As someone who has overplayed this album album for years, the closest thing I can get to reliving the beauty of my first listen is to watch someone else enjoy it and be surprised by how well produced and atmospheric it is.
Kiss Land, fundamentally, is a very honest confession of the male psyche. It admits, with full vulnerability, the dark things that lurk in the masculine consciousness. To me, it is a sober, real moment from the perspective of a fallen angel-esque figure. I.e. a young man lamenting his own machiavellian behavior, understanding that he does so out of a desperate need to compensate for the beauty and wholeness that he was not born with; in his own mental calculus, he must choose between such an existence and nothingness. "I chose the life...."
Im so happy you love the title track, its so dark and scary so some people dont like it as much but in my opinion its his top 10 weeknd songs of all time. Same goes for tears in the rain, a fantastic closer
I used to not like it but it crept up on me and sunk its claws on me and now i cant get out of it, i love the song but I believe belong to the world is a bit better imo
Dawn FM was released almost a year ago but only now I'm realising that it's really similliar to Kiss Land, not in terms of the sound, but about the concept, transitions and etc...
Damn, no wonder Kissland and Dawn FM are 2 albums i NEVER get tired of listening to. I love the story in both... Adaptation is about him choosing Famous life rather than building a life w a girl who he thought was the one.... Dawn FM is him in purgatory looking back at his lifes decisions and he revisits that decision to choose his career and the fast life and if it was the right decision
If you want to understand what kissland is about read below. This is a long explanation of all tracks which i wrote quickly so pardon any grammatical errors. Also most of the explanation is what kissland is about but I sort of interpreted in my own way a bit. Kissland is about him blowing up after his success with trilogy, and highlights his tour life which is why this album is japan themed. It talks about how he adapts to leaving toronto for the first time in 22 years and explores the world as he tour. In order to cope with these changes he relies on women or and hard drugs in order to get used to this new lifestyle which he references this lifestyle in the track Kissland", where he also warns people about the dangers of his lifestyle where he says "this aint nothing to relate to" referring to his lifestyle. Then he also has to decide whether to become a grand superstar or to stay at the level of artistry he is at currently. He already has a girlfriend which truly loves him for who he is yet he chooses the superstar life leaving his true love for a life of fame which he references in the track "adaptation" which is him leaving his gf and adapting to his new life. He highlights his new perception of love after sleeping with countless women who only want him for money and fame and the idea of fake love or "professional" love in the tracks wanderlust and professional where both parties benefit, with the weeknd using these women's bodies to cope and these women suppressing their issues with the materialistic values and fame the weeknd provides for them . This new tour lifestyle skewed his perception of love in wanderlust where he sympathizes for the people who truly believe that true love exists and warns them about the truth based on his experiences. The women he meets are on tour are women who portray this fake love in order to fill the void that the weeknd has since he left on tour, as it is portrayed in "belong to the world" where he is in vulnerable state in need to fill this void he falls in love with a stripper he met in japan, yet he knows she isnt a person he should fall for, yet he still wants to make her his girl and embrace her while knowing the consequences, obviously in the end it doesnt work out. Next he reminisces in the track "the town" about him returning home and saying that the girl he left will always take him back whenever he needs her every time he is done performing and she waits for him and doesn't move on to another man staying loyal to the weeknd. Yet in the track "Pretty" his old girlfriend has found a new lover as this hurts the weeknd ego knowing what he said on the track "the town". His ex decided she deserves better and stops being used by the weeknd and moves on. When the weeknd find out he shows his anger and toxicity where he ends up in his mind imagines murdering the man and her in the music video. In the track he basically says he is better then her new man and she can never feel as pretty with him as she was with the weeknd. But in the final track the weeknd comes to his senses, he realizes his toxic behavior and admits that he has exposed his bad side and can never return to how it was and that his ex deserves real love instead of being a sex toy to the weeknd. The moment he left for tour is the moment his chance at real love in his eyes vanished as the new girls on tour and at his new height of fame only want him for his money and fame yet his ex loved him for who he truly was as he said in lyrics " They all feel the same, adjust to the fame because no one will love you like her ( the ex) its pointless like tears in the rain). He admits his regret yet he accepts this part of him happily bc he still wants to rise to the top and become a superstar but he has become aware of his wrong actions and knows he was in the wrong.
I didnt really like the Weeknd before this dropped, the hype around him was crazy. Me and my friends were driving in the city (NYC) late night 2am and one of them put the album on. That album made that car ride one of the best experiences with an album. Ill remeber that forever. I became a fan off one listen. Went back and heard his earlier stuff which was the Trilogy, man I love this journey Ive been on. And welcome to the journey!!
My favorite album of all time. Everything on it is perfect - the vocals, beats, transitions and the most important - the overall *atmosphere*. It helped to get me through dark times and still helps me overcome my problems. It doesn't need Drake tho. Probably the most underrated album ever.
This is most Def his most experimental album in my opinion. It’s soo many sounds and soo much going on in the background so you’ll find something new every listen. Abel is the only one for me who can pull off a 7min song. he always keeps you intrigued and a little anxious about what’s coming next
People who are listening to this album for the first time are the luckiest to ever live , this album is so so emotional, i feel like i should be reborn to listen to this for the first time You did a great job reacting to this , its not an easy job to not get mesmerized by this album cheers!!!!
Abel always loved 80s culture so Wanderlust was definitely a precursor to his modern sound. It's something he always wanted to make. Funny how you said it's gonna be stuck in your head, because when it came out my ex asked me "why the heck do you keep saying precious little diamond" 😂
Hit the nail on the head on "Live For" I find myself usually skipping that song when I listen to the album. Just takes me out of the emersion. Still really love Kissland!!💚
Abel was at a strange time in his life. Being thrusted right into fame from near homelessness. He said that raw fear is riddled throughout this album. I think it’s almost tangible when you listen to it
I’m so glad you enjoyed kiss land it’s one of my personal favourites of his. also abel is a cinephile so everything he makes he tries to make it atmospheric and movie-like. if you haven’t checked out the trilogy mixtapes in their entirety I highly recommend it! he’s definitely a concept person so you can see a story throughout every project and a huge overarching story for the weeknd character throughout his entire discog
A masterpiece of its own ! Cinematic, Creative, Unique and simply just the most precise production for its time. KISSLAND is a vibe of its own XOTWOD 🔥💚💚💚
This was the album that made me fall in love with The Weeknd as an artist. The timing of this album when it dropped and a Korean foreign exchange chick I met in college was so oddly specific, the music just reminds me of that time. Especially that “belong to the world” video capturing the vibe of how I felt. I remember having the wanderlust remix with Pharrell on repeat because it reminded me of that girl lol ahh man the memories, music truly is a Time Machine
it’s so refreshing to see someone genuinely love this album on first listen and actually get into like that. i’ve played most of these tracks for a lot of my friends and they do not get the appeal, at least not immediately. this album is truly a masterpiece and i love seeing all the love for it
for some reason, i loved this one from the moment i heard it. i'm noticing more people are warming up to it now. he sample's emika "professional loving" in opening track, her track is awesome as well. this is a more cinematic album. it's different than much of his other stuff. love in the sky is my fav. the atmospherics of this album make it feel like it is from another planet. it's cold and surreal. that track is for me the prime aspect of this whole album. another underrated gem. and simply unique. i feel it feels it was made to be a gem for weeknd fans, and less so for the masses, the vip's hahah. also, the cd is a really cool work of art if you can find a copy🤘🏼
Unfortunately nowadays there aren’t much albums to sit and enjoy from first tract to last one. It was and still an amazing experience to play this album fully
I remember downloading this as soon as it came out, and I was shocked that more people weren’t on it. It was then that I realized that The Weeknd at the time was a vibe past the dark border most people don’t like crossing. Oh no the album was received very well, he just marketed it terribly. Seriously, half of it was marketed with Japanese imagery and literal fucking porn, not to mention he marketed it as like it was gonna be BBTM and not the sequel to trilogy, so naturally it flopped.
Honestly if you have the time listen to this album with the genius lyrics up it really helped me understand it. You’re so right that you can visualize the album, it totally is atmospheric and it’s own world. Also, it’s nice to see a reactor who knows when a piece is gonna take more than one listen to fully comprehend. Awesome reaction and can’t wait to see more Weeknd reactions!
Nice video. I also watched your other video and I remember you said that you only heard Starboy,After Hours and trilogy. I recommend another ones of his projects called “My Dear Melancholy” which is pretty much if you were to mix starboy and kissland togetber
I don’t love this album as much as a lot of XO does but I do think Kiss Land has some of Abel’s best lyricism of his entire discography. Like the entirety of Professional and especially Adaptation blow my mind with how poignant and deep the lyrics are. And I don’t mean “14 and deep” deep, I mean deep in how layered it is. Abel just fucking rocks.
I still think kiss is his top 3 projects Imo top 3 -HOUSE OF BALLONS -THURSDAY -KISS LAND I'd put After hours at #4 kiss land is jus that album i would kill to listen to it for the first tym again - those samples especially of ADAPTATION and that beat switch on kiss land was so immaculate and that belong to the world beat ,man, there is alot 😅 i truly LOVE this album. If it wasn't for Drake it would probably be my second favourite Weeknd album..crazy how i love Drake's verse on THE ZONE and think it's his best features of al time and then he do this to kiss land lol. ..sad this album never got any commercial success and surprisingly Pitchfork gave it like a 5 or a 6 god i hate them for this It's his most experimental album imo the world wasn't ready for kiss land , sometimes I wonder if things would be different if he dropped this album now lol you should definitely check out MDM that ep is special to my heart Loved your reaction also best of luck for the future ♥️
Kissland was the first album I listened to by The Weeknd and I had a similar reaction to you, I was instantly in awe of it and felt like it put me in a trance. It’s one of my favourite albums of all time and I feel like without live for it would be a perfect skipless album for me. It’s still heavily in my regular rotation almost a decade later.
Let’s gooooo this is my fav album from able just cuz if the time I listened to it and the story and he got influenced to Make dawn fm from this he said in an interview
As a day one fan of The Weeknd I love your take on this album!!! I hate that anyone who catches on to this album now does not get to go back and experience the Kissland tour. It was incredible.
I don't think you're bad at articulating your thoughts or words. It's just what is coming from you, trust in them . I really enjoy your reactions, your presence, your voice , actually all. Still doing this. I hope you the best. 🔥🔥🔥
I'm late, but even the deluxe version sounds really good. That one has a remix version of Wanderlust, that one gives off totally different Instrumental style vibes. And another song featured there called Oddlook, man, thats tough. Kissland really is a overall great album.
fun fact: belong to the world uses a big sample from machine gun by portishead and portishead is one of abel's main inspirations which i didnt find out til a few years ago
Love this!!! This is my favourite Able album, im glad you got to it in such quick timeframe too! :0 Keep making this authentic chill content and im going to eat it up!! Dogbless :)
New sub. Love the content. This is in my top 3-4 Weeknd albums depending on the day really. It gets overlooked for whatever reason. Fucking love it though.

Bro wonderfully described.
What a comment..
Over the years since it’s release, Tears in the Rain became a top 3 Weeknd song for me of all time.
Tears in the Rain hits different after watching the Pretty music video
It so beautiful
100 percent
Maybe even top 2
It’s so catchy! “They all feel the same” XO
Im so happy you love the title track, its so dark and scary so some people dont like it as much but in my opinion its his top 10 weeknd songs of all time. Same goes for tears in the rain, a fantastic closer
Such a good track and imo this is easily his best album. So atmospheric
Facts mine too 💚🔥
It’s a top 3 Weeknd song for me
Top 4 for me.
Yup.
This and Dawn fm are his peak specifically with his overarching story
I've found my people haha. KissLand and Dawn FM are his most realised albums, and two parts of a perfect whole.
Your right, also i feel similarity with valerie compared to the after hours album, if u listen to the whole of trilogy valerie stands out
Damn, no wonder Kissland and Dawn FM are 2 albums i NEVER get tired of listening to. I love the story in both... Dawn FM is him in purgatory looking back at his lifes decisions and he revisits that decision to choose his career and the fast life and if it was the right decision
I always describe the Weeknd’s lyrics as “beauty in simplicity” he manages to say so much with such simple language. Super evocative
agreed

*This album was inspired by the works of Phil Collin’s 1981 album “Face Value” Kissland is so cinematic. Easily my favorite album of his*
In the words of JD;
Man kiss land’s so special man.
This, and Thursday, are my absolute favorite Weeknd albums because of how cinematic and challenging they are. I love your Weeknd reactions. 😍
My dear Melancholy should be next and glad you liked this album. ❤
Yes we want that.

"it's so good at building its own world" - you described this album perfectly
adaptation will forever be the best song on kissland imo

Adaptation transitioning into love in the sky 🌌 is truly everything . This album is such a vibe
i understand why this is his least streamed but man its still underappreciated just by how he created the vibe, kiss land is my favourite track!
love seeing people enjoying kissland
XO
Adaptation is my favorite The Weeknd song.
Also love the Blade Runner vibes in Professional
Live For is probably the least liked. I believe that most people would say that Drake didn't really fit in the song and I can agree.
The song as a whole doesn't really fit with the album, feels like a random throw away track
@@darthmisogyny3828 the beginning of it does, but the rest doesnt
Nah he does Abel just embracing the tour life and drake fits at the time of the album
live for is the only song i skip from this album
I feel like he would've fit better if he kept his voice down like he did in "The Zone"
We love a queen who listens to requests ❤

This is his best album and im a day 1 fan. I actually made it to his show in Charlotte for this tour, it was in a smaller theater.
Adaptation is still in my top 3 the weeknd songs ever 👌🏽
wanderlust is still stuck in my head til this day

This album is what made him go into POP music even though seeds were planted with Wanderlust. When you listen to Trilogy, listen to the original mixtapes rather than the compilation. That's the way Abel intended for it to be heard.
^ yes
Honestly if you have the time listen to this album with the genius lyrics up it really helped me understand it.
