I’m pretty sure the reason for Sisyphus never stopping is because he does not want the gods to win. He wants to continue, as the moment he gives up pushing the boulder up the hill, is the moment he loses to the gods. Sisyphus (I think) is supposed to be the story of the indomitable human spirit and the will to continue.
Zeus expected him to fail and eventually give up the impossible task, Sisyphus is happy because he never gave Zeus the satisfaction of watching him give up. He defeated Zeus using the only thing humans have that the Gods don't, an unbreakable spirit even when faced with terrible circumstances.
Bro. Zeus couldn’t have possibly thought that Sisyphus would have given up, because the whole point of his ETERNAL TORTURE, was that he was FORCED to roll the boulder up the hill, and if he stopped he would be WHIPPED by the Furies. I’m not saying he couldn’t have found pleasure in the eternal boulder rolling, he just never could have found pleasure in the defiance of expectation, as it would have been impossible for him to do so.
I hate it that people use the “unbreakable human spirit” viewpoint when this story pops up, because it’s that same unbreakable human spirit that’s got Sisyphus trapped in his task forever. That “unbreakable human spirit” is why Zeus ultimately won, he turned it against Sisyphus and yet people act like it’s a thing to brag about
Also, coming back two months later, something I remembered about the myth is that… Hades is the one who got pissed and gave him that punishment… not sure why we were saying Zeus when Hades is the kind of the dead. But IDK
“Each day means a new twenty-four hours. Each day means everything's possible again. You live in the moment, you die in the moment, you take it all one day at a time.” -Marie Lu (Legend)
The life lesson is a lie and is stupid. The idea that there is no meaning and everything is an absurdity is.. well.. absurd and foolish. The meaning is in your maker. Embrace it. To think the universe is a coincidence takes far more faith than believing a mind greater than ours made it
Sisyphus has no obligations and no duties other than rolling the boulder up the hill. Nobody expects anything else of him. There are no dangers and no problems in his life. So here's another thing, in ULTRAKILL, Sysiphus Prime says, "Ahh... So concludes the life and times of King Sisyphus. A fitting end to an existence defined by futile struggle, doomed from the very start... And I don't regret a SECOND of it!" I understand some of where he's coming from now.
Love the journey more than the destination. For we don't know if we'll ever reach our destination. Some might stray away, some might die along the way. But as long as we live in the moment, even a punishment such as rolling a rock uphill endlessly can give us things to enjoy. Thank you for this lesson ❤
I'd like to imagine Sisyphus being happy. Compared to some of the other shit people have pulled in Greek myth, briefly toggling off permadeath doesn't sound that bad.
Sisyphus's struggle reminds me of the same struggle of samsara the cyclical nature of existence. His existence was changed by the gods and yet he still derives meaning from it i think thats the thing that makes me incredibly intrigued with sisyphus the meaning and struggle that allows him to experience those moments of bliss and happiness at their fullest no matter how small they may be.
It's about trying. The challenge. Not to win or lose. To play. It's the very defnition of "It's about the journey, not the desitation." Quite literary. Word for word. Playing forever. How awesome is that?

Forgive me for this *Nerd Moment* but Sisyphus deserved it, 100%. In terms of being an all around awful person, he gave Zeus a run for his money. He was a king and a tyrant, a bloodthirsty one at that. If not for the Gods, he *was* the status quo. This isn't about fighting it, but the pitfalls of corrupted power and a bloated ego. He got what was coming to him. Honestly he was punished for the wrong thing, you'd think Hades would've got to him sooner for the whole "murdering guests" bit (company was *sacred* in Ancient Greece, ever heard of Hestia?). But Sisyphus being punished forever after living a full life is a delicious irony, even if a lot of people no doubt suffered along the way. By most tellings he was also a dick to his wife. What a boomer. The Myth of Sisyphus is not his story. Camus uses his punishment to explore a philosophical idea, without the muddy details that make that message less poignant. Interesting? Yes! Not inspirational.
His one mistake was not keeping his word though. Dishonest. If he just kept his word. Did he actually SAY he'll do something and not do it though? The vid isn't really clear with the context there.
All students should write an essay on 'As a Sisyphus I would'... Here is mine right now. As a Mr. S I would play without the boulder every day while going up, I would learn fun games that make sense to me, like spinning the boulder around 2 axes and sometimes trying to bounce the boulder by using potholes making it an amazingly fun personal time for me. I would make poems on the way to the top of many types but when I am feeling down, I would make horror poems like the one to say while getting depressed and frustrated "Keep on working, Keep on working hard, someday I will succeed and I will never know why!'. I will accept the futility of my endeavour but I will spend a portion of my mind to learn about myself, how I like everything. How I like to hold the boulder, how I like to turn it at every place my path, and how much I hate which part of my journey. I would talk to the boulder knowing the reality of the situation, I would let the boulder know all my triumphs before meeting him/her. I would try to live till I die and I would love to feel it all no matter my preferences on the emotions I feel. I would not forget to make fun of the Gods who punished me, and everyday I will do it better than the last so that any day a God comes to watch me suffer his ears will bleed in anger. I imagine Sisyphus amazingly happy and Gods pissed off living every single day of their lives like rats in a cage. As a Sisyphus I would, I would.
I thought Sisyphus laugh was because at least he knows the problem he has, and has only one problem. We, the living ones, have much more problems and we dont know what is coming our way next time, the fear of the unkown could be a nightmare. Anyways, nice video!

Its about the only thing one can do (or become destined to do) when eternally consigned to a situation or state of being: Accepting one's fate, and learning to derive joy it.
While it may not have been the original intention I have always interpreted, "One must imagine Sisyphus happy", as Sisyphus could only be happy in his punishment in our imagination. We imagine the joy Sisyphus could feel in getting the boulder an inch higher than the last time when from the from Sisyphus' point of view that accomplishment is punishment all the same as falling down the mountain to start again. In a system were the improvement of one's self can serve not purpose other than to further the struggler's suffering the joy in improvement is turned to a greater punishment that the original sentencing.
Im really into philosophy For a long time i was fascinated with immortality or an immortal consious They say it would be boring being for so long, but that never made sense and didnt derive from very deep thought, Infact i realized most people dont really know how to think very deep thoughts, theyd rather just immediately say what they see on the surface So you ask why sisyphus would be happy pushing a boulder for eternity? Maybe youre a musician, or an athlete, or a biologist, Our work takes a lot of studying and understanding, and you may look around, and notice some people dont really find it to be unenjoyable, they take great pleasure in the challenges of their craft To follow ones nature, We are all pushing our own boulders up hills, but the reality is most people cry, and complain, and get depressed about it And even though they complain, the boulder doesnt go anywhere or change, its still a heavy rock just like its always been Even the best musicians feel they have so much more to get better at, Lets imagine an afterlife for a musician, maybe an afterlife where he gets to enjoy playing his instrument for eternity We could stop at that but then i had a thought, it would be hell if in the afterlife you "mastered" the instrument, there would be no more challenge, youd eventually run out of combinations to play But what if in the afterlife its just practice forever? It would be more satisfying to measure your eternal growth rather than to be endgame from the very beginning Sisyphus is happy, because he's in strongman heaven, The rush of pushing the body and struggling is greater than you might think, Most people*** dont believe its a fun way to live, but these same people are usually really dumb, chasing after normality and comfort, becoming one of the "masses" that support all the things that make us ask "how can someone be so ignorant?"
I was thinking about the concept a while back. Immortality, in this world, is seen as a disturbing and boring concept by the huge mass. People seek comfort, and Sisyphus did too. He stopped when he received the punishment. It taught him to not seek comfort because comfort is subjective. Immortality when looked with the perspective you've mentioned is indeed wonderful. It's all about the man's brain. It can make even the worst struggle, a pleasure.
Can I do this? Am I strong enough? Am I able? How much do I have to give? These questions provide the uncertainty necessary for a good and happy life. It really is a most high sense of bliss.
“I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain. One always finds one's burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night-filled mountain, in itself, forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.” ― Albert Camus
i understand the basis of saying religion is a way out, something to cling to, something that promises something positive in the future, but plenty of religions reject the idea of "one day we will be happy if we follow these rules" and instead offer instant comfort and a sense of fullness through markers that are independent of the outside, physical world
that has to be the most depressing ending I have ever heard, endlessly chasing for love, money and happiness, is that what we were put on this earth for, is that why we exist in the first place, just to 'live in the moment' our entire lives were just for nothing, I simply cannot live with the fact that we must search for something that will never come to us, for it will never be enough, nothing is enough to the human thinking. That chase to happiness isn't even getting it but instead just living in the moment. Live our lives to the most as possible, and what do you propose that is, raise a family, eventually that wont be enough, gain money and wealth, eventually that wont be enough, find a new practice that would benefit the earth, eventually that work would wither away and so few would remember it. I do agree with many things you say, but not believing in sanctity and peace, true bliss for our efforts and work on these short lives we live in I cannot agree with
It doesnt mean that you shoudlnt have a goal, and that if you reach it that you shoudlnt be happy, its about being happy anyway, and enjojing the journey. Once you reach your goal, you will naturaly make another goal, cuz humans are never actualy satisfied, and for most people it gose in circles, but the video is about how you can also finde satisfaction and happines in tge whole proces of trying to reach it, and just living. How you shouldnt make yourself belive that only reached goal is what will make you happy, you make yourself happy.-how i understood it
You should make a video about Lao Tzu who says something semi-the-opposite in his "Tao Te Ching" ( I think that's what it's called if I remember right)
man but which moment do we live in. one where we know we could be better, and work towards it. or one where we are now. and be it. even if it is empty and hollow, because it is how we are right now. change is a part of the world, changing our existence. it isnt so simple, but is so simple. i've tackled so many angles of thought. I don't even know whats what anymore.
Why Sissyphus always happy? A few reasons. 1. Is not to allow dark feelings of despair and meaninglessness overcome him. 2. It's actually a psychological challenge of wills against his captors where punishments is not the end of the challenge. 3. Sissyphus wasn't going to give the end game to his captors, the game only stops when Sissyphus is satisfied. 4. When One strongly determines never to give up, he's going to succeed in the end. Where the truth is that he was freed because no one could dampen his challenging character.
but what if this task became one day an easy task for him, with time the human nature of progressing always come to a point of mastering the things that you repeat, than wouldn't he become sad? or bored?
One must imagine Sisyphus as reflective, carving his rock as he's sees fit & heaving it upon his shoulders to carry. Walking in the other direction and carrying the weight of his actions as the same yet changed man, Atlas. There are more directions than up & down, and the only thing blinding us is our own ignorance.

But IDK

Glad you enjoyed it!
The life lesson is a lie and is stupid. The idea that there is no meaning and everything is an absurdity is.. well.. absurd and foolish. The meaning is in your maker. Embrace it. To think the universe is a coincidence takes far more faith than believing a mind greater than ours made it

A legend about the dangers of being clever and fighting the status quo

Just btw life is not all that meaningless as you think my ape defendant bros.
I thought Sisyphus laugh was because at least he knows the problem he has, and has only one problem. We, the living ones, have much more problems and we dont know what is coming our way next time, the fear of the unkown could be a nightmare.
Anyways, nice video!
Sisyphus has to be crazy ripped at this point.
Sisyphus is happy because he knows one day he won’t need to roll it, he will just pick it up.
He doesn't give up, he chooses to keep pushing the boulder holding onto the hope that one day he'll get it to the top no matter how long it takes. As long as you can hold onto hope you can hold onto happiness
Always thought about him getting strong enough to remove the mountain by digging, which in a way changed the destination and would succeed

cool video. Thanks for posting it, made me think about some things👍
We are born to die, but the in-between is what truly matters. The act of pushing the stone is the only meaning. Whatever your stone is.
Im really into philosophy
For a long time i was fascinated with immortality or an immortal consious
They say it would be boring being for so long, but that never made sense and didnt derive from very deep thought,
Infact i realized most people dont really know how to think very deep thoughts, theyd rather just immediately say what they see on the surface
So you ask why sisyphus would be happy pushing a boulder for eternity?
Maybe youre a musician, or an athlete, or a biologist,
Our work takes a lot of studying and understanding, and you may look around, and notice some people dont really find it to be unenjoyable, they take great pleasure in the challenges of their craft
To follow ones nature,
We are all pushing our own boulders up hills, but the reality is most people cry, and complain, and get depressed about it
And even though they complain, the boulder doesnt go anywhere or change, its still a heavy rock just like its always been
Even the best musicians feel they have so much more to get better at,
Lets imagine an afterlife for a musician, maybe an afterlife where he gets to enjoy playing his instrument for eternity
We could stop at that but then i had a thought,
it would be hell if in the afterlife you "mastered" the instrument, there would be no more challenge, youd eventually run out of combinations to play
But what if in the afterlife its just practice forever?
It would be more satisfying to measure your eternal growth rather than to be endgame from the very beginning
Sisyphus is happy, because he's in strongman heaven,
The rush of pushing the body and struggling is greater than you might think,
Most people*** dont believe its a fun way to live, but these same people are usually really dumb, chasing after normality and comfort, becoming one of the "masses" that support all the things that make us ask "how can someone be so ignorant?"
TAT really explained this story well it was easy to understand and really short
5:51 that part hit something inside me so hard
Because exertion and struggle provide a sublime source of bliss and meaning, respectively.
Can I do this? Am I strong enough? Am I able? How much do I have to give?
These questions provide the uncertainty necessary for a good and happy life. It really is a most high sense of bliss.
If u are a Ultrakill fan like me you already knew it
“I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”

i understand the basis of saying religion is a way out, something to cling to, something that promises something positive in the future, but plenty of religions reject the idea of "one day we will be happy if we follow these rules" and instead offer instant comfort and a sense of fullness through markers that are independent of the outside, physical world

that has to be the most depressing ending I have ever heard, endlessly chasing for love, money and happiness, is that what we were put on this earth for, is that why we exist in the first place, just to 'live in the moment' our entire lives were just for nothing, I simply cannot live with the fact that we must search for something that will never come to us, for it will never be enough, nothing is enough to the human thinking.
I do agree with many things you say, but not believing in sanctity and peace, true bliss for our efforts and work on these short lives we live in I cannot agree with
Great observation! Everyone interprets it in their own way, for me I find happiness knowing that “it’s all about the journey” and not the end goal.
