get plenty of one on one time. You would also probably whine about the video quality of a camping trip filmed entirely on a chest mounted GoPro. He’s used to the camera and doesn’t mind it at all, but thanks for the concern lol
