Okay, maintenance like this isn't something I do....but I like watching ur videos anyway....but the one thing that caught my attention right away is when you say "our" about all your equipment! That one word speaks volumes!
There are two ways of doing this maintenance. The right way and the waist of time way. Congratulations, for choosing the right way. You bought great products and they will work great for years.😀🇨🇦
That look on your face wondering where the hell did the filter go was priceless. I would reckon there's not to much dust in snow for the need of a filter
I love watching your channel. I can actually picture myself living there watching through you all. I have always watched shows about Alaska because I love life in homesteading. Thank you for sharing.
I tell people all the time, "don't waste your money buying things twice, buy something you worked hard for once, and take care of it." 😊👍. Much love from WA state ☀️🌲
Great job! Keep it working smoooooothly... One point... ALWAYS wear safety glasses & gloves when checking those batteries! & Immediately wash hands after, even with the gloves! I worked on a truck battery once with my gloves, everything looked clean. Got done, washed my hands - went to grab the gloves after lunch (abt 45 min) & 8 of the glove fingers had holes in them!!!
Love it when my girls get curious, roosters too, and try to lend a helping hand or just think hmm is there something to eat here? I so enjoy watching free range birds. Doing my dishes, watching them out the window go on and about their way naturally is so beautiful. Their interactions with each other. Not holed up in a tiny box and never seeing outside. Makes me cringe....And the engine maintenance was lovely to watch as well :-) :-)
I have never seen a snowblower with an air cleaner 🤔. If you are blowing snow, there is no dust. You two take care and keep the videos coming. Greetings from Northern Montana.
I enjoyed it very much. I like the way you talked about everything was "ours" not mine. Keep up the good maintenance on everything and it'll last a long time.
The dogs in the background trying to stay off the ice and snow was priceless. You are right it cost more then just the price of equipment. Time and Maintenance is an on going expense.
Another great video! A couple of things for you to consider: 1. When checking your batteries, put the part of the cap UP. Putting it down causes it to pick up crud (especially on vehicles) and the crud will end up inside of the battery. Not good. 2. Most small engines used on winter type equipment do not have air cleaners as the air is so clean and the filter will fil up with condensation from the temperature difference of operation and outside air. 3. If the oil drain on a small engine is in a difficult spot, I use some small pipe nipples/elbows to have the opening in a more accessible place. American engines use 1/8" pipe. Not too sure about foreign engines. Probably metric. If the equipment is small/light enough, you can tip it on it's side and let the old oil run out of the fill opening. Just be sure the carb is up or it will fill with oil and you will have all kinds of problems. Now start considering. Thanx for the great video and channel. The Old Norwegian >
I am so excited about finding your channel yesterday. I have been binge watching since I live in Va and we are on lockdown. You are living my dream. Always wanted to move to Alaska and live off grid. Too old now so I will just follow you guys. You are such a lovely couple and I have just really really enjoyed watching your videos. Thank you for living my dream and I look forward to seeing more. Don’t need to say stay safe because you guys look like you have that all under control. I’m a happy person finding you guys. Love the journey because I started from the very beginning and you guys are making your way for a wonderful life. Question any children in the future for you guys?
I have a couple of trailers with wooden beds. The larger of the two is a 16 foot snowmobile trailer that I purchased in 1994. I change the oil in all of my machinery like you have Eric. Later on a warm day I use a paint roller and apply it to my trailer beds. The boards on the beds look almost brand new. Not a bit of rot. Reduce reuse recycle they say....
Most snow blowers do not have air filters as they are not in dusty conditions. Also on the tracks, make sure they are inside away from any sunlight as the sunlight destroys the tracks, and they are very expensive. I own a small engine shop. Thanks for great video's.
Heet is isopropyl alcohol, which will mix with any water in your generator gas tank. It is not a fuel stabilizer. So...if you are putting your generators away for the summer, it would be good to add a fuel stabilizer. Or, run them until they run out of gas, and there won't be any varnish build up which can cause carb problems.
WIX oil filters for cars...please! Also, if you haven’t heard of the RUclips channel “Project Farm”, he is a great source of information for finding pretty much the best of everything.
Also shut the gas valve off if it has one and run the carburetor dry or drain the tank and run it dry. If you leave gas in the tank, put a piece of plastic bag like a zip lock bag under the gas cap and screw the cap on tight. This will keep water from forming in the tank. The tank vent lets air in and out and temps change and water will form in the tank if you don't seal it off.
All small engines always check the spark plug with the oil and if you had a compressor and a hose you can hook it up to the generator and blow those air filters out and use them again😁😇🐝
Thank you for sharing this activity! I know you might be thinking, "What is so great about boring chores?" But, honestly it's a help to someone like me because it is a reminder to get the ball rolling on our maintenance activities. So, thank you! Hope y'all will melt soon.
When changing your oil filter on the Polaris you said (around 9:10) pretty much so screw the filter on as tight as you can hand tight. No, no wonder you have issues getting them off. Spin it on till it fully contacts and then only give it a snug turn say a 1/4 to 1/2 turn to compress the O-ring. They don't need as tight as you're making them and that is likely why you're having such problem getting the off. Also a little oil on the threads can help threading the new filter back on and I was taught and have always poured some oil into the filter say about half full so that when when you start the engine that first time it's not totally dry and sort of helps prime the system. Maybe it doesn't, but I've done it for almost 35 years and for all the little more it takes, it can't hurt. I loved the look on your face when there wasn't an air filter on your blower.
Ha I’ve stabbed may oil filter with a screwdriver😆 You guys are absolutely right, take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. I see you guys still have a lot of snow. Hopefully it won’t be much longer until you can see some grass poking through.
Machines are for my husband. I am wondering how your seedlings are doing. I have never been this excited about someone else's garden before. Stay well and thanks for sharing!
It doesn't hurt for women to learn how to care of machinery. You might not have a hubby there to do it. Dad always made sure sis & I knew how to do it.
Good idea to do all of the maintenance before everything turns to mud. Good tip on the paracord for a filter wrench. I can't find my filter wrench either. Haha!
Good to see you take good care of the things that take care of you. Proper maintenance is overlooked so much these days. A little tip, if you can find it only, use gas with no ethanol in it. I understand the government has mandated most gas in America have 10% but you can still find some places that have 100% pure gas and it will save your small engine carburetor. The amount of times I've had to rebuild or replace carbs on small engines because of ethanol in gas is ridiculous. Don't worry so much about new cars, but older boats and small engines equipment should really only be run on pure gas. It worth the hassle to find it local then to have a perfectly good generator die years before its time.
My snow blower doesn’t have air filter either or a place for one. Don’t need them in winter. No dust. Good video though! Maintenance is so important if you want your equipment to last. Thanks
Just a heads up, you should really wear glove and some kind of eye protection when your checking your batteries. I do electrical testing for a living and I have gotten that on my skin and it burns like hell. Love yalls channel! Stay safe and and stay warm!
I just found your channel tonight. I watched the one where you harvested potatoes. We are living in California now and are from a snowy and cold region of the US and have always wanted to grow potatoes. Both white and sweet. We love tomatoes and I love carrots! ... Now I have to say California is known for crops of Vegetables and fruit. I find everything harder to grow here. We did grow cucumbers one year and I was able to can them. Do you thin your carrots? ... I hate doing that. Will they do okay just letting some takeover? .... I think I am going to enjoy watching people that know what they are doing.
Don't forget to grease your snowmachines suspension. Also, I'd recommend red Heat instead of the yellow. At some point it wouldn't hurt to change the chain case oil on the snowmachines as well.
Just to help you out a little. Oil filters should only be tightened 1/4 to 1/2 turn after the gasket touches the filter plate. Not tightened till they they stop turning.
Thanks for Sharing, maintenance is sooo important I like your routine and follow thru. Well done you two ! Think warm , and then warmer now , lol. Take care Stay well.
Great job ! especially the supervisors Bo and Bandit they should get a raise in treats! Oh and Erik probably should have 2nds on dessert :) Great Camera work too !
Well taken vehicles will last a good long time, at least you can do most of it. Loved the look on your face when you didn't see the airfilter. I bet you paid for it.
Random question...but this spring can you make a video about the different teas you make? I Think I remember you mentioning marigold tea for sleep and I would like to see a video on how to make it. Thanks!!
Synthetic is great in really cold weather. Your spot qualifies as really cold weather. Synthetic is a slicker oil and it flows easier in cold weather than a comparable weight non-synthetic. Since cold starts are when a lot of wear happens, using synthetic helps extend engine life. If you can find gas without ethanol use that in all small engines, anything except the Tundra. You can use it in the Tundra but since it is more expensive you may not want to. Ethanol is bad for the rubber components and other parts of the engine. Keep all fuel tanks full. Moisture condenses out the air in tanks that are not full. Ethanol has a lower MPG rating than playing gas so using ethanol free gas gives you slightly better MPG. Most small engines require 89 octane gas while typical 'regular' gas is 87 octane.
Yep, that'll keep you busy .... right now I don't own a single thing with an engine, so I'm twiddling my thumbs and watching other people do stuff ~8^) Rumor has it that you're still looking for a snowblower air filter. To be honest, I've never owned or even ran a snowblower .... so what do I know lolzzzz! Take care you two.
I have an idea, batteries are not efficient when cold, you might run a 1-2” plumbing pipe loop from the cabin into the battery box outside, then add a small silent low voltage, low RPM fan to circulate air, minimal effort, minimal voltage needed, better batteries! Obviously only needed in winter, duh.
When I was The parts manager at a Canadian Tire back in the eighties. A young apprentice mechanic did an oil change on a car. Did everything perfectly. Except forgot to add new oil. Car ran for less than 5 minutes before engine ceased. Costly bill.
Hello guys. Our family likes to watch your videos. You are great at coping with difficulties. You can do a lot of things and it's great. May I ask you a question? How do you earn a living? Since, in addition to the food that you produce, you also need money for gasoline.., construction materials.., additional food from store.., all this needs money. My dad said the same thing. He did it himself until his health forced him to take them to shops.
Great job! Keep it working smoooooothly...

Crazy that this popped up on my recommended videos, then I was like whoa I know that guy! Lol ... good to see you living the life Eric
Brodie Engel hey buddy! Enjoy the show! 😀
Awesome tip about the cord and screwdriver to get the oil filter off! I also find gripping it with a piece of sandpaper works well :)
I have never seen a snowblower with an air cleaner 🤔. If you are blowing snow, there is no dust. You two take care and keep the videos coming. Greetings from Northern Montana.

quick tip use the old filter to seal the new one
You can paint the used oil on your WOOD structures to prevent rot.
You can also put it in a sprayer to spray the chassis from also rotting
I was wondering how you would dispose of the used oil.
You can also put it in a bucket of sand & after you wash garden/yard shovels & such, vdip them in it. This prevents rust on your tools
If you rigged a 5 gal bucket just right with needle valve you could drip it on a fire and get the energy out of it
"Get outta here, chicken!" That was so funny, photo bomb!!!
Another great video!

Hola. Yo también vivo en el campo y ese tipo de mantenimiento es esencial para la durabilidad de la maquinaria, buen trabajo. Un saludo.
Just a friendly heads up but equalize mode is about removing sulphate buildup off the battery plates inside. Great vid. Thanks
Maintenance is so vital. Love the tip using the paracord to get the filter off. Great video!

The snow blower filter missing was hilarious Eric's face 😂😂
All small engines always check the spark plug with the oil and if you had a compressor and a hose you can hook it up to the generator and blow those air filters out and use them again😁😇🐝
Please stop giving bad advise, never! blow out A/F with compressed air

Prime your new oil filters with fresh oil before you install them. Saves significant engine wear.
Good idea to do all of the maintenance before everything turns to mud. Good tip on the paracord for a filter wrench. I can't find my filter wrench either. Haha!
I lived for five years up on the Canadian Border and most snowblowers never had air filters
I heard all the crickets outside my window when he took off the cap to the snowblower filter. 😂

Ahh the old 1UZ. That baby will run forever if you do simple maintanance 👍
Wow...you gotta be a jack of all trades out there!
Just to help you out a little. Oil filters should only be tightened 1/4 to 1/2 turn after the gasket touches the filter plate. Not tightened till they they stop turning.
Snowblowers and snowmobiles don't have air filters because it's not a dirty enviroment. Same with most boats.
At 250K you might want to check your cabin air filter!
Thanks for Sharing, maintenance is sooo important I like your routine and follow thru.
Well done you two !
Think warm , and then warmer now , lol.

Excellent maintenance video Guys.
FYI no air filter, it seems snow is a great dust catcher.
Random question...but this spring can you make a video about the different teas you make? I Think I remember you mentioning marigold tea for sleep and I would like to see a video on how to make it. Thanks!!
That would be a great video. I would like that two
No air filter in Honda engines! Air is ‘clean’ with no pollen, dirt, etc. in winter. The look of surprise was good though…..
Eric, that chicken was stealing your thunder. LOL
The chicken wanted to help out!!
Check out PRI-G as a better fuel stabilizer. I use it. Available on Amazon, at least in the lower 48.
Great tips on oil filter!
That would’ve been the first snowblower I’ve seen with a air filter. Snowblower don’t have air filters 🤭🤨
Glen Waldner thank you we did realize that when I went to order one 😂
I had an old Arin's and it had a reusable foam filter on it. It didn't do much more than prevent large stuff from being sucked in though.
Bro hope you are safe up there. New landscaper youtuber from Ireland here.

Thank you for the informative content.
good job thanks for sharing
Eric was speechless when he found out that the snow blower has no air filter 😂
I live in grid in Alaska and dont even have a snowblower 😂. I drive on the driveway till it packs down.
‘Get outta here chicken!’ Lol 😂 loved the animal comedy relief 😉
My friend used the oil from the engine to lubricate the chainsaw 🤔
save you money for a while but wears the bar and chain-thats money
Good job kids........really enjoyed this video.....a learning video for those who
have tools like yours.......any chance for more ice fishing ?
We hope to get out another time or two 😀
Yep, that'll keep you busy .... right now I don't own a single thing with an engine, so I'm twiddling my thumbs and watching other people do stuff ~8^) Rumor has it that you're still looking for a snowblower air filter. When change. Oil filter add filter full of oil
Maintenance is very Important when you live so far from garages and you have to do your own
Stay Safe
Margaret Lynch SOUTHERN IRELAND 🇮🇪 🙌 👌 😳

Maintenance=Long Life
The only reason I buy Fram filters is because of the non-skid on them.😎
I have an idea, batteries are not efficient when cold, you might run a 1-2” plumbing pipe loop from the cabin into the battery box outside, then add a small silent low voltage, low RPM fan to circulate air, minimal effort, minimal voltage needed, better batteries! Obviously only needed in winter, duh.
Hey Erik do you have to plug your vehicles in down in Willow? I remember plugging my vehicle in up in Fairbanks when I lived there.
Terri Holland we do not, we probably should but ours does not have a plug and all of our neighbors do not plug in their vehicles.
The mystery of the missing air filter lol
When I was The parts manager at a Canadian Tire back in the eighties. A young apprentice mechanic did an oil change on a car. Did everything perfectly. Except forgot to add new oil. Car ran for less than 5 minutes before engine ceased. Costly bill.
Maintenance costs money, but it's not as expensive as not maintenance :-)
Snow blower s don't have air filter they would plug up with snow.
Hello guys. Our family likes to watch your videos. You are great at coping with difficulties. You can do a lot of things and it's great. May I ask you a question? How do you earn a living? Since, in addition to the food that you produce, you also need money for gasoline.., construction materials.., additional food from store.., all this needs money. From the beginning, we thought you were earning a living by hunting and selling meat, but then we saw that you were keeping this meat for yourself. Sorry for this question, but this is just for understanding.
What do you do with the old oil? I have seen it used to help start brush burns but here in the UK a lot of garages use it for oil fired heating systems to warm up their workshops.
Yall are so responsible for your age. 😃
Photo bombed by a chicken!😜🤣
Also. I hated working on ice it sucked
I haven’t seen Hunter in a few videos
Do you check/change Spark Plugs on your Snowmobiles and any of the other equipment you have that have them?
I used to do that but we don't have plugs go bad often and our Polaris ranger and both snow machines have extra plugs on them.
Snowblowers do not have air filters
Todd Lyle your right
charging batteries emits hydrogen gas. box should have vent.
Has a vent pipe on top and an inlet on the bottom
