Wow.. how interesting! I was surprised at some of the changes. This kind of database is extremely important for those of us who are just starting out using Gouasche. I noticed a couple of the colors that faded are in my personal collection, but I don’t use gouache as often as I use watercolor, but then again we run into the same fading problem with some of the pigments there as well. Thank you for taking the time to do such an extensive study ..and putting it into a database that’s available to everyone. God bless you as you continue your artistic journey and share it with all of us.
I’m sure I’m not the only artist on here currently sighing in relief that all the paint I bought is perfectly fine based on your research! I always pay attention to lightfastness on their labels but this proof is reassuring. Thank you for going to such lengths!
Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to make all these tests!! I started gouache because of your videos, and your recommendations and reviews have been instrumental to the materials I have purchased! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the beautiful and inspiring paintings you make and share! ❤️❤️
Thank you so much for this information. I have not bought many brands of gouache and these results are awesome because the brands that I have in my possession are the ones with the best results. Of course I went with the brands that I have because they were the ones that you liked the most. My journey with gouache started ever since I have found you. You are so talented and inspiring!!! You have a way of explaining the how to and the why that my brain comprehend. Learning from you is so easy. Once again thank you for sharing these amazing tests and results. Your the best!
Thank you so much for sharing this information; and not even charging for it but sharing it for free 🤩Unfortunately I can press the like button only once 😕 Have a great weekend 🥰
Thank you for sharing your passion for gouache! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your lightfast tests and then the time to produce the videos.😘
Hey Sarah! thank you for these lightfastness tests you do, this is so helpful and informative. The ASTM ratings and the ratings some companies give their colors can be outright false, so independent tests like yours, Kim Crick, and handprint (Bruce MacEvoy) offers us artists more accurate results compared to what the industry says.
@@theroadhome_Liz_Summers Crick's database was great for when I was buying some Paul Rubens watercolors. Learning about pigments and their properties is fun, hope you enjoy the journey!
@@SarahBurnsStudio his was a goldmine of pigment info, not only for lightfastness, but also for which company offers a better version of a paint (ex. Which company offers the more saturated but cooler Cadmium Yellow). Helped me a ton when first looking for gouache colors.
So many details in gouache… I can see why you’re fascinated (and why I’m getting there!) 😂 Thank you so much for doing this and sharing with us, Sarah. ❤
Wonderful. Thanks for doing these tests so I don't have to! I didn't know about Prussian blue fading in tints, but it explains why Schminke don't have a Prussian blue in their Horadam range as they are super fussy about lightfastness. I have made my own Prussian blue gouache, so I think I'll do some tints and see how it fares.
Hi Sarah. Thanks for all that information. You saved me a lot of time. I love all of your videos and greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into creating them. One question. If I thin my acrylic or regular gouache down to look like watercolor, will that affect the lightfastness?
One thing to keep in mind if you've got fugitive colours on your palette is that you can get uv filtering glass when framing the paintings to protect them.
Sarah I invested in Shinhan a while ago based on your recommendation and love them so I am very happy with this test. Also I was impressed with the results of Ateza, do you think if mixed with a different brand of white more lightfast it would improve the longevity of Arteza? I have hesitated getting them because I am concerned about the lightfastness, but as a rule I only tint with my Holbein and W n N whites.
I don’t know if the white is the only culprit. I think it has to do with the pigments they use If you love their gouache it’s worth doing your own test. 2-4 months in the window then you’ll have your answer!
The M Graham performance was pleasing to me as a fan of the range. I was very impressed with the Napthol Red's lightfastness. It's a colour I avoid as it's not the highest rated, and the Australian sun is pretty brutal on cooler-biased reds, but maybe I should just relax a little there.
Ohhhh… I had no idea Prussian blue was such a problem child. I love that colour 😢. I always think of reds/pinks as being problematic so I’m cautious with them, but thought blues were safer.
Had to laugh at myself, I held my breath on a couple I like but it was great to see they did well. Oh, the shin Han too. We should be getting a new box any time now. I still r e a l l y appreciate that they fit in the mail box. Too many porch pirates in the us. Than you.
That’s really interesting - great work - i don’t understand why the white mix is more likely to fade - is it diluting the pigment or another quality in the white please? Thanks really enjoyed this.
I'm a bit confused why you didn't talk about "stars". Like one star violets and pinks do disappear, it's just the thing they do! It's only important if they're aren't one star.
Some manufacturers either lie or "stars" are sometimes not accurate enough, hence it's always useful to double check and Sarah covered a lot of brands for us with this video.
Consider the climate the painting will hang in when considering the test results Anyone in a northern climate will see the same results as me. If you live elsewhere, follow other test results from those regions.
I have my favourites, and I was like "please be okay, please be okay" hahaha(they were!) I would be really interested to see how the HIMI changes in a closed sketchbook...it was such a drastic change that I wonder whether it is all UV related?

No surprise on the Himi's. I have some but they're just for fun or sketchbook or maybe if something turns out really great, I'll scan it for prints.
I’m sure I’m not the only artist on here currently sighing in relief that all the paint I bought is perfectly fine based on your research! I always pay attention to lightfastness on their labels but this proof is reassuring. Thank you for going to such lengths!
I love that you cut the swatches in half (which makes it so much easier to see the difference) and you included various tints!

Yep, I first learned about lightfast and pigment data from the Handprint website, it's fascinating

Clicked so fast! I'm such a lightfast geek but can never seem to do my own tests LOL
It's so easy! My main issue is not enough window space and very humid environment outside 😅
Thanks for this. I'm glad I picked up the Meeden as my beginner gouache set over the Arteza, at least based on these results.
Wow super excited & surprised by some of these. Thanks so much for the wonderful undated information about gouache brands.

It does return to normal when placed away from light (not convenient for hanging art but still interesting!)

yeah but they are not a perfect solution. infact true UV filtering glass like those museums use. is Super Expensive.

You might want to do tests for your favorites in the australian sun as that will be MUCH different to Scotland! But hopefully they will still be fine.
