- The historical revival performance of one of the most virtuoso Rossini's operas "Il viaggio a Reims" (The Journey to Rheims) took place in 1984 in Pesaro, Rossini's hometown. The opera was performed for the first time in 150+ years. The cast was phenomenal: Maestro Claudio Abbado managed to collect together 14 most celebrated Rossini singers of that time. The audio recording of this performance has been released by Deutsche Grammophon.
Here Samuel Ramey sings Lord Sidney's aria 'Invan strappar dal core' in the most astonishing way. British colonel Lord Sidney is secretly enamored of Roman poetess Corinna (who's obviously very much aware of that) and sends her flowers as a token of his admiration. The amazing flutist on stage is Wissam Boustany. I know this aria has already been uploaded but my copy has better quality.
Translation:
In vain do I strive
to tear the sharp dart from my heart;
ever more vigorously grows
the passion in my breast.
Timidly I conceal the prayers
of my faithful heart;
No, there is no anguish
more cruel than mine.
Chorus:
As from heaven at early dawn
sweet dew falls on the flowers
and stores up vigour in the green stems,
may the gracious favour of the merciful God
ever shower, smiling thus,
on the divine lady, on her noble heart.
Lord Sidney:
Sweet and tender,
chosen flowers,
be interpreters
of pure love.
Chorus:
Who has ever yet seen
a more lovable lady?
To merit she ever couples
grace and goodness.
Lord Sidney:
At the first sight
of the divine goddess,
one whose heart is capable
of a pure affection
rapidly feels
ardour spring forth.
This faithful grieving
heart of mine
will always throb
with love for her.
(Makes me want to say: "For God's sake, dude, don't be so upset, no woman can resist such singing!") Видеоклипы

Sublime! Bravo, Sam!!!!!!!!!!
I am utterly blown away in speechlessness at how stunning this is in every way. Sam Ramey is a god - period.
The greatest Rossini singer ever. It's so unusual to hear such flexibility and agility in a bass. Brilliant!
Arashi110 Do you have Ramey's version of "God Save the King" from one of these Il viaggio a Reims" productions? It was on RUclips, but has disappeared.

Ricordo questa esecuzione. Da allora mi sono fatto inviare dalla Fondazione Rossini di Pesaro, tutta la partitura dell'opera, per imparare a memoria la parte solistica del flauto...non si sa mai! Amazing Wissam!
È mai capitato?
The ONLY Lord Sidney on record.
The finest baritone of many a generation.
What low note does he hit at 5:35?
It's an E.
