Been my EDC for a couple years. It works perfectly for most things I need it for.. I have cut multiple ppl out of seatbelts, after car accidents with this knife. It is sharp enough to do it with ease and I can switch blades in 2 seconds in an emergency situation. I believe your review was honest and I can appreciate your points. I also know my experiences with this knife and I for one love mine.
I’ve carried this as an EDC knife for a few years and it works perfectly fine. As someone who has zero sharpening skills, it allows me to have a competitively sharp knife with any knife on the planet.
I've had one of these for a little over 4 years now, not the onyx but the razorlite edc and it's still going strong. I'm a contractor so for opening boxes, cutting rope or tape and other basic stuff it works great... I also use it to strip wires a lot since I always tend to forget my wire strippers. But I do use it multiple times a day 6 days a week and have never had a problem with it. You definitely wouldn't want to pry anything with it or try to use it as a screwdriver, but other than that it should handle most of what you throw at it.
I had the OG one they only sold at Lowe’s at one point. Not only was Lowe’s the only place that carried it and it’s refills but they only carried the freaking orange one 😩
My buddy was dressing out a deer with one of these and snapped off the blade. He said the next few minutes were nerve-wracking with a loose razor blade in the carcass. He went back to his fixed blades.
you’re mistaken @metalcomplex the steel is extremely sharp, one of the sharpest kknife i have! longevity not so much but easy to get sharp again if need be
I'm honestly impressed that you decided to give this guy a review 😂 Great review as always. Outdoor Edge has a larger version of this that a lot of guys I know use on hunts. But I do think Outdoor Edge meant for this to be marketed as an EDC knife.
This knife is perfect for guys who use their knives at WORK to scrape, pry, dig, etc. Things you shouldn't use a knife for. Who the hell breaks down boxes all day? I work with guys that use knives wrong more than they use them right.
This is like saying a Ferrari can’t go off road so therefore is a bad car. It just serve a specific purpose, and unless you are doing that specific task it won’t be a enjoyable knife. Each replaceable blade it’s sterile out of the package so you can process meat right away, so each animal you process you use a different blade. It’s not meant to be re-sharpen.
I work in a shipyard...this has been my edc blade for 4 years...super light And super sharp..all day everyday.. My spyderco and cold steel stay on my dresser...if you actually use it you will luv it...🗡🗡
My first EDC (a CRKT) was a gigantic chunk of 420J2 steel. I never had to repair the blade beyond perpetual sharpening. I used to keep a knife like this one in a hunting kit, but I rarely hunt anymore and it just rusted in the bag between uses. Take care, man. It sounds like the cough has finally gone away.
I've had no issues with blade breaking, great knife Outdoor edge customer service is not great Good thing their products are great. Hopefully you don't need to call them.
This knife is very good for dealing with deer and elk. Not a knife I use for everything else. But it shines in a hunting situation and that's what they really designed for
Before you cut trees with it, try skinning game with it. So many hunters with high end knives are so impressed with it's performance they show up with one in every hunting pack! Light, cheap ,says tight and negates the need for sharpening out in the field...blades are recyclable ✌+🖤
I keep a backup blade in my hunting pack. Havalon Piranta Bolt Folding Knife. I keep it just in case I drop my good knife. Benchmade Grip in 154CM The outdoor edge knife is likely to process 2 or more deer prior to dulling. (Fiend dressed). Thanks again for the video 😎👍
The point of the replacement blade is like this man we just need to get a new blade and keep doing what we doing. One or two blades in a plastic box in your back pack. It not not heavy and it's in a backpack dude. We bring in an extra blades when we're getting a deer and if I'm blade goes a doll I can grab a different one that's the point. We didn't buy this knife to carry it everyday and use it for all kinds of stuff and that's why we didn't want to pay a lot of money for it
You are right to bash this cheap knife (it is cheap) however i could say the same thing about some more expensive knives. Recently i purchased my first microtec combat troodon (i got it in the mail 2 days ago) and i can tell you it was a disappointment. 1st the blade was dull. 2nd the switch is meant to be used with gloves on. (ouch my thumbs) The size of the handle was good though but i expected better for an old brand with so much hype behind it. Thanks for the video
Better than a dull traditional knife. I gave the orange handle version to 2 of my hunting buddies. I sharpen the hunting knives they normally carry. The $30 dollar Mossy oak Walmart knives are generally what they carry. That type of knife needs to be sharpened often. I use a Benchmade Grip in 154CM, stays razor sharp with occasional stropping. Dropping the knife in the leaves is the only reason for cheap knives. Thanks for the video 😎👍
As someone who has been hunting basically my whole life I don't see the need. It maybe OK for people that aren't really into knives that dont sharpen. I still think there are better options. For years I used a buck 110 for hunting without any issue on bear, deer, coon, coyote, squirrels, rabbit and everything else . Now I use a microtech mini socom alpha fixed blade.
I just this knife yeaterday kinda oissed mine doesent have a thumb stud but as you said it's a 20 dollar knife,40 here in montreal. I saw the blade detach button and thought it was a button lock. It's still sharp af and will do the job I need it to
I have field dressed and processed many deer and i can say this would not make things any easier a quality fixed blade does the job much better probably wouldn't want to use any folder for that tbh clean up would be a pain
I’ve been thinking about this concept lately. You see scale options and hardware options but not many “blade” options. This is obviously a cheap version of that concept with more box cutter feels but imagine a Chaves 229 sold with both the tanto and the drop point for the buyer to swap at their pleasing. Maybe a stupid idea or not practical but seeing how people like tinkering with knives it would be cool. Don’t think it’s likely we will see that though cause it might affect full knife sales. Even offering different blade steels or shapes would be interesting.
I have handled am Onyx, and I agree with M.C. It is better to buy something like a Rat or Praxis. They feel substantially stronger and built better than the Onyx.
interesting, personally don't like replaceable blades, for sub 40 quid knives I would suggest byrd knives (Spyderco budget) great stuff m.c mixing it up keeping it fresh 👍🇬🇧
Nice for gutting deer but clogs up with fat and needs scrubbed with a brush after every use. Use it once on a deer and it’s never the same again. I gutted 7 deer before the blade needed replaced. Its razor sharp you have to be super careful using it.
I sharpened one of these for someone at work once. I thought it was really weird, and cheap feeling. I think buying the rat 1 or 2 would be better money spent.
Especially being a hunting knife, while also 20$, you won't feel bad about dropping it on a rock, or using it to cut some things you probably shouldn't, or handing it off for a friend to use. The amount of time it would take to balance out the cost to longevity of a higher end knife would take many years in my opinion. I think at the very least it's a perfect backup beater blade.
To me this is exemplified by tools that are going to degrade regardless of use. Something like a power tool, yes you should buy as high as you comfortably can. But a blade I think should be matched to the aggressiveness of use. Also the onyx has blade options for just box cutting if that's all you're using it for. If you're a backyard butcher and are going through blades on the daily, yeah fair enough go buy some 500$ steels. But the overwhelming majority of people will see this as a very convenient item
I mean if you like huge folders, it's definitely made well. It'll be a heavy chunk in the pocket and not practical in every situation, but the quality is there. I enjoyed mine 👍
@@metal_complex ok i just wanted to check because it seems with a knife that big it would like get a lot of blade play after while . if u know what I mean
I bought one last week. I don't really plan on carrying it (going to leave it in the RV) but I did carry it a few days at work. Deep pocket for me is a no go with the XL. My gripe for me would be it has fairly sharp edges in comparison to something similar sized like a cold steel AD10. The AD10 has very well rounded scales that aren't that hard on my pockets or pants legs. The XL seems like it would prematurely wear out the pants/pockets full pocket carry. That being said...if you use the pocket clip it totally disappears in my pocket! Rides higher but deep carries on the clip and I don't notice it being there. Totally changes the XL and in my opinion makes it very easy to edc. The knife is large, with emphasis on being extremely wide. It is not very thick, only 1/2" on the scales, and length is 5 1/2", but it does measure 2 1/8" wide closed. Surprisingly the blade is pretty thin so it has great slicing qualities and came extremely sharp out of the box. It is very good quality as far as fit and finish as well. It is solid with zero play and unless you abuse it I can not see that changing. Everything was tight and centered well. To me for its size the ergonomics are great. Fits my hand well, is comfortable, and the micarta has a good feel with nice grip. I saw a review on bladehq saying how terrible and uncomfortable it is and I can say for myself it is the complete opposite. I am 6'1 235 with very large hands though. A smaller person with smaller hands might want to consider the regular sheepdog. My wife at only 5 feet tall would be better suited with the mini. Hope that helps!
The knife I have is the RazorLite EDC and each blade has lasted me about a month each blade but if you want a self protection tool than its perfect for a cheap edc i love them
Putting the concept of a box cutter in the form factor of an EDC knife isn't bad. It's just badly executed here. How hard would it have been to offer higher quality choices? Having replacement blades available in even a modest steel like 12C27 could make a world of difference here. As far as comparisons, Sanrenmu uses 12C27 in $20ish EDC knives that are surprisingly well-made. The Tangram Santa-Fe is still on the low side of $20-something and offers G-10, decent action, and Acuto 440; which is effectively the Japanese equivalent of 9Cr18Mov.
Eafengrow has repeatedly been caught with false steel stamps. It might say "D2" but it might be "8Cr13Mov" or "5Cr15". Sure, that's better than the steel here but why not just be honest?
Guys I have hunted with swear by the hunting version of this so I bought one and was not impressed. I will stick with my Buck vanguard fixed blade, quartered a mule deer buck and two elk with that knife in last years hunting seasons and only pulled out the sharpener once. Bad ass knife! A guy I work with has this exact same outdoor edge not impressed with it either, my everyday carry is either the spyderco tenacious or Rat II in D2, much better knives than this one in my opinion
420J2 is SO bad. 0.15-0.36 carbon content. COME ON. That’s not worth spending money on. 8cr13MoV for 20 dollars is literally between 3-6 times BETTER 🤯.
I would never skin an animal with this blade, as I would be far too likely to hit that blade-release with my thumb, but I can see this replacing a box-cutter that uses cheap razor blades. But, this is a "no" from me, and I suspect most knife aficionados, because it's more a utility blade designed for workshops rather than EDCing.

Replaceable blades tell me 2 things: box cutter, and/or lazy. Just learn to resharpen and don’t waste so much stuff. Throw away culture is just whack. Besides that, it’s just ugly man. I would not be able to bring myself to carry this.
Those blades can be resharpened. I can get it sharper than original. I dont throw away the blade when i change it, it gets reaharpened and added back to the replacement lineup.
I hunt (deer, elk..doves… to squirrels and cotton tails) and fish (ocean and stream) for decades all over the world breaking down 000s of animals. I had a chance to use this one last season. It’s alright. I wouldn’t buy one. Learn how to sharpen your knives before being a sheep and wasting $$$ on expensive knives being advertised. You can make a $20 knife last for years and years.
