The '83 draft needs to be mentioned alongside '89 as the best drafts in recent memory. '83 has 8 HOF'ers (John Elway, Eric Dickerson, Jim Covert, Bruce Matthews, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Darrell Green, and Richard Dent) to the '89 draft's 5 (Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Deion Sanders, and Steve Atwater).
This might sound silly, but if the packers drafted Barry Sanders I think he would’ve been great with Majkowski in 89. (Yeah, the all-pro qb that Brett Favre later replaced). He was a great play-action passer and Sanders would’ve been the perfect compliment to that offense.
On Thomas' attempt for an eighth sack, Dave Kreig stepped to the left and threw a TD pass as time expired - Thomas later wished he had a second chance at that play.
Really good piece, but I can't understand why not mention Thomas died in the middle of his career. Personal aspects aside, this had direct impact on his overall career numbers. He could have been even greater. It's just weird ignoring it completely.
Or Aikman! Imagine if the Packers would have followed through with their tank and kept the No. 1 overall pick. UrinatingTree and other RUclips personalities would be ALL OVER IT.
The one thing your missing is Dallas hit on their 1st Round picks 3 years in a row, which is unmatched by any NFL team. In 88'-Michael Irvin, 89'-Troy Aikman, and 90'-Emmitt Smith. Now Dallas has lost their friggen mind and drafted defense and O-linemen with their first round picks almost every year except 2016 when they drafted Zeke.
Damn it Packers. They could have had Aikman, which would have potentially avoided the two decades of Favre/Rodgers I've had to watch. Being a Bears fan, it's not been fun. I miss the Majowski days.

2016 draft class is going to blow this class out of the water. I see 10-15 potential Hall of Famers. The top 5 picks will all be in the Hall of Fame too. Do a 2006 recap. You'll notice 6 first round players that eventually journeymanned their way to buffalo: mario Williams, Matt leinart, reggie Bush, Shawn merriman, and the two 1rd picks the bills had that year whitner and mccargo
What is an interesting hypothetical is, if Barry Sanders was forced to enter the supplemental draft in 1989, the Cowboys likely would have used it to select him--which means, they would lose the opportunity to get Emmitt Smith in 1990. It would have been interesting to see how things would have went for Dallas and whatever team drafted Smith. Another question is, if there could be a re-draft, how would the top four picks shake out? Dallas needed a franchise QB, so Aikman would still go number one and Atlanta would be shutout since the top four would be gone. But which player would the packers, lions and chiefs have selected in hindsight? I think the packers would have gone with Deion Sanders. they just drafted two backs in the top three rounds in 1987-1988, they had tim harris to rush the QB, and they had an aging corner in dave brown. the lions would still get Barry sanders and the chiefs would still get Thomas. so, basically I think the only change would be Deion.
Another comparison to this draft in more recent times would be the 2011 draft first 7 picks were pro bowlers with 2 of them being almost guaranteed with von and Julio being HOF and 2 likely with AJ and Peterson. Cam can still turn his career around and marcell will likely not but still an incredible amount of talent at the top.
Looking back on this complete draft, it's obvious why they eventually shortened the draft to 7 rounds. The only really notable player drafted after Round 7 was guard, Mark Schlereth out of Idaho, taken in the 10th Round. By the 12th and final round, teams were drafting janitors and night security guards who could work weekends.
John Elway, Dan Marino, Jim Kelley, Eric Dickerson, Kurt Warner, Darrel Green, Jim Covert, Bruce Matthews. Out of those only one did not make it into the hall of fame(Warner) and mainly because his career was cut short by injuries.
Yeah, that was a weird inclusion on that list. 7 NFL seasons is a pretty good career for a 7th round pick. He had 1200 yards rushing his 2nd year in the NFL and averaged 4+ ypc in San Diego so he was kind of a steal, but he never made a Pro Bowl and is never going to the Hall of Fame.
