Sisyphus peered into the mist A stone's throw from the precipice paws Did he jump or did he fall as he gazed into the maw of the morning mist? Did he raise both fists and say, "to hell with this and just let the rock roll"? Let it roll, let it crash down low There's a house down there but I lost it long ago Let it roll, let it crash down low See my house down there but I lost it long ago Well, I let the rock roll on down to the town below We had a house down there but I lost it long ago Lost it long ago Na-na-na-na-na-na-na Na-na-na-na-na-na I'm letting it roll away It's got nothing to do with fate And everything to do with you I'd rather fail like a mortal than flail like a god on a lightning rod History forgets the moderates For those who sit Recalcitrant and taciturn You know I'd rather turn and burn than scale the set of fists, yeah Where's my accomplice? So take my hand, we'll do more than stand Take my hand, we'll claim this land Take my hand, and we'll let the rock roll Let it roll, let it crash down low There's a house down there but I lost it long ago Let it roll, let it crash down low See my house down there but I lost it long ago Lost it long ago Na-na-na-na-na-na-na Na-na-na-na-na-na I'm letting it roll away It's got nothing to do with fate And everything to do with Sisyphus peered into the mist A stone's throw from the precipice paws
I don't normally interpret poetry...out loud anyway...here goes...Mortals are moved off the land they once owned and a part of, like the native Americans before us, we are forced off the land by the rich and powerful mortals who pretend to be gods. The bankers force every mortal to the futile task of rolling a huge mortgage stone up an endless hill. No one is secure upon the ground, no one can be safe with the threat of the massive stone rolling back to crush the town; and to stop this futile effort in protest or revolt would crush us all.
Ystopnow uhhhhkay. Sisyphus however was the Greek king who angered the gods and was condemned to roll a boulder up a mountain, only to have it roll away each time at the peak. Hubris, the great lesson, fate.
I’ve been a fan of you since 2005 and man, I have to say that it’s been amazing to see how you’ve evolved so much since Mysterious Production of Eggs. Much love

I love this- it's attitude is just so let it go and let is burn. The freeing, quaint thrilling and almost melancholiac background music of this song just give the kind of vibe I yearn for in my musical experience. Props to you, Andrew Bird. You effortless mastermind.
The interesting part here at the end of the song, is specially that. It sounds like it never ends, cuz' doesn't do it at all. If you listen the song in repeat, you won't notice when the song ends, looks like it is a long pause, a full beginning.
The Felice Brothers have all solid albums, including old ones not in production. Of course Mr. Bird... I like Chad VanGaalen, a band called Mogwai, none of these bands or artists were there from my entry into music listening, unfortunately I started with metal and grunge music but have since been able to shake those genres for better ones. Love the new folk scene, it's like good country music, which I grew up on country and classic rock from my folks before I began on the music of my peers. Grunge in hindsight and metal both suck in my opinion. Love indie. Postrock isn't too bad either.
Oh, God! I LOVED IT! It made me smile, It made me think about my old loves, it smells summer, it's bitter and sweet, it travelled me back in time, nostalgically...God bless you Andrew Bird!
You think Andrew likes Have a Nice Life, or that this is all just a coincidence? Bird's new album has similar album art to Deathconsciousness and Have a Nice Life have an old demo of a song named Sisyphus.
Very good song. I'm really looking forward to the new album! And I apprechiate the graphic reference to the painting "The Death of Marat" by Jacques-Louis David. Has me all the more intrigued. A masterpiece meeting a masterpiece ^^
I'm going to Kobenhavn in June (for the second time; last was in 2012) to hear him live for the fifth time (most recently in Zürich in 2015). He is the greatest musician of my lifetime. Can't wait to hear him do this live!
I just wanna point out that Have A Nice Life recorded a song called Sisyphus a decade ago for their album Deathconsciousness, which used the Death of Marat as cover art
I just wanna point out that Johann Vogel wrote a book called "Meditationes emblematicae de restaurata pace Germaniae" 370 years ago, which featured an engraving of Sisyphus
4:01 This is exactly the Jacques-Louis David painting: The Death of Marat Ohhmy... So I'm extra curious about the album! (Sry now I rolled through the comments and I see a few mentioned this. I was just soooo soulful :} )

This is a masterpiece. The drums sounds so spectacular, and the space in between all the instruments is perfection. I love it so much!
The drummer and bassist are fantastic.

I'm SO envious of people who can whistle that beautifully. 😢🎶🎵
At the sake of sounding like a type nerd, which I am, the typeface of the word "SISYPHUS" is wonderful.
I feel that though, it's a really nice font
Searched for the longer version of the Allstate commercial song. And here I found! Cool song.
