  • This video covers the history of one of the most infamously bad cards in Clash Royale. The Wizard. This card has consistently had a win rate below 30% for years, when a healthy win rate is around 45-55%. Wizard currently has the lowest win rate in the game. When looking at this card purely from a statistical basis, it's the number one card in need of a buff, but there's more to the Wizard's story which keeps him in his place...

    I think one of the main reasons Wizard is used so much is because of the fact that better options like executioner or firecracker are too high up on ladder.

      @@harristsang2 that's also true but that's also due to early game counters. For example, some new players may not be comfortable with using inferno tower so Goblins, Minions, Minion Horde and Skeleton army are all viable tank killers. So, using Wizard is an easy to use solution to all of these as valkyrie is weak to air troops and wizard can cover both air and splash.

    Small rework idea: instead of locking to a target the wizard would always shoot at the nearest target, thus making him more unique and survivable

      Lolol I hit 7k trophies about 2 yrs ago and call it a day for that infernile mode called ladder. Can't imagine having to max out even more cards to keep up with the RPS
      GTs and CCs are better use of your time in terms of rewards and good vibes. No overleveled shit since everything is boosted or capped at L11.

    I like the idea of the wizard charging up an extra fireball when idle, that takes maybe 4 seconds to charge up, this way when not killed with a spell or left alone for too long, he’ll do 2x the damage in rapid succession, I believe this leaves room for a lot more strategical gameplays and thus redeem his 5 elixir cost.

      I think this is a great idea, it’s just like the prince and dark prince (difference being that wizard is a range troop), and once it uses its charge attack that he’ll use his regular fireballs. And since the wizard has many counters this won’t break the game and will make wizard balanced.

    I think a good balance change for wizard would be to give him some sort of spell resistance, that way his low health is easy to deal with by placing a troop right on top of him. I think it also fits thematically since his knowledge of the arcane might help him counter spells in the arena.

    I think the solution is to make it more of an offensive card. The witch and executioner are almost exclusively defensive cards, so is ice wiz. Making it a card which could be used to defend pushes with lots of support and then counter attack would actually give it a niche. Maybe give it a little bit of knockback on its attacks or something so it could mess up the opponent's defense.

      Tbh, i would say that would just be a Fard.sfx for Mid-ladder.
      My personal rework is making its Health notably higher (around +25%), but decrease its First Hit from 0.4s to 0.9s.
      The first hit speed is something no one talks about being a problem.

    The overabundance of the 4 elixir cards is I think a problem in the game but probably now impossible to fix :/ we can only hope that in the future we get more non-4 elixir cards :)

      @@BullyGarfield. it wouldn’t work at all unless you completely rework wizard. Making wizard in its current state 4 elixir would make it by far one of the most broken cards in the game due to it having higher dmg and hp than every other card in its rank. It would be better than musketeer, baby dragon, and every other card in literally every way. On the other hand, making it 4 elixir and nerfing it’s stats would make it easily the worst card in the game. Like I said, the only way to make wizard work is to completely rework the cards design

      They need to change the price of cards like the valk and hog rider. Maybe even the musketeer. They all need to be more expensive. 5 elixir at least. The valk is once again in an overpowered state and even has a high usage and win rate but I strongly believe supercell won’t nerf it because it’s a crutch card for noobs.

    I would love for you to talk about the Heal Spell. Supercell literally gave up on balancing it and outright removed it, being an iconic moment in Clash Royale history. It could be in a video paired along with the Heal Spirit, which as far as I'm concerned also has abysmal win and usage rates

    Even as an experienced player that is semi competitive, the wizard holds a special place in my heart and I use him in high ladder games just because. It still works out for me because I know how to play and use him well

      How many Trophies are you at? I feel like Wizard never stays on the field bcs it just gets outspelled instantly. Even if you drop it in middle-front, i would be able to either hit other units or the tower for advantage

      Same, most people do use counters for him and if you pair him with a strong win condition and a high single target dmg card, he gets his worth easily.

    The problem with all popular games (whether deck builders, FPS games, etc.) is the inflation of certain categories/roles. Nowadays, we have loads of spells, counters, and ways to play. Back then, however, he was literally fireball thrower. For 1 extra elixir, you could throw hypothetically infinite fireballs at a troop. I like using the underdogs, but dang it is HARD to use a wizard properly with how good some alternatives are.

      Give him a HP buff, DMG nerf, and IQ buff. To buff his IQ, make his fireball like mortar projectile - it explodes where it was originally sent. Also a little projectile speed decrease and he should be a much more viable card

    The issue here is that wizard was put in a situation as the baseline for all range splash cards. Its the original and the most basic. The firecracker, executioner and many more serve the same role it with unique twists. The witch spawns in troops and has its own attacks. Firecracker has a very long range for the splash and deals tons of chip damage if left alone and is much cheaper. The executioner allows for chip damage and easy swarm removal. The wizard simply lacks anything making it worth the cost. My suggestion would be giving it something special like a charged up ability similar to the prince, lingering damage similar to a posion spell or something like a temporary magic sheild. This allows it to get even just a few extra hits and notnto die so quickly. Obviously theyd need heavy reworks on damage and range for these but each of these provide a unique and viable gimmic that makes the wizard stand out amongst its peers while not shoving it into broken territory if done right

    Maybe you could give it a DoT (Damage over Time) so that when it hits a card, it sets it on fire and thus adding more damage, that could be something very unique and you can play around with the other stats to balance it out

    Maybe an evolution could give him a chance nowadays. Make him either burn people after using fireball and do something similar to poison or evo firecracker. Maybe he builds up firepower the longer he goes without hitting a unit so if you place him at the back you are forcing the enemy to use all their spells to kill him so they won’t get one shotted. The spawn damage is a little boring but it’s better than nothing, same with the elixir cost.

    It's a great card to bridge people into higher skill arenas and teach them the importance of a GOOD deck. People are not drawn to change and wizard being underpowered in higher arenas forces people to adapt and improve

      It's absolute no skill and it's already bad enough that some players don't play spells that counter him but it gets even worse when people just run MK wizard zap and spells to simply counter everything you throw at them

      @@ultimatechad8738 logbait is just a dumbass deck if the enemy is using literally anything outside the holy meta™. But wizard? Wizard? It's basically a Skill Razor. If you lose against wizard then you're bad or your deck is bad. MK/Wiz/Zap can be literally destroyed by a decoy against wiz, a mini pekka executioner (+3 trade for you), and even ebarbs alone if you feel like being a decent human being is overrated. Pekka and MK also counter the deck pretty hard, and if they have spam you have log/arrows/zap. But of course, if you're running logbait because you couldn't see that coming, you're in for an ass clapping time.

    Alternate buff idea
    I think what wizard needs more than anything is to be more useful to skilled players. The way I think you do that is to give him a very long sight range (equal to or greater than the dart goblin) but not touch his actual range. This way you could place him in the center of your side and he could defend well and then counter-push. Basically, give him a dart goblin brain but not his range or speed. Using him right now is extra frustrating because you place him near the center to stop two-lane aggression and he very easily ignores the second lane (especially if they have some spell with knockback) when a dart goblin wouldn't and saves you 2 exilir. The main fear I have for this setup is that he would stall on your side and you could bank wizards, but with how many big spells are in the meta I think this would only really come up in like a log bait match-up. This separates it from the other 5 exilir cards because you aren't paying for great stats but a "smart" card that gets value by moving itself to the right places and not charging to the other side when other cards at the same price would.

      That’s a super cool idea, I think it could make for a really cool new card concept. I don’t feel like would work on the Wizard, however. The Wizard is meant to teach new players about crowd control, no more, no less.

      No dude this kind of card would be insufferable to play against. If you do this to wizard you need to make him die to fireball at the very least. Splash damage cards overall are too OP and none of them really need to be buffed rn.

      @@bakes1324 Well the reason I am advocating for this change is actually to keep the card from being insufferable. The Wizard isn't statically any better with this change and would still be generally bad at fighting as opposed to just a stat buff. For instance, with this change if you want to counter it you literally just have to wait for it to walk to the bridge and play a current counter to it. In a megaknight deck or a deck like it (which is what I assume you find annoying about wizard) on offense this change is basically meaningless. All it does is give it some niche role on defense to justify using it in the higher areas and add a 5-elixir card that can punish multi-lane bridge spam without derping out.

      That certainly is the case right now but I don't see a reason why that has to stay that way. In fact, having a card that is to "teach new players" but is really bad once players get gud is honestly pretty toxic for the game because it makes players feel that they over-invested in a bad card and makes people stop playing or play less. I think the musketeer is a good example of a basic card that has a higher skill cap. You get it early on and it teaches you about high dps support cards but it never becomes outright bad, and in some decks gives the archer queen a run for her money. And musk needed a rework to get there and I think Wizard should have a similar treatment too (just not an elixir change cause I am sick of 4 elixir cards).

    For a 5 elixir card, at least give it more health to compete with the executioner. If not, then make it 4 elixir. Although, that would mean it's going to overshadow the musketeer again. Yeah it's pretty complicated
    Edit: this is a chaotic idea, but imagine the wizard has a self-heal mechanic, a slow one (not like the battle healer). It adds to the wizard's survivability. That'd be cool.

    I honestly think a fair buff would be to kind of go the dart goblin route where we keep its HP to the point where it still dies to spells (maybe even nerf its health) and make it hit faster, BUT also make it so that when it attacks, it aims its fireball half a tile or so BEHIND the troop it's targeting (aka make the center of its splash radius more like the center of the swarm). This would be a good buff in my opinion because it would distinguish it from the executioner, make it good at taking out swarms, but it would still die easily. I don't think this would warrant reducing its elixir cost because then it becomes another 4 elixir card or a copy of the bomber if it's reduced to 3. If you buff its health and make it 6 elixir and maybe increase its sight and/or splash radius then I could see it being a good legendary.

      I would make it 4 elixir to be a competition to musketeer but in the same time making it worse in some scenarios to be a reason to use musk instead of wizard. Sure for 4 elixif it needs a nerf after an elixir cost decrease

    When I played this game, I used to use the wizard all the time. It always felt like a card that required a lot of skill to win with, because it could do a lot of damage and deal with swarms pretty well, but it was fragile enough that you had to worry about placement and protecting it more than some other cards.

Literally just had a match earlier and had my opponent drop 24 elix before I could drop 8. All I could drop was valk and hog and enemy dropped golem, electric dragon, baby dragon, tornado, prince. It has become a rigged game and it pathetic. Y'all don't even listen to ur player base. Tried to contact support and I was told there's nothing they can help with. Pathetic

    The wizard should hit the longest distance card. The ice wizard hits the nearest, the electro wizard hits the first two nearest cards, and the wizard should shoot cards in the back. This would make it easily deal with swarm by hitting the card in the middle of it.

    Since Wizard is quite similar to Bomber and Witch in terms of attacking, I think some reworks in terms of how it attacks may be necessary (e.g where the fireball it spawns lands). This could help to differentiate it and create new strategies and playstyles

    I think i could also go the fire spirti route, copy the ice variant but without the slow and a bigger enphasis on damage. The 3 elixir competition (Obviously with less stats) actually has room for the wizard. Having more consistent splash and damage than the firecracker and princess but with less range, less damage than the dart gobling but with splash and not dying to log, and mostly being the "balanced" option along side with archers with the splash and dual line as the difference between the two. It even would work with the bomber, having the option for similar damage for cheaper but not being able to target air. The 3 elixir range would also make the lack luster stas feel better since is less elixir to commit. Idk the fire spirit change work, i could see the wizard doing the same to work as well

    I would buff the damage, it's the one thing he should be good at and doing so would make me choose him over musket which cost less and has better range and over Exe which is slower but has more health
    One other possibility is giving him even more splash radious and slower fire rate, so it has less dps but can have his clutch moments where he can hit a tower, building and far away troops

    I see no problem with some cards being good for beginners and then bad at the top level.
    Skeleton Army had been a good example of this. Awesome card when I first started, but eventually I got better at the game and could do most things skarmy does with just skeletons.

    My idea for buffing the wizard is giving him damage over time. Makes him a little better against tanks, which is his biggest weakness. This keeps his strength against swarm the same while his ability to kill tanks not dogwater like it is today.

      Never said he should be good against tanks, just better than what he does right now. He is absolutely shit at killing tanks, so to make him slightly more versatile and a more compelling choice, he should have more damage overall. Damage overtime is one of the ways to increase his overall damage other than just increasing his main attack.

    I think they should rework by decreasing the radius, decreasing the damage, but increasing the hitspeed. They should also allow the wizard to charge up an extra fireball when idle, so he can shoot 2x in rapid succession. It will maken him a card where you have to time properly to get a double fireball, thus adding a level of skill. This will make him more interesting, while serving a different role from executioner.

What about making the wizard having a little stun effect when he connects to a target, some sort of "burn effects" that scales higher depending on the bigger amount of health enemies have, or even inflict a debuff like the opponent either deal 20% less daamge or take more damage from any other sources

    If I would change the Wizard. I would like if they could experiment him work similar to inferno dragon, with a 3 tier damage increase, while locked to an enemy.
    With the first fireball hit having a small radius and around 40% less damage,
    then the second and third attack would have a medium radius, with a slightly better damage than the current wizard today,
    and finally, after the 4th attack and beyond, he'll have a massive damage increase and a radius as big as the one today.
    Or maybe the radius could work the opposite, starting bigger, but less damage, to endup more concetrated (smaller) with its highest damage locked to the tank.

    Out of the changes mentioned, the spawn damage is the one I want to see tried out. I don't see it as copying the other wizard cards, but by making it a consistency that wizards have spawn damage. The only way to make such a simple card compete with the other three that fill its role in top ladder is to make more ways to use it and I think this approach is much more interesting than just more buffs

    I feel that even if wizard's elixir was decreased by one and no stats were changed, he'd be balanced at BEST. He's just so useless.
    I literally have trouble finding cards that don't counter him. He even dies to skarmy if placed on top of him. Seriously, he needs some love. He's too much of a comittment and it's impossible to get any value. He doesn't do any meaningful damage to the tower, he has pretty much no health, and his splash is terrible since most of it is unused since he attacks the closest troop.

      The Musketeer currently sit at a 8% WR with a 45% WR, the most average a card can get in the eyes of Supercell.

    I think it’d be interesting for the wizard to become the high damage 5 elixir splash card. It always struck me as a card that should do good damage and I think it could be better. How would I go about doing this? No clue.

      Glass canon definitely seems to the the role that fits the wizard. Probably AoE that's, slow but evenly damages, but maybe less damage to large units? Or a little knockback for medium units?
      I think this would have the musketeer and wizard be complementary rather than direct contenders.

    From a casual player point of view i never understood why he got so much hate I've been using him in almost all my decks from the day that i got him and he's the first card that i upgraded to lvl 14 for me he's just a reliable card especially in over time x2 elixir he takes care of a lot of annoying troops plus he deals a good amount of damage I'd say tho if they make him a 4 card elixir maybe it would be a huge buff for him, he's probably in my top 5 cards of all time

    I have some weird idea about changing wizard. Although I don't think any card have experienced such a big change (except heal spell which just get deleted) , having a special case is worth for such a classic existence in the SuperCell universe. Anyway, what I want to say is that what if it is changed into a legendary card and give it a new, special mechanic ? For example, leaving a damaging area when wizard hit an enemy, maybe the damaging area will expand or having a higher damage depends on the size of enemy hit box or health, maybe leaving a fire track on the way the enemy walk; giving a debuff to the enemy of receiving more damage or recieve continues damage , maybe able to spread to nearby troops; having a damaging area circling around himself while the closer the enemy come, the greater the damage dealt; able to heal or giving buff to cards with fire (fire ball, infernal tower, lava hound, fire spirit, etc)when wizard is alive. Just imagine how many things can develope based on the properties of fire.

    Is it like how in the Pokémon Showdown community low ladder play and high ladder/tourney play is very different due to the lower ladder players lacking skill/knowledge and/or using suboptimal teams?

    What if they reworked it so that if the wizard was targeting one card over and over it does slightly more damage each cast like a inferno tower (he already throws fire). This way it can still kill the swarms, but has use against bigger cards if it’s kept alive.

    My proposed change to wizard is a two handed throw, with 2 different fireballs, splitting the damage between 2 fireballs that still hit at the same rate the normal fireball hits at, but redistributes the aggro at which he can hit swarms, making him much more viable in his expected role. For example, Wizard would be useful against graveyard, instead of taking centuries to lock and attack, he'd throw one fireball and throw another .3 seconds after, then wait his current attack rate to throw again. Wizard's biggest problem is inferiority to spells, the damage split for quicker aggro lock makes him much more useful in todays meta where we might see more units deployed in the arena then ever before.

    Idea: make I get knocked backward like a firecracker. And then if any troop is between the Wizard and his target troop, it would instead hit that target. Or you can just make it always retarget on the closest troop except when it is on the tower. Also, instead of doing single hit normal splash damage, make it spawn mini poisons like evo firecracker. Nerf him in other aspects but I think the best thing the wizard can get are complete changes as raw stats hasn’t really helped him. I get you have to nerf him a lot in other areas but it would make him somewhat niche but viable in some decks

    I think they should buff it by when it gets deployed it comes down with a fire ball or a small fire splash knocking enemy troops back. Just like the other wizards

    No one is probably reading this, but here's my idea:
    -Make the wizard's atack cooldown be much slower
    -Give it 3 times as much damage
    -The splash damage area would do just enough damage to kill goblins, so it's much better at single target
    -Increase his splash area by a teeny tiny bit
    -Give it the spawn damage so it fits with the other 2 wizards, i would also change the ice wizard's spawn area much bigger, the electro wizard would be the same, and the regular wizard would be very small but decently powerful, so you can defend things like royal hogs easier.
    This might sound way too complex for a troop unlocked so early on, and that's the point, this way, it would be less appealing for midladder, while also separating it from other splash damage cards, i think it would revive it without making it unfair for low-midladder, as well as keeping it to die to fireball so it's easier to defend, at the same time it could be better for baiting fireball and poison😊
    Edit: now that i think about it, this just sounds like another Phoenix, a much stronger version of a card for 1 elixir more, which would be the case for the musketeer, my solution is to give the wizard a terrible initial attack cooldown, and make the musketeer shoot a little faster, also improving her terrible win rate despite high usage rate, so you can react quickly to things like balloon, and wizard for things like royal hogs

    20:40 imo the problem of the wizard Is that he cant defend him self, take a Witch. She spawn scheleton, take a ice Wiz, he slow things, take a musk, he can hit with decent distance, Queen has so much healt... Wizard Just does not have nothing

    I think doubleing the damage of the targeted troupe/building (not tower) should be a good idea, maybe decreasing the damage or the hitting speed.
    For example don't make him able to one-shot minions (with damage area) should be a good deal for lower arenas/mid ladder.
    This would make him a very versatile and unic card.

      Lol no. Wizard is by design a noob card. It was never good and was always meant to be a bad card that little children could easily use. Wizard is literally the card for 12 year olds and those that are REALLY bad at clash royale. If you use wizard, I can automatically tell you haven't won a grand challenge and are dogshit. Its main problem is its weakness to fireball, which NEVER changed.

    The Wizard used to have purpose for a long while as the only splash damage troop that was able to hit air with significant damage (the witch beign low DPS and with a tiny AoE), making him for a long while the single best support troop for tanks, especially the Pekka that could get rid of high hp troops for the wizard. But that very useful niche was anihilated the second the executioner showed up, a card with the same role and cost but MUCH harder to get rid of than the wizard and enough damage output to easily deal with anything vulnerable to arrows, meaning the wizard's only edge was in fighting tankier flying troops that the executioner struggles against; not worth the vulnerability to fireball.

    I would love to see the wizard shoot 2 fireballs back to back. This will make it technically a faster firer rate but it a really cool flashy way.

      Make it a 4 elixir card though that could impact the musketeer but I think it's a good change
