‘Foundation’ Stars Talk Apple TV+’s Hugely Ambitious Sci-Fi Epic: “This Is Going to Be Emotional”

  • What’s potentially more ambitious and spectacular than a new ‘Star Wars’ movie or series? How about taking on one of the seminal sci-fi texts that inspired George Lucas’ many journeys to a galaxy far, far away: Isaac Asimov’s ‘Foundation’ books. That is just what Apple TV+ has done with its newest series, ‘Foundation,’ a sci-fi drama of epic scope and deep-rooted emotion that charts a future in which warring factions and philosophies fight to lead the future of humanity. The idea for the adaptation came from ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Dark Knight Rises’ story scribe David S. Goyer, who fell in love with the books as a kid after being gifted them by his father, and key to his vision was bringing the books, which reflected a post-WWII world and worldview, up to date to reflect our current times. So it is that the… well, foundations of ‘Foundations,’ remain intact, but certain characters and arcs have been tweaked and fleshed out to make the story pop with currency and relevance. Ahead of the series’ debut on Apple TV+, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Nikki Novak spoke with Goyer about his approach to the adaptation as well as the stacked cast of audience favorites and sparky up-and-comers who helped bring it to life: Jared Harris (Dr. Hari Seldon), Lou Llobell (Gaal Dornick), Lee Pace (Brother Day… and some others), Leah Harvey (Salvor Hardin), and Alfred Enoch (Rach Seldon). During extended interviews, they talk about Goyer’s vision and its wild scope; how raw emotion, practical sets, and some very uncomfortable costumes keep their series grounded; and tease what might - and might not - be in the mysterious vault that lies at the center of the first season’s early episodes.

      @@odostolzfu7775 Cheers, I agree when you compare it to the Expanse the best hard scfi show ever made or Battle-star or other greats it has its rough edges. I would rest my argument on one example:
      Next Generations is one of the all time most beloved Scfi shows - Season 1 however was rough as hell and everyone admits it. IT was not the original, it had many weird dynamics and it was finding its feet. Yet we all know it is a legendary series by most metrics with some episodes becoming acting and writing masterpieces.
      Foundation is incredibly challenging to absorb for a non-reader. More to the point many readers have to read it twice or even three times to appreciate the scale, depth and majesty that is Foundation.
      What the show did was draw characters forwards and draw ideas forwards as well as juggle their legal rights and juggle the story arcs trying to show not tell as much as they can.
      What people don't realize is the difficulties they faced and overcome - As long as they can deep dive next season and really embrace the stories and epic time jumps we are going to see an incredible show.
      If they infuse their politics and ego into it I am sure it will fail like new trek Discovery.
      Your points make sense though there can appear some woodenness at times but overall I thought the acting was excellent and story walked the razors edge. I also get it if you have read the books and feel disappointed. That is the problem with being a book reader.
      I tried as much as possible to forget what I knew and see it for what they were achieving and I think they pulled it off under the first season pass. Now that the audience has knowledge of this universe they should dive all in. Absolutely all in on their amazing materials to draw from.
      I watched it however on my projector on a big wall in my unit with surround sound. Trust me how you view this matters - Foundation is a gorgeously shot and its special effects are just beautiful.
      Patric Stewart is a magnificent actor but in season 1 of Next Generations he had certain restraints. Foundation has talent of similar caliber and some very good younger talent - If I was writing on Season 2 I would be sooooo excited to make the story explode before us!!!!
      Kind Regards from Australia

    Goyer says the speed of the transport ship to Terminus is .5c. This is wrong. Terminus is at least 20,000 light years from Trantor since it is at the periphery of the galaxy while Trantor is near the core. At .5c relative to Trantor the journey would take at least 40,000 years Trantor time or 35,000 years ship time. The stated transit time in the show is 5 years. To achieve that on ship elapsed time the ship speed would need to be .99999999c.
    This, however, doesn’t allow the Seldon Plan to work. Seldon says that Trantor will fall within 300 years and that, if his plan works, there will follow a 1000 year dark age rather than the 30,000 year period without Seldon’s intervention.. The problem is that even at .999999999….c it would take at least 20,000 years Trantor time for the Seldon group to reach Terminus, at which point the Plan has no purpose. The only way for the timing to work is if the transport is capable of faster than light jumps.
    So, not only is Goyer’s .5c speed wrong, the idea that Seldon’s group can’t use a jump ship is completely misguided.

    • @mikecollins521
      @mikecollins521 3 года назад +1

      I caught this as well. The only 'out' I can think of is that a 'jump ship' is like the ones in Dune that instantaneously transport you to spots in the galaxy...the 'slow' ships still travel faster than light (like 'warp' drive in star trek maybe?) but are MUCH slower depending on where you are going vs. the jump drive. I have not read the books so if this goes against what a 'jump' ship has been defined as, then it's still a problem. Based on the effects showing the ship traveling, there is no 'hyperspace' effect that we've seen in every other space drama so I dunno about the faster than light...you do see stars moving against each other though, so maybe they are taking a more 'Expanse' route and not putting pretty flashing lights everywhere for effects when traveling at faster-than-light speeds....

      Oh you're just gonna take all the fun out of it, ehe? 😆. Actually... and astutely expressed. The only artistic license I can think of is 'warp factor' this and that, similar to get Trek, but even in that universe it was gonna take 'Voyager' 8-10 years to back to the Alpha Quadrant. I dunno, maybe Warp factor 8 is considered 'slow ship' in this universe which has 'jump drive' worm hole technology that is supposedly instantaneous.

    • @scottsoloway
      @scottsoloway 2 года назад +1

      @@martinpennington4429 In the books, hyperspace jumps are essentially instantaneous. Net time depends on how far the first jump point is from the start point and how close the final jump gets to the destination. Aside from that the travel time depends primarily on the time needed to determine the exact position after each jump and to calculate the parameters for the next jump.
      On the TV series jumps are quick but nowhere near instantaneous and , even though Goyer claims the slow ships travel at less than light speed, that can’t be so as the show states that the voyage from Trantor to Terminus is 50,000 LY. I’m not sure if Asimov ever specifies a distance but the general description of the planet’s positions means the absolute smallest distance would be more than 20,000 LY.

    Goyer had to implement the Cleon clone rotation plot device in order to keep Pace in the show, and significantly change the importance the “outgoing” empire has; it should fall apart around the end of the first book.
    But how will they let him go now when everyone likes his character so much? Have Danee- er, Demerzel somehow shepherd him away from Trantor and create a whole new branch of the story where Lee Pace’s clones continue to be relevant?
    I think he should have been given a part with more staying power. Not an emperor who is supposed to die off in a dozen pages, not even a clone dynasty. It’s a risk the show would survive long enough, but to have him play Golan Trevize for a few seasons at the END… That might have been incredible. Dude who plays Dusk could have been the randy old guy, Janov, and the actress who plays Demerzel could have played Bliss.
    Or he could have been an Olivaw/Giskard type of (not clone, but) sentient robot who watched the milennia pass by. Anything other than a charismatic emperor of a dying empire who will continue to keep the story from progressing as it should as long as he’s basically the most visible and popular actor on the show.
    The collapsing empire is not supposed to be more interesting than the settling of Terminus and the machinations that occur on the outer rim…and the “other side” of the galaxy. Also this bickering between Gaal and Hari is annoying and stupid. The casting for the Terminus plot is as bland as puréed GMO winter squash. 😞

    What I love about Foundation is that there is characterization on every side of every major conflict. Brother Day is tested on The Maiden and while walking the Great Spiral, which in turn leads to conflict between him and Brother Dusk. Both Hari(or whoever/whatever that was) and Gaal are tested by each other on their way to Helicon. Salvor was tested by the Anacreons and her adoptive father’s death. Heck, even Demerzel was tested when she visited The Maiden.
    In addition, I watched it a second time, and I noticed more small details that could suggest other possible plot lines for Season 2. Like Inception, I can almost always find something new whenever I rewatch this.

    I have enjoyed the Foundation very much. I have not read the books so I dont know how they are different from the show. Most new shows and movies I do not like because of all the woke man hating in them but this show has some very loving roles for the males and does not make them all out to be the evil that kills everything.

    If the BBC did Asimov as a series they would use wobbly cardboard sets in one studio and an alien planet would be a bit of waste ground or an old quarry a few miles from the studio. Would still probably run for years though. Aka Dr. Who.

    I am just loving Apple TV’s originals and they just killed it with the “Foundation” .I am really glad that they went to actual places and build actual sets to shoot the series instead of taking easy route of CGI .There hard work paid off ,the show looks Marvellous.It’s a visual treat .The world building is also soo good .It shows they put a lot of love and care in this show ❤️🤍.One thing I love about this show is it doesn’t treat it’s audience like a child by giving to many informations that they shouldn’t be giving which many shows this days .This show requires your full attention and it freaking deserve it .
    I believe it’s going to be the “Next Big Thing” 🤍💙

    Just viewed E4. My Dad just passed this week so this whole thing is really affecting me. That aside, I find this adaption one of the most incredible things I've ever seen and I'm so grateful for it. The last film that affected me at all like this was 'Cloud Atlas' or 'Titanic'. The writers (et all) hit this way out of the park when it comes to connecting with the pulse of our accelerated and changing world...

    Gaal's scene of triangulation etc was a pinnacle of 'show, don't tell'. I don't like maths, but if we have a bona fide maths genius, don't say that in the first episode and then never use it in the plot. Go Gaal, and her scriptwriters.

    The TV series disappointed me. Just not enough content from the actual books. I despaired when I heard Goyer was gonna make it, for I haven't liked anything he's ever written - except for his very own concept, DaVinci's Demons. But I've disliked all his considerable superhero work, which is saying something as I'm (otherwise) a huge superhero fan.

Incredibly disappointing considering what could’ve been possible with a little more effort.. shame, really. And just another Apple show for the bin.
