OMg! Love freakin snowboarding! Took lessons 6 years ago and have been hooked ever since. Just wish I could find others my age in the area. So, for now I'm about to start longboarding next week.
I started Snowboarding around 15 stopped in the 90s and got back into Snowboarding at 48 after not being on the snow 25 years and I’ve got back into B.M.X.. 😜
38 and took up quad skating 2 years ago. Just this month taken to the ramps and bowls. Found myself wondering if I'm just being silly and that I'm 'too old' but then came across this. I'm NOT too old. Hallelujah x
+Little Berlidders Consider long milage, same as a road bike or inline skates. Consider learning switch kicking and you will be able to do just that. Ambipedal skill set is very possible. It is more accessible than pole vaulting or swimming butterfly or even Mogul skiing. If you have the desire to switch kick and use both legs for propulsion follow us and we will teach it. Radical skating is fantastic. But imagine you wanted to fit on a bike, you'd learn to spin and ride a rod bike right? BMX trick and flip is fantastic as well, but intervals and fitness on road bikes is fantastic and so too is endurance fitness on a board. Same as you learn to drop in, you can learn switch kicking.
+lambchopxoxo If you ever enjoyed Point A to Point B fitness skating consider learning to switch kick on a deck for fitness only or take up a notch and consider learning SpikeBoarding. Neither sport is an acrobatic sport. Both of them are same as speed skating on ice and Nordic ski. A dedicated focus on the development of stroke and speed. There never is a moment you "go for it" . Same as swimming butterfly or cycling a bicycle with great fluidity. There are only three women in the world spikeboarding at the moment. There is no QOM or Queen of Mountain as of yet in SUS stroke, stand up spike stroke. Where is she?
I know! who in their right mind would give this a thumbs down? why because they aren't skating at a pro level? who cares these women are inspiring. I'm wondering are some of the women related to skaters? Is Tamara related to Brad Bowman? and Eva is she related to Lizzie?
Yes. You should take it back up again. Don't listen to the hater's. I'm fast approaching 56 and I have no intention of stopping my Skateboarding yet. So grab your Skates and get out there. 😈👍👍👍
This is so great! I'm a skater in Wyoming and last Summer we took a skate trip to California. We saw the lady with the Barbie doll on her helmet at the Etnies skatepark in Lake Forest. I thought she was SO inspiring! Keep killing it, ladies!
I used to skateboard as a teenager. I started again recently. A couple of years ago I got back on my skates too and started Derby. I'll be 50 next year. This woman is awesome.
Great video, its so good to see these ladies skateboarding in their 50s and not letting anything or anyone hold them back. Thank you for posting and sharing.
I’ll be 55 in Oct and asked for a skateboard for my birthday lol. I have been wanting to get back into it for decades. I heard there is an unwritten rule that when one falls that other skaters do not laugh. Knowing that may give me even more courage. You ladies are so inspirational
Deb Hale I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago and found the courage to get on. I did fall and my back is killing me but Im getting back on. Its was so much fun. I just found this vid. Happy Birthday month. Mine is next month and I will be 53.
So great to hear this. this is a story of those who need release from whatever melody you have, depression, grief, stress, this is also a little bit about fresh air, freedom, following the beat of your heart...does not matter what stage of life you are at. Besides , moving our body never kills us!
I’ve never seen anybody laugh after watching someone else take a spill. Falling is part of the process. Everyone falls. Turned 60 a few months ago and been riding since I was 13. As long as my body allows it, I keep getting on the board.
This is awesome! I started skating when I was 14, then stopped and forgot about it for 35 years. At 51, I got back on my board again because of my sons, who are skateboarders. They encouraged me to do it. Since then, I haven't stopped. I skate almost everyday. I'm 54, and I love skateboarding. I would like to meet these ladies!
+Barbara Odanaka Truly inspiring the world needs more people like you !! To hear you starting Skating again to take you back to a happy positive confident place in your mind to help with being a mother is amazing , Lots of women feel lost during and after birth and could really learn from what you've done to reconnect with yourself. Keep having lots of fun .Cheers Ricky
It.s so awesome to see grown women skating. I have, what kids today call a vintage board, a 90.s. Tony Hawk Powell Peralta. I LOVE it. I hadn.t used it in a long long time until my son was 4 and I wanted to get him on it. He wasn.t interested at all 😢 so, along with a brand new deck and the rest of his gear, I put it away. I.m in the process of losing weight that I put on due to stupid antidepressants and can.t think of a better way to shred off the weight. I haven.t skated in a long time but have been slowly getting reacquainted with my board. Skating is a great core builder and great way to get out of your head (screw the meds!). I.m back at the stage where I can ride but have to watch out for whiplash cracks (and pebbles) on the pavement and still use my foot as breaks. I can.t wait to get better again🍸🍸🍸 Cheers from SF Bay Area!
How AWESOME! I skateboarded in the 1980s. First deck was an Alba, followed by a mini Lance Mountain, then a Tony Hawk. Now into inline skating in my mid-40s, I could skate all day everyday!
Skateboarding feeds the soul. I am getting closer to 40 now and love skating more than ever. I have five kids and drag them all to the skate park. I live in CO. I was touched by all the places you donate because of your events
Just got a board again at 56. I am trying to go early mornings ...just in case i end up falling. Having issues pushing off ...there is a trepidation there that I never had as a kid. So glad I saw this though it renews my resolve. I should have never stopped skating...
I know exactly how you feel! I'm 57, and I just bought a longboard and a land paddle. It's super fun, and your feet just stay planted on the board. I only push off to get started, then use the land paddle to keep going. Have fun out there!
I'm 34, a man, and just discovered skating. I was amazed at how, when I watched Skateboard Cow, she made me feel like a sense of being accepted was inevitable so long as I committed to accepting myself.
+Vidpow Hope they can keep it up and investigate SWITCH KICKING or speed skating on longboard and of course help tell the story of SpikeBoarding and SUS / Stand Up Spike. Both innovations that are bing brought on by the last of the boomer generation.
I love it! I used to skate, too, but quit after having my first kid. I felt "weird", like I didn't belong anymore since I became a mom. :C This gives me hope.
I'm so absolutely happy to see im not alone in this. though being on the east coast in Nj I have only been able to watch as the numbers of young girl sk8ers has increased since i moved here from NYC back in ;98! I got some kids together along with my nephews who i encouraged to get into boarding and about 13 of their sk8er friends and we finally got the city council to build the first concrete park here in this area!! it was such an amazing accomplishment! unfortunately, it's nothing like the parks on the West coast...yet! but, i would like to see a massive concrete park with, bowls, and quarter and half with plenty of space and transitions like the ones you guys enjoy in the video, i would love to accomplish that...a huge concrete perfect sk8park here in Northern NJ!! Thank u guys for being there. I came across your video looking of remedies for a problem with my truck so i could get to fixing her and there you guys were!! I'm so stoked and cant wait to share this with my boys!! have a good one and "i'll be back!" P. s. Before i got my ride I'd sk8 to and from work winter, spring, summer and fall! It was my/our primary mode of transportation. i purchased all three decks at the same time and we're still sk8ing to this day, my nephews and I!
I am a mother of two young kids. I got into skateboarding when I was 44 :) It's one of the best discoveries! I am probably the only skateboarding mom in the small city I live. just wish I didn't have to skate on my own.
+Alexa Skates Well...that is a doozy, but I.m SURE there.s some kind of skating community near you. Maybe if you Google a skate shop in your area, you can at least get information to the nearest skate community. And as Barbara said, we are here too!
This is an awesome story!! I started skateboarding at the age of 10 in 1977. I just turned 54 and my daughters started skateboarding, after jumping on their boards I have found myself looking at getting one of my own. I keep using “I’m out of shape and falling hurts more now”. I think it’s time to follow the lead of these amazing ladies!!!
I’m a 39 year old mom of 2 boys 13 and 9. I live in small town Iowa, but we have 2 skate park options. My start has been slow but I’m killing it this year! I’m learning tricks through Braille Skateboarding! I didn’t even expect to find youtube vids with mom skaters!
Barbara Odanaka, The Sisters of Shred and AARP - thank you thank you thank you. I picked up skateboarding when I was 50-51 and left it within one year ... for the most stupid reason ever. My husband, son, and myself went to a miniscule indoor skate park in Singapore with teeny ramps and drop-ins. I fell on my butt coming off the slightest ramp. Nothing really painful. Nothing hurt. Two days later, the hubby, son, and I were in the bathroom - naked - and all of a sudden the two of them started yelling "Mom/Sweetpea!!! What happened to your butt!III It's all BLACK!!??" And so it was - just black and blue from the fall. I can't believe I quit skateboarding because of an ugly butt! Meanwhile, my now 24 y.o. son is a boardman extraordinaire! Totally inspired and inspiring. thank you
This is so inspiring! I have been dying to learn to skateboard for the last 10 years. I'm fit, but I am 38. I was worried that I was too old, but now I know I am NOT too old! THANK YOU! I just received a free, brand-new beginner board today and I am gonna do this!
+Higher Grace We agree HG, imagine women taking the sport into the endurance theater as it could and begin to speed skate at a world cup race level with switch kicking?
its nuts. kinda the same with me. I just turned 37 and hadn't been on a board since I was 14 but got out my old alva that was in my shed to go skate with my daughter and it was like riden a bike. long story short. I rebuilt mt old board and I skate with my kid now [and alone] and it takes me back to being a kid again......love it #Sk8orDie #BeeLayZmoN #JayAdamsRocksMySocksOff
Love this! Wanted to skateboard for a while now. I've just turned 50 so now I have no excuse! Accept along. Is in UK may not be as cool or common as in the US 😊👍🏼👌🏻
Barb!!!! You're SUCH a POWERHOUSE Earth Angel!!! I just smiled all the way through this video!! LOVED the picture of you pre-13 with Cindy to your left and Denice to your right. God always puts you in the right place at the right time. You were an inspiration to me in X-Country! Wherever you go, you excel - but most importantly you are an impetus for pulling people together. Sending you much love- this video was beautiful ... just like you! XO
man this is awesome!! I'm 28 and kinda gave up on my dream of skating a bowl a couple years back when I sprained my ankle up pretty badly. After watching this you guys have really inspired me so much! You ladies are so awesome! THANK YOU! :D:D:D Jess Sydney, Australia
Jess Pace Injuries are very likely to happen when skateboarding, but that is also a way to learn. Also, skate to the level where you feel safe, and have fun!
Wow your all incredible ladies. Wish I skated. Always loved it would try a few times. But her me in a dirt modified race car and I'm fine. Get me on a board and in scared as hell. Go figure I can drive a race car but scared to skate. Rock on ladies. Your all an inspiration. My son wants to start skating. He's 8.
+Alysia Salter Alysia, consider helping to teach him switch kicking. Once this is in his skill set move on to all other activity. He will be commuting on a deck for the rest of his days if he learns switch kicking. If he does not , never will he commute on a daily basis kicking on one leg. Rest assured of this. Shredding, street and vert all rule only none of that skill set will get you commuting as a 30+ year old to work. Learn switch kick well very early on and you have it can can forget about it and best of all use it to get around forever. We had to learn it at age 46! :( No fun to learn moment languages late in life. Much more fun to speak them all very early one and have them ready to use. Stokes unlike tricks never leave you. We lost all our Vert and Radical years ago. Learn a propulsion stroke and you will never loose it.
This is just like how video games was seen as a kid thing but as those kids grow old it's become for adults. Same with rock and roll or punk rock or hip hop or any number of things that young kids started doing when it was new and then got older. In modern society there are so many new things being created all the time and older people are set in their ways...so it seems like these things are for young people but really they are just novel and the young are open to new experiences enough to try them...then they get older.
This is so cool. My son was trying to teach me. I need to get some elbow and knee pads and helmet. I get scared to put 2 feet on the board unless I'm holding on to something... but I know once I do it I will feel FREE!!! so inspiring. I'm going to have to get back on the board.
As I told my son, "everybody eats pavement, keep your helmet on and just have fun." Fear of falling or looking silly just holds you back. If anyone laughs, give em the finger because that.s not what skating is about. Most real skaters will give you tips or just give you praise for trying. Time to let go.....🍸 I.m back at square one so I.ll let go if you do🍸🍸🍸
Ummmm..... I NEED a helmet! ! :) my son really is super encouraging. He asked me if I had a helmet and pads would I feel better... ummmm YES!!! I gotta learn to roll!! :)
This is awesome...i recently started surfskating at 50 years old...its great to see others at my age doing the same thing...but you girls are better than me...🤣😂🤣😂...nice work girls
Yes! I started longboarding in my mid-40s and I really enjoy it. I even made a video about it! I wish there was a club for older ladies who like to skate in my town. Of course with lockdown, I'll probably just continue to longboard with my kids until the world opens back up! 💖🛹👍🏽
Dude this channel is being greatly inspirational. I am a 40 year old recovering addict and codependent who's wasted most of his life doing sh!t I don't like to please f*ckerz who never gave a half cr4p if I was happy or not and I am trying to try my luck into the art world or any other stuff which impassions my soul
I thought I was the only one. Lol, I'm 52 and I ride longboards and practice on skateboards but mostly longboards. I loved this video.
Wooow lots of really cool people in the world. The next time I feel it's too late for me to do anything, I'll remember you guys
I love seeing this kinda stuff 52 and skateboarding it’s amazing keep it up 😊
they should give these ladies their own show. it would be cool to watch this show
Agreed! :)
I started snowboarding at 42....never quit....still riding at 55

Beautiful story, I started at 37, 41 now and droppin in higher walls. So much fun. Way to go ladies. You all are awesome. :-)
incredibly inspirational. i'm 35 and haven't skated in years. just picked it up about a month ago during quarantine. god bless, shred it up!
I’m 48 and haven’t skateboarded since I was 15. It was my favorite sport. I’m glad to see more adults keeping it going!
I started at 7, my aunt gave me her board. Still got it. Haven't skated in a year due to injury at work, but anxious to get back on.
Sorry about that if you are okay sharing what happened to you at work?
+INFINITY X GAMING Hi, still in healing process.
I just started skating last January at the young age of 51 . You women are an inspiration ❤…
Started back up at 52 after almost 20 years of absence! Loving it!
Great job AARP for showcasing this great story. Nice to see you drawing outside of the lines.
Super! Finally found other moms that shred! Ok, I classic skate, no jumps.

I am a mother of two young kids. I got into skateboarding when I was 44 :) It's one of the best discoveries! I am probably the only skateboarding mom in the small city I live. just wish I didn't have to skate on my own.

Jess Pace Injuries are very likely to happen when skateboarding, but that is also a way to learn. Also, skate to the level where you feel safe, and have fun!
This is great! Oh my gosh! - you ladies are very inspirational! :)
In modern society there are so many new things being created all the time and older people are set in their ways...so it seems like these things are for young people but really they are just novel and the young are open to new experiences enough to try them...then they get older.
great stuff, really just great!
Time to let go.....🍸
I.m back at square one so I.ll let go if you do🍸🍸🍸
Ummmm..... I NEED a helmet! ! :) my son really is super encouraging. He asked me if I had a helmet and pads would I feel better... ummmm YES!!! I gotta learn to roll!! :)
+Rockfitness Camp
Well.....cover your head in old school maxi pads and smoosh a ball cap over your head.
Cheers and you can do it!
+Rockfitness Camp YES HELMET PLEASE! Find me on FB!
+Rockfitness Camp Wrist guards at all times, never get on a deck without them.

Quit scating at 17, now I think I am able to start skating again as an adult woman.

Yes! I started longboarding in my mid-40s and I really enjoy it. I even made a video about it! I wish there was a club for older ladies who like to skate in my town. Of course with lockdown, I'll probably just continue to longboard with my kids until the world opens back up! 💖🛹👍🏽
