***** he's got a point. for 62 thousand you're going into BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes money. That's a big statement for something that doesn't have doors, a windscreen, or any type of things that these luxury cars offer. It seems like they will only appeal to the rich as most people would just buy something else for that money. If they could make these for 20k like the slingshot then it would be much more reasonable. Seeing as its a small thing with not much welding and equipment needed to produce, it should definitely be cheaper than a car. Sure its performance oriented but so is a dodge challenger and they only cost 30k. It just doesn't make sense other than greed that these things cost this much.

62k is insane. The zx14 is only 15k. That's valuing the vehicle at over 45k without the engine and drive train. 45k+ for the rolling chassis. My guess they are tripling their money on each one sold. probably more.

    • @RB747domme

Chase Burns the trouble is, it's the certifying and homologation that costs all of the money.
They can build one for less than 30 grand. But they have to spend an awful lot of money on development test, crash testing, writing lots of vehicles off to make the government happy. And then once they've done that they have to make sure that the department of Transport are satisfied with all of the safety features for road use. Lots and lots of development that has to be paid for, so sadly that's what it comes down to.
And not just for the US government either. They've had to do that for all of the export government's that they hope to expose it to, which is probably cost them a couple of million. So in order that they can pay for the development, the manufacturing, and then a viable profitable company, with a profit on each vehicle, that's what they have to sell it forward to start off with.
You're paying for the development history, not the manufacturing future.

I had one of these for about a week. A buddy who I used to do some work for when I was a dealer tech asked if I could store this beast in my garage for a week or so. Needless to say, the whole neighborhood had a pretty good week. I would wake up at around 5 am to get it out when traffic was at a minimum. Worth the money? Hell no! It's not worth half of the cost, but it was a great time for sure.

Watch a few of Jays other videos and you will see manufacture reps that almost embarrass the company by knowing very little about their product that Jay reviews (cough cough Porsche GT3 cough cough)

Well, I was pretty messed-up, spent 8 months recovering in the hospital, so, I saw her point. I dont understand why it has to be so expensive. Lotus can deliver an actual CAR for $20k less.
I would kill to own such a vehicle, after a turbo at 250-300 hp this thing would blow the doors off of just about anything. But with such a high entry level it will take 30 years for them to depreciate.

Expand those thoughts to slightly more expensive-to-you options and get a real driver's car for your money, that will cost to maintain and you can sell for what you paid. American muscle is still cheap, and will be for a while yet. If you like to drive on public roads look at older Japanese or European. Really collectable stuff is being flogged in North America now. Carve it up in a Lotus or BMW 3 series, and you won't go back. Datsun 300ZX. Cheap!

There's a reason it's that price. The company has invested more money than you can fully understand to make these legal in every state. They have to make that money back and let's face it. They aren't going to be selling to many of these to casual customers. So they have no choice but to price them high and go after the elite market. It's a high priced toy and people with big money have no problem spending that type of money on cool toys if they know most people will be priced out of the market.

As mentioned, they've already been around more than 15 years. But it's what's called a 'niche market', so they aren't expecting to have a huge slice of automotive pie any time soon.

I love the t rex.. its my dream toy. My absolute must have vehicle. I just hate the front end, it looks like a boat or something... not very attractive, although, the aero 3s custom shell turns this trike into something amazingly sexy. It also adds lamborghini style doors, aerodynamics, windshield, side windows and a legit dashboard with a sound system. Its amazing.

It's the dogbox. Motorcycles don't have sychronizers, they have dog teeth engagement, wide spaced teeth. When you engage them, they will clank like that. The benefit of dogbox transmissions is that you don't need to use the clutch to shift, just lighten on the throttle to unload the teeth and it will go right into the next gear without pressing the clutch. A quickshift will do that for you by retarding the timing so you can just slam gears. SOURCE: I ride motorcycles and work on race cars.

If you can afford a brand new corvette, odds are you can afford to buy this too. You don't buy one or the other. You buy both.

Those tires are the best I'd ever owned only lasted about 15k before the inside tread ( toe in) was down to steel but the BFG g-force line of tires r incredible got sticky super fast and could launch a 400hp 3200lb car with hardly a chirp when warm

Better spaced seats than the vanderhall that you've featured. However, the price is a little bit too up there. For $62,000, you'd get a fairly new mustang!

nice. but I think the 3 wheel bike design market (spider or something?) costs a lot less... but the name t-rex is cool and you can't go wrong with a bmw motor. 65k though... an exclusive club. Probably only Jay Leno has one of these.

Hey Leno, we love your vids bud and all the cars you show us but honestly I think most of us are tired of new cars, electric, hybrid stuff. We are here to see what we cant today, your vast collection of antique racers, muscle cars, track cars, road cars etc. I mean those are what made cars great, not all of this stuff today where most cars are soulless. I mean we freak out when a car actually turns out semi decent looking today, Challenger/Corvette/F458 etc but underneath they just dont compare

Mine was $53xxx.xx I choose to stay loyal to my Kawasaki. I know some people say the price is insane, yes I see that point. I also hear that at the race track when people comment me on my track bikes. Google Ohlins forks and shocks for Kawasaki motorcycles and you'll see how a properly built race bike can easily double what you paid for the bike alone. I'm happy with mine, right away I took the saddle bags off lol.

Elio Motors will have done a lot of legwork for this company to make driving in the T-Rex helmet-free legally in many more states. Funny thing is that it remains to be seen whether Elio Motors ever becomes viable.
