The scientific literature documents a range of responses, at the time and in retrospect, depending on the nature and context of the interaction. Sociogenic harm likely explains discrepancies between positive responses at the time and negative responses in retrospect. Efforts to understand and reduce offences should therefore be made in tandem with efforts to understand and reduce sociogenic harm. That's a matter for empirical study, albeit a tricky one.
That said, I take the view that it would be irresponsible and immoral for an individual to decide to engage in a seemingly salubrious interaction on the assumption that if any harm arises it will be down to the prevailing socioculturally relativistic orthodoxies. Far better not to put people's long-term well-being at risk at all.
