How Accurate is Fan Bingbing’s Costume Compared to Real History?

  • Chinese costume drama 'The Empress of China' was a huge commercial success. Fan Bingbing portrayed Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history.
This drama used extravagant and revealing costumes to attract viewers, but they are far from historically accurate. Let me show you some real examples from the Tang Dynasty to compare with Fan Bingbing's costumes.
Hanfu, meaning Han Chinese Clothing, or as I'd like to call it Han Couture, is what ancient Chinese people wore for thousands of years.
Traditional Chinese Clothes changed from dynasty to dynasty and there exists hundreds of variations.

For my Chinese friends we feel the same way about a British drama The White Queen. All the ladies run around with their hair uncovered. Medieval European women when married covered every hair except for perhaps a lovelock. Veils flowed, trains, flowing sleeves. Producers did not find this modern enough. Yet it's a good story of the House of York and the Wars of the Roses.

Honestly, as long as the costumes are stunning and the story is well-written, I dont mind that the accuracy isnt respected. I'm here to be entertained 1st and educated 2nd.
My favorite "royal" period dramas on both counts (story and clothes) are Marie-Antoinette, The White Queens and The Tudors (Chinese ones are: "The Story of Yanxi Palace", "The Curse of the Golden Flower" and "The Legend of Zhen Yuan")
This week, I'm watching the 1st season of Reign on Netflix, and the dresses are completely ridiculous (the actresses often wear contemporary haute couture at French Henri II court; and so is the story) but it's a lot of fun.
Happy to meet so many fans of history and period dramas btw.

Or how they made them wear corsets on bare skin without a chemise, or how every single woman in the court had some sort of exuberant crown that didn't even match the time period😅. I mean even the simple ladies in waiting wore tiaras not proper of their status🤦🏼‍♀️
I was kept thinking ”this ladies got a time machine somewhere and went shopping!” and the lack of chemise probably was something like ”life is too short with Henry the VIII I shall not waste any second of it on putting my undergarments and just wear this dress from future I got the day The Doctor dropped by on Tardis”, a few moments later ”now that I am about to get decapitated I understand why this gentleman from the future was so kind”🤣
I literally watched only some scenes important scenes because I like Natalie Dormer and Inwas curious about how they will portrait Elisabeth I. But the costumes kept looking more modern with every episode. Anne at least was not the worst in the costumes department Mary Queen of Scots looked like she was taken straight from a catwalk put a crown on and said to act.

Actually this is not really true, at least not in Europe, First look at old Greece especially the Cretan time (400 BC), topless or half topless was quite fashionable. Then the Renaissance (1500, End of medieval times) showing some boob (actually cleavage not boob). Then you have Rokoko (1720+) again with a lot of cleavage and in Germany "Die wilden 20er" in between the World Wars where the people were hungry for life. Then you have the 70's with hippies and the 80's that were definitely not as prude as the 20xx. Sorry to tell you,, but these are only the examples I know, there are probably many more...

Yes, you’ve definitely recreated the authentic look, as seen in paintings and statuettes of that era. As Professor Amanda Hallay, of the “Ultimate Fashion History” YT channel, always says - fashion recreation is about the silhouette. Your beautiful 66-panel striped skirt, with its components broader at the hem than at the top, perfectly recreates that subtle, swirling flare around the feet which one sees on antique statuettes of Chinese goddesses and historical figures. Of course, cutting out 66 flared panels and then stitching them together painstakingly, is probably more work than the average TV company could be bothered with! So they settle for second best, a rough approximation of historic accuracy, plus a big element of Peking Opera! The exposed bosoms and cleavage look very European; all the Chinese costumes I’ve ever seen have high necklines and covered chests. PS someone gave me a beautiful little antique Chinese figurine of a lady in T’ang style costume, and your recreation looks exactly like her.

Historically, Korean women's clothes show their nipples (about 11 years old. After they get married and have children), until they are old, they use their heads to transport things (and the original culture of Africa).
The real Korean traditional costumes are pure white (the Korean people have been known as the "White clothes Ethnic" since ancient times), and women's clothes are exposed (the Korean people show their nipples to represent the beauty). This reflects the ancient Korean people and thoughts.
      VVVV
1910. Japan has swallowed Korea. The Japanese believe that some of the low -level Korean traditional culture and primitive (women expose their nipples and transport things on their heads) are very primitive and backward. The Japanese banned Korean women from exposing the nipples (the traditional Korean costume. Hanbok).
The Korean people strongly resisted. Koreans believe that this is a traditional culture of Korea. They insist on retention.
In the Korean capital city. As long as the Japanese see those Korean women who show their nipples, they will give them penalties and slaps. After that, the Korean capital city gradually reduces Korean women's nipples. They cover the nipples with a piece of cloth.
(But in the place where there are fewer Japanese soldiers. Korean women still maintain the traditional culture that exposes nipples).
Until 1950, Westerners were still taking photos in Korea. A photo of Korean women showing nipples on the street (traditional Korean clothing). In 1970, this kind of Korean traditional culture disappeared completely.

The ancient Korean Peninsula("朝鮮" is the name of China) has always been a place where Chinese territory and Chinese regime. Until 1900.
Yi Seong-GYE 李成桂(1335-1408) established a Chinese local regime on the peninsula . He is very sure that he is the descendant of Chinese immigrants (Yi Seong-GYE 's father is the Han people - Chinese).
Yi Seong-Gye 李成桂 leads some Chinese people to establish a Chinese local regime on the peninsula (Chinese royal family and nobles). The aristocracy also claims to be HanChinese. They use the Chinese emperor as their parents. Tribute to China like other Chinese cities.
The founders and royal members of the ancient Korean dynasty (Joseon) were Chinese. They spoke Chinese dialects and official Chinese language. Use Chinese characters. Wearing Han nationality clothing. Building a small Chinese palace on the peninsula (Gyeongbok palace景福宮).Royal members use Chinese coins. They bring Chinese culture to the Korean Peninsula.
Koreans are called as slaves (become subordinate civilians). They were wearing pure white (no dyes and technology) and women showing her nipples as beauty. This is the traditional custom of Korean .
However, the Chinese emperor on the peninsula has always forbid slaves and indigenous Koreans to learn Chinese language and Chinese characters. Koreans use indigenous language (Korean language). There are no character (until the 15th century). Almost all of them are illiterate. No coins. The trading of ancient Koreans has always been carried out in the way of exchanging items. (Until 1910).
Until 1895. China was in a war of foreign invasion.China loses the right to control and protect "Joseon ". 1900 was occupied by the Korean Peninsula in Japan. The Japanese abolished Chinese language and Chinese characters.
The Korean language and character (invention of the 15th century) of indigenous language began to popularize on the peninsula.

nice video! I guess the clothes back then probably weren't as bright and didn't have as much good colour as in the period dramas. Probably very hard to make good dye back in the day. But the historically accurate clothes probably look a little boring for TV.

im very well versed in it, no it was very bright but in a way kinda pastel colour, instead of vivid eye straining color.
empress of china is very accurate in terms of extravagance, some are very accurate, some are semi accurate, some are mixed of many different trends.
the mistake is just using weird colors, cheap gold hairpins, cheap flowy fabric, weird silhouette when they could have use accurate one and it still looks more or less the same.
the more i study this, the more accurate this drama is, just some weird mistakes. but yeah budget its definitely at play here, they can't even rent the right set 🤣, the set is HAN DYNASTY palace in 220 BC painted red instead of Tang dynasty 700 AD palace.

Is the drama's costuming a more provocative version of the qixiong ruqun you covered earlier? Or is it still very different?

      @FiveThousandYears  5 лет назад +6

That's right. From what I've seen, a good portion were modified qixiong ruqun, which wasn't a thing during this period. The rest were more like a mix of random elements sewed together.

In the Chinese historical dramas that came out in the last few years, including Empresses of China and Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace, the colors on the costumes are vivid, bright & varied. I imagine that the dyes at the time were based on natural sources, such as vegetables and minerals on silk and linen blends. How do the actual colors compare to that we see on tv? Thanks!

Many Chinese historical dramas that came out over 70 years. . It is only short of time on RUclips. Many Korean historical TV dramas are also plagiarized in Chinese historical drama (including Chinese historical drama in Hong Kong and Taiwan). Korean history TV dramas are almost fake. They directly copied Chinese history and culture.
