- hopefully this helps for the guys that asked... if you guys are interested in how to split cases with the stihl tool let me know... just figured this is probably more helpful 🤷♂️
The puller it’s $250 there’s a similar one for $50 at harbor freight.
Nice man thanks for looking into that... I thought I was crazy tbh but I was finding the same... I definitely dont skimp on my tools and I just didn't realize it was that much 😬 it has pulled ridiculous amounts of bearings off tho and still works perfectly 👌

I just popped out a bearing from my Makita dcs 6401 by following this advice, wooden bench it wasn’t going out, put some ar500 under it and made sure it was flat and POP, bearing came right out. Thank you so much I was really starting to lose hope before pulling up this video.

Another great instructional John! Even though I have 25+ rebuilding saws, I always like to watch the techniques of other techs . My mentor showed me his ways when I was just starting and after trying multiple other ways, I always go back to the tried and true. I like to freeze my bearings while heating the case half’s to 220 degrees, the bearings drop right in and fully seat I then pull the crank through the bearings. There’s many ways to do it properly, this way is what works well for me. Keep up the great content and Merry Christmas John!
You got it man... I wouldn't recommend this method if you have the proper pullers and tools thats for sure.. .lot of people apparently fight these bearings and cases and are scared to do it... service center charges more than what the saw is worth to fix it so they are stuck with no good solution...
@@johnscustomsaws yeah I agree, I always feel bad for the customers when I tell them what their looking at to rebuild one. That said, Matt Olson makes some good tools reasonably priced for the do it your self guys from what I’ve seen. A fleet command uses them, so they should hold up well.
The right tools are so important! Just ordered a bunch of Stihl tools cause Was not able to go further in my repairs ( and not enough experience to work around it 😅)! Yeah that case separater is one thing I still miss but it’s 200€🤦♂️

Always some good tips. I’ve seen many different ways people do this. We can all learn something new. Thanks for all the details. Some things I get complacent on sometimes and can use someone else’s perspective. I don’t have but a handful of specific tools. Sometimes i have to use the shmammer method 😂

just got the bar stud tool,,c splitter tool,seal tool ,and bearing press tool,still i learn all the various techniques, centering the crank and preventing prolapse of the seal ,gunna learn on 036,thanks

Great tips John.I've done a mix of what you showed and the old freezer and oven technique.Freeze the crank in the freezer heat the bearings in the oven and they fall on.Then I freeze the crank with the bearings on and heat the case halves in the oven.Then the crank and bearings will fall into the first case half and the second case half will go on mostly and finish it by pulling with the bolts.Merry Christmas John,Thank's for sharing all your tricks and mods with us.
I have heard that works really well i just haven't done it... definitely can see that being a better method especially for installing without the specialty tool... what temperature do you heat the bearings to if you don't mind me asking?
@@johnscustomsaws I set the oven to 200 F .Some guys use a heat gun and a temp gun to heat the cases,but I have neither so I just set the oven and so far I've been lucky.

8:40 a used brake rotor might work perfect for that. It’s round, reasonably flat, sturdy and solid, and you probably already have one or can get one.

@@chrisseger6870 thats pretty awesome to hear man honestly... it would be pretty gnarly to do fund raisers to buy the crazy stuff like the turbine engine... they are around 5 to 7 grand depending on the setup... then raffle the saw off at the end or something so im not getting the money... i just dont feel right asking for anything its just the way i am... but what a great way to do wild builds... i may not be the smartest or most mechanical guy but i am that guy that isnt one bit intimidated to hit the thrusters or whatever the hell you do on a jet saw hahaha

I was watching buckins video the other day and his saw builder/dealer idles the saw when breaking in…… I loled at that.
Yep I dont like to talk bad on another guys methods but I just have a different opinion based on personal experience I guess is the nicest way I can put it... I have seen saws that had been idled for a tank of fuel for break in and I didn't like what I saw... and multiple saws as well not just acone time freak thing ... I just dont get the logic behind it maybe I am missing something 🤷♂️
@@johnscustomsaws best way to prove a point is to test it. Maybe get a cheap saw and do the full tank idle test. The cut with it and see if it cleans up or not? That way it’s definitive what is the best method.
@@FishFind3000 i agree... it really does get that hot metal smell to the saw and obviously loads it up with carbon... but exactly it might clear up after a bit of use and be perfectly fine... I worry about glazing tho tbh and I have had such great results doing the heat cycles I would have to see some serious evidence to change my mind but hey never know... I definitely dont havecall the answers and I have heard very knowledgeable people have opinions on each side of the argument so its one I just don't know what to think

Love your camera , it’s really good quality dude, really important for filming, especially quality content such as the videos you make. Really curious to know what you think about husky’s "auto tune" ? Is it any good or somewhat comparable to the 500i? Wondering because I was gifted a brand new 545 mark ii, I love it and I know a good carb makes a massive difference.. I put a SmartCarb on my 2020yz125x and it’s really good but ofc it’s not KTMTPI good..
The mark II auto tune huskys are awesome... the first version of the auto tune series had tons of problems but they have them sorted now... the 500i is a much bigger saw so its hard to compare it to anything under a 90 cc honestly... the reason I don't do huskys is I am so booked solid I can be very selective on the saws I do so I stay in my lane and just do certain models so I can be efficient and perfect a few builds vs doing a wide variety of saws... if that makes sense... but I am a certified husky tech as well my man

i did look i couldn't find that exact puller and the price range on the ones i did find were all over the place and i know that some of the cheap pullers are junk so i dont feel comfortable recommending them... this one was made in germany and its good quality
Hi, John!! I have a question: I have a stihl ms 201tc, I heated the crankcase, put new bearings, oil seals, but there is a play in the crankshaft. what would be the problem?
Would you ever try heating g the case half in an oven. The case would expand faster than the bearing, and the bearing falls out we used to to that with dirt bike and quad engines.
Separating case halves was always interesting with a transmission inside, but that saw was giving you a hard time.
With the actual tool its super easy and would have been a pointless video honestly... the proper tool is the way to go i was just showing a way to do it without so it was interesting

Run the screw gun on your puller. It doesn't hurt anything and saves your arms as well as a ton of time. Been doing it that way in my shop for years with no issues.

Yes... you missed the point... I explained i can do it with parts from a hardware store and without heat or penatrating oil to show its not that difficult... people wanted me to do this video because they battle splitting csses.. they obviously use heat but my whole point was that if they are battling it they are doing something wrong

Easiest is probably 462 or 661... best results i would say 880 or 461... they will give you the biggest gains at least the saws I do... I don't do many models anymore

I’d disagree that having a tool equals knowledge on using said tool. There are some that have the means to buy but not yet used. Ever heard of: see one, do one, teach one? I’m assuming you had a first time using those specialty tools; did you know exactly how they worked on every situation pushing or pulling. I think not. Some people are visual learners. Have you ever read some shitty instructions and thought I wonder if there is a RUclips video. Your analogy is flawed sir. You could show both methods. Just my 2c. Great content just the same.
The specialty tool is so easy to use a monkey could do it... certainly someone that buys a case splitting tool should understand how to use it or probably should hire someone to do it... there is only one way it works... so YES I absolutely understood how to use it within 30 seconds... mechanical people understand how that stuff works and don't need a tutorial... if I made the video u are describing people would think I am losing my mind... so I showed a way to do it without the tool...
