For such a small ensemble it is a challenge to do Faure´s Requiem. What is perhaps lost in lack of a big choir and a big orchestra can be gained in intimacy and nearness. And I think VOCES8 with this special orchestration succeeds in bringing this music close to us, for me this is a new a wonderful way to listen to this music. Thank you all so much!
For what I understood of this piece when I worked on it, is it was composed for a small vocal ensemble, not Big choir and orchestra. It was first performed for an ordinary man's funeral who had died in the parish of La Madeleine in Paris. It is designed to be intimate and profound.
@@trinette31 Thank you Ludivine for this information! The examples of this Requiem on RUclips I earlier have listened too are often with big choir and big orchestra.
Still, just 8 singers must be a minimum in performing this. I dont think it ever was performed with less than 8 singers. And I think the 8 singers in this are perfectly aware that they have to prove their existence. And they do.
Been a fan of Voces8 ever since I heard them for the first time. For me, this rendition of the Faure, even though for a small line-up, is definitive. Music of heaven.
Gabriel Fauré was SO inspired when he composed this Requiem. The small ensemble was also an inspiration as every small nuance in the music was clear & spot on - something I missed when singing this masterpiece in a bigger choir & orchestra. Bravo is not enough. I can just bow my head & give thanks to everyone in this performance.
In 1988, when I was a high school student, I first encountered Fauré's Requiem. Ever since, I've always found it regrettable that I couldn't find a soloist performance that perfectly suited the 'Pie Jesu', the highlight of the piece. Most soprano voices didn't fit, and boy sopranos (trebles) often lacked expressiveness. Today, I had the pleasure of listening to a performance that even Fauré would agree was perfect. The Offertorium was an unbelievable rendition as well. Voces8! I'm grateful to be living in the same era as you all.
At times i smiled to myself because it was almost too good! Fantastic individual performances eg pie jesu. Sublime. This choir provide such a service to humanity..bringing breathtaking music into this world at a quality that is out of this world. Best choir in the world hands down.
I totally totally agree. I confess that, listening on my own with top quality headphones, I had to pause listening to it many times - I found it so overwhelmingly beautiful I needed to time to handle the resulting emotions. So yes, almost too good. But I'm so glad it is. And yes, the best choir in the world, hands down.
There was a performance of this requiem at a church and during the 5th movement when the sopranos were holding "lux" (22:49) right before that incredible harmony shift to the bVI... and as if by coincidence or divine intervention, the sun had just come out from behind a cloud shining into the church stain glass windows. And so I will always think of this moment as something so divine. The intamacy of this ensemble with such pure and exposed soprano voices in that moment is otherworldly.
As someone who has loved this work for decades and who was a member of a choir that sang it for a congregation, I still find it very thought-provoking. I think perhaps God appreciated this performance.
Bellissima musica e perfetta esecuzione. Pur con un testo così triste in cui la voce del basso ci atterrisce le voci angeliche sanno portare conforto e gioia.. Grazie ❤
This was the very first piece I performed when I arrived at Yale as a freshman, as a member of the choir for the university’s Episcopal Church services. It was all such a new and exciting experience for me in so many different ways. I had never been part of a “professional” choir before, and actually being paid to do something I would gladly do for free was an absolutely mind blowing experience for me! And then, at my very first rehearsal, I was introduced to this masterpiece. It was one of those experiences that stay with you for the rest of your life. I was not familiar with the work. I had never sung it. I had never even heard it before. But I will always remember that first rehearsal, where I was doing my very best to sing while absolutely sobbing. I had never heard or performed anything so transcendently beautiful. Thankfully, I was not the only crying. Many members of the choir were finding it difficult to hold it together. But after the tears, and with the brilliant music direction of Fenno Heath, I came to know that piece, to live it and breathe it, in a way that I had never experienced before, and have only experienced a few times since then. We performed the work very much as it is presented here, with a small chamber orchestra. And instead of 8 voices, we had 12. But that’s where the similarities end! I think we did a good job with the material, but nothing that came close to this sublime performance by Voces8 and this fine ensemble. But listening to this today has brought back some happy memories for me, and reminded me why this work has always held such a special place in my heart. Many thanks to everyone involved in this glorious performance! ❤
I think your comment should be on the top of the list. You that have such an experience of this music. I have not. It was not many years ago I found this wonderful music. I just had the luck to be one of the first that commented this music when it was layed out.
Thank you for a beautiful comment, Charles. I have a similar problem, getting overwhelmed by emotions and tears welling up, when in my small choir we hit it right in the "right" pieces of music. Were you ever able to control this and if so, how did you do it?
I finally got to rehearse and perform this piece all in one day in 2011. Members of various community choirs across the Denver-metro area were invited to perform and sing this piece in remembrance and for the relief efforts for the Haiti 2010 earthquake. The orchestra performed Barber's Adagio and Faure's Requiem followed. The Requiem was done in candlelight at night. The soft, warm glow, the music, the church setting, the somber nature of the concert made many people emotional. It was a performance I'll never forget.
Andrea Haines voice is like honey. Pie Jesu is one of my favourite pieces, its such a sublime, subtle and pure arrangement of notes. It is so underrated and I just only I was still a treble so I could perform this now as an adult. Thank you for this beautiful recording Voces8 x
Wow. Stunning performance of epic proportion. I don't think I have ever heard this Requiem done so divinely perfect before, but then, I would expect no less from Voces8. Absolutely exquisite. Thank you.
God this is good! Just eight voices express the tenderness and clarity of this monument of classical music. Andrea and Jonathan just shining in the solo parts. Incredible. Thank you!
I listen to the Sanctus over and over. The harp and violin are sublime, and the arranger gets huge credit for this great version of Faures masterpiece.
This is one of my favorite music pieces of all time. It always moves me. Suitable for tomorrow, All Souls Day, thinking of those I've loved who had gone before. I could listen to this over and over and probably will.
You haven’t heard it until you’ve heard it in its intended form: Catholic Traditional Latin Requiem Mass or All Souls Day Mass. I’ve experienced it unfortunately only once. Very hard to find but well worth the experience.
If I am remembering correctly, Faure wrote this Requiem for the small choir in the church where he was organist - La Madeleine in Paris. Pie Jesu was written for a boy soprano - no vibrato just a clean direct appeal to God for the repose of souls to Rest In Peace. Verdi’s Requiem was written for a large chorus with orchestra performing for an audience not in church. That’s why Faure’s requiem is so appealing and intimate. It was written to be performed at an actual funeral Mass in Church. Voices 8 does it well. 22:20

This interpretation has a lot of charm! I was on stage for this work, and today this orchestration gave me the feeling of rediscovering it, I really enjoyed myself. Thanks to everyone who made it possible, especially to Voces8. Bravo!
Merci merci 😊
Just heavenly. The small ensemble is so delicate. Kudos for the high sopranos singing without a vibrato. And I love how the first violinist is just smiling to himself! I sang this at Carnegie Hall as a first soprano in the New York Chorale Society so I got the grand experience. This is one under a diamond studded spectacle glass!
I sang this many times as a chorister in my youth, and know it intimately. This is beautiful, sensitive performance and Andrea demonstrated breath control to die for in the Pie Jesu , it’s so much harder to sing well than it looks in the score! Bravo all!
I am a Japanese who loves you! Last year, the choir that I belong to also performed this song. Thank you for playing my favorite song! Please come to Japan again! I will definitely go listen!
The amen beginning at 12:35 is so wonderful. There's just the hint of rubato on the first amen that is perfectly synchronised by everyone, and the tenor resolving on the final cadence is like caramel. I can't see how this could be sung any better, ever.
The intimacy of this performance is beyond sublime. VOCES8 never disappoints and the instrumental ensemble was faultless. I may have missed some of the grander dynamics and vocal variations within a larger choir due to the utter precision and purity of these amazing singers, but their incomparable talent takes my breath away. Thank you for gifting us this heart-healing performance.
Ce requiem est superbe, il permet de ressentir la lumière intérieure de l'oeuvre, en particulier, mais pas seulement, avec le Pie Jesu d'Andrea Haines, d'une infinie délicatesse
My first ever choral performance was the Faure Requiem and it has always been my favorite piece of music. VOCES8's interpretation is the best I've heard so far. I have never heard a choir blend so well with an orchestra!
@@staffanolofsson8201 sorry, I missed your question, which I didn't know the answer to in either case, but it seems you've solved the mystery for both of us! Cheers
May i just say that that was probably the best performance of Faure's Requiem that I have heard EVER! I know this work well, but - in the vernaclaur - you blew it out of the park. I cannot find polite words to express how awesome that was. thank you so much, all of you.
It is glorious! Funny enough must of the time the opposite occurs (the smaller the ensemble the less well blended). Voces8 are truly astounding musicians.
This orchestration crystalizes the essence of the composition so beautifully! At first, I missed the lushness of a late Romantic size choir and orchestra. But the clarity and incisiveness of the parts quickly grew on me. I will rewatch it many times.
We just did the piece as a chorale 4 weeks back and that leads me to a better appreciation of what VOCES have done here. It is a deceptively simple-looking piece but pretty difficult to sing when you have a lesser number of voices. But this performance with just 8 voices blows me away. Wow
This is one of my favorite requiems. I had the privilege of singing it with a choir and full orchestra in New Jersey back in the mid 1970s. This is one of the more peaceful requiems composed and this scaled-down interpretation enhances that feeling of peace. Wonderfully done. Can't wait to see you again in NY this fall.
My first CD ever was a recording of the Faure' Requiem. I have always had a soft spot for this work. Hearing it done by you all is another joy to add. The arrangement is wonderful - brings out some really neat lines that we wouldn't normally hear. Thank you.
Could not be more grateful for this marvelous performance. I deem this Faure opus to be one of the most evenly inspired pieces of all time. Rare are the cases in which every movement attract us with the same intensity. But in this opus there seem to be no flaws at all - judging from the standpoint of attention alone. You have permitted the music to bring out the tragedy, the heroism and the bliss we associate to the happening of death in Christian traditions. As to that, this piece is a lyrical summa, I believe, and you, in my opinion, the ultimate performers. Thanks again.
Thank you so much everyone, that was absolutely and utterly incredible and beautiful too. I really really love ❤️ and enjoyed every second of this. Please stay safe and well too
I love this performance. I also find it visually very appealing to watch: somehow the sparseness and the physical distance between performers go perfectly with the ethereal quality of the music.
One of my favorite pieces, I’ve listened to it many many times. With this beautiful rendering I feel like I’ve never really heard it before. Thank you for the peace you offer.
My favorite recording so far of the Requiem is the Orchestre de Paris - with Paavo Jarvi. I came to this recording feeling certain it would lack something because of the small ensemble. It does not. I assure you it does not. This was an amazing, rich, and sensitive performance! Nicely done! Thank you!
The faster tempo in the beginning (am pausing at 4fifty8 to say this) allows a stunning sharpening of the harmonic (at least) structure. Unbelievable Pie Jesu 💎. Read in a comment it's a reduced orchestra here, didn't even realize maybe because I didn't compare with other versions or didn't hear any for years. Libera me sounded tremendous with your baritone's powerful diction. In Paradisum my ears & soul with VOCES8's voices indeed. Thank you all & each.
Bellísima obra, no la conocía. Sabía que existía, pero nunca me sentaba a escucharla.Escuche varias versiones, pero la de ustedes,así, " reducida", me parece la más excelente, la de mayor delicadeza.Me encantó.
I'm listening to this whilst working, but how am I supposed to be able to type accurately with tears running down my face? I've loved this Requiem for decades, and this is a magnificent performance of a brilliant piece of music. Bravo (and brava) to everyone involved with the creation and execution of this recording!
Wonderful! More long format pieces please, 30-90 minutes, I will watch them all, thank you. EDIT: Your Sound Engineers are excellent, the audio is fabulous.
I discovered this piece as an early teen and I fell in love with classical/choral music. It's quite dear to me. I love the more intimate chamber stetting. Still plenty of strength, but more personal and clearer than the big orchestras. The trebles are stellar in this as well. My favorite Pie Jesu so far - just angelic and effortless. Thanks to the entire ensemble. AMAZING JOB!!!
Yes we have the same favourite, Pie Jesu. But I discovered this when I was 72. So it is never too late. That is the funny and amazing side of this story. Now I am 77. Best wishes from Sweden!
I was working in Nantes and wondering around this beautiful town and heard some exquisite choral music coming from a small church....once I entered the creaky main door. I walked into a rehearsal of Fauré's exquisite Requiem and the Sanctus. It moved me to tears. I spoke with the MD whose English was infinitely superior to my pathetic French! He asked me what I thought as I was still wiping my eyes! "Magnifique🙏" It was a light bulb moment for me. When I returned to the UK, I joined the Banbury Choral Society and we've performed many great choral works including Fauré Requiem! As it happens, we're performing the Fauré & John Rutter Requiems at St Mary's Church Horsefair Banbury UK on Saturday 13th July at 7:30pm
Beautifully sung and played. I like this very intimate performance. As others mentioned, the Pie Jesu here is breathtaking. Both the intonation and the diction are impeccable.
Thanks Voces8 fir releasing this video of LFL-it was a highlight of the pandemic for me. To be able to see and hear you while in lockdown was a lifeline:)
Of all the Requiems by Faure I have heard, this is the one that has taken my heart. It has the splendour, but also the intimacy that is needed. I would lie if I said I am an expert on Faure. No, quite the opposite, it was not so long ago since I heard this Requiem for the first time. And so I am lucky to be able to share my thoughts about this music with you.
Oh my, once again, Voces8 and the ECO are at their glorious best. Like the Messiah, sadly, IMO, Faure's Requiem is usually sung by too many singers! How wonderful to hear and feel all its nuance and subtlety in this superb arrangement with an English translation, too. Wow. I was in bits, all over the place...you see, we sang the Faure Requiem in its liturgical setting for my Mum more than 30 years ago; there were only a dozen of us, with organ and harp..we weren't bad, but of course, nowhere near your league...you brought it all back...thank you. Special thanks to Andrea and Jonathon, and Barnaby, too, as to me, you are the ultimate musician.
This one's a "keeper." So well done. voces8 somehow has the ability to sound like a much larger ensemble. Faure has been a favorite of mine, among several others. I had not heard his Requiem before this, so this is wonderful. It is a little odd to see the 2-meter "separation" that seems strange today, or should. Nevermind that, your work just knocks me out.
I was at a Summer Vocal Camp, at Western Kentucky University, around 1977... We did the Fauré, and I was humbly honored to do the Libera Me, and this brought me back for a moment to teen me. Thank you.
Such a performance, the best of the English choral tradition pinpointing with minimal forces Faure's masterpiece. Deeply moving, this is one performance I'll turn to many times. In 1968, I sang this in my high school chorus, and then we were called upon to euologize Martin Luther King, Jr, so this music always has a deeper meaning for me. Thank you, VOCES8 and Maestro Smith.
Just wow... sublime performance. I might have seen Voces8 round about 10 years ago in Cologne Cathedral for the first time - I did never regret to go to that concert. Having sung this requiem a dozen times, most stunning from this performance is in my view the Pie Jesu. It seems so easy - and from the sheet music it is - but singing it flawless like Andrea does without any vibrato and perfectly on pitch ... man. Listen to 17:07 and 17:17 e.g., organ and voice are melting and one is not able to differentiate between the "instruments". Gorgeous!
Of course a little naive opinion, as I am relatively new as a lover of this music. Not many years ago I had never heard Faurés requiem. So nowadays I also like for example Offertorium, Agnus Dei and Libera me. But still the most Pie Jesu.
That "Pie Jesu" was out of this world: simply magnificent!
Extraordinary 🎶
Absolute favorite on this playlist! ❤
I think that's the whole point (being transcendent) ;)
I was lucky enough to hear Eleonore Cockerham preform this in the Requiem I was singing in a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely stunning.
The soprano in Pie Jesu is perfect! I love the pureness and clarity of her voice. And hardly any vibrato -- just right for this piece.
In Paradisum by Fauré is one of my all time favorite pieces of music ever.
when I first heard it I had to re-listen multiple times to believe what I was hearing
It was lovely, though I missed the more prominent organ triplets.
For me as well❤

Oh wow, I love this Requiem, and the snippets you've released in the past. So happy to see the whole piece here!!
Perhaps is this the first time VOCES8 sings a whole work, not only parts of music, or snippets, as you call them? Can you answer me on that, Alpaca?
No, I was wrong about this, listening more on RUclips. Sorry!
@@staffanolofsson8201 sorry, I missed your question, which I didn't know the answer to in either case, but it seems you've solved the mystery for both of us! Cheers
@@alpacamybag9103 Cheers! And have a good time with VOCES8!
May i just say that that was probably the best performance of Faure's Requiem that I have heard EVER! I know this work well, but - in the vernaclaur - you blew it out of the park. I cannot find polite words to express how awesome that was. thank you so much, all of you.
This is my new favorite recording. How love how pure and well blended the voices can get with the smaller ensemble
Très touché par cette interprétation. Merci VOCES 8!
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this performance. Beautiful.
Wonderful comment, Jorge! I could not be more grateful.
Thank you so much everyone, that was absolutely and utterly incredible and beautiful too. I really really love ❤️ and enjoyed every second of this. Please stay safe and well too
Brings back so many memories of concerts past. Makes me wish I was a young professional singer again., not 84
There are no words to adequately describe this. Thank you.
As you say, No comment.
I love this performance. I also find it visually very appealing to watch: somehow the sparseness and the physical distance between performers go perfectly with the ethereal quality of the music.
Yes you are right, I had the same thoughts...
she sings pie jesu without breaking a sweat... just beautiful 💯
Cette version intimiste du requiem de Fauré est magnifique, l'offertoire et le libera me sont des merveilles, merci ...
Thank you!
Magnifique en tous points. Merci pour ce moment de pur bonheur.
Beautiful performance of Faure's Requiem!
Andrea is a stunningly talented soprano. The new Emma Kirkby.
@@DarrenBush Yes I love Andreas voice. Straight, without vibrato, still with all the feeling....
@@DarrenBush PS I am lucky to have heard Emma Kirkby live once, at at Barock Festival in Sweden.
Absolutely sublime! Such a beautiful performance of a piece of music I've loved for over 40 years.
Vielen Dank für dieses kostbare Geschenk an die Welt. Ich bin zu Tränen gerührt über die Schönheit der Musik. Bravo!
God bless you for sharing you beautiful voces!!@
Stuning. I have asked for Pie Jesu to be performed at me funeral hopefully many years from now. ❤
My favorite choral work performed gorgeously by my favorite group. Absolute perfection. Thank you!
The Amen starting at 12:22 is the most exquisite and beautiful few seconds of music ever written. This rendition was simply stunning.
Beautifully sung and played. I like this very intimate performance. As others mentioned, the Pie Jesu here is breathtaking. Both the intonation and the diction are impeccable.
A huge thank you to Taylor Scott Davis for this intimate orchestration that made this performance possible.
And a huge thank to you for lifting this orchestration, John!
As I have heard your organ playing, John, I believe you have got Bach´s attention!
Thanks Voces8 fir releasing this video of LFL-it was a highlight of the pandemic for me. To be able to see and hear you while in lockdown was a lifeline:)
The Hosanna is just perfect, so powerful in the male voices and full of hope! ❤
Probably the best performance of Faure's Requiem I've heard. This is now officially on my playlist of favorites.
When you've got superlative voices of stellar quality whom are all are experienced in working in unison harmonics, it's sublime.
Thank you for this gift, then and now! Beautiful music and artistry.
An absolutely sublime musical experience. Thank you to all involved.
Brilliant.... I love this, one of the best recordings I've heard in a long time.
Everything about this is PERFECTION!❤
la plus belle version que je ne connaisse, merci voce8
The clarity of these voices is astounding!
What a lovely thing to say. You have the spiritual heart of a poet. D
Thank you.
This is just lovely. Thank you, VOCES8.
Gorgeous!
One of the most beautiful renditions of this piece I've ever heard. Absolutely stunning. A great arrangement.
This is a lovely intimate version of this gorgeous Requiem: a great companion to your recording of the Durufle Requiem. Thank you.
This is glorious. Thanks Voces8❤
Pie Jesu at 16:52 is my favourite, but all in this interpretation is wonderful🙏
Of course a little naive opinion, as I am relatively new as a lover of this music. Not many years ago I had never heard Faurés requiem. So nowadays I also like for example Offertorium, Agnus Dei and Libera me. But still the most Pie Jesu.
The soprano takes my breath away. I am a big fan of her anyway, but here she is absolutely outstanding.
