    I love Rosa Gallery... I get them straight from the Ukraine. I have to wait about a month for them, but they're worth it. It seems like Eastern European colors are more opaque and I love it!

      Nothing wrong with opaque watercolors. I know some people don't like them but as long as you know that you can use them the way they are intended and everything works fine.

    This was my first full set of Western watercolors.? when, after my precious son passed away 2 1/2yrs ago; me, my eldest and my best friend decided to try and merge East and West in his honor. Long story short…he got me back into doing art probably 8-9 years ago when he was in China. I’ve studied calligraphy and traditional painting with several incredible Chinese tutors including one who taught here in the US for 30yrs. My best friend and daughter are the “real” artists, but I’m trying my best before my vision disappears completely.
    My Chinese tutor told me to at least start with single pigments and get used to mixing my own. I now have all but the newest Rosa’s Single pigments and most white night’s. These ARE incredible paints and because they don’t stuff them with fillers; I can easily adapt them to my xuan paper if I want to use them in that medium.

    I have the 35 set and added some convenience colours from the “romantic” set. I love these paints. Yes they share the same name as me (it’s pretty nice to have a metal tin with my name on it!) but they also paint so well and are so fun to work with for a fair price

    I take the flap off all my metal tins. I don’t use it and it’s just in the way. I’ve been using Rosa for about 2 years and really enjoy them. I bought a 21 color set and added 6 other colors. The only color I gave been disappointed with is their Quinacradone Gold. It’s very dull and doesn’t have that bright yellow punch at the end. Enjoyed your swatching and review.

    Thanks for the swatching video! I recently bought this set but hadn't unwrapped the pans until you pointed out that the ends of each pan had the name on one end and the properties on the other. There are even little perforations at the edges so as to cleanly remove the central part of the stickers. I think Rosa Gallery takes some liberties with pigment content vs the names they give their paints. Since they are a Ukrainian company I'm willing to forgive. My Chromium Green Oxide pan is labeled PG17 on the sticker. I couldn't find the box but when it turns up I'll see what it says. As for Cobalt Turquoise, I read somewhere that PB28 turns green when aluminum is added to it. I found a tube of Daniel Smith labeled Cobalt Turquoise which says the only pigment in it is PB36, but I also found a tube of M.Graham called Cobalt Teal that shows its pigment as being Cobalt Aluminate PB28.
    Thanks again for your tutorials!

    I have the 14 pan set of mono pigments and I love it. The paints activate very easily which is a blessing and a curse because it makes layering difficult without disturbing the already dried layer below. Not a deal breaker but just need to learn how to use them differently than other watercolors. They’re like a hybrid between watercolor and gouache.

    I want to protect cobalt turquoise. It’s single pigment and it’s still pb28. Some other brands offer this pigment in this shade too. It depends on the way of processing the pigment. Like cadmiums with same pigment can have different color because of processing.

    Try mixing violet and phthalo green, it's a really nice blue black than can be used for final touches and mark-making. I like having an almost black and using it instead of a pen for some bits of interest after the painting is done.

    I love watching your swatching. I built my own palettes from open stock pans, most of which are Rosa. I really dislike the standard colours you get all the time, always too many yellows and not enough pinks and purples! That whole first row I only really like the golden yellow and I avoid cad colours and don’t really like yellow/oranges in general. Not really a fan of dio violets even though I love purples. But finally someone else who doesn’t like ultramarine blue! 🙌 so overrated 😂 the cobalt turquoise is my absolute favourite though, it’s my most heavily used colour now. Also a big fan or earth reds. I prefer having fun convenience colours to doing loads of mixing. I’m a very abstract painter and tend to do things quickly haha

    I love your attitude! 😅 I can't say I'm loving the Rosa Gallery paint colors, though. The darkest yellow is pretty good. But I require more reds in a palette. I do a lot of floral painting, and especially like poppies so I need very rich, dark reds. I wasn't impressed with the blues, either. It needs an indigo, and that cobalt turquoise is just too pale! I would have no use for the emerald, as it's not a very "natural" green. I think their "Green" is a Hooker's Green. Is the Chromium Oxide like a Perylene Green? I do like that color a lot. Their Burnt Sienna looks much like my DS Aussie Red Gold, which is a very useful and pretty color. Great review! I really enjoyed it! 😊

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  4 месяца назад +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed this. I agree, this palette wasn't very impressive but these are their single pigment set. A different set might have been nicer. I prefer a more muted palette but all in all they were good for the colors they gave.

    • @goat8477
      @goat8477 2 месяца назад

      The 'green' (PG 8) is in fact a single pigment. All my Hookers green are a mix of 2-3 different colors. If you need Indigo try to mix your own with a black and a blue. These mixes make awesome Indigos. :-) And the Chromium green contains a chromium salt, whereas I was surprised to see that Perylene green is considered a Pbk Pigment. I sometimes think finding the chemistry behind the pigments is a hobby in itself 🙂

    I think how we name and interpret colours is also reliant on our culture and language. what one person calls red could be orange in another person eyes. that's probably why the flame red is called red instead of orange.
    I think it's not unfitting because it does get this more pink-ish hue when you use a lot of water and that something I expect from a red. from a true orange I would expect more salmon and warm-yellow tones when I water them down.
    and you probably can paint real nice fire with it...using it for mixing and painting for skin might also be really nice. or for florals. it seems like a really useful colour to have.
    I love red oranges.
    I really like that they included a cobalt turquoise because I use that a lot when painting figures as an accent or mixing colour. I make my line with a vermillion coloured ink pen and then at PT102 and cobalt turquoise to it.
    The one I have (schmincke) is a bit more vibrant I think, but this one is still pretty nice.
    combined with the cobalt blue, phthalo blue and maybe some greens it might be really nice to use for tropical seascapes ( the north sea is more murky green brown in most days haha).
    classical carmine is that pigment that's made of cochenille bugs. if you look at actual carmine/cochenille paints they are actually relatively blue-leaning/pinkish in hue too. it also looks similar to schmincke's permanent carmine. I wouldn't expect it to be a naphthol even with the pigment...I feel naphthol red is much more neutral as a red.
    I wish they included am actual viridian instead of phthalo green, I think that green is more manageable. I like having a blue-ish green but phthalo green is a bit difficult to work with for me because it's so intense. depends on the brands too though.
    also not sure if the umber is that useful for me personally. I am sure it's useful for others but it looks a bit light to me. I'd like to have a really dark brown or blue grey to make really dark mixes.

    • @IllustrationsByPete

      All good points. To your first point, yes people refer to colors differently in different areas. Everything I am saying is just pertaining to me and my experience. These are good paints and I've enjoyed using them. There are definitely colors I do not use and I don't like, but that isn't a comment on the quality. i just find some of the names odd, that's all. Some of them are absolutely beautiful. 👍🏻

    I have not tried these but i have a big White Nights set I got years ago (bought open stock) and I'm pretty sure these are manufactured in the same factory as White Nights so I've seen no reason to pick these up as it would basically be duplicates of what I already have lol though I misplaced my cadmium lemon and am really bummed about it. That was a color that actually surprised me and I had slept on for awhile and has earned a permanent place on my palette as my "cool" yellow.
    You're hurting me with ultramarine slander haha it's such a great mixing blue and I tried using cobalt blue in it's place once to see and it just wasn't the same, I think a good ultramarine has a smidge bit more tint strength which I like and honestly it is the only blue I have on some of my limited "travel" palettes because of how versatile it is with mixing especially and you can get really nice Payne's Greys mixing it with either a burnt sienna or a quin burnt orange (PO48).
    I understand the frustration with phthalo green too, as I find it TOO tinting at times and now go for veridian instead as it isn't as strong. Though with the discontinuation of PO48, I will probably find myself using it more to mix my own convenience sap green once I run out of my tubes as finding the PY150, PO48, PG7 versions are going to become harder and harder :( THOUGH! I am glad that there are some PR101s (like the burnt sienna in this set) that looks like a pretty close dupe for PO48, so it gives me hope that it won't be a huge loss like PO49 was
