Gaming journalists recently reported that the game industry posted a recording breaking amounts of revenue and profit never before aeen since 1998. Yet they also reported major companiea are saying their games sold way below expectations and so decided to lay off people. En masse. They should have learned whT steve jobs did when he first left apple: don't let the bean counters run the company, they only know that the company should make money, but they don't know what tools to use to make money.
For some reason "lots of people like it and want to buy it" isn't a valid reason to make something anymore unless you're the actual maker of the thing.
I said it over 3 years ago. Microsoft don't give a fuck about fighting games and they acquired KI just to try and get sales when the XB1 dropped. They knew people were anxious and desperate for a new KI games and that was their hook to try and get people to get their system. What happened? A lot of people didn't even care because of all the shady shit they dropped with the launch of the console. One of the best games ever made flopping do to poor management of Microsoft. They should've sold KI to a fighting game company like Bandai or ArcSys. Seeing it die this way sucks.
You can blame Quantitative Easing for that. It's when Obama and the Central bank started giving free money to the ultra rich. It funneled down to the tech industry. Microsoft was probably incredibly flush with cash at the time and wanted a fighting game of it's own to compete with Sony. The spigot got closed around COVID. They finally raised interest rates. This is why every new fighting game monetizes everything. Get ready for worse.
considering this is the same Microsoft that went "Hi-Fi Rush surpassed expectations with flying colors, clearly we need to close the studio that made it" yeah, I'm not shocked nor sadden that they abandon KI, & honestly the IP should just go Public domain
Considering: the precedent of guest characters in KI, the breadth of IPs Microsoft now owns, and the aparrent success of MultiVersus, theres a possibility that Iron Galaxy has been tapped to make something akin to an XBox All Stars rather than KI. ... but that's still assuming that the apportunity to make Anniversary Edition is a lead in to another project. Its a great time to play the current KI in any case. It's ironic that Iron Galaxy made Darkstalkers Resurrection, as that franchise also celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. It would also be a great time to update Capcom Fighting Collection with a Chaos Tower mode or some of the other DS/VSav content trapped on old releases. No sign of something like that happening either, though.

But if a new game came out i'd be more willing to pay a full price to "buy" into the game early with a bunch of other casuals who are starting with this game. i Think thats the major problem with Fighting games and attacting an audience, it has to be in MASSIVE waves which will be retained so the noobs can climb together

Kind of expected at how they killed literally the money maker game studios and go "how we repeat that success". If MS buys a company, look to see that IP dying.
It isn't even just KI. It's Microsoft Gaming as a whole. I'd would not be surprised if there's no successor console. The business' bottom line is so high that seemingly everything fails and nothing makes money.
I wouldn’t be surprised either. If we’re lucky maybe we get 1 more generation of Xbox consoles but idk. They seem to wanna move away from hardware entirely and maybe just publish games
Same could be said for Square Enix. All their games failed expectations. Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, all the Tomb Raiders, etc. Even FF7 Rebirth is said to be a disappointment. Game development is expensive.
Not finding a developer who would work on it is a legitimately understandable reason. If you have a solid IP that has a strong name, and hand it to a C list team, you could effectively ruin a potential future project. When people think of a game series they think of the publisher and IP. This means the notoriety of name is very very important. A single terrible game can have a big impact. Fighting games are niche as it is. There are only a handful of dev teams that regularly make them, and most of those teams have multiple fighting games they're working on as it is. Those within the community know these teams by heart. If the core audiance sees a no-name team making their series, you could lose that important niche audiance as well as ruin the name that could help it recover. Not only do you lose money but you actively kill the value of the IP in the process.
Microsoft is done with IPs that don't start/end with Call and/or Duty Im afraid. Phil put the company in a 70 billion dollar hole that has forced the greater corporate side of microsoft to take notice. No more fun, literally.

Just because you know how to code a Halo game doesn’t mean you’d be good at coding (let alone designing) a fighting game, especially one as peculiar as Killer Instinct. That’s not how the real world works, my guy.
@@zelohendricks51 Which people? Before you say Iron Galaxy let me remind you that IG just watched MS dissolve game studios (most notably the one for Hi-Fi Rush) and have a history of working with/for MS for making S2 and S3 of KI for very little money. I'm not saying they would never do it, but the contract for making a new KI would be a steep asking price for MS. IG is incredibly good at what they set their minds to. However, MS are going to be looking to the past for how much they paid Double Helix and IG to make KI back in 2013-2017 and look at IG's asking price and conditions, and have reservations. And if they choose anyone but IG to do KI4, that company better be people who love the game enough to not have to know how fighting games work, but are willing to learn, or must be able to make fighting games already and be willing to take on the weird systems that KI has as its core values. If neither of those are true, the game is doomed, and possibly the studio that MS picks with it.
I wrote this on the recent advertisement for KI Anniversary Edition, and I'll copy and paste it here: Hey, Microsoft. If you wanna show some brand confidence in Xbox again, let these developers make you a new Killer Instinct, give them a good budget, advertise it properly, and give it a good amount of content. That'd help win people back. By the way, thank you to Iron Galaxy and Double Helix for making KI (2013) one of the greatest fighting games of all time.
Win who back? The low percentage of people who support and want the games they got cancelled? Cause sorry, low proft potential is why studios are being cut/shut down. Business is business, and in this era of failed games, it is what it is.
It’s really a shame because they have so many great IP’s they could utilize but they just don’t. And the ones they do utilize always have problems like crazy and get pushed back a bunch only to come out and not be that great. It’s like we’ll get a cinematic trailer for something then not hear about it for a couple years it’s so wierd. Development is being mismanaged like crazy and it seems widespread across almost all their studios not just a couple of them
They are taking AWAY the games. Subscriptions, you'll own nothing..... is their goal. Get this..... they even SAID that they didn't want CoD. They want the CoD Mobile INFRASTRUCTURE. Xbots = bots. We KNOW M$ uses them and has for over a DECADE.
It’s okay to let franchises die gracefully. Darkstalkers had an excellent trilogy, Bloody Roar had 4 great games, and killer instinct got one of the most unique mainstream fighting games released in the past decade. I want to see new series be born from the ashes of their predecessors
In some fashion I agree. Letting things end while they're still good is better than them being resurrected as something lesser. Though on the same token, it could turn out great, it all just depends. MLP: FiM for example died well, rather than being milked to death like most Family IPs. Megas XLR is another, a fantastic show that had a short but beyond sweet run.
The problem is that Darkstalkers _didn't_ "die gracefully": it had three games back in the mid to late 90s, and Capcom has been re-releasing that same games (in varying quality) for nearly 30 years. You could also make the argument that Bloody Roar didn't either (as BR4 was fairly divisive).
Max, the problem was the timing of the KI 10 year anniversary edition. They tried to see if players would still play KI while at the same time new Street Fighter, new Mortal Kombat and new Tekken released... Now, don't get me wrong, I really like KI and want to support it, but dude, Tekken 8 is so F good it's impossible to play any other fighting game right now.
I know some people are gonna get super mad about this but I feel that KI should be one of the games that bridges the gap to PlayStation, I say that as a fan of fighting games and Killer Instinct especially, the boost in players could certainly be beneficial to the game and given that there's the current resurgence in fighting games, what have they got to lose? I'd take the health of the game, an increased playerbase and the hopes of a sequel over exclusivity.
I’m just going to download it on PC. I love fighting games and I love watching KI. If there’s anything we can do as a community then we gotta stand up with them
With the industry being in a state of spending too much money on a game's budget to the point of it needing to make an egregious amount back to be considered a success, Killer Instinct feels like it could be the right approach for Microsoft. A project with a scale and budget that's more AA and can play the long game finanically without needing to make a return instantly. It's also something they could put it while they're busy working on bigger projects that will take more time to come out. Xbox needs more games in the market, they just don't need to be so big on scale.
Microsoft isn’t a very well known “fighting game” platform. It’s mostly known for first person shooters & multiplayer online gaming. It doesn’t surprise me how Killer Instinct isn’t be supported or promoted on the Xbox series consoles.

They will put 0 energy into keeping these franchises alive. It’s all just going to die. Toys for Bob escaping Sony was a miracle, and this is Microsoft. Empty suits.

Matt Booty, Sarah Bond and Phil Spencer together with Microsoft corporate and financing absolutely murdered Xbox. The brand is dead, the games rarely come out, and they are all about selling us slop right now.
I'm on the pessimist side on this one, even if we were to raise more awareness, hold more events, the way it's going at Microsoft especially after the closing of Arkane and Tango (and I'd say Ninja Theory might be next), tells me that if it isn't a cash cow like CoD, Elder Scrolls or most Blizzard IPs, they're not going to prioritize making new games. Pretty sure with the current closures they had, they're going to prioritize the big IPs that'll pay back their investment. Even if they were to port KI to other platforms, with crossplay, I don't think it would be enough to turn MS's head over the idea of greenlighting another game. Basically most scenarios aren't optimistic due to how big and expensive it is to develop games of this caliber.
NT will definitely be next. They will either be disbanded or sold to someone. They've made 2 games already and both failed. By the way, the head of NT, who was at the founding of the company, left the studio a long time ago. But that happened after NT was bought by MS.

Another sad point is this weird fact that, outside of Mortal Kombat, there has never been a fighting game series that remained relevant and mainstream for a long period that wasn't Japanese. Killer Instinct was close were it not for that 17ish year time gap, and no others really come close. Would have been nice to see KI do the same but, alas, it wasn't to be.

I’m not a Power Rangers fan, but I’ve seen a lot of complaints online over the hears that Disney’s aquisition was the downfall of the franchise. And with the Muppets the only thing they did for years was a single direct to TV movie, all the way until the 2011 theatrical movie.
Even now, Muppets is one of those franchises they just don’t seem to know what they want to do with it other than sell merch, so they just sit on it for years without making anything new. I assume they still prototype, pitch and test things internally, but from the outside it looks like they just ignore it for long stretches of time, and when they do make things with it it feels like they miss the point of the franchise. That said, thry did have a new show last year, and I haven’t seen it, so maybe they’ve gotten better in recent years.
@@goranisacson2502 Disney bought Fox Kids, or I think it was Saban Brands, in the early 2000s in order to diversity their content, particularly boy-centric shows and cartoons, that meant Disney owned Power Rangers for quite a while and it was very successful for them, but at the same time they were embarrassed by it, for some reason and they wanted to interfere directly with the Super Sentai creators in order to make the shows more child-friendly than they already were. In the end Disney sold Power Rangers back to Haim Saban, since after acquiring Marvel and Star Wars they got two much bigger male-oriented brands

Everyone: We want a KI sequel!
Microsoft: A what? Hell is KI?
Gaming journalists recently reported that the game industry posted a recording breaking amounts of revenue and profit never before aeen since 1998.
Yet they also reported major companiea are saying their games sold way below expectations and so decided to lay off people. En masse.
They should have learned whT steve jobs did when he first left apple: don't let the bean counters run the company, they only know that the company should make money, but they don't know what tools to use to make money.
The gaming industry is a very broad concept. Mobile games are also included in this term. And mobile games will make more and more money every year.
For some reason "lots of people like it and want to buy it" isn't a valid reason to make something anymore unless you're the actual maker of the thing.
And not raking in CoD tier profit.
Get ready for worse.
considering this is the same Microsoft that went "Hi-Fi Rush surpassed expectations with flying colors, clearly we need to close the studio that made it"
yeah, I'm not shocked nor sadden that they abandon KI, & honestly the IP should just go Public domain
We’re lucky we even got a he anniversary update. I think KI is done under MS.
If its done under MS then it's just done forever. They're not going to sell Rare.
Considering:
the precedent of guest characters in KI,
the breadth of IPs Microsoft now owns, and
the aparrent success of MultiVersus,
theres a possibility that Iron Galaxy has been tapped to make something akin to an XBox All Stars rather than KI.
... but that's still assuming that the apportunity to make Anniversary Edition is a lead in to another project.

Oh shit Killer instinct got screwed over like dark stalkers, when Capcom tried to test the waters with Dark Stalkers Resurrection.

@@bigloc3442Crazy how we got battle rap fans here on a video game channel. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Honestly....There may be a chance Iron Galaxy can actually get the rights. They're owned by Amazon, and can probably have Amazon be the publisher.
If you made a new video on the history of the series, we will re-share it endlessly!!!
The dream is seeing the KI 1 and 2 vibes in 4K, and bring in all the goodness from KI 2013.
I was there in the arcade back in the day, and spent more years on emulator before KI 2013 came out. I am so excited for KI 4 one day.
KI's biggest flaw was being a Microsoft exclusive. I don't even dislike Microsoft, but they should have made it multi-platform.
KI need come back to the mayor leagues, need to shine in evo again and PS5 version X/S crossplay is the way to save KI
I love killer instinct since 1999 and even though i don't play it that much anymore and never played the 2013 game i still love the series it's sucks that its always getting Left in the dust by tekken street fighter and mortal Kombat
As a kid always wanted to see killer instinct vs mortal Kombat two American fighting games in a crossover game
I got myself an Xbox series X and the first thing i did was Download KI. That was the first game i wanted to play. That and Palworld. But i had been sitting around watching KI gameplay for years. KI was one of my favorite games on the SNES as a kid. Its what really got me into a fighting game. Sure SF2 helped alot too. But KI was what really made me go, Woah. These are really fun. And then came MK Trilogy which was the First MK game i ever got my hands on and had fun with that. But KI was the one game i truly loved in the Fighting scene. And that opened my eyes to games like Darkstalkers, then Blazblue. All cause KI was super influential on me. And yes i also do play smash, but that game came along more as me being a Nintendo fan and always had imaginary battles on who would win, Samus or Fox and all that. But seriously Long Live KI
Did the same but with Gamepass on mobile and it was an absolutely terrible experience.
Even worse when Apple took away HDMI out through lightning. Talk about phukking the end user over.
People have spoken up more about the desire for a Killer Instinct sequel than they have for anything else in the fighting game world. And Microsoft just disrespectfully craps all over it. They’re total idiots
The expectation is that the publishers are planning for the next generation... but they're not. They're just trying to milk the current generation.
Microsoft: we want people to give us money, buuuuuut we dont want to make anything.....
Oh do make games, they just don't care about franchises.
@@orangeslash1667 no they care about franchises. Only triple A ones. If you make an Indie Darling youre gonna be sold so the investors can get a nice bonus. (RIP TANGO)
@@JOfJaZ The only reason KI was green lite is because Microsoft needed a launch tile for the Xbox one and Ken Lobb suggested KI because he worked with KI before.
It says here that the most resent thing Iron Galaxy has done was porting Apex Legends to the Switch.
The goods news is that Rare confirmed that Fatal Fury was the biggest inspiration for KI and Fatal Fury just got a new game.
killer instinct was the entire reason why i even owned a xbox one lol
Microsoft is their own worst enemy when trying to foster a work environment where creativity flows. They used to let people create passion projects and that's how we even got KI to begin with. MS/Xbox didn't secure Iron Galaxy soon enough to make a second one, so now we're in the waiting game. I HOPE Iron Galaxy is making a second one. Jez Cordon has been talking about KI a lot in the last six months on his podcast and mentioned it just last week on Twitter. I think he's trying to find the pulse of the fans to see if Xbox made an announcement if fans would be behind it. Of course we would. What MS doesn't realize, that some in Xbox did, is with time and work, KI can make them a lot of money. I hope we get an announcement next weekend. It's very high on my list of most anticipated games. /copium
Nobody should actually pay Jez any attention because that dude is basically the living representation of those meme graphs showing "It's Over, ITS SO OVER, WE'RE BACK, it's over... WE'RE SO BACK," on top of also basically lying over social media about what he does and doesn't know about shit behind the scenes.
I hope not man,I love KI so much.
