- Learn to ride a skateboard at 40, 50, or even 60 years old. My advice for the absolute beginner. A subscriber a asked me to do a video like this taking it from the very first step. Thanks for Watching
me watching this as a 24-year-old complete beginner thinking I was late to the party like 👁️👄👁️
Not late at all👍
Literally me 😂 turning 25 tomorrow tho 🙄
I bought my first board amtwo weeks ago at age 36. Been raining since so I haven't had a chance to get on it yet, but im looking forward to it.
33 yo, looking forward to get my on first board later this year))
37-y/o complete beginner here
61 and started skateboarding 6 months ago for the first time. Started working on my bowl riding found your videos helpful thanks
Right on👍 thank you for the comment😁
👍
Dude, i'm 62 and skating my rampos most every night, good to hear from another over the hill! Keep it up, and use pads lol.
50 🤙👍
Oh damn already skating the bowl and here I am thinking I am late to the party at 31. Rock on brother
I'm 42, 200 lbs, below knee amputee. Used to skate a lot, I lost my leg as a teenager so I learned to skate as an amputee. I used to be an ok skater like 18 years ago. Just started again with my six year old son. This video was great. Thank you sooo much. I'm just carving and tic-toc-ing and having fun.
Living the dream... thank God you can still skate. 🙌
Skating with our kids is the best..
I’m 39 learning to skate with my son thanks for the support
Right on thank you also for the support on this channel.. I appreciate the comment 👍
Wear a helmet! 🙏🏼
Good to see guys putting this out there. Skating is fun for everyone. No matter how old you are.
I'm 39 and I'm going to start learning to skate in June. I hope it helps get my confidence with speed up and ready to hit more challenging runs when ski slopes open up again. No more corona couch potato time.
@@ashleyarias7444 we just bought skateboards today! im 41 and im willing to learn boarding with my daughter and son hope we will learn faster and safer
The “Risky Business” way of determining goofy vs regular is genius.
Thank you... I thought that was clever.. Lol 😂
I tried it and pulled a hammy...
Signed 50 year old dude.
@@punkfingerboards6283 lol, I certainly understand that.. That really gets better over time if you keep at it slowly.
That's how they teach goofy/regular every place I've ever learned riding skills at (whether it be skating, surfing or snowboarding)
I’m gonna have to agree. I’ve been explaining the stances to friends who wanna learn to skate for years and that’s the best one I’ve heard yet.
I'm a 35 year old woman learning to skateboard and this was the best instructional video for beginners I have watched. Now I just have to learn to look cool around all those teen guys...
Trust me a 35 year old woman on a skateboard looks hella cool 😎... Congrats on living a quality life ✌ Thank you for the comment 🙏
🙋♀️34 year old mama here! Learning with my boys 😆🤙💕
@@kristabradleymusic you're awesome mama.. your kids are very lucky 🤙😎
Because it's cool

Teen boys at the skatepark have been very sweet to us. Scooter kids are another story 🤣
Skating is helping me curb my drinking. I think I can actually quit this time. Anyone out there, pray for me please...
Edit: I'm so happy to know that I'm in your thoughts and prayers. Taking time out of your lives to send me hope means a lot to me, thank you brothers...
You got it buddy.. one day at a time👍🙏
449 Jane Drive Just turned 39, I have skateboards but bought a new one and I’m back out there at 5’6’’ 300 lbs, losing weight fast. Keep up the hard work.
Praying for you skate pal! God bless you.
You can do it my man...
It's vice versa for me.I can't skate for shit unless I am drinking but that's just me.Power to you bro ONE DAY AT A TIME
I haven't been on a board in about 30 years, but I decided that I'm sick of waiting to do the things I love. I'm still in decent shape for a 50 year old and I don't want to die with regrets over not living while I can. My son is 13 and it'll be a great thing to do with him as he learns. I appreciate the scripture reference at the end, too!
Right on Kevin good idea to do it before he gets any older. It happens so fast. 👍
47 years old, skated for years as a kid, but dropped out around ‘99. Gave up so many other sports due to injury, cost or lack of time over the years, but just decided to buy a new deck for the first time in decades on a whim. Taking it easy, never going to hit a 720 varial on a vert ramp (never could even as a kid), but just enjoying being back on a board.
Best point this video makes is to keep things within a decent safety margin - nothing discourages new skaters faster than getting into a situation which terrifies them and then taking a fall.
Oh, and one thing he fails to mention when talking about kick turns is “the board will go where your head and shoulders point” - practice by literally pointing the hand on the side you’re turning (left hand if turning left, etc.) to where you want the rotation to end up and follow it with your head - it will automatically cause you to rotate.
37 and just bought myself a new board. Not skated for 20+ years. Thanks for the inspiration bro!
Rik sorry i missed your comment. I'm stoked to hear you got the skateboard ready to go. That's half the fun maybe even most the fun in the very beginning. Stoked for you.. Are your wanting to skate bowls?
Rik you still skating?
@@solo909 i hope so
About to turn 41 in less than a month, I skated very little when I was probably around 10, and seeing this video definitely gives me the motivation to really give it a go this time. I'm not looking to do tricks or anything, I just want to enjoy the world around me as I cruise on. Just ordered my first board, and can't wait to bust my ass but feel accomplished. Thanks, man!
Im 42...making a comeback. Landed a nollie late flip today in dc.
Sweet man congrats.. 👏
That is very cool man! Can’t wait to get there.
I'm about to be 42 as well, getting back into it after 28 years
jimmyjr103 That’s me !
Yo I’m 40 and learning again in dc too! I don’t have shit back yet tho
I was just past being a poser in the 90's. Nothing crazy but I could ride a park. Coming back at 44 finding fundamentals like this I never focused on as a rubberband kid, gives me hope I'll be more confident when I practice. Thank you for easing my mind that old guys like myself will be supportive of my effort to return.
Not just old guys, most people will.. skip those night sessions until you get more comfortable.. mornings are typically OG hours👍
Great vid man! 56 and fighting Renal Cell Cancer and haven't Skated or Surfed in 30 years. Coupled different Cruising boards are ordered and on the way! Your messaging is very inspiring, especially your messages formulated from your beliefs man. God Bless and I will be getting out of the proverbial sick bed and back out skating on God's Green Earth when they arrive. Keep it up Brother.
Respect, as a renal cell survivor as well your comment inspires me to stop thinking about skating again and just get out and do it.
i'm a nearly 59yr old ,live in the uk,been skating since my fortys, and still shredding. So glad theres other older skaters, thought i was the only one,as i get mocked a bit, probably more common in the states though, never skated a bowl but built my own 4ft half pipe in my back yard, nice vid dude
That's so rad.. To think I still have so many years left its amazing.. Keep shredding and never slow down..
Wow thats cool to hear
@Susel 61 now,still skating
I landed my first kickflip at 28 years old. It was AMAZING!!
Congrats, that's a huge accomplishment.. 👍
Crazy to realize how hard skateboarding truly is... I give everyone over 30 much respect for taking it on for their 1st time!
35yr old army vet, and this has been the toughest thing I’ve ever committed to. But very fun and taking it slow and safe!!!!
I’m 56 years old and started skating again a couple of years ago.....first time on a board since I was 12. I bought a drop-down longboard and use it for commuting to and from the train. People hear me skating over the sidewalk pads before they turn around and see me with my messenger bag briefcase slung across my chest. I love the puzzled looks on faces!!! Attorneys and paralegals half my age walk into my office and say “dope board”. Hahaha
Very inspiring and very solid advice. I'm a 74 getting my first board. I have a lot of experience with balance sports so I'm entering with lots of confidence. Still very active with snow sports and off road motorcycling. Can not wait!
That’s really inspiring
I'm 52. Wear a helmet...everything else you break can be easily fixed.
Never rode a skateboard...48yrs old....bought a skateboard, wanna learn to ride....watching you so I can learn how..
Skateboarding is a great way to burn calories. I started when I was 8, I stopped when I got ill at 28, recovered, then skated consistently until I was 46. Stopped for a year and missed it too much so started again. I am now 52 and I'll quit when I can't physically do it anymore. Advice to older dudes starting out. Definitely wear pads! Your body will thank you. Remember you're not 80 lbs anymore. Baby steps, don't be a hero, those days are past. And if you try to skate vert you won't be running out of anything like you can on a mini ramp. I can't stress the pads issue enough. Don't just wear them, actually practice bailing on purpose regularly. This sounds stupid, but it helps build your confidence. Finally welcome to the brotherhood! skating is the most frustrating and rewarding pastime you'll ever experience.
Great comment, sounds like you have a good history in skateboarding. Ifully agree on the pads topic. I would be in bad shape without pads right now. Thanks for the comment 👍
It really burns calories? Heck, I guess anything you do to get out of the house and on your feet, would do that to some extent though. Like any sport, is it good for your mental health too?
Excellent mate. I'm 46 and just purchased my first board. Haven't really ridden it yet but will try what you have shown. Always been into skateboarding but never given it a go, and now my daughter is into it I am looking forward to getting out there with her.
Totally stoked to here you say that.. Take it easy at first 👍
Cool. How's it going so far?
I'm 46yrs young. And thinking of learning to street skate. Wat do you think? I Skated a little in my teens. I am a regular electric skateboard rider
Kris Tomkinson I’ve had some good soft falls , thanks to knee and elbow pads a must!
a back of knee ligament pull so far .. 🤞🏻
I’m also 46 and getting a board. I skated in my teens. I’m siked and also nervous.
@@stoneymasonp8163 me too the 46yrs young club 👍. Thinking bout this
All your tips are right on. I picked up a board at age 41. Some people think I’m crazy because I keep falling off but it’s such a fun sport. You don’t need to ride too fast and fancy. I challenged myself to learn little backside kickturns on a mellow ramp and it’s going great. Flat ground is your friend when you’re learning. Tic tac all day long.
Good for you Chris👍glad you're skating again😁
Thanks man, im 35, used to skate when i was 16, now learning all over again.
Your welcome,, Good for you I'm stoked you're back on the board.
Kool man, its funny how one forgets, but always still has it buried. I hope your channel takes off. Like and subcribed. Keep stayin kool homie

I just turned 40 and I'm learning to skate with my 8 year old daughter, this video was great! Love the calmness and yet still enthusiastic! Thanks!
Thanks Philip 👍
I haven't skated since 2004 brother..i was never good but i enjoyed it.. right after joining the Marines i shipped off to iraq, after multiple injuries during my tour and 9 months of physical therapy , i had arthritic knee and lower back ,lost nerve on left leg and topped the scale at 309lbs. My 20s were nothing to be prideful about i gave up skateboarding, actually gave up on alot . Now i am 33yrs old , lost 160+pounds and ready to get back on the board..I have fear of getting hurt as i am unbalanced due to my injuries from war but i went fully loaded and bought knee pads , wrist and helmet. I also mentally prepared myself to just skate with no tricks for a year. I started by buying a razor scooter this past month and after your videos i just saw , i bought my skateboard. Keep grinding brother , excited to show my son its never to late. Excited to also give me some joyness in my life. I currently work at a job where i wake up every morning and emotionally and mentally commit suicide . Riding my bike and scooter to work has helped .i cant wait to see what the board hold for me .stay blessed and thank you for this video. Bought a 9x 33inch board / 60mm wheels.
That sounds like a perfect set up. Can I do a video response to your comment? I'm impressed by you 👍 congrats for that weight loss.. 😮 you're a winner man keep it going..
@@ProdigalSuns of course brother ..i bought a landyahtz board 9*33 and a santa cruz
9.3 * 31 with 60mm slime trucks..both boards were on sale as complete and cheaper than a custom board. Always thought that was funny, spent all that time in the desert only to be air lifted off a snow covered mountain shortly before my ETS date!
That was nearly 10 years ago. I'm just now getting back on the bike and board again, it's great therapy as well as PT!

Good advice. But number one is to get a skateboard and ride again. I just turned 57 and got back into skating more regularly almost three years ago. It has been a blast. Meeting new friends and go to cool places, but mostly feeling alive and young. Keep rolling.
We are in Tampa house hunting, getting ready to move back from Germany. Our kids ride scooters and I ride my Evolve electric skateboard. We found a great skatepark where everyone is super nice! cheater281 it's funny the things I like now in skateboarding are the things I said I'd never ride. Lol
You're skating so you're awesome what ever you ride.. 🤘
Just bought my first longboard, I'm right handed but after your advice realized I'm goofy footed. This will help immensely with my beginner riding. Thx!
That's awesome... yeah it's going to help you big time congrats 👏thank you for the comment

@@ProdigalSuns Thanks man. ::)
Any update on this? How the shredding progressing? Not sorry for the necro
So good to find your channel. I’m 40 and bought a skateboard to spend time with my son.
Perfect reason to start congrats👍
38 after ankle surgery and two meniscus surgeries in both knees. Back on a skateboard. Thanks for the vids!
Woah, glad you made it back after all that. Have you been skating your whole life. Or were these just random injuries?
Prodigal Suns I skateboarded as a teenager and some in my twenties, but there were basically no skateparks around where I lived. Recent injuries mostly from motorcycle accident. I’ve been on a longboard skateboard just carving around and some surfing last few years. Now riding a 8.25 board (180 lbs), I can barely ollie anymore, but really progressing on mini ramps and mini bowls around where I live now. It’s also a great workout!
@@alexvan1346 right on👍to me ot makes life better... I live skating and begging a skateboarder.. we are the coolest dudes👍
Hey thanks for this video. some good pointers. I haven't been on a board in 27 years (43). I feel like I need to loosen my body up and practice alot to get this going again. Im so stiff on the board. Bought boards for my kids the other day and they havent stopped since they got them. I really wish i kept skating all those years its such a great hobby.
cool I still remember how I felt about my first board.. I put it where i could see it from bed as a child.. Its so awesome you'll be able to share it with your kids. Get some pads and go for it!!
Great video. Just ordered a long board and a land paddle to skate in NYC will be 55 in August and I find that simply being outdoors and moving makes me happier during this pandemic we are living with. Feeling much better just to get out and walk and next week skate. Thanks for making the video.
Thank you, sir! 42 here. Learning to skateboard to keep up with my daughter on her scooter.
Tks man ,just turned 57;
and back at it .tks for the Pep talk.
Man, that is really inspiring. I'm nearly 48 and because of spine and back problems and arterielle problems there is not much left for me, at least what will be fun. I alsways wanted to skate but " life " intervened. Now I have a lot of free time and I' give it a go.
Thanks fot the inspirational video.
Skateboarding for me has changed everything.. ride the type of board I'm riding in my latest videos maximize your fun out of the gate.. 👍
@@ProdigalSuns Hey, thanks for your kind and incouraging words. I looked some of you last videos but there are a few differnet boards you ride.
The G-Bones 64mm wheels seem like a good wheel to start. I'm nearly 50, weigh around 200 pounds and have a13 inch shoe size. I've seen the there is aPowell&Peralta Board out that's called the A.Anderson Herron board, 9.13 ( there are smaller versions, too ) Did you ever try this board or would you recommend such a board like this to a beginner ? Just asking,..there is so much stuff out there and for my first setup I don't want to drown too much money down the drain.
O.K., I will look up you latest video...and I'd be glad if you'd find a few minutes to come back to me. All the best,... stay safe !
I’m 38, I must say the video and the content of it is inspiring...
I appreciate the comment homie ... Do you skate street or transition? Or just learning transition?
47 thinking about skating again. this vid is super inspirational. thank you
